Künstler Brewing

About the Company

rating: 4.8

We are Vera and Brent Deckard, Künstler Brewing's owners and brewers. German for "artist," Künstler takes one part Bavarian Tradition, one part Texas Pride, and brews it all down in the multicultural barrel that is San Antonio. Then we serve it up in the heart of San Antonio's flourishing Southtown Arts District. Like so many home brewers, we started brewing in the kitchen, and now we’re opening our kitchen doors to you. Our beers balance a love of local ingredients and inventive recipes with a mix of traditional craft and technical know-how. We hope you’ll agree the end result is, well, rather a work of art. Our full kitchen has put us into the Restaurant realm and we are proud to share our love of food with you as well.

Künstler Brewing is SO good, Im obsessed with this spot. I visited this weekend for the first time - I came to watch the first half of the Texas Longhorns vs. UTSA with my partner and we had the best time!! We had their Pretzel from Slow Dough and Goat Cheese Croquettes (I paired everything with a Diet Coke while my boyfriend had an IPA). :-) We sat at the bar and the bartender took amazing care of us. The space is warm + inviting, and Im so looking forward to returning here in the future!!

Authentic and done right. Love this bier hall, the food was amazing and the servers were all kind and attentive. What a breath of fresh air this hole in the wall German restaurant is! The garden has a great set up, the playground is fun and well kept, and the patio is welcome to dogs! Only wish they didn t play explicit/REALLY NON FAMILY Friendly Music and if they must, maybe wait to play explicit content after a certain hour, like 8pm. (Goosebumps by Travis Scott was heard during our visit. I m not gonna bring the family with that on.) I really appreciate the fantastic service from all the servers. Thank you!

I was bummed that I couldn t find any German places in San Antonio. To the pleasantest of surprises, I found this place. It. Is. EVERYTHING. The swordfish, the spaetzle, the Hefeweizen, the schnitzel, the sauerkraut. It was like I could not order anything that was bad. My only regret was not having more room in my stomach. The parking is tight. They only have about 10 spots, an additional 7 spots are street parking. Once those are full, SOL . Their service is laid back style. Come in, grab a seat, get a menu from the bar then come back up to the bar to order. The relaxed service style was reflected in the tip amounts. They only ask for 3%, 5% and 7% on the bill. This is in addition to a mandatory 3% added to the bill.

Long time frequent visitor and native German. I do not appreciate the direction this place is going. I am sad because I really loved this place. Food is no longer authentic. Lacks flavor and the creative changes are not appreciated by me. As others have noted bread is served stale. The prices have increased so much that I think they are no longer appropriate for a place like this. The ambiance is suffering too. The kitchen exhaust is not sufficient and the entire place is foggy from cooking exhaust. The kitchen noise is very loud. They also are cutting on service now. One has to do their own ordering. All this might not matter to others but Ill sadly will take this place of my list off places.

. This place wins in my book based off of aura alone. Coming in at night, it has a very homey vibe a type of coziness that is found and books and movies. I m not a huge beer drinker so I can t speak to the fine complexities of flavor profiles they had here however I can say from the moment I parked and sat down up until the time where the bartender asked for my choices on my flight of beers, I felt like I was in good hands. It didn t hurt that the beers were also really good. Definitely worth a check out if you are in the city.

Crazy small portions. We love going to Kunstler, staff are great, beers are awesome most the time (a few times they had switched all the normal IPAs off and I had to have a lager .dont mind them trying though. One problem is the food portions. I had a shrimp roll which was $19 and came with four shrimp (small) and no more than 15 fries! I mean how much to fries cost! In a brewery you need to soak up a little beer!

This was our second time here and we chose to sit outside. The atmosphere was good except for the flies. Don t order anything with Parmesan outside because the flies will be on you! Note that if you sit outside there is a large water tank/jug for you bro get your own water, which I don t mind. The problem was when I asked the waitress for ice, that apparently was asking for too much. All three of us noticed the eye roll I received. The food was good, curry fried chicken and the pork chop. Out of 2 flights of beers we liked 3 of them.

Lets start with the great: the food was definitely awesome, definitely much better than most pub or brewery food Ive ever had. Excellent work on that! The not so good: the beer I tried had a funky flavor from sitting in the lines too long. Didnt seem like the beer was kept fresh. Didnt dare to drink another beer. The so-so: took about 20 minutes for a server to come see us. The place wasnt terribly busy and it didnt seem like they were short staffed. This service experience really did not impress me. Overall a good place but with those major flaws. Definitely some room to improve. Vegetarian options: A nice selection of vegetarian options. Dietary restrictions: Not for people with restricted diets. Parking: Some spots up front. Kid-friendliness: Not kid friendly. Wheelchair accessibility: Wheelchair accessible but the front door is hard to open.

Great place with great beer! Also the best German food in town - the schnitzel and spätzle are amazing. I like that theres a biergarten with a playground to keep the kiddos busy outside. Vegetarian options: One of our children is vegetarian - there are enough options that my picky child can find things to eat, but they also have things for example like cauliflower schnitzel. Parking: Its easy to find parking, but note that theres limited Künstler Brewing dedicated parking, and you often must park on the street. Kid-friendliness: Theres a playground! And approachable enough food for most kids to be able to find something theyll eat.

What a fun evening here overall! Alas, there was definitely lost potential. Reasons this place is a winner? Readers will want to come for the ambiance, scrumptious German fare, and crafty drinks (pun intended). Sadly, in glaring contrast was the paltry service we received, as well as some higher than expected prices without the food quality to match. Not a big drinker when it comes to alcohol, but the sips sampled were good. The drink connoisseurs with me, though, did give me their approval and recommendations! They seem to have rotating drinks and specials on tap, as well as wine options. Food was well prepared and ranged from average to excellent. Minor complaints only as far as taste, but some pricing was a little on the expensive side, especially for a gastropub setting, meant to be casual dining. We had the Spaetzle Macaroni and Cheese, not as cheesy as it could be but the spaetzle was tasty. Relatively easy dish done competently! Shrimp Roll on a pretzel bun was fine. Maybe $10 fine, not $18. Pretzel roll was a tad dry, shrimps seemed likewise dry even though they were dipped in a mayonnaise sauce. It came with toasty fries that werent soggy and had a crisp texture, so that was nice. In contrast, the Schnitzel was impressive, glad the aptly named Künstler knows how to do German cuisine! Lightly breaded, the pork meat was succulent and tender, infused with the orange and their special sauce. Last but not least, The Big Haus from their specials board. Definitely big. But ultimately, really it was a huge pot of cabbage, potatoes, and sauerkraut, with some pork cheek pieces and the 3 large bratwurst. With a large bread roll on the side, nicely toasted. Readers want to know, was it good? The vegetables were roasted in some tasty seasoning and sauces, and the pork cheek pieces, although buried in there, were flavorful. Bottom line, yes, good. But not almost $40 good. Probably would have preferred getting the single bratwurst, on the regular menu, because those were the highlights. Ambiance. One of the few places I can say without much hesitation that outside dining is actually better than inside. The inside was pretty dark, relatively small with open kitchen and a small area displaying Künstler merchandise. Nice to see they try to be involved in the community. There were some brochures out for other local breweries, plus the citys Fiesta celebration medals. Outside includes the large patio as well as the beer garden complete with a playground to distract the children and a stage for live performances! This brings us to the largest disappointment. We walked in and out took almost five minutes before anyone even came to greet us, despite not being extremely busy on a weekday night. Patrons were mostly outside, where you can actually order online through their application. Eventually, we were told we could seat ourselves if we wanted to dine on the patio and that someone would come out shortly with menus. Ten minutes later, had to go in and get menus ourselves. Another five minutes later, someone came out to see whether we had been assisted. Waitress was friendly, took our orders. Drinks came out in a reasonable amount of time. For the food, we had to wait another twenty five minutes for some, almost forty for the rest. My description for the service provided here: cordial, but only the minimum required. Are we return patrons? Although it would be a pity to lose such a great hang out ambiance, as tasty and welcoming gastropub locales are not easy to find, one must consider their expectations. An exemplary dining experience with superior food and drinks, as well as ambiance and service, in a timely manner? Maybe not. A return visit would probably require expecting a mostly selfserve dining experience, perfectly fine for some. To each their own. Prost!

We dipped in because we craved some German or German-adjacent fare and didnt want to travel to NB for it. We had the spatzle mac & cheese, the beet salad, currywurst, brew burger, curry cauliflower, and fried leberkase sandwich. EVERYTHING that touched down on our table was absolutely delicious. Were not the drinking type, so this was food only and it was every bit worth it. WOW.

Attended an exceptionally organized Yelp event at Brewing and had the pleasure of sampling a variety of their menu items and beers, which were nothing short of spectacular. Danny, the General Manager, was the epitome of hospitality. His passion for Brewing was palpable, enriching our experience with fascinating backstories about the brewery, its inception, and the vision of its owner. The house salad, while simple, was incredibly delicious and a testament to the kitchens prowess in elevating straightforward dishes. A standout for me was the goat cheese croquettes - a unique offering that was both surprising and delightful. The tomato and carrot marmalade served as the perfect accompaniment, enhancing the flavors beautifully. However, it was the currywurst that stole the show. Perfectly seasoned, it left an indelible mark on my palate and was a testament to the culinary skill at Brewing. The beer sampling was an adventure in itself. Each beer was a revelation, showcasing meticulous crafting and a deep understanding of flavors. It s clear that a lot of thought and care goes into their brewing process. After the event concluded, we decided to stay longer to indulge in more of the menu. The duck lollipops caught our eye and did not disappoint an absolute must-try. The laid-back atmosphere of Brewing, coupled with the aim-to-please attitude of the staff, made our extended stay all the more enjoyable. In summary, my experience at Brewing was exceptional. Thanks to Dannys warmth and the culinary delights served, I left with a full heart and an eager anticipation to return. A must-visit for anyone who appreciates good food and great beer.

German beers are very authentic and the food is the real deal with an artisan twist. My husband and I have visited MANY microbreweries and this one stands out as head and shoulders above most of the others. We split an order of schnitzel plus a side of spaetzle, which was superb, and plenty for the two of us. Service was phenomenal and the atmosphere authentic but Nuevo. Kunstler Brewing had been on our list of places to visit for a while now, so finally after the holidays were over we took a visit with some friends and were so impressed with our experience! We went on a Tuesday evening, the brewery is located in the Southtown neighborhood. Parking for the actual brewery is a little limited, but you can also park in the surrounding side streets. The outside and inside has great space for large and small parties with plenty of seating, with a bonus room in the back that also has TVs! One of the first things I noticed was their food menu (we love a brewery with a good food menu!) so we started with their Slow Dough Pretzel, it was huge, tasted homemade and was served with brown mustard and a delicious beer cheese on the side. Great appetizer for sharing! I then ordered the Brew Burger with fries and I was so surprised by the flavor of this burger between the caramelized beer onions to the cheese and aioli, this burger was what dreams are made of! And the garlic aioli fries? Absolutely delicious!! I should not forget to mention they have an incredible beer list from their own brewery and even offer non-alcoholic beer options which is very inclusive! We may have found one of our favorite breweries in San Antonio - we will definitely be back!

Really great beers and food and the veg options were greatly appreciated. I will say, the only downside was that we hadnt had so much as a glass of water dropped off after sitting for 15 minutes. I ended up having to go to the bar to ask for a waiter. Things were smooth sailing after that, though! The only other thing I will mention is that I noticed an odd trend of the owner gaslighting negative reviews on here, like suggesting people (who clearly have photos of the restaurant in their review) visited a different restaurant. It was really off-putting and I hope they find someone more professional to handle their online presence.

It had a yummy chunky brown mustard and baked bier cheese along with pickled veggies. I ordered the goat cheese croquettes. I was blown away with how scrumptious the goat cheese was! I highly recommend this appetizer! For our entrees, my husband ordered the currywurst that comes with fries and a lovely aeoli sauce. I ordered the appetizer of Spaetzle Mac & cheese that honestly puts so many Mac & cheeses to shame for me. It brought me back to my childhood when my mother would make spaetzles. Nicely air conditioned tap room, but we had our dog with us so we sat in the game room where there was 3 TVs, a water bowl for Margo, and plenty of fans. Everyone was friendly and helpful, and the crowd a bit yuppie.

I have been a huge fan of this spot for years. Generous portions, diverse menu, and great beers. My experience on 8/9 was embarrassing. I brought my daughter and grandson from out of town along with the rest of my family. I chose Kunstler over Little Rhein Prost Haus. Big mistake. Jaeger Schnitzel used to be a huge portion with spaetzel so the ladies ordered one to split. The portions provided now are snack-sized by comparison. The burger my son ordered was burned to be damned. Pretzels are tiny now compared to what they used to be. I ordered Currywurst that was ONE sausage served in a bowl atop a mound of fries with the curry ketchup already applied. Definitely not worth the $15. The German Chocolate Cake we ordered was a sliver when it used to be a shareable portion. The menu used to have Leberkase, Banh Mi Brat, etc. Now there s a dedicated veggie burger and a dedicated vegan schnitzel. If someone wants to eat vegan, that s cool, but they re a minority of the population. If they want vegan, eat the salad or the pretzel. I hope this same cost-cutting focus doesn t continue or infect their new location in Hemisfair. Also, if Kunstler is automatically charging gratuity, they need to be UP FRONT with the practice. Sadly, I will not be back. If it weren t for the beers and service, this would be a zero star review.

I just stopped by for a quick lunch and flight of beers. The beers are excellent and the food was amazing. The menu was a bit limited compared to a lot of places but everything from the burger to spaetzle mac and cheese was delicious. I ll definitely come back again. There is an unshaded playground/slide outside for kids to play. Parking: The parking is down the street but super close to the brewery. Kid-friendliness: There is a small playground/slide outside.

It was a nice place with a German theme. Had a great back story we learned from the bartenders. The beer was ok but I could only really find one I liked. We sat at the bar which was right next to the kitchen which made it really hot where we sat. Outside there was little stands where they sold hand made items. They did they did this monthly. They did have a live band which was cool but didnt stay for that. We ate the cheese board which was really good for two to share.

Been coming to this place for a couple of years. my family loved it. It became a Regular spot. We were excited for the new addition to the outside area, as well as the new taphaus, however the last couple of times we re disappointing to say the least. So you used to be able to sit outside in the back and order from your table, now you have to walk inside to order at the bar, so it s inconvenient for the customer. the menu has changed. All the food we grew to love from before they took off the menu. Maybe going for a minimalist vibe?(no more specials either) We recently went and ordered the brew burger and a kraut dog. the frites (French fries) have completely changed (no seasoning) skinny like McDonald s. a plate we would ve normally devoured got wasted. the brew burger had great flavor but the meat was undercooked (pink, almost red in the middle). We were very surprised, and let down by the new menu and food quality for the big price. We still love the brew but decided as a family to not order the food again, sadly! we sat and reminisced about old Kuenstler as we waited for our server. :( in the photo was the old French frites perfectly seasoned, and the new ones we were recently served.

Hands down one of the best breweries in the greater San Antonio/ Austin area. Staff is friendly, and Vera is an incredible brewer. Usually if you go into a brewery of this scale and see selections ranging from traditional german to stout to IPA, it means that they tried to go too broad and it will all be bland and generic. Instead, Kunstler hits it out of the park. I am thoroughly impressed by the different varieties and the depth within each variety. Further, they can manage to take a kitchen smaller than your master bedroom closet and produce some of the best wurst sandwiches, Pastrami Reubens, and Po boys in San Antonio. In conclusion, if you enjoy excellent beer or good german fare, visit Kunstler.

If I had wanted Burger King or McDonalds french fries with my bratwurst, I would have gone to Burger King or McDonalds. There was NOTHING about Bavarian Tradition in those worthless french fries. How disappointed we were!! In my opinion, a BIG mistake by management/owners. In the past, we frequent Kunstlers 8-10 times a year, by ourselves and with friends. Driving 20+ miles from north central San Antonio WAS--in the past--worth the drive. Having spent 7 1/2 years in Germany in the military, I looked forward to the bratwurst, fries and beer. NO MORE. Even had to ask the staff to turn down the music, they said no problem, other customers have also said its too loud . Bad day at the office for Kunstler Brewing. Hope they change their act. I admit, its tough to find a good bratwurst in San Antonio. However, over priced craft beer is a dime a dozen and Burger King or McDonalds french fries are on every street corner. So long Kunstler, your change has saved me a long drive!! 7/4/2023. Parking: Not a problem for us.

Not many breweries can do so many different types of beers so well. Kunstler has some of the best German style beers, smoothest IPAs, tastiest lighter beers, and most interesting dark beers in San Antonio. This place is a must for both beer geeks and foodies as their food menu is almost as great as their beer.

The Smoked Wolfie had great drink-ability and delicious flavor. I also LOVED the Puro Southtown, I would KILL for this to be the base of a Michelada. Great off the beaten track brewery in San Antonio. I came in around 8 or so on a weekday as I recovered from the heat and a killer hangover all day. Needed to get out of my Airbnb down the road and stumbled upon this spot down what looked like a residential street. Couple bartenders gave quick and attentive service. The music was all great classic rock hits. Kitchen hadnt closed to I grabbed a pretty delicious bratwurst especially for the price. I wasnt in the talking mood but the bartenders were friendly to the other folks at the bar. Overall a great hidden gem!
