Dinner with family visiting from out of town. There was a bit of a wait, so we were offered a high table in the apparent bar section. Not a problem. Well take it. The high seats are not comfortable, but this didnt bother me. Our server was nice but overwhelmed. It seemed they were seating a LOT of people in the bar and close to the same time. Our service suffered a bit for it. Not close to enough to deter me from returning. Fried Green Tomatoes. DELICIOUS!!! Tastes scratch-made with a light layer of breading and fried. You can just barely taste/feel the cayenne (which I LOVE). Served with a remoulade sauce thats pretty good too, if you like mayo-based sauces. I do not like mayo, so I skip this and anything with mayo. These are a favorite of mine and I get them every single time we have Whiskey Cake. Flash Fried Brussel Sprouts. Wow, these were impressive!! The balsamic glaze was just perfect. There is a sauce that has mayo in it that I will request on the side next time. The sprouts are cooked just perfectly. Yum!!! Chicken Meatballs with peppers and hummus. Great! Again, taste hand-made. So fresh and delicious. Great combo of traditional mediterranean flavors. The hummus is smeared in the bowl, then the chicken meatballs, then the other sauce(s) drizzled on top of that. Im a separate food kinda girl, so this was tough for me. But again, the flavors? Amazing. The service was kinda rough, but I give a pass because of the mass seating she had to endure. Ive had the actual Whiskey Cake. Many times. It nearly a religious experience. Try a tiny taste of all the elements by themselves. The cake. The whiskey sauce. The creme anglaise (like ice cream sauce). Then, take a taste with all the parts together. ... See? SOOOOOO good. Dont want to keep using the same words, but its amazing. Eat here as often as possible. Might be the best mid-price-range restaurant in town. Thank you Whiskey Cake!

This place is very Celiac friendly and delicious. Walter, our server, was knowledgeable and accommodating. He even brought the chef out to confirm my meal was gluten free as ordered. The food was DELICIOUS and there were a lot of gluten free accommodations. We ordered a gluten free dessert and the manager came to the table to explain that the person making the dessert had made a mistake and accidentally used regular flour so it wasn t safe to eat. They take allergies seriously here and I am so pleased with the high quality and attention to detail.

Whiskey tonight was a big fail for my husband and I. I usually get salmon. Tonight was looking like a burger night for me. So, I ordered the brisket burger well done. It looked so good nice and warm. I cut it in half big fail raw. Had it made again. Waited while my husband tried to eat but couldnt without me. Second burger came out..... its didnt look as good as the first one, and the bun and sauce were cold to the touch. And still not well done. Some what raw. A big disappointed. Paid for my drinks and appetizer. And left hungry.. Chick-fil-A was dinner for us.

Where to start!! Our service was not the best to not taking drink orders to only asking 1/2 the table if they needed things then leaving when I said yes and never got to even order the drink. My appetizers were ok (candied bacon/crab fritters) Now to the entree. I asked for medium well steak and fries. Everything was cold and my steak was welll over cooked!!! We had to leave because we had reservations if I had the time I definitely would have asked for my money back. Kind of disappointed we asked for them to put it in Togo boxes and this was what I got!!!

Just go...if you are in the neighborhood or across town, just go. Candied bacon, pulled pork sliders and some of the best brussel sprouts Ive ever had hands down. And that was just the appetizers. The bone-in pork chop was something else, and fantastic! I didnt even know succotash could be that good. The server was attentive, helped us navigate the menu and was pretty knowledgeable. The atmosphere was mellow and made for a great relaxing time. Oh, and dont skimp on desert! Try the name sake whiskey cake. There are cakes and then there are experiences. Enjoy!

I d like to preface this review with the fact that I used to work there. It was only for a few months as I saw an abusive trend in management, but the old general manager was always very kind. I suppose in the past year they got a new general manager because I had an absolutely disgraceful experience with him a few months ago. I tried to just let it go, but I d never received such demeaning and condescending customer service. He might not work there anymore and if that s the case, please disregard or contact me and I ll take this down because their food, atmosphere, and general service have always been sufficient. What happened, was I google searched whiskey cake la cantera and immediately what pops up is reserve a table or place an order. I chose place an order and placed my order, as one does. Keep in mind the order was about $80. I get to the restraunt and say my name for the order, the host says they don t have it and gets another host. She also tells me for whatever reason it s not showing up and she ll get the kitchen manager. The kitchen manager comes out, he s very nice and tells me he s sorry for the delay as I ve already been standing there for about 20 minutes. I show him my receipt, that it s the right address, that it says they sent the order to the restraunt, and he tells me they ll have it right out on the fly. I say thank you and continue to wait. Then the new general manager comes up to asking for more information. I go over it all again with him and he says he s very sorry for everything and the food will be out soon and if I can txt him the order so he can right it. I txt him the screenshot with the total and the correct location, everything i already told him and at this point I started to get a different tone from him. About 15 minutes later he came out with the food and tells me the only way I can have it is if I pay for it. I m shocked because obviously I already paid for it and just waited an hour for the food. When I tell him this he says he understand that but we need to get paid and that s just how you run a business . The switch up was so condescending and unprofessional, maybe because I have a particular inside view as to how those situations were handled when I worked there, we would have given people their food for free just for making them wait an hour! As someone that s seen both ends, the manager Carlos is incredibly rude, condescending, and doesn t know how to treat customers. He says it s not their fault and they don t have to take accountability because it was technically a third party . If the manager is there I d absolutely recommend staying away, he is not at all for the customer. Even when it s clear the customer didn t do anything wrong besides use the third party that the restaurant itself chooses to use! Maybe he s kinder to others and I just was an easy target as a young girl. Either way, do better.

The food was phenomenal. We had the grilled Brussel Sprouts as an appetizer. They were really good. I could make a meal out of just them. The burgers were really excellent. Of course, the whiskey cake dessert was really good. The background noise level was a little higher than I usually prefer but not obnoxious or unexpected for such a place. The waiter was VERY helpful as we hadnt been there before. I cant wait to go again. We arrived on a Thursday at about 6 pm and had no wait for a table.

Farmers breakfast - great sampler, however the food came out cold and the bacon had a jerky texture. The biscuits are spongy, tasty, just have some water available. The cinnamon roll was enough to feed 5 and was not too sweet, so definitely recommend! Ruby slippers juice was refreshing - not pictured. The atmosphere is loud but there is decent space between tables. Just hard to hear yourself talk. Plenty of parking out front.

I love this place. The atmosphere, food, and service doesn t fail. I have been here many times and every time is a good experience. I love their deviled eggs, and I had their chickenbirdger. Myself and five other gentlemen had a reservation for 7 oclock this evening. We finally were seated at our table at 7:45. However, this had nothing to do with the staff. From the hostesses to the manager, everyone on the crew made us feel as comfortable as they could while we waited for a lingering table of guests to finally understand it was time to wrap up the party and make room for other patrons. While we waited for our table, our server Iris graciously got us started with drinks from the bar. For the rest of our evening she took great care to ensure we enjoyed our night at Whiskey Cake. The food was great and the atmosphere was classy. But in my opinion, Iris is who made the evening perfect. It was a great night out despite the delay in being seated due to other patrons overstaying their welcome.

Everything was delicious and our waiter was amazing. My only disappointment was the duck entree had been removed from the menu. Its understandable and I shouldnt have assumed it would be there from a picture someone posted in their review of 9 months ago, but it would have been nice to try it. The establishment was clean, decently quiet despite being a full house, and the food and drinks came out right away. This is a place I highly recommend.

Fortunately the server for a very large group of people (approx. 12) brought our food and refilled our drinks. We were a party of 2. Good size restaurant no waiting for table. But as an after thought we did make a reservation while we were en route. Restaurant was very loud.

Really wanted salmon, but I do not like tomatoes and do not eat bread. The salmon comes only with tomatoes, cucumber and chibatta bread. I asked if I could sub all that for a scoop of mashed potatoes and the waiter said, we don t no, they don t have mashed potatoes. However, on the menu listed under shepherds pie is mashed potato. We left without ordering.

AWESOME! Hubby ordered the Bone-in Pork Chop--tender and so delicious with the side of Succotash. OMG! It was so uniquely flavored with the grilled corn and edamame! A new favorite! YUM! I went in for a quick bite on a Saturday afternoon. I was greeted promptly and found room at the bar. The staff at the bar were attentive and friendly. They provided outstanding service. I ordered their duck wings and paired it with a Still Whiskey *burbon* from Austin, TX. It was absolutely delicious. I watched the bar server make other fun drinks while I was there. Needless to say, I had a pleasant experience here! Ill definitely come back again. Come check them out for yourself!

Good food Service and Atmosphere. We loved the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer along with the deviled eggs. The deviled eggs have a cherry tomato and thick bacon bit on top. We got the Shepherds pie and the Chicken Salad. Our server was amazing and attentive. I would definitely recommend this place. Always seems to be seating when we go!

Great place to have lunch at la cantera. Good prices and portions. The waiter was so nice to us! The tavern burger was super tasty! I had a chicken sandwich with pesto but I didn t like the texture of the shredded chicken it was a bit hard although the taste was good. The fried green tomatoes were very good too!

Friendly staff, great vibes and food! The chicken was well cooked. Not overdone at all, chicken was very moist inside and crispy on the outside. The tri tip dip was also good with the au jus, only wish would be the fries to be crispier. Flash fried Brussel sprouts were a winner as well. The whiskey cake is definitely a large serving that can feed 2-3 people. Super delicious, need to get if you visit.

Tried the pasta and their whiskey cake. The food was average. The drink was pretty good. The whiskey cake portion is huge. 2-4 people can share one easily! Overall a great experience, however there were a couple issues. It was way too warm inside. Also I ordered juice, it was 90% ice. Honestly, that may be too generous. When I asked for another with light ice I was informed it wouldnt change the amount of juice. Tasty, but not worth the price.

My wife had ordered a whiskey cake for a to go order 30 minutes before getting there. We showed up and she went inside and said she was there to pick up an order for a whiskey cake to go. She waited 20 minutes before I called and asked what the hold up was. When she asked the lady the status of the cake, she was ignored. She spoke to the manager and said we placed an order for a slice of cake over an hour ago and to just cancel the order. The manager offered for a free cake the next time, but there won t be a next time. I m not entirely sure why a slice of cake takes over an hour to get ready on a Thursday. Now, I have to monitor my credit card to make sure the order is truly going to be cancelled and she was provided no receipt. Nothing but the verbal word of a manager. We ve eaten here before, and the food is decent, but overpriced for the food you get. You really ever just go there for the cake, but looks like they re gonna need a days notice to get it ready for you.

I absolutely love this place! One of my favorites! We went in for dinner on June 3rd. Joseph was a great server, so definitely ask for him when you go. He was knowledgeable about the menu, gave recommendations, nice, friendly, and overall made our experience memorable. Our favorite apps our the deviled eggs and candied bacon. A new drink called down by the bay was so good! Very refreshing! My all time favorite dish that night was the smoked chopped chicken salad. Every ingredient was perfect and flavorful! The dressings on it definitely made it even more delicious! I will be going back more often just to have those 4 things. Please Don t ever take those things away! Thank you! Dietary restrictions: They have numerous options for gluten free which I have to do.

I tried the ROTISSERIE FARM BIRD. The chicken was impressively soft and juicy, but I found it somewhat lacking in flavor. On the other hand, the vegetables were cooked to perfection and tasted amazing, offering a delightful contrast. Went here this evening for my birthday and I ordered a Bohemian Raspberry beverage and the ribeye .. the beverage I was given had a bug floating in it, upon further investigation I discovered the mint branch in my drink was filthy and had dead bugs and a whole spiderweb nest on it. Apparently they wash them before they serve it to guest but clearly mine wasn t. The manager brought out a fresh one for me. I ordered a medium well ribeye and it was very disappointing. Totally unevenly cooked and tasted like a lump of coal. I left hungry, Irritated and very unsatisfied on my birthday. The service was good and manager was helpful. But I have no plans on returning.

It can get really hot and humid in this place! Made it very uncomfortable that even the beer that was served was warm and unenjoyable. We couldnt stick around long enough to order actual food. Subject: Appalling Dining Experience at Whiskey Cake Our recent visit to Whiskey Cake was nothing short of appalling. We arrived slightly early for our reservation and were advised to sit at the bar and order a drink while we waited. Despite ordering simple drinks, it took over 20 minutes without any service, forcing us to cancel our order entirely. This level of incompetence was just the beginning. Once we were finally seated, the service went from bad to worse. Our waitress, who couldn t even open a bottle of wine properly, left cork grinds in our wine and didn t bother to apologize. After receiving our waters and initial round of drinks, we never saw her again. This neglect is inexcusable. The litany of failures continued with our appetizers. The charcuterie board arrived with no explanation of its contents, and our fried green tomatoes were completely forgotten. Adding insult to injury, the waitress didn t inform us that the kitchen would be closing. After an hour of waiting and preparing to order, we were abruptly told that the kitchen was closed. This lack of basic communication and professionalism is utterly unacceptable. When we raised our concerns, the manager responded with a condescending attitude, showing no interest in resolving the issues. His dismissive behavior suggested he just wanted us out of the restaurant, rather than addressing our legitimate grievances. For anyone considering dining in the greater San Antonio area, I strongly advise avoiding Whiskey Cake at all costs. The combination of subpar food and abysmal customer service creates a disastrous experience. Spend a little more at Perry s, Toro, or the new Tommy Bahama kitchen for vastly superior service and food. Having lived in La Cantera for over five years, I have seen numerous management and staff changes at Whiskey Cake, but this recent visit was by far the worst.
