Rick's On the Square

About the Company

rating: 4.3

At Rick’s, we understand that any time you walk through a new door, you want to feel like you belong. Unfortunately, casual fine dining venues often feel intimidating, uncomfortable, and lonely. And that’s not right. Mealtimes should be about making people feel welcome. Even when eating out, you should always be able to feel right at home. That's why the heart and soul of Rick's is being whoever you need us to be, day or night, outside or inside, weekday or weekend, family time or play time. No judgment allowed – only excellent lunch and dinner made from scratch, by people who care about you (not your status), and an eclectic atmosphere ready for any mood. It’s how we’ve been doing things in downtown Tyler since 1992. So, come have a meal

We had a great time eating here with my sister and BIL last Friday. They were visiting from Austin. The place was practically empty in the late afternoon. The food was great. Loved the Wedge salad, and the fresh Oysters on the half shell were some of the best Ive had. They were served deliciously cold. We had hot wings, also crispy and delicious.. And someone ordered the Catfish plate. We shared it all and really enjoyed it. We also enjoyed our drinks. My only complaint I had was with the young woman who was supposed to greet us when we walked into the place. It was dark compared to the sunny outside, so our eyes were adjusting and we did not know where to go or what our choices were for seating. The woman, (Friday, March 4, 2022) was sullen, rude and almost mocking us when we asked to show us what our choices were for seating. She must have been looking at her phone. She did not greet us at all. She didnt even look up as we came in. She was obviously totally enthralled with herself and her phone or whatever she was doing, and we were a thorn in her side disturbing her solitude. We brushed it off and found our way onto an open patio where we enjoyed our time and the food. Our wait person, a wonderful young woman expecting a baby very soon, was excellent! She seemed to be the only one working aside from the kitchen staff and the bar tender. After we finished our great meal we all headed out. Again we walked past the supposed greeter. Again she was preoccupied with her phone or whatever, and did not even have the time or care to talk to us. My sister said goodby, and she mumbled something not even bothering to acknowledge us. Perhaps it is my age. Perhaps it is my biased, but I am used to spending money at places that are appreciative of my business. I will return, but not because of this young woman. And I would hope that whoever owns this place might want to train their staff in the social graces of customer connection and service. A greeter is supposed to be just that, but this one did not get the memo of her job description. We left feeling sorry that we had bothered her Unfortunately, it kinda of soured our arrival and exiting.

First of all let me say I used to really enjoy Ricks. However, my most recent visit was just not very good. Our waitress was great but thats where the compliments end. The food was sub par at best. I make better deviled eggs. Except for the Ranch, the sauces were strange. My husband got catfish but his tartar sauce was more like honey mustard. We asked the waitress if she accidentally brought honey mustard and she said no, I think thats how they make it. Which is not ok. The Thousand Island I had with my Reuben was more like Canes sauce, but witouth the flavor. It was a Friday night at 7:30 and shouldve been busy, especially with the cover charge to watch the band at 10. I think thats partly why its so dead on a Friday. People dont want to pay extra to sit on a great patio for dinner if they arent staying for the band. There has to be a better way to navigate that. This is my experience and these are my opinions. Take it for what its worth. Thanks.

I don t normally like to be negative but with a $133 bill I would have expected A LOT better food! Texas burger had zero seasoning and flavor and the homemade chips also had zero seasoning and were room temp so no added seasoning would stick! Grilled shrimp taco also no seasoning and the only flavor was the sauce! Better tacos at Taco Bell! The filet mignon was ok but not worth the price! Best thing we ordered was the Rick s Wings tossed with bbq sauce. Disappointed for an anniversary dinner! Our waitress was Chloe and she was awesome!!! That is all!!

Weve been coming to Ricks for almost 4 years, and it is one of the best spots in town. I will say that we try to avoid going during the busy times. For food: We recommend the filet oscar, gumbo, ahi seared tuna, and grilled Texas bites. For drinks: bluebonnet, indian paintbrush, and pimms cup if you like specialty cocktails, or they can make you whatever you want.

Wifes pork chop bland no seasoning. 1st glass water had ice rest was all tap water no ice no cold water. Put some lights in the place, if i wanted to eat in the dark would go to a bat cave. The kitchen messed up my food (a taco) so I sent it back to be remade. By the time it came out, my side (which I paid extra for) was cold, and my date was finished eating. We also asked for salt and pepper but also seasoning for his salmon because it tasted as if nothing was on it. When our bill came, over $70, I asked if anything could be done about my food being wrong, then very late (not even mentioning the bland food). The manager came over and immediately was confrontational asking what do I want done about it. I said whatever he thinks is right. He said they fixed my taco so everything should be good. (I never said I want my meal free or even discounted, I simply asked if he could do anything to make it right. I even said I didn t know how much my food even cost.) He was insistent he fixed the taco and we should be good not seeming to care about how long it took to get my food correctly. He eventually said he d take the cost of my taco ($7.00) off our bill after repeatedly saying he fixed the taco. We are very disappointed. This is definitely not the treatment I would expected from such a wonderful establishment like Rick s on the Square. I noticed the manager walking around and going outside the front door at least twice while we were there. When an order is messed, I would think the manager would want to, if at all possible, apologize and ensure the customer they are fixing it and getting it out correctly asap and appear to give a crap about how we are feeling about the situation. This manager absolutely did not give a crap about us. Incredibly disappointing.

We finished things off with a slice of key lime pie that was just the right balance of tart lime and sweet graham cracker crust.

We are from out of town so really had no idea where to go, my son chose this place since it was his birthday. We were not impressed when we first walked in it felt dank and greasy and there were literally maybe 2 other tables at 7:00 on a Thursday. I got the feeling it was not kid friendly but we had our 3 year old and decided to roll with it. The hostess, like others have said, was on her phone a lot. Nobody came to our table for a while; once our waitress got there she was nice and gave recommendations which I always appreciate. I was surprised by the food as I was not expecting it to be good. Pita bread and hummus appetizer: hummus was pretty good and had good flavor, pita was like cardboard. I got the bacon and blue cheese burger and honestly it was one of the best burgers I have ever had; cooked perfectly, they have a homemade ranch dressing that is DELISH and went so well with my burger. Penne pasta was good, macaroni and cheese was good. Chicken fried chicken was pretty good. House made chips were good. It was pretty expensive and like others I dont like being up charged because I use a debit card. It was over 200$ and we dont drink alcohol. We had 4 adults, 2 teenagers, 11 year old, and 3 year old. The waitress was sure to let me know their restaurant was geared more towards adults so we probably will not be going back because we always have children but I would not mind having that burger to-go again!

I came here for a going away party on 1/19/24 and this is the worst experience at any restaurant I ve ever had in Tyler. Food - I ordered the Hawaiian cheeseburger and chips and the burger, as well as the chips were both burnt. Several of my coworkers also had issues with the quality and lack of flavor of the food. Service - we had a decent size group so I was cutting the waitress a little bit of slack. HOWEVER, I sat at the table for 3 hours and didn t get a single refill on my water, and the waitress spilled someone s water on our table, gave us a rag and never gave us new napkins or silverware. Bill - Unfortunately the 20% tip was included in the bill due to party size, or else I wouldn t have tipped. When I paid my 20.73 bill, I paid with 21$ in cash and never saw any of my change. The waitress KEPT the 27 cents, which isn t much, but for terrible service and food, I was going to keep my change. I will NEVER be back to this establishment and I m sure several of my coworkers share the same sentiment.

We gave them one more shot this year... Same complaints overall. Going to have to change our family tradition. We were very disappointed in our visit. We were seated quickly, but no servers came to our table for quite some time. A waitress finally came to our table and began to take our drink order. A waiter then approached and, in a very rude manner, told the waitress that we were his table and quickly took charge. (It was a very rude and embarrassing altercation.) We ordered three appetizers, but the waiter made no effort to take our dinner orders until I asked him to, alerting him to the fact that we had somewhere we needed to be at a certain time. The oysters were no bigger than the size of quarters and the calamari was chewy. Our entrees were enjoyable but the squash was overcooked and mushy. Our final bill came to well over $200 for the four of us. We have no intention of returning.

100% worth it! First time going was lastnight and it was amazing. It is a restaurant one side and then it closes down after a certain time and is spilt with a bar and also an outdoor patio/ courtyard area where there is a stage with live bands play.Drinks are a decent price aswell. Love the the cosy feeling of being able to dance and drink outside then chill and hang inside the bar area where they do have couches to relax and vibe on. 10 dollars entry fee after a certain time in the night. We went after 11.So I am assuming the same time when dinner is served then that is when it is free and then once dinner is closing they charge at the door. We were served by the best server there, HAYLIE!!! She is such a beautiful young lady who knows her stuff. She is an amazing asset to this business and was going above and beyond for us and always checking up on me and my sister when we were there. She definitely made the night 10 x better. We walked in at 5 on a Saturday and nobody was there. We had to say hi to the hostess to get her to acknowledge us. Our server (Camryn) was amazing though! Very attentive and friendly. We got the calamari as our appetizer and it was delicious. They don t have a kids menu here, but they were very accommodating and cut a cheeseburger in half for my kids to share. My husband got the Oscar filet and loved it, but said it had a little too much pepper. Kids liked their cheeseburger but thought the fries had way too much pepper. I got the shaved ribeye with onion rings and I swear there wasn t a single seasoning on anything on my plate, which was kinda disappointing because with a little salt it would have been amazing. Onion rings had great breading, but no seasoning either. This place has so much potential. The cooks just gotta figure out the seasoning part and I think you d get more customers. We will be back to give it another try.

The restaurant is cute in general. They have upstairs available for private booking and an outside area with live music. My party and I, arrived there but there was no indoor seating available so we decided to seat outside but there was a 10$ cover charge for each, i am assuming because of the live music which is totally understandable. The band was amazing, i loved their performance, however the service on our table was bad. Everything took so long, and the waitress was nowhere to be found and kind of rude. We ordered drinks and appetizers we got them but no water and no silverware. We had to bother another waitress for those cause ours disappeared for 30 mins but by that time we had to eat with our hands. We asked for another round of drinks and we receive them one whole hour later. We got main courses, the salmon was dreadful and my brother ordered fried pork ribs or something and it was raw. We didn t want to send it back cause it would have taken so long to prepare another one. Also we asked for a beer and the waitress said it s gonna take a while for a beer ..??? Like why? and she recommended we should go inside the bar if we want it fast. Just ridiculous. Definitely not coming back.

I have mixed feelings about this place. Hostess and waitress were both on their cell phones constantly. Hostess actually made us wait until she finished her tiktok video or whatever she was doing. The waitress was nice. Started off good, but went slowly downhill from there. The chicken fried chicken is crispy, but extremely greasy in a bad way, not a fried way. Cream gravy was good. All their peas etc taste straight from a can, no flavor. Potatoes were bland. Salad and dressing are very good. They charge extra for using a card to pay. Your prices are already up there, just add the charge into the food. I hate the sneak attack at the end. The brunette bartender with the thick lush eyebrows, (sorry I dont know your name) was very kind and attentive. Not to just us, but to everyone at her bar. You need more like her! Her smile made us feel welcomed. If you go here, maybe stick to salads and none fried food. Its got a nice atmosphere. Pin up girl fans look above the bar. Vegetarian options: Salads, mushrooms etc Kid-friendliness: Not a place or budget for kids

I ate there Fri for the first time for lunch. My catfish was good and fresh, but my sides werent. The hushpuppies were so hard, seemed as if they were dropped several more times after they were first cooked. I didnt get lunch special, due to server taking a long time to take our order. We had to remind her several times to bring items we asked for, and she wasnt coming back to check for refills. I ordered the banana pudding to go, and had to throw it away . I may give it one more try, because Ive heard good things but my experience wasnt so good at all.

This was a great choice for our Friday night date. Before we got there we did not know about the live music but apparently this is the place to be for great live music. The band was awesome with 80s music and played all the hit songs.... one after another. But we were there for the food and we ordered Mezze platter, Mediterranean Chicken Salad and Voodoo Chicken Tacos. All three items were really good. Tacos were spicy hot with generous fillings. Mezze platter was pretty good with mostly authentic taste items. Margaritas were good and old fashioned was not bad with traditional taste but little too bitter. They have large menu with steak and seafood and burgers. Burgers on a brioche bun was odd and I had to pass on that since there was no other bread choice for the burger. I definitely plan to go back to Ricks place for some more music and next time will have to try the Hawaiian burger. Since we went rhere earlier for dinner we got in without a reservation. Otherwise a reservation is highly recommended. Parking: Parking for Ricks patrons in the rear and valet parking in the front. Other paid street parking was available. Parking lot was not well lit.

Id come here every weekend if i lived here! Great service, great food, great attitude and they didnt pretend to not understand me! I had to walk an extra 4 miles just to land here and really wish i came here first, i passed you twice. Sorry for that! Now on to my bus, thank you for the full belly!

I love the food and the atmosphere, but my husband and I tried to have dinner here Saturday and they wouldn t let us in because I didn t have my ID on me. They told us we had to pay a cover and when we went to pay it she asked for ID, we told her we just wanted to eat and then we re going into Red Dirt. She still said we needed ID. I realized I didn t have mine because I don t drink. She said we couldn t come in without it. I was so frazzled I didn t argue. Later our friends went to eat there and they didn t have to pay any cover and didn t have to show any ID. Super annoying.

The food was okay we started with the grilled Texas bits they were okay I didnt really care for the sauce they were cooked with but overall not too bad our main dishes I ordered the 16oz ribeye, fried okra, and grilled vegetables. The steak was ordered medium rare and the steak was good but the sides were not. The grilled vegetables seemed like they were the scraps from other dishes served extra chard and the okra seemed store bought. My wife ordered the filet Oscar the steak, sauce and crab were great but the sauteed squash was not good at all the au gratin potatoes were good. Our drinks were great I ordered a bourbon on ice and my wife had a couple of the blue bonnets. The service our waiter seemed over worked and made us feel like we needed to hurry but that was about it. They also provide complimentary valet and that is nice since parking sucks. My biggest problem and why I will probably not return was the 3% added to the bill for using a card. This is wild for an upscale restaurant our bill was $200 with the tip and a 3% charge for using a card is unacceptable since its the standard now nobody carries this much cash around.

There are two extra charges from this place on my credit card that should not be there. Would not recommend going here unless you want to randomly be charged an extra $50 for stuff you did not order.

Weary and hungry travelers stumbled upon this restaurant. We ordered our food and every thing was an up charge. We asked to substitute fries for chips for which there was a $4 up charge, we asked to split our entree and there was a $4 up charge. My husband asked the server why is everything an up charge - she replied capitalism. We completed our meal which was fair and not great. We were given our bill and my husband handed the server the credit card. We received the check back with a 3% up charge for using our credit card. We were never told that we were going to be charged for utilizing a credit card. We asked the server and she replied I circled it on your bill. We asked to see the manger who was useless and said that this is what they charge in California. Hello, this is Tyler, Texas. He never accommodated us and was matter of fact. Never going back to this restaurant as they don t want your business.

Yesterday we got to the patio table we sat down and 7 min later a waiter told me that the table was reserved.. I told him that I didnt see any thing on the table saying it was reserved so I sorry!! But the man the customer was there next to him approached to us saying..guys!! the table is my table I paid $50 dollar for it so I got up telling him that it wasnt our fault the table didnt have a reservation tag on it but I saw the man angry and I told him you know what you can have it, we got up to a different table, my point is .. next time a situation like this if the waiter dont have control of a issue like this that I know ..it was their mistake for not putting a reservation tag on..it gonna be worse I was there to have fun not to fight and a fight there the only one who is going to lose credibility is Rikys and I dont want that because I like the place...sorry to say this but is the only way we can fix things to be better to be safe I like Ricks on the Square
