First, its an old bar in an old building, the walls are discolored and the furniture came from the 60s, 70s and 80s. The place is full of wonderful character and history. The staff are super friendly and helpful the customers are old locals and regulars, veterans and blue collar folks who enjoy a laugh and a beer. The bar is hanging with the tankards of regulars since time immemorable and the jukebox is loud. The kitchen, a newer addition, is small and a little slow but the food is top notch. Excellent pub items like tacos and burgers that are fresh and hot. I love the spicy Border War burger or the amazing breakfast tacos. Top it all off with a cold beer or genuinely the best Bloody Mary Ive ever had and go home happy. I love Showdown, its been around since before I was born. It and its patrons have been a part of my life in a good way since I was little. If recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good drink and burger and kind people. Vegetarian options: Nothing vegan because its all cooked on the same flat top, but a solid vegetarian burger that doesnt disappoint. Kid-friendliness: I was brought here as a kid growing up, Ive brought my kids here to eat and play pinball and see family friends. Wheelchair accessibility: Pretty much stair free unless you want to eat on the second floor, lots of older veterans eat and drink here so plenty of accessibility.

If youre looking for some late night good food and games then look no further!! Other than a few out of order pinball machines games were working well, 2 pool tables and nice atmosphere. No burgers/fries but the best late breakfast sandwich Ive ever had on Texas toast. The cook was so sweet and took extra care to make sure the hash browns stayed vegan for my hubby and great munchie foods. Overall wonderful time! 10 out of 10!

This place is probably one of my favorites if not the favorite. Humble, relaxed, retro, grungy and cheap! As far a dive bars go this one will always have a special place in my heart. Best spirit prices on the square and delicious burgers, so delicious in fact that even their veggie burger is delicious. This is the only place I ever actually eat a veggie burger from. Try it with cheese, add grilled mushrooms and a fried egg paired with a cold beer. Best hangover cure hands down!

This was my first bar experience in the US, people are friendly they will check your ID which I appreciate a lot because underage people should not be drinking inside. I did not have much time to enjoy the drink or the food because I was in a hurry; my bus would leave within the next hour and I had to go back to the university to collect my card, but I needed a place for food and drinks. So, despite being in a position that is not so ideal for the first bar experience - I got the friendly vibe that helped me put 5 , besides their food was so good and the quantity was ample; tried their Bloody Mary and it was AWESOME. They have a very nice environment, not shiny and all but I liked the retro vibe, thats why Id give their restroom a plus even though it s not very likeable in other settings, but the vibe was perfect.

Ordered a border burger (no jalapenos) 5 minutes after my friend ordered his. Half an hour after his was ready mine came out with jalapenos. Took it back to the cook and apparently he wasnt told so I waited another half hour and when I went to check on my burger I was told they didnt have the ingredients, didnt they tell u I wasnt going to remake it. The male bartender, who was a solid D cup, said we wont charge you for the burger. Really??? R u effin serious. This was the worst service I ever had at a bar or restaurant. DONT GO TO SHOWDOWN. Id been here in the past and it was a decent experience. Stopped by while in town the other day and the bartender was rude, only serving people they knew. After finally getting a drink got to talking to some regulars and apparently one of the cooks, Justin, has hepatitis c.. so be careful with the food. am new in town and my girl and I stopped by the bar too check it out and it was the best possible experience I could have had. First thing they did was check IDs which I respect a lot. The bar manager immediately seated my girl and I and was so genuine and engaging. We are 21 so we are young and pretty new to the bar experience. The bar is definitely full of older individuals but that didnt stop them from welcoming us with kind regards. While talking too the bar manager and the bartender, I told them I wanted to expand my taste pallet and enjoy the flavor of the drinks, I didnt want to get hammered and act a fool. I told them my favorite types of alcohol and they suggested multiple drinks for me too try. I also asked for a glass of water in between drinks so I could stay hydrated. The staff told me thats a good choice and I I tried out multiple drinks that night. I requested the 1829 made with Tullamore Dew (which I was so happy they had) and they had never made it, however, they improvised to make it for me and it was absolutely fantastic. By the end of the night I told them I was only going to have another drink and the bar manager said it was a good idea to stop after that one. We talked a lot and the staff said that safety of customers is their top priority and that they will watch out for red flag signs while people are drinking and that they will do their best too make sure they get home safe. If you are looking too be part of a family and have a genuine bar experience this is the place. If youre one of the college kids going out trying to get hammered, I wouldnt recommend this bar for you. This is a place you go to respect the drink and the flavor, this isnt a club or dance hall. 10/10 will always come back here

Showdown is an institution in San Marcos. I had my first legal drink here at 21.
