I pay Hays County taxes. Drove an hour to bring three healthy STRAY juvenile cats (someone dumped in the middle of nowhere) and was turned away. Told-You MUST have an appointment to surrender animals. They need to change their web site to saying MUST make an appointment for ANY services or be turned away :(

We adopted our newest best friend on 31 Aug 24 and we just wanted to share what a great experience we had at the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter. Before our arrival at the shelter, we had filled out the on-line adoption form and had narrowed our list to four dogs. Upon arrival, we were greeted promptly and warmly. The front desk lady pulled up each of our candidates and provided us staff notes and went to great lengths to match a suitable dog for our family as we have young grandchildren to consider. She assigned us to a Young Staff Member to show us the dogs in the order of their recommendations. She was professional, compassionate, dedicated and so easy to communicate with. She patiently gave us all the time we needed to make a decision. It was a pretty easy decision, the #1 recommendation was spot-on. Since they had our on-line application on file, the finalization of the adoption paper work went super fast and without a hitch. Since we have had him home, hes adjusting well and there is no doubt that we were blessed to have found him! We took him to our Vet for a routine exam and she was so impressed with the detailed medical records provided by the shelter and how healthy and well cared-for he was during his 4 month stay there. Make no mistake, this is a very busy and noisy place. No doubt, It takes very special and dedicated people to make it all work, our hats are off to you and we thank you all! Recommend if your considering adopting a pet there, fill out the on-line application and narrow down your preferences prior to arriving at the shelter.

i adopted my dog here, and he s one of the best things to ever happen to me. however, since having him i ve kept an eye on the shelters social media pages, and i m thoroughly unimpressed. the staff is incredibly rude and unprofessional. also make no mistake, this is a kill shelter. and many of the animals are malnourished, and unkept. it took an entire month for me to get my dogs weight up enough to no longer have his ribs visible. they are unwilling to help people that bring in animals from the street. overall unprofessional. i love my dog and im so glad to have him, but i have an immense dislike for this place. hopefully y all will do better in the future.

I called them to see if they would intake a stray cat and her young kittens and they said that they would take them but it s a 50/50 chance of them releasing them back in the area??? As if that s not the problem to begin with?? Absolutely wild of them to do and definitely not a solution.

As someone who has never adopted before, this rescue ruined the experience for me and turned me off to the possibility of ever adopting. Nothing but attitude and minimal effort from the front desk over the phone. When confronted in person about the treatment, suddenly that employee isn t there and they have no idea what I m talking about. Told several different stories about where the animal I was interested in was being sent for rescue. Staff can t even answer what rescue the pet is going to or where it s located or who they re coordinating with, apparently they know nothing. When I pressed, then I was told the rescue coordinator handles that but ironically he is out of the office. Then I m shamed by the receptionist because I m interested in small dog breeds and not large dog breeds. You would think that staff would be interested in finding pets their forever homes but apparently that s not the case with this animal shelter.

Don t adopt here unless you want to wait three days for your animal just to take him home and have the vet say he s insanely ill and that the vet at the shelter should ve never had him available for adoption. His surgery will be thousands of dollars and he has multiple medical conditions that they know about the only spoke of the minor and as a animal professional said they were not sure so literally go to any other place that s why the shelters are full because these people do the worst work understaffed or not they just lie to you so they can empty the shelter without giving two F s about your money and your peace of mind and reasoning for truly getting a pet, absolutely disgusting Judy has a terrible attitude and my friend and I were there even another guest noticed how rude she speaks. I even had one of the staff tell me that that s how she is. Even after holding your animal for days, they don t clean them. They don t wipe them down they send them home completely dirty say they re not infested and of course they are.

Rescued a dog from lytle county and was told that they couldnt take the dog because it was from a different county and the county that I tried to go back to to take the dog back to you told me that they were all full and that they would euthanize her so I once again tried the San Marcos regional animal shelter. And point blank told me they are kill shelter and that because I told them I got her in San Marcos it was like lying to a police officer so sadly my only option is to put her back on the streets because I cant have her at my apartment

I ve adopted 3 amazing dogs from this location and each time has been simple and quick. My boyfriend owns 1 dog and I have my amazing 3. Luckily this shelter allows you to do meet and greets to ensure all the dogs get along. There s pros and cons here, some more understandable than others. When you walk in you re greeted nicely by most staff. Only one staff member has been an issue on my end. It seems as though if you re a big adopter you ll be ridiculed for it by this one Asian staff member. While adopting my 3rd dog I was told by my boyfriend that she openly felt some type of way about me adopting yet another dog because I had already adopted 2 others. Most of the animals are very skinny and have been in the shelter for over 100 days. It seems that this shelter puts on a persona online to bring people in but once you re there, it s very sad to see these animals. My latest dog came into the shelter with puppies from what I know and it seems that they didn t even bother cleaning her underneath where the babies came out.. instead they stitched her up and put her right back in a cage. Under this you ll see all the dogs ive adopted, both of my pitbulls were severely underweight and malnourished but you ll see now that they re looking better than ever even after only having my newly adopted pit for a single day. I will give credits to one of my favorite staff there though, she s the sweetest and when she saw my dogs she recognized them right away and said hello. Curly blonde, (I m not sure what your name was) you have my heart, I can see how much you care for the animals and you re appreciated for your hardwork overall come here if you are for sure adopting, window shopping is probably not the best due to the little help that this shelter gets which means it won t be so clean and you will have to work with your new cat or dog to keep them healthy and thriving. I recommend this shelter to everyone no matter what because 90% of the staff have the ambition for these dogs that u would hope any shelter staff would have. No matter what some of the staff say when u adopt, don t let them get to you. No staff member should ever shame someone for adopting another dog. Below is pictures of 3 babies I ve adopted with their original names as well Huckleberry Finn -> Kilo Captain Crunch -> Lady Frankenstein Sarah O Connor -> Zara

I know theyre worked ragged and overflowing with dogs... and I know our whole system for dealing with strays is awful and stressful for everyone involved, so I am taking tat into consideration upon writing this review. The staff at SMRAS clearly care about animals or they wouldnt be working where they do. That being said, I brought in two strays I found in county one of whom was well-fed/cared for but limping, the other- a puppy- was clearly dying of mange. It was a Saturday and their intake people were gone (why dont shelters have WEEKEND STAFF??? If its a funding issue, can we funnel some of the trillions we spend on needless wars into animal shelters?? And old folks homes, too, while were at it!!!) I live on a ranch without adequate fencing and without a bathtub, at the moment, where there would have been no way to begin mange treatment and no way to quarantine the sick puppy so all the ranch dogs didnt also get mange. The puppy already had secondary infections... she was clearly an emergency... but they still turned me away and said they might be able to help on Monday but that Id have to figure out east to do with the dogs for the weekend. They also told me that now that the dogs were in my possession, they were basically *my dogs* and if I just dropped them off where I found them or something like that, I could be prosecuted if anyone saw me and reported it. I sat in their parking lot for well over an hour trying to figure out what to do and without a solid plan, I drove away in tears to figure out how to care for these dogs. My Mom told me she asked a woman from another shelter so, what are you supposed to do when you come upon an animal in need on the weekend- just keep driving because no one will help you? The lady said as sad as she was to say it, that was about right.

I ll never be going to this shelter again worst experience ever I feel bad for all their animals and just hope my boy fights it off since I can t afford the thousand dollar treatment that shoulda been taken care of before his adoption

Intake people should not be working with animals. They refused to take a kitten I brought in and said she would probably be euthanized. It wasnt till I cried and begged them to take her when they said they would spay her than dump her back outside where I found her. This is supposed to be a safe space for animals and for people to take them when they have no other options.... awful treatment....

This is the first place we go when looking for a pet. They try so hard to find homes for all the animals that get brought in from all areas around Hays County. Weve had mixed experiences with the Staff, and the dog kennels are a truly intense experience. I suggest earplugs, but if you forget yours they have some for you. They do let you play with the cats and dogs that you are interested in, but theres a lot of paperwork you have to fill out first.

When I got there, the lady at the desk said they didnt have any more room for dogs and that the dog is now my dog. I told her that I couldnt keep the dog and that I had just found it in the middle of the road and saved its life. She said she couldnt take the dog that the dog was now mine. I was extremely upset for one I called there first, then for them to push a dog on me, VERY UNPROFESSIONAL... I then had to stop at a store in kyle. A lady saw the dog and took her home. i know that people work at shelters because they are pet people and not people persons but the lack of interpersonal skills is just outrageous here. I brought an a stray which was obviously a long dumped former pet into the shelter last year. I spent time gaining this animals trust so I could bring him here where he could hopefully have been helped. They did take him, but not without exceeding condescension and judgement from staff towards me. I felt unwelcome and in the wrong for trying to do the right thing. The poor guy clearly had a localized infection and was malnourished, and his chances of being hit by a car in the area he was found was high. It s also possible he was chipped and someone had been looking for him for a long time! Did I not do the right thing? I think about this often and tear up wondering this as it seems the lady at the counter didn t think so. I truly hope there was a good outcome for him but I doubt it now given how negative and unapproachable staff was. If I were in the financial position to keep the animal I would have, but that doesn t change the fact that strays in the community are the responsibility of our locally funded shelters! He deserved help. And it isn t the place of the shelter staff to insist that it s my responsibility or that I had something to do with it. I m just flabbergasted at the unkindnesses truthfully. Being rude does not help the animals find homes. Apparently if it were up to the woman at the counter, unfortunate homeless pets would remain on the street? Or with people who can t care for them. A woman came in while I was there with a basket of kittens and also received cruel treatment from the same woman. Why didn t you fix the mother? She demanded. We can t take them. She was just as judge mental to this woman and wouldn t allow her even a few seconds to explain herself. I would love to help this shelter promote but from what I can tell they are unresponsive to their social media and hostile to visitors. They need new staff. I understand this line of work can be exhausting, depressing, and painful to participate in, for that reason, those who cannot handle it with grace need to move on without shame.

Amazing facility. Staff well trained and compassionate about the terribly hard job they do. So many precious animals await their forever homes!! This facility works hard to maintain a place that protects and nurtures animals to the best of their ability. The kennels are clean and animals given the best of care. We chose to visit and check out the available medium size dogs to possibly adopt. It is heartbreaking to see how many beautiful animals are alone and frightened without family to love and nurture them. These animals have nothing but loyalty and love to offer. We are blessed to have adopted a sweet little female dog who has already filled our home with smiles and kisses. She is filling our hearts and home with joy that was missing from the loss of.our precious chronically ill rescue of 4 years ago who crossed the rainbow Bridge last week. We are forever grateful for our new furkid. Thank you to all staff who work tirelessly with compassion and kindness to help others find new family members...furkids to bless their lives. I couldnt keep them long term because I am in the middle of a divorce and having to relocate. Nobody picked them up, so finally I tried to bring to the San Marcos Animal Shelter. They kept asking that I come back at a different date, questioned everything I had to tell them and threatened me with a class c misdemeanor if I had lied to them. I tried to save these pups lives and got treated like a criminal. I already felt bad enough having to drop off the dogs and then was treated like I was garbage.

I don t recommend this shelter if you intend on adopting a cat. My partner and I adopted a sweet kitten from here just about a month ago, and after constant medications and vet visits, we have to put him down due to complications because of FIP. I am not upset at the time and effort we put into caring for him after adoption, im upset at knowing that he could ve been adopted while that sick initially. It is also quite sad to me how long the shelter took to even treat his illness once we brought it up, he didn t see a vet until 5 days later! This shelter is jam packed with animals, especially dogs. And unfortunately in our cat s case, he didn t receive enough attention soon enough to prevent his URI from turning into FIP. We are incredibly heartbroken over this entire situation.

Betty (now biscuit because she s always making biscuits) is the coolest cat ever. The employees and volunteers here care about the animals and it really shows. Thank y all so much for bringing some of my closest friends into my life.

This place is really wonderful and the staff love and care for their animals so much. They are going through a tough time with over crowding right now and are working through it the best they can. They need adopters, fosters, and donations. If you cant do that please spay/neuter and microchip your pets to help them. They

I did get my cat here and she s amazing, but the shelter had little to no knowledge about her before i adopted her. They couldn t tell me past behaviors or personality, they didn t tell me that she was PREGNANT, and they said she was 3 years old but there s no way that she s older than 1. She is an older kitten at most. This shelter is just okay, not better and not worse.

Im a foster pet owner with this shelter. I take good care of my foster pet and the staff here helps me out any time I need anything. When I dropped by to return some items that they loaned me that I no longer needed, they recognized my foster pet immediately. They are wonderful! I just hope I can help them out more often. For now, I am housing one of the dogs that is available for adoption.

We adopted a dog from here. We were told she was heartworm negative. We took her to our vet TWO DAYS after we got her and she s positive. Not to mention, she was in kidney failure. The night we got her, she went into a seizure and we have spent over $1000 in medical care so she didn t die. Thank god she s better now but they DO NOT CARE about these animals.

A mama cat dropped a batch of kittens in our back yard. We eventually had to drop them at the shelter. We are absolute animal lovers and could not stand the thought of anything happening to them. The shelter staff are animal lovers too and they do a great job!!! Please adopt from the shelter before you buy a pet.

Knowledgeable and friendly staff make difficult decisions a little less traumatic for pets and owners. Non-judgmental workers and overall warm and supportive environment at least on the front end as I dont have much experience in the back period. And sudden challenging circumstances which can be costly on the budget were easily resolved with arrangements that were offered

I had to give up my cat due to financial issues. I couldnt pay for his medical expenses. He got poisoned. I gave him up to the shelter thinking maybe they will help him out because they have the resources. The ladies were nice to me tho. Im leaving this bad review because I found out that they killed my cat within 2hrs of dropping him off. They didnt even gave him a chance. Im just rlly heartbroken. They didnt even check if he had rabies, or if his behavior change was because of the poison after they killed him.

Staff was very nice, but we werent too happy about the cat room. All of them were locked into their cages, so you couldnt get a good sense of the cats personalities. Most of them seemed very depressed. The shelter should take a tip from PAWS in Kyle, TX. Let the cats out of their cages in the room and let them socialize.

I had to pick up my roaming rascal, Falcor, after he decided to take a stroll thru the neighbors yard - just checking things out. The staff, although it was 10 minutes after they closed, let me in and were very courteous about helping me to spring my pup and get him back home. They never rushed me or made me feel uncomfortable about arriving late.
