What an incredible meal at Magpie! We visited on a Thursday evening and were able to take advantage of the selected wines that were 50% off. The milk bread was incredible and the butternut squash was perfectly roasted and wonderfully spiced. I can t say enough about the smoked duck with pickled green beans, so good. We sgared two main courses, the pork belly and ribeye. Absolutely delicious! It was a very memorable meal and we can t wait to return!!

A not so hidden gem in downtown SA, we visited The Magpie on a Saturday evening. The food absolutely blew our minds! The Dak Galbi is the best chicken dish I have ever had in a restaurant. Words fail to describe their signature butter cake! All the dishes are shareable. We also have the smoked duck appetizer - it was ok, but only because Im not a fan of lukewarm/cold meat dishes. Overall, the food is simply amazing and different from anywhere else in SA. Keep in mind, space is extremely limited, so reservations are recommended. The restaurant itself has a no nonsense feel to it, be aware that the tables are quite close to each other. Its not a place to linger and stay by yourself for a while. The star is the food alone!! Parking: Commo parking lot available. Kid-friendliness: Not suitable for very small kids.

Magpie is so incredible it s hard to describe to others. My family has been coming here for the past two years as often as we can because there is no other restaurant that pulls off the flavors that they do here. It s crazy. Every single thing on this menu is just a ludicrous explosion of flavor. Just order everything. Try everything. You ll be blown away! Also, Kenzie is the best

I have been here about 4 times and my favorites are the bread (it s just bread, but it s so good), pork belly and the dak galbi. Getting hungry while writing this. Happy we have these guys in SA!

Nice place with a very different menu. This is not a place for big eaters. Dishes are meant to be shared but are quite small. Prices are not bad. Smoked duck was marvelous. Pesto pasta was my favorite. Citrus salad was good and refreshing. Butternut squash is also very good. Rib eye was excellent quality beef and quite good. Crispy pork belly was just okay for me, but others loved it. There were five of us. With the two loaves of milk bread we ordered and one loaf comped by our very attentive server, we were all surprisingly satisfied and pleased with our meal. Wheelchair accessibility: Dining area is a little tight for a wheelchair but this staff will make it work. Also, there is ample outside seating.

My name is Sangat I was there on Friday, May 10 at 7 PM. I really wanted to like this place. I went on a fancy date so the company was really good and the service was really good as well. I ordered the pesto pasta, the ribeye the chicken (dak galbi) two desserts, and the bread and the tofu. Everything was disappointing. I really really wanted to like this place. ( I m saying it again cause that s how sad I am) I met the owner at vice versa coffee. He was a wonderful man. He told me that his wife runs the kitchen and how she s worked in a Michelin star restaurant. So the expectations were really high, but low and behold everything was bland. The bread was simply bread with butter sloppily prepared the butter crammed underneath the hot bread weird presentation or lack of care I have no idea. The chicken or DAK GALBI was dry and flavorless the sauce that it came in was doing all the heavy lifting. The tofu just tofu with a crispy top and bottom which gave it a nice texture but was just a simple tofu at the end of the day. Part of the reason I m leaving this review is the ribeye was ordered medium and was seared/cooked so poorly. Parts were raw and parts were overcooked super inconsistent all around. It was sort of assembled in a circle kind of like a volcano so the pieces at the bottom were still hot so they were able to cook through a little more but the pieces towards the top and scattered throughout the middle were not cooked. So essentially, I eat raw steak at the top and hard steak at the bottom. I mean the ribeye is probably the easiest cut of steak to cook properly and the most forgiving. If the waiter didn t ask me how I wanted it cooked. I would ve still left a bad review because the food was bad, over priced and poorly prepared. The only perfect thing was probably the butter cake but the chocolate mouse was not good and very small as well. Now I can appreciate fine dining but the price did not justify the size of that desert and maybe the complexity of flavor is going over my head, but it did not taste very good either. I m going there to experience a smart chefs well thought out menu but all the simple options on the menu were amazing because simple food is good. Like pesto, pasta, and butter cake served with berries and cream. And butter with bread and pan fried tofu. I felt like Larry David on Curb Your Enthusiasm. Bread with butter are you serious? That s always gonna taste good. I ve been to places like this. I understand that chic vibe, but it is pretentious and unnecessary. And funnily enough any complex Korean Asian inspired dish that I tried was objectively bad. Not to mention a terrible steak dish. Coming from an Asian cooking background and cooking restaurants for most of my life I can appreciate a good depth of flavor, especially in Asian cuisine, but this just didn t make the cut. I cooked in northern Indian restaurants around Texas and a Mexican restaurant. That s not much of a qualification to judge food for a Michelin star chef, but an even better qualification .I have a mouth and I tasted everything. I want to leave this review because I m peeved. I really wanted to like his place and I didnt and I feel like I over paid for a meal that was not bad. Just inconsistent and poorly prepared. Overall just kind of needless experience. I m sorry to be so harsh, but I can t remember the last time a restaurant experience disappointed me so much. Especially with my expectations being so high. I Ended up spending 225 with the tip. I m sorry magpie I really wanted to like y all. The steak did y all in man. Cover the steak in ponzu and fried onions all you want but if it s not cooked correctly you guys are not a respectable establishment. Nothing met my expectations. They were high expectations, but very feasible. Again, I m very sorry about this review. I understand what it s like owning a restaurant it s very unforgiving.

About a week ago, I made reservations on Tock to visit @magpiesanantonio this past Saturday for dinner. As part of making the reservations, there s a deposit of $10 per person that is refunded after your visit. Hubby and I had visited a long while back and ate outside. This time we were seated indoors. Hubby and I had the City Orchard Pineapple Cider, which was very refreshing. All the foods are meant for sharing so we did. We started with the Citrus Salad and the Smoked Duck. The duck came with sweet potato chips. Love the contrast! We had the Milk Bread, Butternut Squash, Red Snapper, and Dak Galbi (half chicken). Each dish had its own burst of unique flavor. The sauces were the best part! We ended the meal with Chocolate Mousse, which was divinely so rich paired well with the cream. This was an excellent meal! Melissa s service was on point! If you want an elevated experience, this place is a hidden gem and a must try. It also seems that they re doing brunch at the Golden Goose on Sundays as well. Check out @satx.aapi to download the passport and see the participating restaurants and businesses!

We visited this restaurant on May 11th with a 530pm reservation. Placed our drink, starter and main course order by 540pm. Received our drinks and starter meals right away. The bread was good, but the citrus salad ok. At about 610pm we noticed that other tables that placed their order after us had already received their drinks, starter plates and main courses. At about 620 pm, we were told that our food would be out shortly. At 639pm we had not received anything, so we asked for the check. As we had just paid $60.62 for 2 glasses of wine, a citrus salad and bread and were leaving our table, another server brought one of the dishes to our table, but we were already frustrated with this place and decided to continue leaving. Im all about supporting local restaurants and understand the rise of food cost and employee salaries, but at the same time I expect good service and quality food.

We had a mixed experience at The Magpie. The food is great. But the service and other aspects of the experience were mediocre at best. In a word, the reservation platform/deposit is tacky. You have to create a profile and put a deposit down to make a reservation. Im sure the restaurant will rationalize this by saying it cuts down on staff time dealing with phone calls or the number of cancellations - still, tacky. Second, our server was friendly, but the overall service was unimpressive. Our meal totaled over $50 per person, and yet our waters were never refilled, plates were never cleared, and we were brought the check before asking. We probably would have stayed longer, ordered more food/drinks, but we were pretty taken aback by being brought the check without asking. To boot, the gratuity was automatically set to 22%. I think the food here is excellent, but with the prices they charge thats the expectation. The service was not excellent. Theres a difference between a casual setting and bad service. This was the latter. Its disappointing, but feels representative of San Antonios trendy restaurants. Overcharging for an experience that wouldnt cut it in another city.

I really enjoyed this spot for a low key date night. Reservations are highly recommended, they have only a couple tables inside. They have outdoor dining tables which will be nice when it s warmer out. Parking spots are lacking though, so plan to arrive early. Melissa was our server and she was great. She gave us some good suggestions and was very attentive. We started with the smoked duck and oyster mushrooms for appetizers. I LOVED the mushrooms. Crispy and hot when served and just cooked perfectly. The smoked duck was good, but nothing spectacular. My husband was the harsher critic. He felt the food was lacking overall flavor compared to how visually appealing it looked. But his review and opinion isn t my own. The pork belly was cooked perfectly and balanced nicely with the chili paste. The dak galbi (chicken) was just okay. I probably should ve ordered something different from what I can make at home. Although I did enjoy the robust flavoring under the chicken paired with the cabbage and Korean rice cake more than the chicken itself. If they are serving butter cake for dessert, order 2 for yourself. It was my favorite dessert to end our meal. Overall, I loved the ambiance, service and food.

The Magpie has become one of my top favorite restaurants of all time, not just because of the quality of the food but also because of the ambience and the hospitality. From the moment you walk in to the moment you leave, you get the sense that they care for you and it feels less like a dining experience and more like you are amongst friends and family. But let s talk about the food for a sec. Being vegetarian, I ordered their milk bread, tofu dish, and the Brussel sprouts. Let me tell you, that milk bread is EVERYTHING. Just the right amount of toast on the outside, and the right amount of light fluffiness on the inside. The milk bread paired really well with the tofu and the glazed Brussel sprouts. My non vegetarian friends ordered the pork belly and the chicken dish and their reactions were priceless (in a good way, they said both were amazing). And I didn t believe it until I tried it myself but the butter cake is out of this world good. It nearly melts in your mouth on the first bite! I don t usually ever eat dessert after dinner, but this was worth stuffing my face for. Will 1000% come back for more when I m back in SA. :)

If I could give this place more than 5 stars, I would! It is truly a magnificent restaurant run by people with not only a passion for food, but also a passion for the community and creating unforgettable dining experiences. The first time I went here, I didnt have a great experience, but I have never been as impressed as I was by the restaurants commitment to make it right. And not only did they make it right, they exceeded all expectations one could have for a good meal. I brought my parents from out of town here for their first meal off the plane. To say they were floored is an understatement. We were smart and ordered the ribeye - it was a symphony of flavors that I would never be able to replicate at home. And my gosh the meat was AMAZING- so succulent and cooked to perfection!!! What an excellent way to showcase the best Texas has to offer for my folks- it was better than any steak weve had at Michelin rated places in Paris, it was that good. And the chicken was the sleeper hit for us. My mom NEVER orders chicken at a restaurant and rarely enjoys eating it. But she couldnt get enough of the chicken at this place and even went in for thirds. That was unprecedented and kinda fun to watch to be honest. But I also really just love the vibe and ambiance of this place. San Antonio is lucky to have these people running this amazing restaurant :)

We had the smoked duck, which is a staple on the menu, and was better than I remember. We also had the dak galbi which is Korean fried chicken with a savory gochujang sauce and rice cakes that was delicious. The pork belly was amazing as well. We also got the snapper which although was a smaller portion- the flavors are phenomenal. We shared our plates so with the chicken being a larger portion, it all was very filling in the end. This place is AMAZING! The food is absolutely sensational and the service IMPECCABLE! The price is more than worth it, especially for a special occasion. We arrived with Uber half an hour early and sat outside. We did not expect any service but a lovely gentleman named Adam came out, apologized for for not being open, but still offered us water. He came back with water and menus. Even 20 minutes before officially opening, he offered us beverages which we happily accepted. This was in no way expected, but very much appreciated. It was our anniversary dinner and they made it extra special for us. We are very grateful! Dietary restrictions: The menu CLEARLY states which items contain wheat and soy. Parking: Parking is free and more than adequate, but I can understand if it gets more difficult later into the evening. We went on a Sun late afternoon and parking was fine. Wheelchair accessibility: The restaurant is tiny, but one level with a ramp to the parking lot.

Magpie was a hidden gem. A small place with only about 4 tables on the inside and about 8 outside. The service was prompt. We called last minute on a Saturday and got a reservation for outside. The spot they offered us was a bit cramped but we made it work. They offered us another table but there was no fan and it was hot so we chose the cramped but near the fan table. The menu was short but that made me feel like everything on it was there for a purpose. No fillers or blah dishes. And I was right. Everything except the cauliflower was spectacular. The cauliflower was good, but I dont need to eat it again. The salmon, the lamb ragu with homemade noodles and the chicken liver mousse I would come back for over and over. Thanks Magpie!

This is a long review but I love to give places credit when they were as great as this place. I ate here early this evening with my wife and had to run home to leave a review. Everything I ate here was fantastic. We had the Bread, XO Mushroom, Yuringi Chicken, Crispy Pork Belly, Chocolate mousse and Butter cake . Bread - Was hesitant to order this because I wanted to try something more unique but after trying it, I will order this EVERY time I come here. The milk bread was toasted perfectly and had the softest interior. The butter w/aged salt set it off. I honestly could eat this all day everyday. XO Mushroom - I dont know what to say about this other than it was great. The mushrooms were cooked nicely and the sauce was the bomb. Yuringi Chicken - It was fried to perfection, super juicy and the chilli/soy/vinegar sauce was great. This is eaten as a lettuce wrap and I ended up dipping my leftover lettuce in the sauce and enjoying it. Crispy Pork Belly - This dish was also fantastic and the pork belly just melted in my mouth. I should have asked for more kimchi slaw cause it set the pork off but I forgot because I was too busy wondering how they got the bok choy on the plate to taste as good as it did. Chocolate Mousse - This dish was very rich and perfect for someone who wants a dessert that isnt too sweet but will satisfy the dessert craving. My wife loves dark chocolate and this was perfect for her. Butter Cake - This was lighter than the mousse and a little sweeter which was right up my alley. When I think of a dessert after a great meal, this is what I want. After eating there I cannot wait to go back and try the dishes I have not tried yet (and get some more bread!). Every dish we were served was delicious and left us wanting more. Though the food was great, I have to say the people at the restaurant really made the experience much more enjoyable. They were all so kind, helpful and truly seemed to enjoy what they were doing. Though they were busy, they stopped and talked, answered all questions we had and even explained the backstory to the restaurant name. I have never in my life seen a restaurant group as smiley as everyone at the Magpie was. Their attitudes and smiles definitely rubbed off on us and had us leaving the venue full, happy, and excited to return. Thank you everyone at The Magpie for our experience tonight!

Ate at Magpie last night before the Van Gough exhibit and it did not disappoint. Staff was fantastic! We had a table for 4 and shared everything. Duck was amazing and my first time having octopus, which was cooked perfectly. The snapper was also cooked to perfection. It s a very small restaurant and outside is not an option for me at over 100 degrees. Nice shopping center with plenty of parking which was a concern of mine.

We love supporting local, and have been to Magpie before and appreciate that the switch out their menu and are family owned. However this visit was underwhelming and quite honestly a bit disappointing. Between the two of us we got a steak, one side, an app and one glass of wine. Cost came to $106, BEFORE tip. Portion sizes were pretty small too. The cauliflower was good, the potatoes a bit funky for us. The steak was were we got disappointed. We expected for $50 for a steak it would be a good size piece of meat and/or with at least one side. It was pretty small cut of meat, and to make it worse the half the steak was all fat. Like they cut up little chunks of fat and hid it under the better pieces (that was still a bit fatty) to make it look like a bigger steak. Flavor was good though. We mentioned it to the server and she said she would give us half off. She only gave us $14 off and even with that and tip we paid $106 for what was basically a meal for one. We ended up having to drop another $30 else where to get more food. ********* This has been resolved. One of the owners Eugene personally reached out, he was super kind and understanding. He apologized and offered to fully refund the amount. We still wanted to support their family owned restaurant and suggested a gift card instead. We re happy to go back and try Magpie again.

Dinner at Magpie is such a treat. Each dish manages to be both sophisticated and homey, with twists that add fun. The tofu has a crackly crust with an addictively sesame rich flavor -- its the dish everyone at the table vies for the last bite of. The milk bread is perfect. Every pasta dish we tried was plate-lickingly good. And the butter cake should be illegal. The small staff is wonderfully kind and helpful. This is our favorite San Antonio restaurant.

When the chef running the window goes by Chill Pickle it s really hard to go wrong. The pickle plate was incredibly unique. Each vegetable hitting different in all the right ways. The smoky mushrooms looks like vegan uni, or some kind of fresh organ, the texture is amazing, and the level of smokiness combined with chipotle truly satisfies. On to the mains, the pork belly came out first. If there was liquid meat genre this dish would win. Not only crispy but it just melted in my mouth and all the juices coated every surface. The fried chicken dish can easily be a whole sandwich and as the waitress said, the sauce is 10/10. Wrapped it all up with the oxtail ragu and between the three of us we are so full and every flavor was perfectly balanced. I came to magpie when they first opened and it wasn t memorable, my second visit to magpie has convinced me to come again and again. shout out to Nico for convincing me to come and bring my sister and my best friend. This was our second visit in 3 weeks. We love the atmosphere, service with a smile. The menu has some good dishes ( duck charcuterie, bread, pasta carbonara, chicken ssam), others not so good (japchae-glass noodles), a dish True Foods Austin makes much better with less sodium. Changing the menu more frequently would encourage me to return before the next season but the real problem is the slow food service. Three weeks ago half of our party received their mains 30 minutes after the others did. Their kitchen is small AND the chef insists on doing everything so expect the dishes to arrive slowly.

FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY I have found an amazing 5 star restaurant in San Antonio. The food was delicious, our table practically ordered the whole menu. There is not a restaurant in San Antonio that can compare to the quality of food you get here. Highly recommend the milk bread, chicken sam, glass noodles, lobster and cheesecake. I would note that the menu is seasonal so it does change. One piece of advice is to make a reservation!!! This seems to be very important since it is a smaller restaurant. Wine menu is excellent and service is great. I really wish the Magpie continued success and I hope to see it continue to get bigger. Kudos to the chef on her amazing menu.

Nestled in the middle of a small refurbished appearing strip mall, Magpie fills the air with delicious aromas and the sounds of much needed conversations. Dine inside or out; inside if you like to peek behind the curtain while watching the Chef create her masterpieces or outside where there is more room for larger parties. The menu has the perfect combination of vegetarian and meatetarian options. Roasted roots + veggies was a delicious blend of lightly seasoned Brussels sprouts, parsnip, beets, sweet potatoes, broccolini, etc. lightly charred and combined with a perfectly spiced sauce, elevating the flavor of each member of this dish. Delicious alone or paired with any other item. Look ma I m eating my veggies again! NZ ORA King Salmon was cooked to perfection with properly seasoned crispy skin over a bed of charred asparagus accompanied by a magical herb beurre blanc sauce, all of which would cause pause in any conversation as it draws your senses in. A bottle of Moscatel wine came highly recommended and did not disappoint. A proper pairing to highlight a whirlwind of flavors experienced tonight. My hats off to the Chef.

A truly Superb Restaurant! Everything we ate or drank was delicious. Beginning with a careful selection of interesting and unusual wines, the food invites joy. Matches between dishes and wine are easy to make, especially with Gene s advice. And Sue s dishes are exceptional. She is an exquisite chef. We began with the Arancini, which I highly recommend with its richly tasting sauce of a base of long-cooked leeks. We shared three main dishes - the halibut, the ribeye and the chicken yuringi. The halibut was cooked perfectly with lots of flavor and something hard to find in the US, crispy skin that contrasted nicely with the texture of the halibut. The crispy chicken was accompanied by a complex sauce with a perfect balance of that included chiles. And the ribeye was simply perfect. We completed a really fine meal with butter cake. What a wonderful find in San Antonio!

Nestled in a wonderful artsy hidden strip between an excellent brewery and an up and coming cake shop, the Magpie is a wonderful locally owned journey into fusion Korean with distinctly French technique. Seating is limited, but safely spaced which is greatly appreciated. Our table ordered a selection of appetizers and entrees across the board from the deliciously spicy haricot verts to the perfectly seared scallops and brussels and of course the house blend kimchi. However, if you are looking to really level up your dining experience, do yourself a favor and order the Lamb Pie. Words cannot do justice how ridiculously flaky and crispy the buttered crust came out. Our server told us the butter is even made in house which would explain the richness and freshness of the whole plate. Well return just for the Lamb Pie and their berry cheesecake. If you find yourself near downtown, skip the Riverwalk and the nightmare of parking and pull up a bench at The Magpie.

Overall underwhelmed. The general feeling I had was that the portion sizes given were far too small for the amount paid for the dishes. I believe theres was a $9 potato dish that we ordered that was essentially a small serving of shredded potatoes with sour cream on top. Flavors ranged from good to excellent among the plates, though after spending around $80 between three people, two of the three diners left hungry. The chicken plate that we ordered was excellent, though what confused me was that our server told us that he was delighted that we were ordering what he considered the best dish they served, and that not many people order it. When we were first seated, he made no mention of any specialties or personal recommendations, so I can see why more people might not have given it a try. There are a few traditional Korean dishes on the menu, but this is not what I would call a Korean restaurant, as most of the dishes are not Korean. If youre looking to try something new, this could be a good choice for you, but I would personally not recommend this if youre looking for traditional Korean food or if youre looking for good value in portion sizes.

Came for their last lunch menu. They will be starting their dinner service on the 23rd and abandoning lunch. On to the review. The food, while not traditional Korean, was just amazing. Service was on point. Attentive, but not hovering. My only observation was that the pricing and size of plates was a bit much for a lunch menu. Looking forward to trying dinner service.
