I found myself in the DFW area not long after getting my general license, I saw that Ham Radio Outlet had a physical location nearby and decided it was somewhere I had to go. Really glad I did, I stopped in an Eddie helped me get a full kit put together. I really appreciate having a physical place to go to piece out everything you need, especially as somebody new to the hobby. Highly recommend this location and HRO in general if you are looking for radio gear.

I am new to the amateur radio world. I have been in a few times to just look and absorb. The staff is patient and friendly even though Im sure new people asking questions can get annoying. I just want to say thank you to the team. Your efforts dont go unnoticed. I really enjoy being able to ask questions that I may not really understand yet. When I decide on what equipment I want, I will certainly be buying from ham radio outlet.

This is a good store with nice people, but they do one thing thats absolutely terrible. Depending on what you order, they will require a a signature for delivery. I was able to override that requirement, however, they should tell people BEFORE they finalize the order that a signature will be required. Many people might want to have things sent to their office as opposed to their home address. Before ordering, call them by telephone, and find out if a signature will be required.

I had heard from several people how this store would have what I need for my ham radio addiction. I was not disappointed. There is an enormous inventory of all kinds of ham radio products including cables, manuals, handhelds, base stations, antennas, software, and accessories of all kinds. They also have a selection of pre-owned items for sale. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful.

Your choice of shipping companies is the absolute worst in the industry. FedEx is a total joke. I have used every shipping company there is and time after time FedEx is ridiculous and inept. HRO sent my purchase via FedEx ground to be delivered on a weekday with a window of 10:30 am to end of business day with SIGNATURE REQUIRED REALLY, how ignorant of a business model is that ? Some people work for a living to be able to buy radios from you. FedEx is by far the hardest shipping company to get in touch with an actual human being, after a dozen or more attempts to actually SPEAK to someone at FedEx I finally got to talk to an individual that just learned the English language last week. They were absolutely useless and could not tell me anything more than the FedEx app tells me, which is very minimal. Your choice of shipping companies directly reflects on your business model and how HRO runs it s business. I will not be purchasing anything else from HRO as long as you continue to use FedEx as your shipping company. P.S. The only response that HRO can come up with is a copy and paste from their website that does absolutely nothing to explain why they use a totally inept shipping company. FedEx s terrible service is a direct reflection on your company, YOU CHOSE FEDEX, not me.

I ordered a brand new Kenwood TM-V71a dual band radio and received the incorrect mic (one with no dtmf buttons). Contacted the manager at HRO Plano and was given the run around for months, complied with all their requests and was finally was told to contact Kenwood. Talked to Kenwood, they requested a receipt. HRO was unable to provide a proper receipt that Kenwood would accept. Never got a mic from Kenwood or HRO so in the end I had to buy the correct mic (MC62) from another company for $70.53 at my own expense. Never will I buy from HRO again. Purchase your gear from a reputable company, not HRO. Yes. I said I ordered it, I never stated I had any interaction with sales staff until the incorrect mic was shipped. Im not sure what youre attempting to insinuate. You were contacted within 10 days (your Plano manager chose to do nothing about it) and gave me the run around for months after which you THEN told me to contact the manufacturer. I did indeed expect a brand new product with the accessories that are shown on the Kenwood website. I can not control what Kenwood asks for for service or that they were not satisfied with the receipt you provided. I complied with all your requests with no resolution. Im simply letting others know of your after purchase customer service or complete lack thereof. Im sorry youre as unhappy with your managers handling of the situation as I am. I made you aware of the issue with the receipt and your manager did nothing further so that falls on you. As previously stated I did contact Kenwood and they would do nothing with the receipt you provided and you WERE made aware of this fact. So in the end I still had to pay for the correct one. Your manager could have contacted Kenwood to attempt to resolve the issue, yet chose not to. And yes of course Im upset with the situation. So making a call to Kenwood yourself is too much to ask. Got it.

What a tremendous purchasing experience! Given the rapid changes in technology, and advancements in a host of amateur radio products it was great to deal with the folks at the HRO Plano TX store! In addition to being highly technically competent, Manager Robert Evans had a professional and customer focused disposition that made my experience absolutely excellent! He provided me with everything I needed to make the best informed decision that I could make in selecting my FTDX 101MP, speakers, and M1 Reference microphone. Mr. Evans has a wealth information and the personal practical experience to go along with it! While some of the other stores I spoke with spouted off the specifications sheet, Mr. Evans was able to discuss a set of use cases from which I could align my purchasing decisions with my short and longer term goals! I wanted to take to time to say without his assistance, I would have most likely not purchased from HRO. Great Team there, and Mr. Evans certainly reflects their commitment to quality service before and after the customers purchase! Keep hiring and retain this exceptional level of expertise. As a Technical Director and Leader within the defense community, it is easy to spot individuals to really value the work they do and have a commensurate work ethic.

Long time customer. Here lately their attention to shipping is less than adequate. Two weeks ago my item just sat there for a day with email saying shipping label created. Call next day the guy adamant it shipped. Finally reluctantly went and looked and sure enough still there. Yesterday ordered at 11am same label created. Call late this evening and stated yep it s gone. USPS says only label created so a 2 day delay. Used to be order by mid day out that evening. I think the shrug off demeanor says something is wrong. DX next orders.

Ive been licensed a while but still dont have any radios. I was in Weatherford and made the 1 hr trip to Plano to check out the store. Bad traffic, plenty of tolls. As others have indicated, you may be more likely to get a goodbye than a hello. I was looking for a telescoping fiberglass mast, which from the website I gathered were in stock, but I couldnt find them. There were several radios on display and if I were more knowledgeable or had some assistance, I would have looked more closely. The prices were competitive and if Id seen a mast, I could have saved a little on freight (but lost a good bit of that on tolls). I just cant see myself going back to this store; if you lived very nearby and could easily drop in, it would be different.

After many years I finally decided it was time to order an amplifier. Knowing that the Ameritron amps were showing out of stock I still chose to order from HRO instead of directly from MFJ.. I filled out my order for the ALS-500MR, a 75 amp MFJ power supply, the MFJ-994B tuner and a couple other items. Just as I submitted my order I noticed that this store sowed having the amp in stock but a little later they were out of stock again. Seems these folks filled my order immediately then shipped it all UPS. Ive ordered a few items since the Plano store has been open and the service has always been absolutely great. 5 Stars isnt really enough of a rating for how great these folks are. Thanks to the crew in Plano.

Update: The store is now open for limited capacity!! I was able to go in for the first time in 2020 (for me). I was also able to get everything I needed and then some! Hello super small diameter antenna wire for a QRP EFHW!! Great staff as always, helpful and knowledgeable. Please visit them and keep them open. HRO is much more critically essential than most people think. Lets not loose them to the likes of Amazon. In an emergency, HRO will be needed for critical communication, parts and knowledge. Amazon wont be there for the people... HRO will. Closed to IN STORE customer due to Cov-19. You cannot enter the store at this location which is a shame. Despite that, this is easily a 5 star store. The company has a laundry list of HIGH quality parts to feed every HAMs need, and then some. Support your locals as its important that they exist in an emergency either personal or public. Keep Em Open!

My recent dealings with HRO Plano were all 5 Star! From my initial phone conversations with Eddie to several lengthy email and phone conversations with Robert I was treated with respect and professionalism. Eddie helped me decide on the rig that would meet my requirements. He never pushed me in a particular direction. He patiently answered my numerous questions. When I did decide, he met me outride the store, picked up my trade-in, and brought the new rig and power supply to my trunk. When I had some issues with set-up, Robert communicated with me via email and then had extended phone conversations with me on his own time. Robert helped me over some hurdles and got me up and running. As I told Robert, You were an Elmer to a 78 year old ham who wanted to learn new things! Would I recommend HRO? With hams like Eddie and Robert serving the public, I would say a resounding, Yes.

I ve been shopping at ham radio outlet for a year or so. I stopped by once before I got my ham radio license and they still treated me awesome. They showed me every radio I wanted to see and made recommendations. Allowed me to browse and answered many of my questions. I later purchased a vx-6r during covid while the store was closed. They processed my order and met me at the door to give me my product. Yesterday I picked up a d74a. I ordered the product an hour before closing and called up there to see on the off chance if I could pick it up the same day. (Remember an hour before closing) Jason told me to head down there and they would push my order through so I didn t have to wait until Monday. I have continuously had awesome customer service. One of the few remaining brick and mortar radio stores in the country. Im privileged to live locally. Service is always excellent. They stock all of the major brands and several of the smaller ones. They always have accessories ready to go to get you on the air as well.

Disappointing. As a newly licensed person I was hoping for some advice on what to buy to get started. Not at all helpful and I just ended up walking out. Wont be coming here again. I wonder why people say ham radio is dying?

I was on a business trip to the DFW area and have been planning to make a stop in the store for a few months. I got licensed a few months ago and have no ham radio stores near me so I am stuck with clicking on the Internet. I wanted to get a dual band mobile unit for my truck and had it narrowed to two different units. I had lots of facts but really wanted to see them in person, hence why I waited to go to the store. The salesman was helpful but not nearly as much as I had hoped. As far as the radio went, I actually knew more about it than he did. When trying to select the proper antenna and mount, I left with more questions but he did give me some good advice on that. Overall, it was a good experience but not quite what I had expected. I m thankful for their help.
