They have the nerve to give you an estimated time that your food will be ready. THIS PLACE HAS BEEN CLOSED SINCE JULY FOR NON PAYMENT OF RENT!!! THEY ARE SCAMMERS. Dont get the French toast. It was hard and would taste better if you made it at home. The hashbrown casserole was just potatoes and cheese. The egg had no season. They didnt even give me salt or pepper. One waitress is handling the front of the store, taking orders for dine in, and over the phone. That sucks

Terrible service! I was the only person in the place. The gentleman began making my plate, then a woman comes in and he stops in the middle of making my food to talk to her and make phone calls. My plate is literally sitting out in the open as he holds this conversation with this woman who came after me. I was patient and waited for a little while before I just walked out. Ill spend my hard earned money where its appreciated. I left 1 star because I had to. Its really a zero and Ill never go back.

The food is really good, and made to order. I had the fried chicken plate with Mac and Cheese and green beans. They didnt disappoint. The owner was really nice. They also have a bar. I had two black labels on the rocks, and I got them at a reasonable price. I will definitely be back.

Food presentation not appealing to the eyes. Just plain catfish n grits, with toast. Coffee machine broke. I actually walked outside to see where the nearest coffee place was. The person fixing the food was kind enough to say he didnt like the flour/cornmeal because its salty. He asked if i mind if he left to go get another one. I sat there for 10 min, One of the owners offered me a mimosa. The food was ok. The place & atmosphere were extremely pleasing.

My first impressions are not that great. When I walked in there was this overwhelming sense of lifelessness. Both the food and atmosphere looks dreary. Customer service was the most dry Ive ever experienced at any restaurant in Houston. But I remain optimistic since the true testament will be in the flavor of the food.... I tried the food. Not too bad but I would definitely say it is extremely over priced! I understand were in inflation and all but for $20 for soul food, food usually found at cheaper prices, I felt a bit cheated to be honest. I bought the roast, mashed potatoes, chilli beans. and Mac and cheese. Roast was cooked very well. Everything else I could make at home out of a can. Valveeta over some pasta. Honestly my mashed potatoes tasted better. Chilli beans were forgettable. Better customer service would have gotten it a better rating.

I came for dinner last night. The smothered chicken was amazing! The portion was huge. Green beans and mac n cheese were great. I came back this morning for brunch. The chicken and waffles was also good. Very big portion. The owner and staff are very personable. The jazz music playing in the background is at the perfect volume. You can carry on a conversation without shouting. Support local businesses. Give this place some love!

The food is nasty. I had the bake chicken, it was tuff and I had the cabbage, it was not seasoned. No flavor at all. I need to show them how to bake chicken, where it is tender and falling off the bone. Cabbage is the easiest vegetable to cook, instead of using water, use chicken broth. Yummy!

I had a fried chicken order to go, when I opened it at home, the chicken was in foil laying on top of the sides, and it was very greasy but when I ate part of the chicken, I noticed it was undercooked and still bloody! I also had 3 sides, mashed potatoes (they were INSTANT), mustard greens and black eyed peas. The mustard greens and black eyed peas were extremely salty and had so much pepper that I couldn t eat them either. The quality of the food and the taste was very disappointing. I expected much better for the price.

Took my mom here on live music Sunday and she really enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. It was our first time here. Shes a tough food critique being from Louisiana and we both loved the food. The wings were seasoned like my grandma used to. My mom loved the chicken fried steak n gravy.

My husband and I stop in from time to time. The atmosphere is quit pleasant. The food is great I love the fried chicken!!! I must say it s the best fried chicken I ve had sense relocating to the area. To me the Biggest delight to visiting the restaurant is that each time my husband and I visit the owner comes out to communicate with us. That s absolutely amazing that he takes the time to come and communicate with those in his establishment. Sad to say nothing to write home about. I went Friday after work the place was empty (2-3pm). The young lady that took my order wasnt friendly at all. Very dry and moody. I ordered the catfish, red/kidney bean & cabbage. The only thing that was good was the bean & rice! The cabbage was mushy and the fish was a wet kinda fry. I guess with the name I was expecting outstanding food. Very disappointed.

Big mamas had the potential to be a great experience. We got there on a Friday night there was absolutely no one in the restaurant at 7 o clock in the evening. We both ordered the chicken fried steak, mine with green beans annd fries, the wife got mac and cheese. It was as if they had given us a chicken fried steak out of the frozen food department at one of your local grocery stores and the green were salty with a lot of like slap your mama added. It was absolutely terrible. I will not be going back. The prices were expensive for both food and drink. Just overall bad experience at the end of the day

My first time visiting and I met 4 cousins there. I walked and it was a nice ambiance and a live saxophone player that was fantastic. The ordering was weird. The kitchen looked dark and empty but the menu was there. I browsed the menu while waiting. The prices are reasonable. I got 6 PC wings and tots (they were out of fries). Eventually someone popped up and took my order after 15 minutes. While waiting I went to the bar to get my drink. The short haired,heavy set bartender proceeded to walk out of the bar to record the performance. Me and another customer looked at each other and waited. Didnt want to upset the person making out drink. She eventually came back when she was finished and made our drinks. When she handed it to me she said Thank you? It was really loud near the bar so I said excuse me? She repeated thank you? I figured out she was telling me to say thank you!!! Um, really?! I was going to say it but she spoke first. I said thanks and walked away. Extremely rude bad customer service. I then didnt receive my drink so I went back to kitchen and had to fill cup with ice and bring it back for Kool aid. I waited about 10 minutes and the same bartender came over asking what did I need. I told her I bought the Kool aid. She proceeded to fill the cup halfway and walked off!!! The cashier/waitress came over and saw it and filled it up for me and said sorry about that. She was very friendly and answered my questions about cake flavors and the price. I only gave 2 stars for the nice waitress and the saxophone player. I will never return to this spot. The wings were super salty and the tots too hard.

Relaxed atmosphere. Ashley is so down to earth. ONeil has nice cold beer at the bar. The food is like home cooking. After a good meal and a cold one you want to relax. Try the delicious moist cakes fora take home treat. Trust me with their portions, you will need to take your dessert home.

The Soulfood there is fresh and hot. If you want fried foods there is a 12 to 14 minute wait. The food has Enough seasoning for my taste. Nice clean restaurant and they have a bar with mix drinks as well. On Fridays DJ or a live band! The parking lot is a bit tight, over all the prices are very reasonable! Decided to order this for dinner tonight. Usually it s pretty ok, but it was very disappointing. I had it delivered and that s never been an issue before. Someone had a heavy hand when Seasoning the food today, because those greens tasted like a half a pound of salt. Gave me a headache. The staff was friendly and the restaurant appeared clean. I had the fish and grits and a lemon drop, and a butter pecan cake. The fish was seasoned nicely. There was enough grits for at least two people but the tiny (1) piece of fish barely made through 4 bites for a price of 17.00. The lemon drop tasted like pure (bottom shelf alcohol). I was utterly disappointed with this $15 drink. The $5 butter pecan cake was tasty. Although this was a pricy meal, I m going to return for another experience. Hopefully, next time the food and the price match.

Me and my mother were visiting from out of town. We wanted some soul food so we decided to try this place, as it was close to where we were staying. Let me start by saying that the staff were unfriendly. We came on a Friday night, they had a live band playing.It was fairly empty when we walked in.We walked in and there was a woman sitting on a stool at the front door and she didn t speak. So we stopped and she rudely said $10 for the live entertainment. We informed her we are taking our stuff to go. When I went to order my food the lady seemed upset and she sent me to the cashier because fried fish is made to order. I became irritated when the cashier sent me back to the first Lady because I wanted sides from the buffet (in which I told the first Lady what I wanted before she sent me to the cashier). Overall, the food was horrible, the only thing good was the fish that was cooked fresh. The cabbage was watery and flavorless. The sweet potatoes were mushy and tasteless. My mother said her smothered pork chop was tough and nothing but bone. I also ordered a piece of vanilla cake and it was hard. I had to ask for plasticware. For the price you pay for that not so great food and the customer service we received, we won t go here again. I was very disappointed.

This place is legit! It reminded me of eating at my grandparents farm down in Florida in the early 80 s.. Collared Greens and black eyed peas are incredible as was the meatloaf! After a long ride from Angleton for a wonderful church service we decided to try this place my coworkers spoke about so highly of. I purchased two oxtails plates and it was HORRIBLE!!! Oxtails with pork chop gravy had entirely too much black pepper, rice overcooked and yams didn t have any seasoning. The red beans was the only thing I ate. Oh let s not forget the dry sweet cornbread. To top it off the owner of this fine establishment driving a black GMC parked illegally and had me blocked in and I had to go back inside twice to ask her to move her vehicle and she continued to talk. My experience here totally sucked and I definitely won t be going back.

I had the pleasure of getting dinner at Big Mama s on Tuesday night. I would love to show pictures but nothing was left when I was done but bones and empty containers. I was happily greeted by the owner who was able to tell me every menu item available. I ordered the Wings and devil Bites (battered and fried jalapeño peppers) The wings were perfect and they have a special dipping sauce that I could put on everything. I even ordered the Red Bean with Sausage and of course again, container was empty when I was done. I told the owner I will blame him if I gain all the weight I ve been going to the gym to keep off but it will be a pleasure. I already have my sights set on the Mac n Cheese and Banana Pudding my next visit. If you want some good food trust me Big Mama s is the place to be

Wanted to support the business and have been twice to give it a fair shot. When you get the fried food they make your sides early and then they turn out cold. At least once a week I visit Big Mamas Kitchen.I enjoy the hot cornmeal catfish and shrimp,and golden fried chicken wings with that special sauce,the pound cake is very delicious also the butter pecan cake. Went there for a college celebration brunch. We arrived at 1130 and they were not ready for us. Once the food was brought out I ordered the ox tail plate and fried chicken plate. First thing our food was cold and the macaroni was too spicy. Food does not have to be spicy to be good. To add insult to injury my party got some dessert. The cake was Ok but the banana pudding and peach cobbler was so bad we threw it in the trash. I spent $61 dollars and had to eat somewhere else. Maybe your experience will be better but mine was horrible.

I really wanted to enjoy this establishment as I m all about supporting small local businesses however I was left underwhelmed and a little grossed out. The food in the buffet section looked cold and gross as if had been sitting out for a while. I ordered the fried chicken and mashed potatoes with gravy and decided to try their Mac n cheese. A very long 45 minutes later, my food came out. They gave my extra mashed potatoes which were very cold and forgot my gravy, with a very mushy and cold side of Mac n cheese that tasted watered down. Chicken was OK. There was no sweet tea in the container and they were also out of their aguas frescas. The cherry on top was one of their chocolate cakes had mold growing on the cake itself. I would not come back here again.

My son chose to go to Big Mammas for a celebratory lunch for getting his drivers permit. He remembered the food truck and wanted to try to store front. He said the food was phenomenal. He had fried shrimp and tater tots and fried chicken wings and fries. I tried everything except the shrimp (Im allergic) and I agree that it was great. However, I only gave food 4 stars because the tater tots werent fried hard enough and needed seasoning. The fried chicken was seasoned perfectly and fell off the bone!!. The service was pleasant and efficient, The venue was well decorated, clean, and easy to access. Were looking forward to going back for dinner.

We came in because we had plans to visit as soon as we got into town. Let me tell you that it was an AMAZING TIME!!! It all stared with Jordan our server who did a great job explaining the menu & then making sure we were taken care of. We have eaten here 6 times. It would be more if we did didn t live an hour away. Some of our family s favorites are the fried chicken, smothered chicken, red beans and rice, and a double burger with bacon and shrimp. The homemade cakes are moist and delicious. The green beans are the best I have ever had. We love each staff member we have met because they are friendly and treat us like family. I highly recommend this place for a delicious, hearty meal. Prices were on point for the food in my opinion due to the quality and generous portions.

My sweetie and I stopped in for lunch today. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful, great color choices, I understand they have work from local artists for sale (love when businesses support others too), so there were a few open spaces on the wall. A very nice young man took our order, explained what was already prepared. We both chose cook 2 order, I chose the fried chicken, he chose the wings. Now the disclaimer, this is cooked when you order it. It takes a bit of time. We decided to try the green beans, yams, cabbage and macaroni and cheese. The chicken was delicious! Still moist and tender. The yams were outstanding, perfect spices, not too sweet. The cabbage was delicious, although there was one piece that was too tough to eat. The green beans were really good, a little peppery, but I was not disappointed. The macaroni and cheese was the only disappointing thing for me. Pasta was over cooked and there was plenty of cheese, just no seasoning. No bread came with our food, nor were we offered any. We also got a piece of lemon cake which we could not eat there. We ate it after we got home. It was light, fresh and delicious! Not too much lemon, and not overly sweet. We are looking forward to going back to try their brunch menu.

Tried this place for the first time today. Was in the area and looking for a place with home style meals. Was not disappointed. They were almost empty but probably that time of day between lunch and supper crowds. Everyone was very friendly, the place was clean and comfortable, and the music on the speakers was good blues. The food was great. Its a little like a cafeteria where you walk up and pick between options and they put all the dishes on a tray. I had smothered chicken and my wife had baked chicken. Both tasted great and were fall off the bone tender with the color of something that could have been slow smoked. The choice of vegitables were great and we got 4 different ones between us since you get two each, and all were excellent. The sweet potatoes were like thanksgiving. There was plenty to choose from and it all looked good but will have to try something different next time to see how good that is. Will definitely go back to this place. I gave 5 stars for service, because they were very nice and friendly, and explained the process and choices to us as if we were friends. But there really isnt much typical service things at a place like this since there isnt someone coming to your table to ask what you want to order and then bringing it to you. But even if they were busy, and the place was loud and you couldnt hear the music, Im sure the food would still be great.

I ordered the fried chicken wings and they were fried to crispy perfection. Im sorry I didnt give this place a chance earlier. I have ordered delivery and have eaten in as well, the fried chicken was delish on both occasions. This spot is very roomy and nicely furnished, etc. If you havent guessed it by my comments, this place is definitely on my regular rotation list. Walked in, it s dinner time and the place is empty and three employees and not one said hello. I didn t notice any of them since the opening maya be new staff who knows? But I stood at the counter for a good minute and not one hello. Funny thing is there was a young guy fixing a plate right in front of me and he didn t look up at me once. I then asked Are you open? on March 6, i ordered oxtail food to go from this place with a bill of 30 something dollars. I called them back same day i ordered food to complain that the meat was tough and it needed to be cooked more so other people ordering the food will enjoy the food better. on March 8, i found out they charged my CC bank twice of 30 something dollars. i called CC back to complain and that was taken care of. I really dont know if they did that on purpose cuz i told them the meat was tough or it was a mistake on their part. normally in any business, they reconcile and tabulate the receipts at the end of the day and people who does this job should know if there are any discrepancies. two reasons i wont go back to this place: food oxtail not cooked well and i dont want to pay twice for ordered food.

I had the smothered baked chicken with gravy, rice, small white beans and yams. My chicken was not done it was pink on the inside, some of my beans were hard my yams were not sweet enough and the gravy was too salty. I also got a slice of lemon cake which did not taste fresh in fact I ended up throwing it away. There were no to go cups and all for $27.00 and some change. The food is over priced and I was not pleased at all. I know southern home soul food and this was not to my liking at all. #disappointed

Very disappointed, I don t know where to start. My first instinct when I walked in and the place was completely empty was to go back out. But I decided to give them a chance. BIG mistake! My husband had the oxtail plate and for $26 he was given 4 small oxtails his green bean could not be eaten because they were so salty and so were the mustard greens. And the oxtails didn t have its own gravy he was given some gravy off the smothered chicken. I had smothered pork chops green beans and mustard greens. I had to as for another pork chop because the piece(yes piece) was mostly a bone. And the rice was over over cooked. What chef/cook don t taste the food? And there was no way the person cooking the food could look at the rice and see that and have it served anyway. And the cornbread was basically corn cake, to much sugar. So inspite of the good customer service I will not go back or recommend this place to anyone. The food was quality and taste did not match the overprice. Come on my people, we ve got to do better.

So I got the turkey wing, cornbread dressing, greens, green beans, and sweet cherry KoolAjd It was all super delish and they serve large portions. They have daily specials, weekend brunch, and an event Mar 3 with a live band /poetry reading starting at 7p. They will also feature BBQ and seafood menu. We were sadly disappointed with the breakfast we had. This was our first and last time trying this place. Great ambience, but they truly need to hire a professional chef. Nothing (not one thing) was homemade. Certainly not the waffles. The French toast was burnt and made out of Wonder Bread (seemingly). The bacon was way too hard. The eggs were spoiled!!! And the chicken was not good, with feathers. I hate that I have to leave this review. I want to support our black own businesses, but we can t expect people to just be ok with subpar food. Tried to support this black business, can t do it. $27 for a to go baked chicken dinner with only two pieces of chicken. I said ok let s give them another shot. 1/22/2023 took my family to brunch. Door said 9am open, got their around 10:15 am. They took our order $125.00 and some change including tip. 3 people. Sat down, no place setting, no drinks, and no conversation from anyone else. Waited about 15 to 20 minutes, no food, no drinks, no service, no forks, and no explanation. Kindly went and got my money back and went to Lupe tortilla. We placed 2 orders for pick up: 1. Salmon & cabbage: they were out of both. 2. Shrimp basket: shrimp were small, overcooked and not seasoned at all. The onion rings were decent. My daughter got Fried Mozzarella Sticks instead of the salmon. They did not have marinara sauce to go with it. They did not explain if they were out or just dont offer it. The site says the owner is from Louisiana and has operated a restaurant there for 20+ years. Honestly, given that my family is from Louisiana and are EXCELLENT cooks...I am embarrassed that the site says that. I always want my people (Black people) to do well and I want to support them, but this was an awful experience. We will not be going back.
