Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern

About the Company

rating: 4.6

The Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern is a former drinking water reservoir built in 1926 for the City of Houston. Recognizing the historical and architectural significance of the highly unusual space, Buffalo Bayou Partnership with the City of Houston worked to take over development and maintenance of the space. BBP restored and repurposed the Cistern into a magnificent public space to house an ambitious program of changing art installations.

Carlos Cruz-Diez (1923-2019) at the Houston Cistern: Spatial Chromointerference (May 12, 2018 to April 7, 2019) was underground, ephemeral, and participatory work integrated into the architecture of the Cistern. 32 projectors were placed in the Cistern to project moving lattices of light on the columns, interior walls. Always purchase tickets online. A must see for every visitor to Houston. You won t regret it.

Small gem. Amazing experience. Simple tour of the old Cistern, architecturally interesting and we had a very good guide. In the end he demonstrated the good acoustics by performing a song, resulting in instant goose bumps. Perhaps a little pricey as it literally takes 30 mins. But worthwhile anyway.

Super disappointed. Could be great with minor tweaks. I agree that the staff is rude, very rude. The description of what you are actually paying for needs to be way more clear. We had no idea it was a guided tour and that we had to show up exactly on time, we were 5 minutes late. It does say it in the confirmation email but who reads those? If the description of what they are selling was clearly stated ahead of time, we would have planned accordingly and had a much better experience. And the staff really need to understand that while the Cistern is wonderful, it s not the Sistine Chapel.

We were looking for unique experiences during our visit to Houston and the cistern did not disappoint. Modern art is usually not our favorite, but the way that the light installation HaHaReal by Rachel Rossin transformed the underground installation was surprisingly fascinating and we enjoyed our tour. The tour started right on time, and our guide gave us a short overview of the history of the cistern before walking us through the art installation, so it was like receiving two tours in one. Its a nice cool spot on a hot and humid day. I would recommend booking tickets in advance, which is easy to do on line and going early in the morning, since the designated parking lot is really small and fills up quickly. While its dark, there are no jump scares.

This is an interesting installation, I would have loved to had time to see it and soak it in but we were rushed through at pace by a guy in huge illuminous earrings who was very rude. We had a question but were told no questions allowed. Some people arrived late and missed the safety briefing and that was fine apparently but to try and spend time watching the installation and show interest was not allowed. Im not sure what was going on with this guy whether he needs support or training or just had a very bad day, but tainted the whole exhibit sadly. The guy at the front of the group was very good. Such a shame.

Mesmerizing Experience Beneath the City: Buffalo Bayou Cistern Singing Bowl Performance Having finally experienced the singing bowl performance at the Buffalo Bayou Cistern, I can confidently say it was well worth the wait and comes highly recommended. The Cistern, formerly the citys water supply until 2007, now stands as a captivating landmark open to the public since 2016. The echoes and sounds within its 212 columns create an unforgettable experience. The water levels, ranging from ankle to knee deep, add to the unique atmosphere. With various shows, including light displays, sound performances, and standard tours, the Buffalo Bayou Cistern promises an immersive journey beneath the city that shouldnt be missed.

Great piece of local history that has been preserved now with a proper plan and access for visitors. From 1920s and original the water supply for parts of Houston you can now visit and view the cistern which offers some great views in the sympathetically lit chamber along with amazing sound qualities. There is not much walking needed to enter the cistern and you can finally walk around the edge of the cistern as part of the tour. Your hide may also sing for you to again show-off the azing echo and sound qualities. Parking can be a bit tricky Im guessing, there is a fairly small carpark near the cistern with 3 hour stay limit but it does advise there is parking around the corner.

It s history and importance to the City Of Houston and it s development as one of the nations largest city, is due to the development of what used to be the water reserve. Today it stands as a beautiful structure that captures the imagination. We were grateful to have received a tour from one of the biggest advocates of the Cistern. Make sure to schedule your appointment as they only let a handful of people in at a time. I m looking forward to the video we re creating about our tour on Houston City Beat - online.

Very neat place. About a .25 mile walk around the drained cavern. Learned it was due to multiple fissure cracks they were unable to co tonie upkeep and in operation. Was not there for an art installation but would be VERY neat. The light refraction is mind playing. Visited on

A must-see in Houston. An underground water storage built over a hundred years ago that is not open for tours. Above, there is a park with a state area and an overlook to Sabine Street and the skate park. Also, you can get to it from the Buffalo Bayou trail system, which I frequently stop off while cycling through.

Fascinating! Happy to see this unique public attraction at Buffalo Bayou Park. Our tour guide informed us that the city originally planned to demolish the cistern after it was removed from service so they could install a parking garage. Extremely happy that those original plans were canceled in favor of preserving a unique piece of our citys history.

Went to Cistern Illuminated with the Choral Group there singing. Lights, sounds, facility, all was awesome. Been wanting to see this place for awhile. My girls loved it too.

We visited this beautiful space for the first time yesterday. The illuminated experience is something to see. You are given twenty-five minutes to walk around and take in the wonder of it all. The only thing that put a damper on things is the end. A tour guide sidled up and said it was time to leave. We wanted to ask a question and she said we could, but as we walked out. She firmly asked us to walk out. And then proceeded to slowly escort someone else out as they discussed the cistern.

Beautiful space, the colored lights are from the holidays. The space is meant to be enjoyed quietly so small children may not appreciate the atmosphere. We will be back.

This park is a beautiful place for engagment sessions and family portraits! As a photographer, this is one of my go-to spots for both! Especially in the fall, the trees change colors and the lighting is wonderful. I highly recommend it!
