Ferris Wheelers Backyard and BBQ

About the Company

rating: 4.6

Ferris Wheelers Backyard & BBQ is a barbecue joint in the popping-hot Dallas Design District. This hot-spot is serving up more than smoked meats and booze with an outdoor space, known as the Backyard, which features a huge patio and stage for live music, along with games like Jenga and washers. Oh, and we can't forget the 50-foot, operational Ferris wheel that looks over the Dallas skyline! Texas brisket as a major player on the menu, but you'll also find less-common proteins, such as honey-smoked turkey breast and Carolina-style pulled pork. Order up a half-pound on a plate or enjoy all of the meats piled together into a hearty sandwich. Texas Monthly just named it one of the Top 10 New & Notable Places to Get BBQ in Texas!

I was so excited to see my favorite band at a small intimate venue. I had never been here before. Got food while I waited in line for 4.5 hours. Food ended up being too spicy for me to eat and i threw most of it away after trying to save it with a ton of ranch, couldnt stomach the spice. The service I experienced was friendly and fast. Getting into the venue for the show, we discovered the table option online was actually a VIP thing which hadnt been properly explained at time of purchasing tickets. They had a whole barricade infront of GA, which felt unfair because that hadnt been disclosed. Im so sad because if I had known that was the situation I wouldve opted for that ticket option. I felt cheated that I had waited for so long to just be put behind people who hadnt been waiting all day for a spot. No one at the venue knew if there was a vip option ahead of time and there was very bad communication. Its an outdoor venue, dirt floors and the ferris wheel itself is not functional. Im so extremely disappointed in this venue and dont recommend seeing a show here unless you decide you want a table I guess.

Security was helpful (for the most part) and did their job well. Largest complaint is the concert venue. Nowhere on the website did they advertise VIP the only choices were GA or Tables. Upon entering the venue (after queuing for 4.5 hours in the hot sun) we discover that the tables are indeed VIP and got an entire section of barrier space IN FRONT of GA. This is unacceptable and an insult to fans of bands who are willing to spend their time of day waiting to be front row and get a good view of the band they are to see. It was infuriating to have our view blocked by people who paid to be there and were simply standing there for the whole show, seemingly not enjoying themselves. To add on top of it, security will not let SEALED WATER BOTTLES YOU PURCHASE IN THE VENUE outside. I paid $5 for a bottle of water and was forced to chug the entire thing so i could leave the venue and sit with my friends outside. Horrible experience, will not be returning even if its the only place my favorite band is playing. Picture attached is how far GA was from the stage.

This is, I think, the worst bbq experience I have had in Texas. My brisket was so old and dry that it had this strange white marking on it. I paid $5 extra to get the ribs in the w meat combo, and the ribs werent cooked enough. They were technically at the tender point, but there was no additional love in the smoke. It had no bark action. Mac and cheese was alright. Fried okra was crispy, but I def will not be trying again.

Ferris Wheelers Backyard is an absolutely charming spot! The atmosphere is extremely cute, making it a perfect setting for a date night or a fun outing with friends. The service is fantastic our server was friendly and attentive, making sure we had everything we needed. The food is delicious, with a great selection that caters to various tastes. Although the parking lot is a bit smaller, it s worth the effort to find a spot. I also love that they host live music nights, adding to the vibrant ambiance. Overall, Ferris Wheelers Backyard is a must-visit for a great time with good food and company!

One of the cheapest places in Dallas, and it definitely delivered on flavor. I ordered the two-meat dish with brisket and turkey, but they were out of turkey, so I stuck with brisket alone. While some parts were a bit dry, the taste was still fantastic. The brisket BBQ sandwich was also a highlight, packed with flavor. The sauces served with the meat were delicious, enhancing the overall experience. The cole slaw was just right for my taste, crunchy and refreshing, and the waffle fries were perfectly seasoned. Despite the slight dryness of the brisket, the rich flavors and unbeatable prices made it worthwhile. The staff was incredibly friendly, adding to the welcoming atmosphere. If youre looking for great food on a budget, this spot is definitely worth a visit.

I heard this place was good on social media but unfortunately this place was sub par. The service was decent, the employees were nice, however, the cashiers didnt seem to fully understand how to work the cash register which elongated time spent at the register. The food was ok, really. I ordered The Day Off burger. It was mediocre. The side that came along with it--their BBQ mac-n-cheese--was cold when my order was ready & I dont understand why they call it BBQ mac-n-cheese if all they do is hardly sprinkle (what seems to be) little crumbs of BBQ Lays over. Most of all, I ordered a peach cobbler to-go after I was done with my meal & it was terrible. The peaches tasted like the canned ones, the vanilla ice cream tasted cheap, & the cobbler topping was truly gross. It did not taste good. Overall, I really would never recommend this place to anyone. I encourage you, the reader, to look elsewhere for a good local restaurant.

I love fat on my meat. And I love my meat moist. (It was in point. ) I like spicy. They have multiple BBQ sauce. (Again on point ) The Mac and cheese was good crazy good. (Again in point ) The fried Okra was as expected. The only item that could have been better was the coleslaw. To me lacked flavor. And the beans, if you like them a smidgen sweet (then their on point. But if you dont like any form of sweetness to your beans, then they still might fit you. I dont really want sweetness in my beans, but they were still good. Overall.... If Im ever in Dallas.... Id go back.

We were just served our food. We did not get what we requested (half the order was incorrect), but hey, we like nearly all meets and sides, so what the heck.... unfortunately, the brisket tasted and looked weeks old. Beans were absolutely terrible, mac and cheese also tasted and looked old. Sausage was ok. The ribs were the only thing, even remotely decent. This is not good BBQ. You can get better from the frozen section at your local grocery store. I would give the food less than 1 star if I could. The staff was nice and the place is decent for what it is. Im sure its fun for live bands, but we waisted $70 in food as it all ended up in the trash. No, we did not ask for money back or to try other food. Its all precooked. Its just not the standard anyone should ever hope to eat. Good luck if you eat here, I suggest doing so on a full stomach or maybe during a live event when they care more about what they feed you. **Edit** Added an image of the brisket. This is exactly how it arrived just minutes ago. For reference, we are across the street at a hotel, and we picked up the food.

With a few changes, this would be easily one of the best places in Dallas.

I stay at the Hilton across the street every other week and have always went to rodeo goat for food because the service is always stellar and food never disappoints, but I was craving some bbq so went to Ferris for the first time. Walk up to the counter and and told to take a seat and I ll be helped. After 5-7 minutes a server took my drink and food order. About 7 minutes go by and my food comes out. The fries are warm and crispy, but the turkey and brisket were cold. Not even as if they were under a heat lamp, they were just cold. Another 5+ minutes and still no beer so I go to the counter and they said they re out of the beer I ordered, so I order a different one and it shows up over 5 minutes later. The spicy bbq is great and has a good kick. Overall, disappointing and if I go back it ll be to just get a drink in the back patio area.

Never go here for a show. They oversell and youll hear the show you paid to see start while youre in your third hour in line. The Dennys down the street had to shut down because people trying to get into Ferris Wheelers were fainting and vomiting due to heat exhaustion. Two ambulances had to come and pick up people because the venue was so over packed and unsafe. Wheelchair customers were forced into the smoking section by the outdoor bar to watch the show on cheap LCD TV screens, despite their advertised Disability-Section. VIP cusomers had their benches, tables, and chairs removed to make more room for standing room, due to overselling. They had one security person, and blamed the amount of people who arrived in refund emails than acknowledge that they oversold. Do not trust this business.

**Updated 5/21** On our way through Dallas to San Antonio we stopped at our former favorite Dallas BBQ spot. This time we were accompanied by our little one. I ordered the two meat plate which came with my choices: brisket and smoked turkey. There wasnt a kids menu and the restaurant didnt appear to be geared towards children at all. There were no high chairs available for use nor a kids menu to choose from. We were a little disappointed to see this as we had enjoyed BBQ here previously. I was also saddened to see that the brisket was more dry than in previous visits, but the turkey was a smash hit for my little one whom I fed off of my plate. Both my wife and I remembered a delicious potato salad, but the one we received left us wondering what had changed as neither one of us wanted to finish it. Overall I dont know if we will be back, as we quickly found a replacement. Only time will tell. Original: The backyard/patio was our favorite area! Friendly staff and delicious food added to a great experience overall. Price is fair for the amount you receive. (It may not be KC bbq but its delicious!)

This place still serves pretty decent brisket & other Texas BBQ options, so it is still worthwhile your trip. The brisket was tender but it had some random spots where it tasted more salty (maybe the seasoning wasnt evenly spread?) & the beans were a tad too hot/chilly.

Good Bbq sauce here. Wagon wheel pasta and cheese sauce isnt it though. Was recommended as one of better side dishes. Was advised against the potato salad by staff. The fried okra was overfried, hard and crunchy. Brisket (sliced) was super salty and the meat wasnt poorly cooked and would have been better without the extra seasoning. The best items were the fountain drink selections. Excellent drinks that compliment bbq exquisitely. Sweet tea would have been great too likely but the pounds of sugar hadnt been added to the sweet tea containers until the staff was notified. No central air conditioning at the time and the room cooling units didnt have the needed capacity for the space. Tables and benches were sticky as well. Sauce was great.

Went here for a quick bit to eat before heading to the airport. The BBQ meat was really good, but the sides were not very good. They have a huge outdoor seating area. Would be perfect for large parties. They have a bar out back as well. They have corn hole! Seating is limited inside but still a good amount. They have a stage, so I imagine they have live bands some nights. The service was excellent and quick!

The barbecue brisket, ribs, nor the sausage did not have a wood smoke flavor. I thought that the fried pickles would have been pickle chips, instead that were Chop pickles with a batter on them.

Wow - this place was a great find considering I only came here because I was in the area with my parents. Their happy hour cocktails are delicious and only $5 (Ma and Pas Lemonade was phenomenal). I had the ribs with elotes, mac and cheese, with a bread pudding dessert. Absolutely A++ outstanding BBQ and my party of 4 felt the same. The backyard is a very unique and interesting atmosphere to dine in. Will definitely be back.

Would recommend you stop and try this place out!

Looked and tasted like it was made 3 weeks ago. Mac and cheese was bland. Banana pudding was runny and definitely instant pudding. The brisket was okay. The sausage was mids AF. 0/10 would not recommend.

As a concert venue, this is hands down the worst venue Ive been to. Absolutely no parking spaces at all, and they oversell tickets so you have to choose between being packed in like a sardine with no space to move, or stand on a platform thats 3 feet below where the stage is and GA standing, so you cant see anything at all (outside of other peoples legs). Will avoid this place at all costs going forward. I also got some food while I was here, extremely mediocre and definitely not worth the price. We left early because we couldnt see anything at all.

TL;DR - As a concert venue, ruined my experience. Came here for a concert. Security confiscated a knife Id accidentally left in my pocket (its small and lightweight). They had given me the impression I could return to collect it after the show, but evidently not all security was on the same page because one guard had to find the security manager to figure out where the bucket of confiscated items went. The manager eventually came by and told the guard that they throw out those items, WHICH IS FAIR, except I couldve been TOLD that and left it in my car. Instead Ive effectively had my knife stolen from me. I wasnt even the only person stolen from. There were quite a few pepper sprays alongside my knife that had been confiscated. It didnt help that the manager was particularly rude right out the gate without me having said a word to her. Additionally, theyd invited a group that was fairly popular and so the actual crowd area was pretty stuffed and the overflow space was down a set of stairs so anyone stuck in the back just could not hope to see a thing. Venue was fine enough as is, just sold too many tickets. These are simple fixes. Do better.

I got the spare ribs, bbq mac and cheese, campfire beans, and their draft beer. The beans have tons of flavor, a bit on the spicy side. While I appreciate the ferris wheel pasta shape on the mac, the flavor was bland and disappointing. The smoked ribs were delicious and tender. You get about 4 ribs but after 2 I was full. The hot BBQ sauce is genius. An even balance of hot sauce and BBQ sauce at the same time. The fried okra was good too. The backyard patio is definitely a highlight and the servers are wonderful.

And shoutout to Dallas for going above and beyond to help us make sure our order was perfectly separated.

I really want to give 5 stars but I cannot. Accessible in the store and in backyard. Love the back. Great place to eat out. Now the food. Brisket is top notch some of the best you will eat. Love the au jus, just like the shredded pork. That is what makes these so moist. The sausage is good as well, so hands down 3 of 5 staples in BBQ. The ribs I had added for +$5 to the double meat meal. I would have expected better than the last 3 cartilage cuts of your spare ribs. The first was dry, meat was jerky. The second I could find some meat between cartilage but not great. The third was 2 small bones, almost a rib. Hence the 3 stars. You took a fast food BBQ approach. This is not a pitmasters quality nor respect for BBQ.

My favorite BBQ in Dallas! Although I always get the Brisket Stuffed Baked Potato, their proportions are generous, the meat is tasty & lean, the sauce is sweet (spicy is available), and the potato is huge. On top of that, is the friendliest staff and the quickest service (table service at a BBQ!? ) Thanks, Ferris, for making me feel at home... but better!!

The outside venue was fun and inviting. The inside was spacious and open. Vegetarian options: Try the vegan Beef. It tastes just like beef and is way healthier than any plant based beef you might eat. Im fairly certain it was made from grass, maybe finished with corn. Not sure to be honest.
