Canyon Lake Gorge

About the Company

rating: 4.7

During one week in the summer of 2002, more than 34 inches of rain fell in the upper watershed of the Guadalupe River, setting off a torrent of floodwater that carved a perfectly fascinating geological wonder – the Canyon Lake Gorge – out of the earth. The flood roared through the Hill Country northwest of New Braunfels, tearing away soil, ripping up huge trees, crumpling houses and sending a rush of water from swollen Canyon Lake over its spillway for the first time since the reservoir was completed in 1964. The historic flood sliced open the ground below the spillway, creating a gigantic 64-acre Gorge and exposing ancient, cretaceous limestone, fossils and even dinosaur footprints 110 million years old.

We embarked on the 90-minute guided adult walk through Gorge history a journey that was both enlightening and scenic. Our GBRA guide was top-notch with hilarious dad jokes. Back up to GBRA guide was a Texas Master Naturalist docent bringing up the rear, ensuring we didnt wander off to join the local wildlife permanently. For more details, hop onto their website (not literally, unless youre into extreme browsing). They keep the group cozy, maxing out at 10 people perfect for making friends or plotting your escape plan in case Bigfoot shows up. Oh, and we were bussed to the trails peak, about 1.5 miles up, so our hike started on a high note (literally and figuratively). Fees: 90 min tour for $15 Toilets: At the start of the trail public restrooms and mid way by GBRA. Very clean and with water.

Glad to have had Joe from Guadalupe Blanco River Authority giving my sorority sisters and I a 90 min tour of the Canyon Gorge this past Saturday. The walk was easy- moderate with uneven ground of limestone, rocks, steps . Plenty of water stops, easy going pace and VERY interesting! 111 million years old sea fossils, dinosaur footprints, fascinating geologic features also explained to us in comedic manner- enjoyable. Volunteer Bryan came along to explain plants seen. Fun and safe and informative and BEAUTIFUL! I had seen this gorge freshly made by the force of water in 2002 Spillway event and painted this painting afterward. Looking forward to painting how it looks now!

Great place for families & people of all ages. The self-guided tour allows you to go at your own speed while still learning via the educational signs along the trail & and at the outlook areas. For others wanting an even deeper educational & more thorough experience, I highly recommend going on a guided tour. The guides provide more information & youre able to hike in the gorge to see everything up close including actual dinosaur tracks! And yoga fans can sign-up for Yoga in the Gorg if they want a unique opportunity. Regardless of which trail experience you choose, its a great opportunity that should not be missed! Toilets: There are several restrooms, including two that are accessible to guided tour participants during the tour.

A hidden gem near Canyon Lake that is not talked about a lot but should be! Beautiful area with unexpected points of interests such as dinosaur tracks and hidden waterfalls. Recommend the guided tour: John was our guide, was as informative as he was entertaining, and was willing and able to answer every question a person could throw at him about the Canyon Lake area. John has a vast amount of knowledge of everything from the history of the Canyon Lake Dam all the way to the tiny rocks (or fossils one might mistake for rocks) sitting on the gorge floor. Definitely check it out if you re in the area.

we did the 1.5 hour tour today with Joe... WOW what an experience! Theres so much to learn and take in! Geology, Dinosaurs, the history of the area 100+ million years ago, how a major flood in 2002 changed the area forever and the DRAMATIC impact it had! Theres fossils to see and discover. Then theres Joe! You can tell he really enjoys his job. Hes funny.. or should I say Punny! Hes just a pleasure. He was a huge part of what made this tour great! The whole staff here was nice too. The 1.5 hrs literally flies by! make sure to wear comfortable shoes preferably that are for hiking /trekking, bring a water jug thats insulated and keeps your drinks cool. At the front office they have a water refill station that dispenses cool water and its purified and free! Along with some nice clean little bathrooms. We are coming back in the fall and with family! Thank you again Joe and for everyone one there for making this such a great experience!

The 3 hour tour was amazing. There is just too much to write about other than to say that a visit to do the scenic or guided tour is well worth it. We also stopped at Wild Flower cafe after, which was a great stop and made for a complete day trip from Austn while we are on vacation. The 3 hr tour: I am not in the best shape but could do the tour and glad I did. There are rock stairs and also rocks that are trying to be stairs but both had sure footing but tricky navigation at times. There are some deep step downs and up but I used my hands and got a bit of help from my wife. A walking stick or poles could be very helpful. I can see why they have the warning about bad knees and they should for sure but at the same time....if you are mobile and know that you can handle some tricky terrain and your knees can handle a bit of a challenge...then you may be ok.....tough to say but I hope this helps...

You can t throw your ball in the water for your dog to swim out and fetch without the cops giving you court because your dog wasn t on a leash. Excellent, well-marked hike; fun for the whole family! HIKE: We did the self-guided hike since we had a child under 7 with us, this review is for that portion. (There are other guided hikes that are more strenuous that are available.) This one mile both ways out-and-back hike was about 30% shaded in the summer. It was hot but had lots of photo op areas and stopping points with benches and picnic tables. It was the best labeled trail I have ever hiked, with yellow markers about 100 yards or so. You absolutely wont get lost! Trail is well maintained- some with natural cedar mulch or gravel, with some slipping hazards if you arent watching your steps. (This is not a wheelchair friendly hike.) KIDS: Our 6 and 8 year old enjoyed the hike, did not fall or complain about the length of the hike. (Make sure to ask for the adventure kit/backpacks to borrow from the visitors center! They have binoculars, a compass, and a scavenger hunt to help kids have something to do!) BATHROOMS: fancier port-a-potties at the visitor center, AND a bathroom at the end of the trail in case you need it before returning! That is a nice luxury you dont see on most trails. STAFF was all helpful and knowledgeable, and they showed us fossils found around the area and made sure we were hiking safely. Fees: Hike was $5/adult and kids were free for the open trail, not for the guided trail hike (which was an additional fee) Toilets: Fancy port-a-potty with locking doors and running water to wash hands. Not air conditioned but very clean.

I recently took my kids on a hike at Canyon Lake Gorge, and we had an absolutely fantastic time! This hidden gem is perfect for a family outing, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a short and sweet adventure. First and foremost, make sure to bring plenty of water, especially if youre hiking during the summer months. The Texas heat can be intense, but with water in hand, youll be well-prepared to enjoy the trail to its fullest. What made our experience even more memorable was the scavenger hunt they had set up for the kids. It added an extra element of excitement and engagement, keeping their spirits high throughout the hike. They had a blast searching for clues and discovering hidden treasures along the way. The price of admission was more than reasonable, with a cost of just $5 for anyone aged 12 and older. Considering the quality of the experience and the efforts put into maintaining the trail, its an absolute steal. The trail itself is awe-inspiring, with breathtaking views of the gorge and surrounding natural beauty. The geological formations are truly a sight to behold, and the educational signs along the path provide valuable insights into the areas history. The staff and guides at Canyon Lake Gorge were friendly, knowledgeable, and went out of their way to ensure that our visit was enjoyable. They were more than happy to answer our questions and share fascinating facts about the gorge and its ecosystem. If youre looking for an adventure that combines fun, education, and natural beauty, Canyon Lake Gorge is the place to be. Its an incredible experience for both kids and adults, and I cant recommend it enough. Make sure to add it to your familys must-visit list! So, grab your hiking gear, bring plenty of water, and get ready for an unforgettable journey through Canyon Lake Gorge. You wont be disappointed! Fees: $5 for any 12 and up Toilets: very clean and air conditioned.

I stopped by the gorge while on the way to the lake. Note that there is no lake access from the gorge, but overlook park is just a 4 min drive away. I also did not have the chance to go on any of the tours. I think they would have been really cool. But I thought the gorge itself was pretty cool and I enjoyed the hike along the gorge. Its a pretty short hike, although theres no loop. You hike through 8 clearly mark points of interest and then you hike back. And I would be remiss if I didnt say that this place has amazing bathrooms. I went to visit overlook park and canyon lake dam after my hike here, and then I came back just to use the bathrooms. Parking: Unless this place is getting a huge number of visitors on that day, parking should be no issue. Fees: $5 entry fee and then additional fees if you go on a tour. Toilets: This place has amazing bathrooms. I went to visit overlook park and canyon lake dam after my hike here, and then I came back just to use the bathrooms.

Took the 3 hour, 1.25 mile tour down the length of the gorge. Our guide, Joe, was very knowledgeable and personable. He gave us a great geological talk on how the gorge was formed and showed us fossils, rock formations, and even some dinosaur tracks exposed when the top layers of limestone were sheered off by the incredible force of water and the debris brought along with it. There is a 90 minute tour that covered the same ground but, for me, would have been too rushed. Quite a bit of uneven ground and steps and loose gravel along with a bit of an upward sloping section at the end would be challenging for some. Good news is they have a nice easy trail you can take to see the gorge without going down into it. Well worth it!

One of the nicest place in Texas. It is next to the canyon lake. Although, many visitor will have water activity in mind when they would be heading this way but it worth every penny. However, in order to get inside the canyon gorge, you have to plan and book way in advance. Only the guided tours are allowed and that may be a bit overpriced! We took the regular hiking trip. The staffs are knowledgeable but you want to download map beforehand as they donot offer printed maps.

What a hidden gem! An hour southwest of Austin is this amazing day trip. We took the 3 hour guided tour and it was a great use of a day. The Canyon Lake Gorge was formed after the 2002 devastating floods. In 3 days those floods uncovered fossils, unique rock formations, and carved a gorge 45 feet deep. Something that would usually take millenia. Our tour guide was Joe and he was a delight. He was knowledgeable, fun and obviously loves his job and this very special place. Definitely make time to go. Also, wear good shoes and bring water. All you geologists, this is a must.

Paid $5 per person for a 1 1/4 mile hike. Cool views of the gorge but similar views are free in many, many locations throughout the country. Our main focus was to see the dinosaur tracks. Cant see the tracks without taking a 3 hour tour. Please note there is also a 90 minute tour - dont know if that tour includes viewing the dinosaur tracks.

Great tour with guide Mike Antonio. Dino tracks, fossils, and history. Three hour tour just like Gililigans. Except you wont be left on an island with the professor and Mary Ann. Highly recommended.

Absolutely fantastic! Did the 3 hour tour and it was just right. Gorgeous, cool day. I could imagine the afternoon in the summer would be quite hot as you are in a gorge in the sun. John was our guide and he was very friendly and interesting.

This place is pretty and interesting, but the River Authority makes you take the guided tour to go down into the gorge (which is a very small gorge anyways). The front desk lady had a weird chip on the shoulder attitude. Also no veteran or senior discounts for basically a 20min walk up and back. They said it was a mile up and a mile back but was probably closer to 1/2mile up and 1/2mile back. I think tourists that dont hike much or people with small kids might enjoy it because its a very easy hike.

We took the 3 hour hike and it was amazing there is also a 90 min. hike but if you arent experienced I truly recommend the lattet. The scenery was incredible the breeze was delightful and our guide was very knowledgable we learned about the dinosaurs that had passed through there got to see actual claw prints and some fossils we also learned the reason that the gorge is actually there what happened to the people who lived in the area and the steos that were taken for preservation. The hike started at 9 a.m. and we toured the Gorge from the top to the middle and then the bottom I highly recommend this scenic outing.

If you dont go on the guided tour than I dont recommend you go. I paid $5 to just walk the trail. I had some teenager in a golf cart tell us to get out after we stepped a few feet off the path to get a better view of a bird. He said we were trespassing on federal land, which seems pretty extreme considering we paid to walk around the park. IDK, it kinda seemed like he was on a power trip. Anyways, he followed us with his golf cart the whole way back to the parking lot while he was filming on his phone and smirking. Maybe he was doing snap chat or something, Im not really sure. I dont know what the kids are into these days, but it definitely seemed pretty rude.

We had a great morning heading out for a tour of the Canyon Lake Gorge today. Anna was our guide, and John was our Docent. They were absolutely wonderful! We learned so much about the 2002 flood, as well as all that was uncovered when the flood tore apart millions of years of rock to create the gorge. There is so much to see and learn. It s a beautiful tour, and I highly recommend making a reservation. We signed up for the 3 hour tour, but since we were the only members on this tour it went a bit faster than the time they allow. When booking, take in consideration the heat and your endurance level. There are two shaded areas for breaks, one with a bathroom. We enjoyed every fossil, waterfall, and dinosaur footprint!

Oh my goodness this place was a hidden gem! We went on mothers day and it was completely empty! There was no one else there. The visitors center has super cute little packs for the kids to check out that kept them entertained the entire hike. I honestly didnt expect my kiddos to make the full 2 miles but there was so much shade and so many rest areas we had such a blast! Definitely a great place to take the family

My wife and I went on this 3 hour tour and it was stunning. We couldn t believe it was Texas and I ve lived here my whole life. Our guide John was fantastic he had a true passion about educating us on the history of the gorge and the geological significance of the surroundings. John made the whole experience a delight and the rest of the staff was also very accommodating. We got to see real fossils literally by the handful including dinosaur tracks. Not to mention stunning views of the vast gorge with natural springs, waterfalls and exposed fault lines. I can say this was really a must see experience if you re in the area!

We only took the hike. We were not told we could not see the dinasour tracks from the hike until we had already paid for the hike. It had 8 spots to look out to see some of the water features and had a few flora marked but, we thought it could have been much better as for paying when a lot of hikes have muck better views.
