The Carver Library is a great resource for the Austin Community. Not only offering a wealth of knowledge about African American Culture and History, that is utilized by all races, cultures and socio econmic backgrounds. It ignites wonder, and inspiration. A magical quiet space. A Center for all of Austins Culture. It serves as unique Meeting place for Community Events and Celebrations. Wish more people would support this Historic Austin Library- Harvé Franks

This was a bridge for me as a child growing up in East Austin. And a student at Kealing Jr. High. I and and will forever be the Eastside 02 till I die. And my kids will know and keep the Eastide alive. We build it for free. Staple in the Black community for life.

We visited the George Washington Museum during the Austin Art Studio Tour 2023. This was a group show for the artists who are on the tour. Congratulations to all of those artists who sold their pieces. The prices were affordable and I wish we had attended this show the week prior. Some pieces were quite amazing, some were rather rudimentary...

The Boyd Vance theatre, like the Austin icon himself, is elegance and beauty in a small package. The museum staff are very welcoming. The museum exhibits eye-opening. And the LC Anderson exhibit a critical part of any central Texas historian s understanding of race issues in our not-always-as-progressive-as-we-think city.

Named for Carver, not about him. While we were visiting Austin, I saw the museum listed among the cultural resources of the city, and thought it would be a great opportunity for my teenage sons to learn more about one of the greatest botanists and food scientists of the late 19th & early 20th centuries. Sadly, there was nothing about him, except a single panel along with a number of other black pioneers in the sciences, and a small bust of him in the lobby. While other materials on blacks in Austin seemed to be well-designed, I found it very disappointing that virtually no meaningful information about Carver was available. It is a missed opportunity, in my view.

Not much to say about Carver Museum... front desk staff had no acknowledgment when I entered the building; an exhibit area was closed but no notice to visitors was posted, poor use of display space (glass enclosure in the lobby) but now thats my professional side talking as 20+ year museum curator, exec. director, content manager... a Thursday afternoon during the start of SXSW, and this place is just sittin there, what a waste! I asked for a card regarding the museum director or manager... the guy sitting at side table working on something could not find a card for director or any other staff ... Oh well!

Highly recommend visiting the Carver Museum to anyone sightseeing in historic East Austin. Admission is free of course, since its operated by the City of Austin, and the building hours are the same as before the pandemic, so no need to schedule appointments to visit. The Carver is Austins very first Black history museum and cultural center! Today its housed in a sleek and modern building but the original Carver museum/library building from 1930s is beautifully preserved on the same property. The museums Instagram @CarverMuseumATX always shares upcoming events like a monthly Black-owned marketplace, genealogy workshops, kid-friendly art activities and contemporary art exhibits. For example, the legendary George Clinton of Parliament/Funkadelic is exhibiting his original artwork at the Carver! The gallery isnt giant-sized so you can easily view everything within an hour. I also recommend visiting the surrounding neighborhood of East 11th St. and San Bernard St. - its full of historic churches, schools, and cemeteries that are in easy walking distance from the Carver.

We arrived here at around 330p on a Tuesday and noticed that the sign stated entry was appointment only. So, we made an appointment for 515p - 6p. Google Maps said the museum closed at 6pm and that timeslot was available on the EventBrite booking site. We arrive at exactly 515p, and a nice older gentleman tells us that the museum actually closes at 530p. He did apologize for the confusion and said that we could still view the gallery until closing at 530p. This slightly confusing experience aside, the gallery, though small, had some fascinating artifacts and information. However, for auch a large and impressive building...it appears to be underutilized. I would love to see them do more with the building and add more galleries. Also, the time needs to be updated on Google Maps so unsuspecting tourists like myself arent caught off guard. We would definitely return in the future if more events / galleries were added for viewing.
