Great date spot. Really appreciated the low lighting and friendly staff. The limited menu is a double-edged sword as I enjoy having less options, but I found there were only a handful of things I actually wanted to try. The things I had were praiseworthy, though.

Wow! I saw this restaurant on Somebody feed Phil. It could stand on the Barbecue alone, but when you add the Japanese influence, it takes it to a whole different level. If youre ordering cue, be sure to add on the Bento box, it made for an incredible experience.

Update: came with a couple friends out of town, which with the higher group number we were able to explore some of the funkier/more exotic options (the chinmi menu). Not only was every single dish savory and complex, but our server Logan was helpful with suggestions and timed each course perfectly. This place is consistent and I will keep coming back. Highly recommend, food is phenomenal. Came late (almost 10 pm) on a Saturday night and got seated immediately. cozy and eclectic indoor and outdoor spaces, comfortable but not too casual. The staff was friendly and to the point. Nice details, like a fresh wet towel to clean hands with. The negroni cocktail was good and overall service was quick. Every food item we ordered I would 100% get again- the charred damage, the hot pockets, and brisket bento box. Delicious savory goodness (like melt in your mouth fat) small-ish dishes with a variety of Asian and bbq flavors that made for a great date night. Prices are reasonable for the quality.

Thank you for an amazing meal that delighted all our senses. The flavors were magical and presentations spot on. Our server Jason was attentive and made sure we were well educated in the menu to make the choices we did for our meal as well as choice of a bottle of Saki. Dishes sizes were just the right size to allow for tasting multiple items, and IMHO the prices were fair, if not on the bargain side! We navigated through many choices and sizes of dishes successfuly, and left room for desserts that were perfect endings to our meal. Alex the manager checked in on us and all the staff running the food stopped to make sure we had everything we needed. Another great Tatsu-ya experience.

Before you go, theres something you must know: you need a reservation for this place. The check-in process is a bit unique you do it outside the restaurant at a traditional Japanese food stand. To the left theres a computer where a staff member occasionally comes out to help you check in, which seemed to confuse a lot of people. The first thing you notice is that the atmosphere here is 10 out of 10, truly incredible blend between a Japanese bar and a typical BBQ joint. We were seated outside at picnic tables, but the two other areas inside were equally charming. This barbecue and Japanese fusion spot is absolutely out of this world. The smoke flavor in the skewers is prominent, especially in the dry-aged beef my favorite. Oh my goodness, the flavor is so incredible that you could eat it without any sauce, and it would still be amazing. But when paired with the sauce purée, it gets even better, and the butter melts on your tongue. The cornbread was also very good, very cute in the shape of Taiyaki. However, the pork wrapped around scallions was a bit odd the scallion flavor was overpowering the meat. But the Hot Pocketz? Absolutely amazing crispy with just the right amount of cheese inside. The only downside was that it was a little hard to get the staffs attention because it was so busy, but overall, the experience was fantastic.

Honestly a great Asian/Texan fusion, they did a solid job using Japanese ingredients without destroying them. As an Asian American my favorite thing was eating texas bbq with white rice here. Yellowtail collar was our favorite thing, would ve tried the tuna collar except they sold out. Imo eating family style works best for the portion sizes, price and portions also pretty good totaling about $50/person. Minor food critiques: Generally on the salty side, and brisket at 9pm was on the drier side (miso bbq sauce made up for that)

A Japanese skewers izakaya with a full atmosphere. Dark lighting and alcohol are the most important elements of an izakaya. However, there are no lights on the table, so everyone has to take out their mobile phone flashlight to read the menu, which slightly ruins the dining experience. . As for the food, it can be considered a good quality food, but the portions are small, so the unit price is on the high side. In addition, the cocktails are not very tasty, and the bartending skills need to be improved. All in all, the atmosphere seems nice, but the wine is not good and the price is too expensive. I will not visit again.

Walked in and felt like Id been transported to a fascinating cognitive mashup of Hiroshima and Austin. I used to live in Hiroshima, so this is absolutely 100% complimentary. The tapas style service can get pricey but the food is top notch, and an excellent fusion of izakaya and Texas smokehouse fare. The surprise of my visit was a pitch-perfect kaki fry (breaded fried oyster, a Hiroshima specialty) - I rarely see this outside Japan and it was excellent. Everything I tried was scintillatingly good. Definitely the place to take friends ... or a date :)

I recently dined at Kemuri Tatsu-Ya, and while the atmosphere is certainly intriguing, the food was a major letdown. Each skewer, tasted mediocre. The BBQ boat was a huge disappointment; it was a sampler with dry meats on a boat. The tako Wasabi tasted off, did not finish the dish. I had been eyeing this place for over a year, saving it in my favorites. Made a reservation for a large party only to disappoint everyone for choosing the restaurant.... Not reading the reviews was my mistake. The dinner portions are small, and the food quality was disappointing. The specialty drink, Pain Killer, was a cup full of ice. I do not recommend it. The tuna collar was market price, over seasoned... Overall, Kemuri Tatsu-Ya did not deliver on either BBQ/Japanese fusion food and was overpriced.

I have not yet personally been to an izakaya in Japan, but my husband was thrilled to find a place with a similar intimacy and dining experience And when youre at a Tatsuya establishment, you dont forget to visit the restroom. They always put thought into it. This one really tickled me with its intentional darkness, like a scene from a moody anime.

I sat there for over an hour with a citrus juicer (from s grapefruit sour cocktail) in front of me that no one cared to take away, until we just dumped it on the next table, and in the meanwhile not a single person asked if I wanted to order any food. Maybe the food is as good as it used to be, I would not know, but I had to wait for our party to pay the bill and went to Whataburger to get something to eat. Disappointed, as before both service and food used to be good, but I think I will go elsewhere when I want to get something Japanese.

Atmosphere was fun and lively. The welcome was warm. The service left something to be desired especially given the prices of the food and thus the expected tip. At a restaurant this size with such a quaint menu, I would expect our wait staff to understand the daily specials menu (they did not). Their food was fine enough but nothing to write home about. Even their best seller , the hot pockets, were one of our least favorite items. The Barbecue boat bento was easily our favorite item. That was the only thing we ate that truly felt both Japanese AND Texan. The cocktails, while tasty, were only a few sips of a drink because of the amount of ice they pile into the glass .and for $15?? Come on. This is the type of place I would go to for a bottle of sake and maybe an appetizer, solely for the exciting atmosphere, before moving on to something else. While a fun concept-this restaurant was a bit over-hyped and over-priced.

We ordered the Tsukune (Chicken meatball skewer), chili cheese Takoyaki, Hot Pocketz, Kara-Age Chicken, and the BBQ Boat +Bento. Our fave was the Tsukune and Kara-Age. They were flavorful! The Hot Pocketz was a little too strong on the cheese flavor for me, and as far as the Chili Cheese Takoyaki, I think I m just a purist and prefer the og Takoyaki! The BBQ boat was very tasty, but we could have done without adding the bento box. I d go again!

I am glad I am not the only one sharing how this place has went downhill....We went for HH yesterday (got there around 5:45) and sat at the raw bar. I think that was the most pleasant part-being seated. Our server greeted us about 10 min into sitting down and boy did he not care at all about our questions. I had been before but my boyfriend had not so I asked him to explain the classic section to us and he literally just read the menu outloud to us. I said well, we can read but can you give us some insight on how it comes, what we should pair with it, etc and he said nothing...just looked at us. I was a little dumbfounded. We then asked what the size was for a glass of sake. Sake isnt cheap and we just wanted to understand if we do a bottle or a glass. He looked at us and said Well, its like half of a coke can... What?! Food came and it was bad-cornbread was extremely dry, karage was very greasy and cold, ribeye skewer was beyond fatty and the hot pocket was a burnt piece of cheese on top of a greasy small meat pie. I have been before and was excited to share some dishes but we both were so disgusted with the food that not only did we barely eat it but we wont be going back. Also, if you are a server and you see most of the food still there, wouldnt you inquire? We didnt even speak up because why? Our server was so rude to begin with, why even try. So sad how this used to be, but also I feel better reading that Im not the only one.

Horrible experience with the guy seating tables. Rude, and then mad because he turned us away with no reservation at 7:45 on Sunday night, telling us it will be a least 9:30 before he can seat us (4 people) so we say no problem and leave. but then I go online to make one for next weekend and there s an open reservation every 15 minutes from 8 until 9:45 right then. So I make one and we go back and say we grabbed a reservation and he tells me I screwed up his whole system by making a reservation. Then after laughing at and lecturing me and making us wait 10 minutes. walks us past 3 open tables inside and a half empty patio area to seat us in the only table outside without a single ounce of airflow or a fan. All 4 of us sweated to soaking wet clothing, on an anniversary occasion while we spent too much money on tiny tapas plates that were mostly just ok with a couple really good ones. $240 later, you couldn t pay us to go back. That patio is like hell on earth in May. By July, people will pass out in that table he put us in for spite. So many great bbq places, this one is not it. Go for just the octopus balls and cornbread inside at the bar only and only if he s not seating it, and then save yourself and get the hell out. Parking: Ironically we got one of several open spots in their smallish parking lot, twice. They were not that busy.

One of the best meals I have had in my life! We ordered so many dishes and all of them were amazing. Taiyaki cornbread Ton Maki skewer (pork and onion roll) Tsukune skewer (meatball; chicken with an amazing, very unique soy and egg sauce) Beefy Shrooms skewer - dry aged beef, pearl mushrooms Hot pocketz Takoyaki BBQ Boat The standout was the dry aged beef skewer. That might be the best thing I have ever tasted. $14 for one skewer but it was so worth it! The BBQ boat is a steal. Perfect for two, or even three, people. You get everything - wings, pork, brisket, and eel. The pork, wow, perfectly melt-in-your-mouth goodness. And the brisket was fantastic; I m not usually a brisket fan but this one was really special. I had high expectations of Kemuri, but they were not met. The place is overcome with flies, even though they put personal fans on the tables. It seems they might be able to combat them more, especially for a diner spending over $50/person, it doesn t enhance the experience. The food was tasty, but the portions were exceptionally small. The small plates are single portions and not enough to share. The service was lackadaisical - it took a long time after we were seated to even be acknowledged by any server. Perfect Match Kemuri Tatsu-Ya combines two of my favorite things in a match I absolutely loved Describing itself as both a Japanese izakaya and Texas smokehouse, Kemuri honors the flavors of Japan while bringing a distinctive Texas spin Items I loved included the brisket served with Tsukemen noodles, the smokehouse flavored bbq tuna collar with nori seaweed wraps as well as the chinmi sake accompaniments that you often see only at more authentic Japanese establishments As we enjoyed our sake and sampled a variety of delicious bites, it was very clear that Austin s diverse food scene has got game It s easy to be skeptical of any fusion restaurant but Kemuri is refreshingly creative with bold flavors, great portions and unique items Sweet and Sour Mozuku Shooter $4 / Taiyaki Cornbread $6.5 / Jellyfish $6 / Ankimo $13 / Beef Tartare $19 / Tsukune $7 / Beefy Shrooms $14 / BBQ Tsukemen with Brisket $15 / BBQ Eel $16 / Bento +$15 / Tuna Collar $35 / Tamago Pudding $6 Kemuri Tatsu-Ya (Austin, TX) Seating is both indoor and outdoor in the back patio. They have really perfected the menu and the flavor diversity will really keep your tastes buds seeking more surprises as you explore the menu as you continue to throw orders in. This is a perfect way to impress your out of town guests and coworkers looking for an original Austin experience. Pro tip: get that early reservation for the half off cocktails happy hour - an absolute rarity in Austin these days! Parking: Street parking is the best option to seek. Ride share is ideal, but not a far walk to the restaurant if you have to park a block away.

We had RSVP for 9:30pm on a Saturday. We didnt actually sit down till around 9:45ish. We ordered some shared dishes and they came after the actual entree. Half of our table had food while the other half had nothing. When we finally got our food, the portions were so small, I had a hard time to believe it was enough to share between 2-3 people. I ate here maybe a bit over a year ago and the standard has really dropped. It was a very disappointing experience overall. The waitress did try to check in regularly but idk if they maybe had issues in their kitchen but it was a messy dinner service.

Until tonight this used to be my favorite place in Austin. I ve been here many times and always enjoyed it. For that reason I always directed everyone who asked me about a great bar/eatery to go visit. I always talked this place up and loved to come here regularly. Today was my birthday. My sons asked me what my favorite place was and I told them I wanted to go there. One of my sons, who lives a bit further away had never been so I, as usual, described all the great food, service etc. I usually love the Tsukemen. It is supposed to come with a piece of delicious charred brisket. We ordered two portions. They are pretty small and expensive for the amount but I always deemed it worthy because of the delicious flavors. However what I received was not that delicious combination. Apparently they ran out of brisket and rather than say they were out or ask whether substitutions were acceptable, they presented us with an inferior dish containing 1 piece of pork belly, some ramen and the usual egg. To say I was dismayed is to downplay the disappointment I felt upon being served this. Not only the flavors were not there but the carelessness in the preparation was also evident. The amount they charged was the same they would charge for the original dish even though they did not serve what I paid for. In addition to that, we ordered the pork belly dish, charred edamame and some other stuff. We come here all the time. We know what the portions quantities are supposed to be. The pork belly dish only came with 2 tiny slices of pork belly for the price of a regular portion, the portion of edamame was also on the smaller side. The service was also very slow and inattentive. I had to move the grill from the grilled jerky to another table because my sons almost burnt themselves several times but no servers checked on us long enough so that I gave up and became my own busboy. My son paid the bill and gave a good tip because he works in the food industry but the embarrassment I felt having him look at me in wonder how I could say this was my favorite place ever will stay with me for a long time. I have traveled and dined all over North America and Europe and until tonight I truly felt this eatery was my favorite. Not anymore. My birthday celebration was pretty much ruined. After we left, we went and got food at a fast food restaurant, paid 1/4 of the amount we were charged here and that s how everyone got supper and paid for two different restaurants in 1 night. I looked forward to tonight so much and now I feel like I was really let down. My son spent quite a bit of money and traveled all this way for a very negative experience. As we were leaving after paying quite a bit of money for a very disappointing meal, they asked us how our experience was and for the first time in years of coming here, I had to say it was terrible and asked why they served us a different dish but charged us just as much. Had they told us they had run out, we would have selected something else. It s misleading and dishonest to charge people for a certain product but serve something completely different.

Great date night spot. Little pricey, since you have to order many plates with them being small-ish, but the quality of the food made it okay for us. Few favorites - the pork/scallion rolls, cornbread, brisket, the drinks - all so good. Honestly we were happy with all of the plates we ordered - something that doesn t happen often for us at many Austin restaurants.. but we appreciated the flavors of the dishes at Kemuri. Service was great as well, very timely- our server was attentive and funny, gave us recommendations and checked on us the perfect amount.

This place is so unique that I felt compelled to make a post of it. The unthinkable fusion of Japanese and Texan cuisine. - it s simply out of this world! If you are a foodie, as I am, you must come here. Their Hot Pocketz blends brisket, Gouda cheese and tofu to perfection. Their fried chicken is absolutely delicious. But their Chashu Pork Belly is the best thing I had all over Austin- yes, including Franklin s brisket.

Delicious food and great vibe! I tried the sweet and sour mozuku shooter with oyster and it was super refreshing. I would definitely recommend it with oyster - it added a lot of flavor to balance out the sourness. Out of the skewers, the hotate was my favorite; the scallops were very tender. We also ordered from the off menu - I dont remember the name but it was basically squid marinated in its own guts. It was definitely fishy, but it a good way. Expect a lot of interesting flavors - I highly recommend it!

The hot poketz and the takoyaki were also pretty good. The match painkiller and the kurakura came in these really good glasses! Definitely a spot to check out if you re looking to try something new. This place is phenomenal. If you re adventurous with food, this is a MUST. The service is incredible. They staff spends tons of time explaining the menu (which is needed) and making recommendations but once you place an order it comes out fast. They make you feel comfortable going at your own pace. I have tried nearly every item on the menu and there s not anything that s not perfectly done. My favorite restaurant in Austin. Dietary restrictions: One member of my part had significant dietary restrictions and the staff was very friendly and accommodating. Our server remembered it from the reservation, brought it up herself, and double checked with the kitchen when she wasn t sure. Parking: Tiny parking lot. You might get lucky but will probably have to park on the street and walk a ways.

this is an update to a 5 star review I gave last year. Overall, had the manager, Neil, not stepped in, this would be a bad review. We booked a dinner to celebrate a birthday at 745. After a 15 min delay, we were seated at 8 and immediately served water and menus. But then nothing happened. After 10 minutes passed of watching servers walk right by us, I got up and went outside to ask the host about status. He said he would inform somebody. After that, a server greeted us. We ordered a pitcher of beer while we waited to order. Then again, nothing happened for 10 minutes. It was just a pitcher of beer, so I walked up to the bar, saw our pitcher of beer just sitting there, and asked if I could just grab it. Bartender said he would take care of it. I sat down and the pitcher arrived with our waiter soon to follow. We ordered. A minute later, Neil the manager arrived. He asked how we were and we honestly told him, that we basically had waited for 25 minutes and that while we appreciated they were busy, maybe not accepting the reservation would be better? It isnt a fun experience to have to ask about being served. Neil gets 5 stars for making up for our experience. Bravo! The food is still great although, like other reviews, perhaps not all for the better. (i liked ordering the burnt ends not as part of the ramen). Portion size seems smaller but maybe thats just me:) We have been to Kemuri probably 6 times in 2 years. It was our go to place. Now, though, I am not too sure. We would think twice about it... perhaps the late reservation time is not a good idea? What if Neil isnt there and the manager doesnt care? Original review: incredible. recommend pitchers of beer versus by glass. also add the bento box option.

Me & my friends have gone to Kemuri-Tatsu-Ya 3 times. The first two experiences were fantastic. In our most recent trip yesterday my group collectively noticed that our favorite choices ordered had taken a noticeable decline in their taste. Hot Pocketz is my personal favorite dish but it tasted generic this trip. The ribs were a huge favorite for our group and this trip they were very dry instead of being moist and flavorful. They need bbq desperately for the ribs and they don t come with any. Their cornbread another favorite of ours came out average the first time we ordered it last night (it was mushy and not crispy as usual). It also didn t taste fresh. Then we ordered another round of cornbread but this time it was both fresh and crispier. The brisket, Kara-age 2.0 & Puddin on the Ritz remained fantastic on all 3 trips to here. Disappointed on this most recent trip though as I am likely leaving USA for the foreseeable future & was very much underwhelmed on my final trip. Our server was not really attentive throughout our entire final experience either. By the looks of it he had to take care of too many tables to provide quality to the tables he did have.

For our mains we got the hot pockets, Kara Age, and brisket binto style. All three were delicious, inventive, and just plain fun to eat. We also got the chicken skewers which were fine but not worth ordering IMO. We debated getting dessert and I am so glad we did. The banana pudding was AMAZING. My overall impression is that the prices are not justified by the quality (i.e., its too expensive). All-in-all, I would probably not return. We enjoyed most of the dishes we tried. The brisket had good flavor but the bark that was so crunchy I thought I bit into a bone fragment. It seems like the menu and service style is structured around shareables and family-style dining but the service did not adapt well when we didnt want to follow that style. Four entrees were each delivered to the table at different times resulting in the uncomfortable experience of one person having their food but not wanting to be discourteous and beginning to eat alone. The server was not well educated on allergens and didnt know what menu items were gluten free (or could be modified to be gluten free). Other nit-picks: - Despite only having four diners, the staff running the food did not know who ordered what. - We were brought cold hand towels when we were seated even though we sat outside on a cold day. - Was served a different beer than what I ordered. Dietary restrictions: Server did not know what dishes were gluten free. The majority of dishes were not gluten free and could not be modified.
