We waited 73 minutes on our food. We were there on a Sunday 37 minutes after they opened. We were told the backup was because they have 1 cook. Gumbo took just as long. Jumbo only requires a bowl. Very sad.

Upon entering the restaurant, it looks a little bit unfinished. There are large signs on the door that express the sentiment that if you don t like waiting for their food, you may want to try somewhere else. The line was a bit long. However, the wait was worth it. we drove from the Austin area to try this place. We ordered the catfish meal, the shrimp and grits meal and the red beans and rice meal. The catfish meal you get a very large portion of a flattened catfish fillet. My side dishes were white beans, which were amazing and greens. The shrimp and grits were amazing. The only thing that is a little off on that meal is that you get like 20 tomatoes in the bowl with the grits and shrimp. If you re not a tomato fan, you can ask them to hold off on the extra tomatoes that they add. But overall, it is delicious. The white beans and rice were simply amazing, along with that was a very large piece of fried chicken breast without the bone. The drinks there are pretty good we had the lemonade. The drinks are self serve. You must get your own silverware. Overall, the experience was nice. The white staff there were extremely busy. The gumball, although we did not order it and saw it at someone else s table, that looked amazing. Perhaps when I go back, I will get the gumbo, try the red beans and rice and if they have the lamb chops on that particular trip, I would love to try their lamb chops.

Omg! I wish I could live here. The food and service is excellent. Meals are prepared when ordered, so there is a wait, which we do not mind, knowing that our food is fresh. The portions are quite generous. We had the fried catfish, gumbo, shrimp and grits, greens, cornbread and pinto beans. There is a good variety of beverages. I like that one can serve oneself, as mixing just the right cocktail is desired. I would have rated higher, however, we had to fan away flies during our entire meal. Regardless of the pests, the food and service were so good, we shall return.

We went for lunch a few days after they were listed in the NY Times 50 best restaurants article. We got there at 11:03, since their website said they opened at 11. When we arrived, there was a sign that said they would open at 11:30, and already a line of about 25 people. From when we sat down at 11:30, it took 80 minutes for us to just place an order; after that it took another 45 for us to see our food. (I gave one star for service because of that; the servers themselves were quick, helpful, cheerful, and making the best of a bad situation.) Moving on from that, the food was exceptional. The cup of gumbo was an 8-inch bowl with half a crab and a chicken leg sticking out of it; besides being a *very* generous portion (youll see this again), it was delicious - the most flavorful, richest gumbo you could imagine, with a smoked pork hock hidden inside to boot. The cheese curds I cant really comment on - Ive never had cheese curds, and I ordered them because we were so hungry by the time I ordered. I had the catfish, which came with remoulade, tartar, and cocktail sauce; for my two sides, collard greens and jalapeno blueberry coleslaw. As you can see, it was not a small piece of fish, but it was the perfect thinness and perfectly breaded. Collard greens were overwhelming - thats saying something right there. And I didnt pick up any jalapeno in the slaw, but it was fresh, sweet, and just the right side for my fish. My son got the NOLA hot chicken sandwich, which again you can see was huge. He claims its better than any fried chicken hes ever had, which puts it at the top of a very tall mountain. All in all, this is an experience you need to have at least once in your life.

The food is AWESOME!! I give mad props to the overall flavor. The portions are crazy huge. Seriously, be careful. You might order too much food and not realize it. Chef-you are doing great things. The cons though: The place is dirty. My chair felt like it was stuck to the floor it was so sticky. The table was dirty when we sat down. The ordering process is a bit odd; you order at the front. They dont give you a number or anything. This did cause the food server to not be sure what we ordered. It was fixed quickly, but still. The wait time was a bit unreasonable even though they warn you at the entrance that it could take a while. 45 mins before our first bit of food came out. BTW, this is a BYOB place. But, there is an unused bar that people sit and eat at. Accompanied by an old, ugly refrigerator hanging out there. If this place was cleaned up, had normal wait staff, and sped up the cook time, this place would be off the charts popular. Right now though, I just dont think I will make it back. EVEN though the food was SO good.

This isn t an I m hungry, let s swing by V&A for lunch type of establishment. This is more European style, where your dining experience will take a minimum 2+ hours. You ll likely wait an hour for your food, and the food is ABSOLUTELY worth the wait. They make it all from scratch. I make it an event, I BYOB a good wine or sangria, and my friends and I chat or play cards or board games while we wait. My favorite is when I take a friend there that I m dying to catch up with, because we get to hang out and catch up while we wait for the food, and then the food comes and everyone is always blown away by how good it is. Dining there is always good times with friends, drinking and having fun or playing games while we wait, and then enjoying absolutely amazing food together. I love that place! If you re an entitled diner, stay away. Neither the loyal customers or the restaurant want you there. You WILL wait an hour for your food, you WILL serve your own drink and get your own utensils, and you WILL absolutely love the food! V&A is wonderful and misunderstood, the only complaint about it is the wait time. So make it an experience instead of a wait! Bring drinks and games to enjoy with your loved ones! Don t be a hater and give it a bad rating because you thought the wait time would be the same as McDonald s.

This place is one of the best restaurants in the area. I had the sticky chicken and my bf had the pork steak and both were amazing and tasted home cooked. For sides we had the sweet potato s, red beans and riced, coleslaw and the fried okra and everything was perfect. I asked for ranch with my okra and the sweet lady working the front brought out a poblano ranch (which was ok). The service was great the staff was friendly & it was fantastic experience. Only issue I can think of was that it s hot inside the restaurant but it really wasn t that big of a deal when everything else was fantastic

First time here. Drove by the first time and missed it as I couldnt see the sign from the direction I came from. Doors were unlocked ten till 11, but staff asked everyone to wait until they were ready. At 5 after 11, we all went in uninvited. We were rushed to tables and told our buzzer would go off when they were ready for us, because they were still trying to get set up in the litchen. We were also told it would be 45 mins or so before our food was ready as everything is prepared from scratch. 25 minute after being seated, we were able to order. A manager came around checking on everyone. I asked him if he could turn down the music a bit as it was loud, and we were yelling at each other to talk over it. He said he could, but the owner would just tuen it up again. I asked if he wanted his patrons to shout at each other over the music. He basically rolled his eyes and walk on to the next table. As an older person dealing with anxiety, hearing loss, and ringing in my ears, it is hard enough to track a conversation when there are a lot of people in one room as it is, add 6 speakers in the small room and concrete floors and it is almost impossible to hear what is being said at your table. Finally, we were called to order. There was some confusion about ordering, but the cashier was patient, and we got it done. She handed us our drinks and point to the back of the room for us to fix our own. So I had to ask, why were we fixing our own drinks and getting our own untensils if we just tipped 20%. The answer was they didnt have a server, only a runners we poured our own drinks, gathered our own silverware, and found our own condiments. This was a little off-putting as some silver where was in one place and the rest somewhere else. The food is the only reason Id go back, it was superb! Everything we ordered was wonderful! Hopefully they can come to a better decision about the loud music.

I came here once before and today while with my senior parents, finally got to visit again. On arrival, the solo server explained the restaurant was very short staffed and gave us a device that would chime and light up when the kitchen was ready for our orders. I think that took about 20 minutes. I ordered the sticky chicken special with collard greens and plantains, my mom got red beans & rice with a fried chicken breast, and my dad got the shrimp & grits. It took another 30 minutes or so for our food, but again, we were given fair warning. Plus I remembered this as being a from-scratch restaurant so I figured it would be worth the wait. Portions were gargantuan. My sticky chicken (pictured) was indeed very sticky in its crispy, sweet sauced exterior, with an ethereal juiciness inside. The collard greens and plantains came out perfectly and the scotch bonnet sauce that comes with it is TRULY spicy. My meal deserved five stars. Mom s chicken breast was probably 11 ounces. It arrived on a bed of fresh thyme. She enjoyed every bite she could and packed up the rest for later. Dad devoured his veggie- laden shrimp & grits without a word, though later on the ride home, he stated it was a bit salty. While were eating, the same server arrived to our table and told my mom that the kitchen discovered the beans were extra salty. She offered a replacement, which my mom declined because I know she doesn t like to trouble servers. This restaurant could easily get five stars from me once they work out their staffing and salting issues. At least for now they do a fabulous job of communication with customers.

Aaron is a wonderful Chef , but he does need to learn to TRAIN & TRUST his chefs and people to run the restaurant as it should be. They could have a bar, and great entertainment but they cannot out will not handle it. They want to remain a small restaurant, but people come from ALL OVER to eat this WONDERFUL FOOD and if you come in HUNGRY, just KNOW that you may end up waiting AN HOUR to eat! We first started going here when it opened and we loved it, we thought it was gonna be the best thing in Clearlake and its still is as far as food but business design is not a good model and I hope it survives. I LOVE this place and wish the BEST for it!! TRAIN AND TRUST!!

Vegetarian options: Veggie special

This restaurant is good for vegetarians, but as a vegan, it was tasty for the only meal that I could order. At first glance at the menu, the veggie special comes with fried plantains, cornbread, and three sides. The three sides I chose were sweet potatoes (yams), rice with gravy (vegetarian), and cucumber and tomato salad (vegan). Dont be fooled by this New Orleans-style establishment, there isnt a waitstaff or servers. You have to go to the front to order your food and they still expect you to leave a tip when they didnt do anything, but take your order. The decor, tables, and ambiance of the restaurant are very rustic even the paint was peeling off of the center table. They have AC and a bit of a flying gnats/flies situation inside the dining area. I kept having to swat away a pesky gnat that was annoying me. There wasnt much space between the different tables. The wait time was very long since the food was made to order. I witnessed a lot of disappointed faces as the food took its precious time to come out of the kitchen. One thing that bothered me was the tiny portion sizes of the veggie special. It only came with two small pieces of plantains, all of the sides were equivalent to a cup. Not filling whereas anything else ordered on the menu was monstrous sizes. Also, with the portion sizes of a childs meal, the price shouldnt have been $14. It should have been at least $8. The flavor was delicious and everything was well seasoned. I didnt eat the cornbread because if it was made with eggs, it would have made me terribly sick. I just couldnt take any chances. The outside patio is ugly and pretty gross with all the cigarette butts planted inside of the dirt of graveyard plants. I even saw some trash in some of the pots. There isnt much of a curb appeal. The rest of my party immensely loved the food even one person mentioned that it tasted like their moms food from childhood times. It is slim pickings that Ill come back to due to the tiny portion sizes. I couldnt get my moneys worth!

I came tonight after calling and inquiring about their oxtail plate. I came to the store and a nice gentleman took my order plus tip, he told me ahead of time that it would take 45 mins max for my order. I ordered at 5:19pm. I said I would leave and come back to pick it up. He took my number and said he would call me when it was ready. At 6:05 I returned to the store (no phone call) I went back to the front and asked about my order, a young lady told me she would go check and when she returned she told me it would be another 5 mins. 25 mins later after not hearing anything and just sitting there, I went and asked again (I am frustrated at this point) I was told by a different lady that she didn t know and was busy but would check. She was snarky. My husband is from st Lucia and he loves oxtails and we eat this kind of meal all the time. The collard greens were disgusting af! The oxtail was undercooked and not tender like it should be. Overall our first experience at this place and is now our last! I do not recommend this place at all. I do recommend a place in Webster called Lucian s, that sells amazing oxtail plates! We spent $35 including tip for a meal that was not appetizing. The beans and rice were the only thing we could stomach. Please don t waste your money.

This is definitely a hidden gem of a restaurant. The food was great and the atmosphere was very relaxed. We came here on a Sunday right at opening (11am). You pick up a menu when you get in and pick a table to sit at. A waitress/waiter will stop by your table and hand you a buzzer, and when your buzzer turns on, you walk up to the cashier where they will take your order. For our appetizer, we had their pretzels and dip - very delicious. For our main dish, we had red beans & rice with a side of fried chicken, cornbread, and greens. The other dish was shrimp and crawfish ettoufee with a side of Cajun cream corn. The portions were very generous and tasted very good. The only negative review I can say is that where we were seated, there was a number of gnats flying around but nonetheless, I would definitely recommend!

Went to restroom and sewage flies met me at the door. Server dropping food on floor didn t bother to pick it up. Horrible!!!. So disappointed. It was very nice on Upper Bay Road.

I was less than impressed. Be prepared to wait twice. You arrive and get a buzzer, once the buzzer goes off its your turn to walk up and order. After ordering we were told the food would take 45 minutes, ours took closer to an hour. My food was salty, didnt like the red beans and rice and the sticky chicken was just okay. I did love the okra. I think for the amount of time and the whole ordeal I expected A+ plus food but would rate it C+ at best.

Phenomenal food. Full of flavor and huge portions. The rue in the shrimp and grits was a little too salty, but thats a personal preference. The spicy chicken sandwich didnt try to overwhelm with spice. It was full of flavor and the spice was an added benefit. I didnt order it, but that was one of the biggest pieces of catfish Ive ever seen on a plate.

I read about this restaurant in June 24 Texas Highways magazine and added it to my must try list of restaurants. The giant pretzel with crab dip was interesting. The pretzel was very good but we couldn t taste the crab in the dip. The other appetizer we got was much better it had the potatoes and pork belly cracklins. As for the entrees, they are huge. Really big enough for 2 people to share. The blackboard pork steak had a wonderful glaze. I ordered the red beans and rice with greens and fried chicken thighs. Again huge and all had great flavor. The beans were very thick and just needed some water so they could mix better with the rice which I did with my leftovers. I expected a bone in thigh lightly fried but the boneless was pounded out and had heavy batter. Still good but just not as expected. The catfish was wonderful and we also recommend the cucumber tomato salad done with pickling cucumbers and the corn was also delicious. Overall this restaurant did live up to the hype. Highly recommend. It is BYOB and do not accept reservations. It is a casual environment. Vegetarian options: Vegetable plate Red beans and rice dish

I had high expectations for Viola & Agnes based off all the 5 star reviews but sadly my husband and I were let down. We were told about the long wait times, we waited for an hour for our appetizer. The waiting was not the issue the food was, we tried the poutine, Nola catfish sandwich and the andouille sausage bacon stew. My husband described his stew as if they used all the seasonings they had, up to the point where you didn t know what you were tasting. But the cornbread, rice, and beans were better than the stew. He didn t finish his plate which is rare. For me the catfish sandwich tasted bland and oily, the only really good thing was the cucumber tomato salad and the poutine. Overall for the price, wait time, and mid food this place is definitely not worth the hype.

The food is fantastic, overpriced, rich, the wait will take forever and the wait staff is terrible... but oh my God does the food taste good. Be advised that youll be waiting at least an hour and a half for your food. Maybe even an hour for just appetizers even on a Tuesday or Wednesday. They operate like a hauté cuisine. If you want authentic or home style cajun/creole food youre not gonna find it here. What you will find is a creative and innovative menu with a regular array of rotating and seasonal items and specials. The atmosphere isnt great, but if the owner invests a bit of cash into the bar and actually hires some more wait staff, this could very well be your favorite place to spend a quarter of your day. Oh my gosh is the food good.

A Culinary Journey to the Heart of NOLA: Viola and Agnes Delivers Soulful Flavors Amidst Challenges Nestled in the heart of our community lies Viola and Agnes, a soul food haven that promises a taste of New Orleans with every bite. With Chef Aarons commitment to sourcing the freshest local ingredients, this restaurant brings a burst of creativity and flavor to every dish. From the moment you step through the doors of Viola and Agnes, the aroma of scratch-made, NOLA-style meals fills the air, tantalizing your taste buds and stirring your soul. The menu is a celebration of Southern comfort food, featuring classics like shrimp and grits, jambalaya, and fried chicken alongside innovative twists that keep you coming back for more. One of the standout features of Viola and Agnes is Chef Aarons dedication to sourcing the freshest local ingredients. His daily visits to the seafood market ensure that every dish is brimming with the flavors of the Gulf Coast, with seafood thats as fresh as it gets. Its a commitment to quality and authenticity that shines through in every bite. However, despite the culinary delights that await, Viola and Agnes is not without its challenges. The restaurants cleanliness leaves something to be desired, with noticeable dirtiness that detracts from the overall dining experience. Additionally, the wait times for food can be quite lengthy, testing the patience of even the most eager diners. Furthermore, theres a bit of confusion regarding the self-service nature of the restaurant, particularly when it comes to tableware and condiments. While some may appreciate the hands-on approach, others may find it inconvenient or off-putting, especially given the high prices and large portions. Despite these challenges, the soulful flavors and generous portions at Viola and Agnes are undeniable. For those willing to overlook the shortcomings and embrace the vibrant spirit of New Orleans cuisine, a visit to this local gem is well worth the journey. With a few improvements in cleanliness and service, Viola and Agnes has the potential to become a true culinary destination in our community.

Love this place! As a Louisiana native, I really enjoyed the Neo-soul take on traditional New Orleans foods. Note: The food here is amazing, but it is NOT what most people would call traditional cajun or creole. Also, some dishes take a while, so be prepared to wait a bit. While you do, though, youll be listening to good music and picking up the scent of great meals being created in the kitchen! Oh, and I found the staff to be very nice. Definitely recommend.

My socks have been blown off by this little place!!! Truly unexpectedly have the absolute most robust flavors in their food! The outside just seems like a normal restaurant but the inside is where the magic happens. We orders the poutine, which was out of this world! The pork belly was sensational! I can t even full describe what was going on in my mouth but it was 100% satisfying. Fried cheese curds with the red gravy: that gravy is so delicious and has unique flavors that are harmonious with the fried cheese. Shrimp and grits (my #1 favorite food so I had high expectations): I didn t think I could have tasted a better shrimp and grits from my usual restaurant until I came here. The bread on the side was SO soft yet crispy, the shrimp was big and grits exploding with flavor! It s a little more on the savory side so if you are looking for low sodium, this isn t the dish for you. Originally ordered the Cajun jambalaya but it was temporarily not available (which was fine because there is tons more dishes to try) so ordered the sticky chicken per their suggestion. That sticky chicken!!!! Sweet baby Jesus! Do not ever take that off the menu! No words for that incredible, unique dish. Just go try it. Overall, as someone who loves to cook everyday, this place has the same homemade flavors and full of love for each dish. I will be back!

We found this restaurant 3 weeks ago while on a girls trip 5 hours from home and decided to try it based on Google reviews. The food is fantastic! It is flavorful, unique, creative and just outstanding. We enjoyed it so much that when we found ourselves needing a hotel after a cruise, we chose a hotel close to this restaurant so more of our family could enjoy the food. Our service experience this time on Saturday evening March 2 left a sour taste in our mouth. We ordered 3 appetizers and 4 entrees. One of the employees came to tell our table and the table next to ours that the chef was out of one ingredient for the poutine and would we like anything in its place. We opted for the cheese curds instead. The table next to us couldnt find anything they wanted and they had their order refunded. But then they asked for the sausage/bacon stew and received it. Ok extra customer service for the party of 2 who didnt get the exact same appetizer that we ordered. But wait, theres more...the employee then brought out a gift certificate to their table and apologized profusely for the lack of appetizer. What are we? Chopped liver? Maybe the two next to us were famous food critics or relatives or frequent diners? If we hadnt witnessed the service they got and we did not, we would have left thinking our evening was good, our food delicious, and wouldnt have really though much about the appetizer being replaced with something of less value. We left feeling like meh, we didnt get that same courtesy and literally about the same exact issue if you could even call it one. Ingredients run out, It happens. I suppose if I was the couple writing this review I would be over the top happy with my refund, free food, and extra gift certificate. As it stands we left paying for more than we received and with a meh view about coming back. Chopped liver we are, and well... I guess even at this place the chef could find a way for liver to taste amazing, so take that as a compliment. This place is worth every penny for the food. The service needs a little tweaking as our experience wasnt good at all.
