This was my first time there. I went with a friend who had been there a number of times. I ordered the Fritatta with wheat toast. It was delicious! The coffee was great and I have to say that they were on top of the refills! The young lady we haad as a server was great. She was extremely pleasant and responsive. We talked for quite a while and she was very patient and was always available just in case we wanted to go for round two. The price was fair and they took cash!! I will definitely go back to experience more of their great food! Parking: This could be a problem once the downtown waked up and gets busy.

Unexpectedly good little restaurant, tucked away below street level. Great menu with some inventive food selections. Dishes are almost always tasty, well-prepared and served in a timely manner. Wait staff are courteous and attentive. Prices are relatively reasonable. Probably the best fine dining restaurant Ive found in San Marcos.

I gave it 4 stars simply because we went there based off photos/menu online just to find out they didnt have eggs Benedict as listed. When we asked about it the staff basically said oh we havent offered that in several years so if thats what youre going for choose, elsewhere. Other than everything was great!

Very good food, especially the appetizers! We went for happy hour (after3pm) and got half off on the beer battered asparagus and crispy brussel sprouts. Both are highly recommended. Good beer selection, and the margaritas were solid as well. The mediocre air conditioning was one of my only meh moments. It was pretty warm, but its summer in Texas, and I didnt die, haha. Overall, a nice experience.

Literally had the best service, ever! This restaurant opened up their second front door to fit our stroller in and accommodated our party of 10 with ease on a Saturday morning. The food was amazing. I had the biscuits and gravy, the jalapeño cream gravy was killer. Our party also ordered the waffles, chicken sandwiches and all were delicious. The bloody Mary s were the best I ve ever had and my husband loved his spicy one. I d eat here again and again. The server was the best. She was helpful with the kids and our ordering.

Usually always good food . Today I think a local hockey team came in to eat. I think they left a puck on a plate and I got it. I ate everything off the top of the biscuit. I told the waitress and was offered another biscuit. I had already finished. My fork just bounced off the top of the biscuit. Was told that all they could do was just another biscuit. Did not want much , except to hopefully have the kitchen not put a super hard burnt biscuit on a plate and basically say oh well.

My husband and I were visiting from out of town and looking for a spot to have brunch when I found this cafe online. We waiting 45 minutes to be seated which was not a major issue. The waitress took our drink order then returned to take our order. First my husband ordered the steak and eggs, she returned and said they were out. Second time, he ordered the chicken, she said they re out! This was very frustrating. If you re out of items, you should tell the guest immediately and they can decide rather to stay or leave. Unfortunately we chose to leave as we can t eat pork. Found a great spot across the street! It all worked out for the best!

Place is old, but not in a good way. Dingy bathrooms and as a whole, didnt seem that clean to me. The wine selection was bad and over priced (they are actually trying to push whitehaven for more than $40 a bottle) and our server had no idea what the house wine brand was. And no attention to the small details that make a place great rather than ok. They were out of items, we ordered the queso and the chips looked like cheap store-bought. Plus we clearly got the bottom of the bag because our plate was a pile of crumbs rather than chips. Entrees were over cooked. Not sure why I keep hearing people talk about this place. In my book its a C- at best.

Like all other restaurants after the pandemic, make sure and look at the menu for pricing. Nothing here is uncompetitive, but it seems expensive by the old standards. Facility is a nice old building on the downtown square.

Upon attending the restaurant for our anniversary, my spouse and I were disheartened by the behavior of the Manager or General Manager on duty. Their noticeable impairment, discernible through olfactory cues and visible demeanor, was not only disruptive to our experience but also demonstrated a lack of professionalism. The Managers discourteous interactions extended beyond us to their own staff, creating an unwelcome atmosphere. Such conduct is concerning, particularly in a food environment, raising questions about the establishments commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful workplace. As someone with a background in health and safety, I am deeply disappointed by this occurrence and feel compelled to report it to the relevant authorities for further investigation. Instances of substance use in a professional setting not only jeopardize the well-being of staff but also pose potential risks to patrons. It is my sincere hope that corrective measures are taken swiftly to ensure the integrity of the establishment is restored.

I usually have an outstanding experience here, both from their food and the service. Unfortunately, today was the exception. Our server left much to be desired. First, I ordered coffee with cream. The cream did not arrive with the coffee, and did not arrive for a very long time. Then, my friend who ordered hot tea was told, there were no clean cups for tea, and that they needed to be washed, before he could serve her tea. We ordered and he did not write anything down. He came back 15 minutes later and asked a second time what we ordered. When our order arrived, my side of ham and berries with my waffle did not arrive. I asked him for my side of ham, which I never got. I asked him to remove the ham from the bill. My friend and I were both surprised at this lack of good service. Perhaps they need to invest a little in training new staff, to maintain customer satisfaction.

We came here for a work function, and I was a little apprehensive as Ive been by here before and didnt really get the sense it was a place I would enjoy. When Im wrong, I will admit it. I was absolutely wrong. From the getting you get when you enter, the bartender is offering up tasty drinks, and the manager is giving up advice on what to eat while we wait for the rest of our party to arrive. Now lets talk food. I only got one picture, but I will tell you the rest of it looked just as good as my steak. Next to a good hamburger, I love a great steak. I dont normally order them because a lot of places dont know how to season or cook them. Let me tell you, this place knows how to season a steak! This was one of the best steaks Ive ever eaten. It was juicy, flavorful, and absolutely amazing. My only critique was that the outside was charred a bit much, making it harder to cut. My coworkers had the meatloaf and string chicken. They loved it as well. The only reason there was food left on the plate was because we were so full. I truly cant wait to come back with my family and try some other items. Chicken and waffles looked really good!

This place is in a historic building. It has a cool ambiance but the room way in the back is humid and has a funny smelly smell. We were going to be sitting there but my husband and I quickly asked for different seating and we were sat in the middle room which had much better ventilation and was dry. The food was delicious. The spinach and artichoke dip could have been better. I didn t like that I had to pay an extra $1.50 for fruit on my French toast and extra $2.00 for a scoop of cream. My server just asked if I wanted fruit and cream but my husband s waffle came with it included. I m also used to having powdered sugar on my French toast. We went for breakfast today and am leaving severely disappointed. We were told when we arrived that it was a 20-25 minute wait for a table (after trying to join the virtual waitlist, which wasn t working), and ended up waiting over an hour for a table. We were told that we could go upstairs to the bar for an appetizer and drink, so we did. We waited about 5 minutes for a person who worked there to walk in and when he did, he just went behind the bar and told us to let him know if we wanted a drink. We ordered 2 mimosas that barely tasted like anything. When we finally got seated at our table we tried to order the spinach and artichoke dip but were told it was out (fine by us), so we ordered the hatch chili queso which was pretty good. My boyfriend ordered the hill country breakfast with extra bacon, and I ordered the pesto pasta with a salad (that it came with). After about 45 minutes his food came out, minus the bacon. The sausage tasted like Jimmy Dean and the eggs were sub par. My food, on the other hand, did not come out. After about 5-10 minutes we asked a waitress to check on it, and a few minutes later our server came out to tell me that they were out of pesto and my meal could not be made. They asked if I wanted anything else, but my boyfriend was almost done with his food and we had already wasted 2 hours there. We reminded him that we were supposed to get a side of bacon (thinking I could at least eat that), and the waiter had forgotten to put the order in. They brought out 2 slices a while later that were very inconsistently cooked. We were never checked on, our waters were never refilled (which was extra disappointing because the AC was not working and it was very hot in there) and struggled to get one person to help us. They comped the queso and gave us 20% off my boyfriend s food but never actually apologized. If I could leave less than 1 star, I would. Overall I was very disappointed with their service and will not be returning any time soon.

The service was incredibly slow, especially for being a weekday with only a few tables. Took almost an hour to get our food. The food was nothing special, and they were out of several items on the menu. The location on the square is the only good thing about it. Take your money and go elsewhere.

Food was alright, pretty expensive for what it is tbh. Tomato soup didn t taste homemade, it was super tangy & kinda hurt my throat the way artificial tomato soup taste. Was happy to try this place but the 100$ for 2 meals & 2 sides were too much. Not even good sized portions. I will say it s a good location. But none of the workers were welcoming really. Good to try, but wouldn t come back.

This is a review of the new cocktail bar. Not sure who the customer is supposed to be. not a student place but not that welcoming to parent types either. Needs some work. Nice idea. Had no food.

We were seated immediately, but waited a while to get waited on & another while to get our order. The Roasted Garlic Hummus was not garlicky, but I think the veggies had garlic salt on them. Our sandwiches were better, the Holy Aioli & the beef burger, tasty & well-prepared. The atmosphere is kind of dark, but the worst was the restrooms, with the toilet & sink on different levels of short stairs. They re an accident waiting to happen. Further, the diaper table had a filthy cover on it. I d read the good reviews, but overall was disappointed.

Just walked in and we were told there would either be a wait or we could get full service at the bar. When asked roughly how long the wait was, the man up front rolled his eyes and impatiently answered while throwing his hand up. We left immediately and dont plan on coming back. Im not paying the ridiculous prices for that kind of service. Yall have gone downhill.

Went to the Upstairs bar to have some mimosas before brunch. Place is neat and very New Orleans/ French Quarter like. Great ambience and bartender was good. Didnt eat downstairs but definitely want to go back to eat dinner and have late night cocktails upstairs. Great spot.

Overall, really disappointed with the food. The asparagus fries just tasted like fried dough and the sauce was so thin you really couldnt taste it. Also had the eggplant sandwich which tasted like tomato sauce and cheese (LOTS of cheese). I wish the dishes would focus on the flavor of the vegetables rather than covering them up. My husband had the cottage pie which had a good, meaty flavor, but I would say the portion was quite small (it didnt even fill the dish it was served in) and the server didnt mention the soup or salad it was supposed to come with. Luckily he asked if the dish was supposed to come with something else when another waitress brought the food out. He got the sweet potato curried soup; good, but a little sweet. Between the disappointing food and not being offered the side my husbands meal was supposed to come with, we wont be back.

Its like we were transported to an alternate dimension which mimiced a slice of heaven. Each dish we ordered was superb and beyond perfect. We highly recommend the beer bread, the meatloaf, and the snickerdoodle bread pudding. Jack the Fire Dog is also an incredibly tasty beverage.

I went here with my family and we feasted. It was absolutely amazing food and dessert. We shared the spinach artichoke dip which was very scoop able. For the entree, I had the pasta primavera which was the perfect portion and had a very diverse and delicious flavor. For dessert we shared the flan and brownie with ice cream. The brownie was very rich and made with dark chocolate. It was an unconventional flan served in a circular shape and shorter but still very good.

Our dining wasn t a pleasant experience. It s a very busy place which is fine but their staff seemed frazzled by it. Our waiter was clearly not having a good day. Whenever we asked for something his response was kinda snappy with I ll get to it, as a response. Our appetizers, soup, and meals were not hot, slightly warm at best. Our queso and soup was barely warm at all. And the soup just wasn t good. There shouldn t be a sourish taste in cream of mushroom soup. I didn t finish my entree. Not because I was full but because it wasn t enjoyable. The food wasn t salted or seasoned, everything was bland. And it was expensive to boot. We won t be back.

Man the food here is such good quality and the atmosphere here is great. It s a farm to table restaurant, very fresh tasting food. The flavors are immaculate too. They have a bar area and you can order many different types of cocktails. We got mojitos and they hit the spot with all these hot days we have been having. Overall 100/10 recommend this restaurant.

Possibly the worst service we have ever experienced. Had to ask for our check from the host bc our server had disappeared. Host said he was sorry but it s been a crazy day . No offer to make it right. Pecan chicken was sickly sweet and breading fell off. Way overrated. Won t be back.

We had salads and each got a cup of tomato basil soup. The soup was a little heavy on the pepper but otherwise had a good flavor and consistency. It came in a cute crock that had a lid which came in handy keeping in hot while enjoying my beet and goat cheese salad. The hibiscus tea was sooo refreshing. I think I drank 3 glasses. Our greeting was very pleasant and we were sat quickly. Our server was very kind and attentive. She made several suggestions and checked in on us frequently. Definitely not handicap accessible unless you plan on eating outside and not using the bathroom!

Decided to give San Marcos a closer look. Dropped into The Root Cellar for Sunday brunch with the pups. (Dog friendly patio). Nice menu and well prepared scratch cooking. The chicken and waffles are spectacular. Service was great. May want to invest in misters with this Texas heatwave. Will definitely be stopping back to sample the shrimp and grits.

We are from out of town and this place looked nice. It took forever for our waitress to acknowledge us. We started with the beer bread which was like french toast but dipped in beer. I do not recommend it. I also had the cottage pie. The meat was so salty l couldnt eat it. I was only able to eat the potatoes and veggies. The place itself is really cool. But the food we had was not good.

Uproot, the bar above Root Cellar is amazing. Finally found a good craft cocktail bar in San Marcos, and I ve been hoping for one since 2010! I m pretty sure Callie (the bartender) is a wizard! The drinks she made us were insanely good. Best take on an espresso martini I ve ever had and the Lavender French 75 was great as well. Highly recommend Uproot if you are in the San Marcos area and want a good stiff drink that isn t made with Fireball, Screwball, or well liquor!

I recently visited this restaurant for a birthday celebration, but the experience didnt meet my expectations. The food was overpriced and lacked flavor, especially the vegan beet burger which was tasteless. The accompanying chips were also mediocre. The overall atmosphere of the restaurant fell short of what I had hoped for. Despite the high prices, it lacked sophistication. Additionally, the bathroom had an unpleasant odor, which didnt contribute to a pleasant dining experience. The service was disappointing too, with slow service times. While the waiter demonstrated exceptional friendliness and amiability, the delays in receiving food and drinks were frustrating. Overall, I wouldnt confidently recommend this restaurant for a memorable dining experience.

Was a little disappointed bc I saw most of the review posts are bout their lovely breakfast/brunch menu.... that someone mentioned is all day long, which is not true at all, they have a dinner menu that starts at 4pm. The dinner menu didnt have a lot of options for me but I settled on the green hatch chili queso, I didnt see any green chilie but it was still good. Also got the pasta bacon carbonara which was beautiful looking and pretty good. I will definitely come back and update my rating once Ive had their breakfast goodness.
