Wake the Dead is arguably one of the best coffee houses in San Marcos. The staff are an asset - theyre really friendly and always remember my order, the service is always great. The coffee is consistently excellent. I love how they host daily events, farmers market and sell local products.

Thoroughly enjoyed our first visit to Wake the Dead Coffee House, having a Latte, ultra fresh Iced Tea and a dessert of a yummy shared Lemon Muffin. (A side note: I am impressed that you have Stevia sweetener! ) The staff shared with us about the various Music played there and introduced us to the cozy room where the bands play and your various events take place. ACOUSTRIX (Mark Stafford and Scott Martin) are looking forward to play for you in the near future. They have a great repertoire of Classic Rock and Country tunes that lend themselves well to the Coffee House environment. PS. Mich should be receiving specifics about the band from Scott. This is a uniquely eclectic place with no full kitchen, but they have some great sandwich offerings, soup too, I think, even Lox and Bagel! And a full case of sweets ! Also, the first Saturday each month, there are special vendors outside as you enter the gate and stroll through a garden/terrace area to go inside. I felt as tho I entering a neighbors through the back of the house as I passed by the line of vendors. There was one lady, who especially caught my eye, who was selling beautiful errings. We will return to maybe concentrate specifically on the goods available for purchase. Anyway, a fun place not to miss for many reasons.

Ok so Ive loved wake the dead for years. Its a San Marcos staple. Atmosphere/environment (both inside and outside) are amazing. My go to place to work or study. Food? Great. Service? ALWAYS on point... My only thing is... The prices have gotten out. of. hand. I mean, I understand that inflation is happening, its a thing. Everyone talks about how Starbucks is expensive, and I understand that prices at a local shop are probably gonna be a bit more because they have to support their own... And Ill still try and support wake the dead as much as Im financially able to but its getting to a point where I dont think I can afford it anymore. At all. The pic below .. that coffee was $8 and some change. For the SMALLEST cup. Thats wiiiiild. Truly. . Idk, anyway, I love wake the dead but the prices have gotten a bit insane.

I usually like this place, but the white male Barista that was working around 10AM this Saturday morning, 3/2/24, was condescending, inconsiderate, and damaged my personal property. When our drinks were called out, we could not hear from the next room, so he brought them to us commenting with annoyance Usually we call out the drinks rather than bring them to customers as if we were not aware of how coffee shops of this type work. Additionally, he nearly knocked over the table I was sitting at in order to clean the window behind me. The spray bottle he was using for the window must have contained bleach, because when we left, my boyfriend noted that the back of my black shirt was discolored with reddish splotches that were not there when we arrived. Why bleach was being used on a surface typically cleaned with ammonia is also a mystery to me, but THIS is why employees shouldnt be doing cleaning duties within the personal space of customers. The window should not have been an urgent enough task that it could not wait for me to leave that seat. Now I have to invest in clothing dye or throw out one of my favorite garments because of his crass inconsideration.

My mom and I stopped in because we moved into the neighborhood recently and were curious about this place . It was exactly what I had imagined, its a good place for studying for finals and it has a very laid back feel. Big comfy Lounges and nice quiet spots for maybe a party of 2 or just a party of 1 . They also have am outside seating area that is Dog friendly. I order an Iced Chai Latte w a pastry that was like an almond joy but as a pastry w vegan chocolate. It was good, but it just falls apart as soon as u take a bite . Wont get that on my next visit. My mom ordered coffee and she said it was very good , fresh ! She ended up buying us a bracelet each , they have a little section for hand made jewelry and it was very pretty . Reasonably priced as well. The girls that were at the counter and register were very welcoming and had good vibes . Wheelchair accessibility: They have wheelchair access and handicapped parking available .

The coffee was okay, little too sweet. The staff wasnt very helpful, I informed the cashier that it was my first time, so I asked for suggestions, and he seemed annoyed by the question. Basically, he told me whatever I was in the mood for. So come in and know what you want as the staff cant be bothered with proper customer service. However, the gentleman who brought our bagel was super sweet, and the bagel was delicious.

The only reason I would come back is for the scenery. The environment is so cute!! Very quiet and relaxing. On the other hand, my coffee tasted like bad espresso, aka a dead shot. I m a barista so I know what a dead shot tastes like as my former boss made us try it to show how bad it is the sandwich I got was good in theory, but the cheese was so strong I couldn t eat it. So, I paid $20.00 for 2 drinks and a sandwich with no meat just for me to throw the coffee away and give the sandwich to my boyfriend. I am also currently job searching, so I asked if they were hiring. When I asked the owner, all I got from her was no we re not. In a monotone voice and then she just looked down. And as I was ordering, she was crossing her arms and staring into my soul I swear I was so uncomfortable talking to her. The other employee who was a guy was super friendly and you can tell he takes pride in what he does! But I just can t with the dry personality, especially when your style has so much personality. Anyways, even if she said yes in the same monotone voice, I would ve walked away and said never mind.

Wake the Dead is the best coffee shop in central Texas, hands down. Even better than Austin coffee shops. The toddy is my favorite, but really all the drinks are phenomenal and they have such a huge selection, I feel like itd be difficult finding something you dont like on the menu. The pastries are locally made and I highly recommend the cookies. Weather permitting I suggest enjoying their gorgeous patio, but all the spots inside are really nice as well. Ample plugs, comfortable seats, neat local art on the walls usually for sale, and a nice diverse selection of music, too. Been coming here for... oh god over a decade?? Whats also great is they really try to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment there. Ive witnessed the staff kick out creeps and stand up to people trying to bully/harass their customers and staff. Theyve held fundraising events for members of the community, as well as letting various organizations and groups meet or hold their own events there. Whether youre just driving through on the way to Wimberly or staying in town for an extended visit, definitely stop by Wake the Dead! Damn fine coffee. And yes, to the folks like my dad out there, they do have just black coffee, and its ALSO some of the best Ive ever had. Worth it to come by just for that.

Rating: 5

Best coffee shop in San Marcos, if not the entire Hill Country! The staff are all knowledgeable and very helpful, whether youre really into the intricacies of making coffee or someone who just wants a nice simple cup o joe they have everything you could want. I have yet to find an iced coffee or cold brew anywhere thats as good as Wake the Deads iced toddys, which you can get with an extra shot of concentrate if you need the extra caffeine boost. Their baked goods are made by local bakeries and are some of the best (and biggest) Ive had in my decade or so living here. Their food can seem pricey, but keep in mind they dont have a full kitchen, and there are plenty of affordable options that dont break the bank (I get bagels or the chips and salsa pretty frequently). Anytime they have a soup youre interested in trying - get it!! Theyre made from scratch and make the perfect lunch especially when paired with a half sandwich. The most GORGEOUS back patio thanks to continued hard work from local gardeners over the years, and a cozy/inviting indoor area with walls usually covered in local artists works. The staff are all super sweet, more than willing to explain stuff or make recommendations, and I especially appreciate how the staff has supported customers who are getting creeped on/harassed by weirdos there. Myself and others have stories of the staff coming to our defense when some creepy dude tries to hit on us or says something really out of line, I truly feel safe coming here. A LOT of the small amount of negative reviews are flatout lies, btw. Often someone will come into the shop acting like they know better than the baristas, like theyre more important than any other customer, etc, and be less than pleased when nobody - staff nor regular patrons - play into their ego trips. Often the negative reviews are left by people who treat the staff and other patrons rudely, or who bring in outside food (NEVER EVER understood why anyone would think thats okay anywhere, pretty sure even Starbucks wouldnt allow that), or who use the patio/wifi without buying even a $2 coffee. A private business is not a public park, and a place that makes/sells food and drink isnt your personal kitchen. Not sure why some people dont get that. ANYWAY visit this place if you havent yet! AND TIP THEM WELL!!! Best damn cold brew in the great state of Texas I tell you what!

I got an iced chai tea latte and it was flavorless and watered down. The pastries were also very mid tasting and disappointing. I was excited to try this cafe since it has an interesting theme but the drinks and food are not worth it. I would rather visit The Coffee Bar, Mochas and Javas, or Summer Moon. I won t be visiting again.

The coffee was good. I had an almond milk latte with honey, and I was pleased with it. The staff were friendly, esp the guy making our coffees. The location is good with plenty of parking and most tables were available. The only issue was the lighting. Some of the colors they use really bother my eyes. If youre sensitive to certain lights like I am, you may have some issues.

Love this place. I come most days. Today I realized my coffee was much more expensive than my partners and realized they charge $1.75 for plant milks. Thats absolutely ridiculous. They are more shelf stable and not more expensive. Thats more than any other coffee shop charges. The waffle cream pies are so good.

Really neat to look at all the different things they have on the walls. They even have a outside area you can sit and drink your coffee. Awesome place yall.

Kitchy art cheeky baristas love the vibe here. I live in Canyon Lake TX this is a great geo mid point location for Austin-San Antonio meeting spots for friends that are spread out. I have never eaten at Wake The Dead and cant comment on the food. This is my go to coffee house because I love the ever changing artwork. I love the Tim Burton style garden sculpture. There is a stage where there are musical performances. My favorite area is the library, its very cozy with a sofa and various size tables. The 2 negative things are on the table they post a notice that tables are for paying customers and to not bring in outside food. As a former business owner I would never post something like this. It can be dealt with on a case by case basis, employees can politely advise that they serve food and to please refrain from bringing outside food in. Assume positive intent and directly deal with the situation. The notice is an avoidance tactic so employees dont have to interact with clients. The other thing is the to go cups when you are dining in-coffee culture has changed I understand the reasons for it, however I truly believe that a ceramic coffee cup elevates the experience. If I owned a funky spot like this I would create a collection of cups from a thrift store of various sizes and design motifs. By allowing the customers to select their desired cup upon entering offers a very unique interactive experience that is memorable and will create conversations in the community.

Wake the Dead is not a coffee shop. Its a coffee experience. The atmosphere and general vibe boasts a place to come for a casual lounge experience while getting some top notch caffeine. I visited Wake the Dead, while visiting Texas for the first time. My hosts couldnt say more about how much they loved this local staple. The goth/punk, macabre decoration is a delight. And theres artwork all over from real artists that are available to purchase. They also apparently host events and are integrated into the local community. As a New Yorker in San Marcos for the first time, I was really really impressed. I was made a half chai half matcha latte and it was easily in my top three experiences while visiting the state. Next time Im in Texas, I would love to just hang out there in the evening, sipping on a glass of wine (which they also sell. Again. But lounge vibes. And I love it) And the people who work there are friendly, kind and diligent. Several weeks after the fact, I called to purchase one of the prints Id seen on the wall. Whoever was managing their Instagram account helped me track down the artist and got me what I needed. It was the easiest thing Id ever done across state lines. I really Appreciated every aspect of my Wake The Dead experience.

Been here several times. Beautiful area, great food, and when the building finally opened back up, gorgeous interior. The exterior was also beautiful. It gave me Secret Garden vibes. Theres a small nature park not too far from WTD, which made for some really good coffee before a walk. Reasonably priced, out of the way enough that its rarely too crowded, the vibes are overall fantastic. There was even a few pieces of art on display to buy!
