GOOD BYE HAYDEN It was close to 2:00 PM when my young son and I walked into the Alamo Heights location of The Hayden. We were passed our lunch hour and very hungry. We are regular costumers, and the waitress kindly said hello and took our order. I ordered a seared salmon salad with a beer and my son had a cheese burger with no mustard. Little did we know that the next few moments were going to be hell: We waited and waited and finally the waitress comes over and tells me that she had written our order but had somehow lost it and wanted me to order again. She was very embarrassed and I understood , so we ordered again. The food came and it looked like the Janitor was cooking that day: My salad was horrible. Indeed, It was not even a salad! The seared salmon salad at the Hayden consisted of delicious crunchy lettuce accompanied with baked Brussels sprouts and a seared salmon fillet on top among other ingredients. Instead, got a bowl of overcooked green beens with over fried cut potatoes that were old. On top of this rubbish was a salmon fillet that I did not dare to try. My son s cheese burger tasted bitter because of old tomatoes. So, I rejected the so called salmon salad and kept the cheeseburger because my son was starving at this point. What a disappointment!

I have mixed feelings about this restaurant. While the food can be very good, my last visit was disappointing due to the cleanliness. The floors, tables, and bathroom all needed a thorough cleaning, and the menus felt greasy. When we sat outside, none of the tables were wiped down, leaving my pants dirty. The waiter didn t clean the table, and management seemed indifferent, despite being present. This was the second time I found the restaurant not clean. I won t be returning, as I can t trust a kitchen that operates in such a visibly dirty environment.

Leila was an amazing server! Definitely had good recommendations on food and drinks. Appetizers: Cheese Fries - a good amount of cheese and chili. Pimento Cheese - had a creamy but spicy taste and pared well with the chips! Food: Elaine s Big Salad - enough to share 2 plates and was fresh with a good amount of chicken! Vegetable Chowder Soup - Tasted very homey and hearty. Chili - once again, felt very homey. Best time to come would definitely be happy hour for the appetizers!

The people are exceptional, the food is to die for, and the vibe is a modern diner. It feels like Jerry Seinfeld might be here talking to George, but Jerry would have driven a Tesla here. It s perfect. They do brunch, lunch, and a casual dinner date extremely well. The lox, chicken sandwich, meatloaf, and Elaine s big salad are to die for. Don t sleep on the margaritas, in moderation. Thank you, Hayden. Dietary restrictions: They can accommodate vegetarian options. Parking: Open with ramps Kid-friendliness: Kids are welcome, but this is not fast food

First time, definitely not my last time! Came in for the fried chicken sandwich, which happens to be 1 of 8 regional winners special. This southwest chicken sandwich hit it on all levels. Chicken was juicy and tender, yet crunchy. Pablano was flavorful and full of gooey pimento cheese. Bread was soft and was not too big. Ranch spread added even more flavor, but did not overwhelm the sandwich. Oh! How could I forget the bacon! Everything is better with bacon! The fries were crispy, with just enough salt. I do not like cold, room temperature fries. Even room temperature, I could not stop eating them. No sauce was needed.

Whoa. Whoooooa. Ok... let me take a breathe. This food was *chefs kiss phenomenal. Im a super particular guy, always have been. I HATE vegetable medley in any form. Have literally never had a bite since I was maybe 7 years old, so were talking nearly 30 years now... so Im gonna start with the side order of the soup of the day. It was a vegetable soup. We ordered a mixture of dishes and I opted for that because I figured my girlfriend would eat it. When we got our food it was so so good, and Ill get to that... but this soup. I was like ok, this Omelet is so fluffy and delicious that Id be disrespectful and silly not to just try one bite of this soup... brothers, sisters... this soup was so good I nearly got emotional. Seriously. They may have singlehandedly turned my vegetable medley hating days around. Texture... taste... temperature... WOW. I cant possibly say enough here. Now as for that Omelet... that was my main dish, and it was probably the best omelet I think Ive ever had. Near PERFECT. No burnt cheese, no overcooked eggs, great amount of fillings (barbacoa) and that slightly warm roasted tomatillo salsa on top? This made my day. I feel like a new man after this meal. Im writing this sitting in the booth staring at my mostly empty plate dumbfounded by its quality. Some reviews state a hang up on price and I get it, everything is a bit pricey these days right? I personally didnt mind the price all things considered. It was 45 for the both of us and I left full. Even though Id love to be able to eat here once a week, its priced well enough that we will be trying to find some consistency in our presence here. We loved everything. Our server Robbie was such a sweet guy, the manager we spoke to on the floor was warm and welcoming, the atmosphere... I saw so many folks that seemed to be regulars interacting with one another. What a spot. Please please try them out. Ask questions if youre not familiar with some of the dishes, they will take care of you! And if youre an omelet person... well, get ready for a good one.

By far the best resturant Ive been to in a while. I feel like dining out has been kind of a let down-BUT!! not here. The service and food Ive experienced here is, in my opinion the whole reason to dine out rather than cook at home. The server (Robbie ) was friendly and and knowledgeable about the menu. We ordered: chicken Latke waffle ,vegetable soup (soup of the day) , barbacoa omelet, and chai iced tea. Everything was delicious and the portions are large (I wish I came here hungrier! ). I cant wait to come back and try all the dishes I didnt order this time around.

Bottom line is four stars, because we loved a lot but not all, and $55 is just too much for a lunch of a potato appetizer, two sodas, and two soup-and-sandwich specials. The food was good (a few items incredible, even), server wonderful, and the restaurant comfortable with a terrific sense of humor, but everything wasnt so consistently amazing that wed race back at that price and certainly not with the entire family. We were grateful it happened, but we were actually wrongfully lured in by Google Maps. The Hayden came up in a search for German Restaurant. I shouldve dug deeper, because two reviews talked about German Potato Salad (which isnt identified as such on the menu and didnt look like German potato salad in the reviewers photos). This isnt a German restaurant but rather more of a gastropub / modern take on traditional Jewish dishes. It was an exciting option, so we went for it and frankly, glad we did! The Latke was not what I expected, served like a piece of pie rather than small coins, but everything (texture, taste, temperature, and toppings) worked so wonderfully. Neither of us liked the tomato bisque as it seemed to have an almost tobacco(?) flavor to it... not to be crass, but there was a smoky, dried leaf taste to the soup... not our preference. That said, they graciously replaced our tomato for the matzo ball, which was a much better choice and had a delicious broth flavor... Grandma Stellas recipe is a hit with us! The pastrami sandwich was a tasty combo of ingredients but made the bottom bread soggy and included some larger slabs of fat, which isnt for me. But nothing couldve prepared us for the grilled cheese sandwich... BEST GRILLED CHEESE EVER! I dont understand... weve literally had grilled cheese all over the world and tried so many grilled cheese restaurants, but this one takes the cake. The bread was perfectly soft and crispy but no area so hard it hurts your mouth. The mixed cheeses somehow simultaneously tasted like two separate items and yet one item combined... AND they stayed soft and gooey from the first bite to the last... I dont get it, either. So, maybe we wont bring the kids, but Mom and I might sneak back for a Grilled Cheese now and then. So Id say its a little too casual for a formal date night and too pricey for a family night out, but if youre a tourist already spending more freely, want something different with a loved one, or trying to find something new for visitors, make sure to stop by the Hayden... and get a side of Grilled Cheese.

One of us ordered a burger with a gluten free bun due to an allergy and we made sure to double check 3 times that it was gluten free. Our waiter assured us that the bun was gluten free so she ate it. Once we finished we checked one more time and were told by a different waiter that the bread we got was not in fact gluten free. Our waiter then told us he assumed the one he gave us was gluten free. Extremely irresponsible to not double check on an allergen with the kitchen when we asked about it three (3) times. Allergies are not something you can just assume about. Bad service

Finally had a chance to try this place out today. Atmosphere and vibes are nice. Decided on the chicken and latke waffle, lox + scramble, and a single pancake. -Chicken and Latke Waffle: Chicken was lacking in flavor (and size) Latke waffle gets a point for creativity. Good but not great. -Lox scramble w/potatoes: Eggs a touch overcooked but potatoes were nice. -Pancake was the star of the show. Nice and fluffy but needed a little more crisp. One thing I did notice was when getting the check...I noticed a mixed drink tax (ordered a bloody mary, because brunch). First time ive ever seen that on a bill.

Empty tables but had to pressure the gate-keeper to give us an empty table. Was told we re out of chicken & bacon. Ordered a sandwich & a salad ( substituted chicken for meat). Bill came to $60 for a sandwich & potato chips, two non-alcoholic drinks from the bar, and their chicken salad. Tip to pay was at 22% moved to 20%: final luncheon came to $70.. never again!

Their mimosa kit adds a splash of fun to your morning, while the biscuits and gravy offer a comforting twist on a classic. We went for brunch, and we started with the Fish Dip. It was served with homemade potato chips and fresh vegetables. Delicious! Our entrees were the Chicken Biscuit which was definitely shareable, and the pastrami and Swiss sandwich. The two jalapeño cheddar biscuits were glazed with a honey butter which was a nice touch. The chicken was breaded perfectly and was flavorful. It also had a pimento cheese spread and pickled jalapeños. The side was their breakfast potatoes which were also scrumptiously seasoned not salty at all. Next, came the Pastrami and Swiss sandwich. This has to be the best pastrami sandwich I ve ever tasted. The slices of pastrami were thick, the sauerkraut added the perfect marriage to the melty cheese. This was served with a delicious slaw. I was quite pleased that the slaw wasn t sweet. We also tried their chai latte, and if you like the taste the cardamom, this is your go-to. It did not disappoint. I can t wait to go back to try their other signature dishes!

Great food, VERY large servings, but very expensive. Theres also an extra 2% fee for Kitchen Love added to every check. Weve been here a couple of times. Its really good food. The serving sizes are VERY generous, but they can lower the prices by decreasing the serving sizes. Most of the people in here are taking half of their food to go. The prices are just ridiculous. The service is fantastic and friendly - no complaints there. However, it gets very noisy, especially on the weekends. Its not as bad for lunch on a weekday, but still kinda noisy. These prices are from the fall of 2023 and the spring of 2024: * Spicy Chicken Salad - OMG, the chicken is like crack. So moist and spicy. ($16.99) * Omelet - The eggs are kinda dry and lacking cheese. When the waitress asked how things were, we told her. The manager comped half off the price. ($14.99) * Single Pancake - Comes with compote and almond slices. ($8.99) * Shiner Bock Draft - $7 before 3 pm on a Monday. * Iced Tea - $3.49 on a Monday before 3 pm. * Side of Toast - $2.99. I was surprised with an extra charge on my bill. It was labeled kitchen love. It was 2% of the total check. This might sound like a small cost, but its not cool when you are surprised with this added cost. When I asked what the kitchen love fee was, the waitress told me it was for the staff in the back kitchen. She offered to remove it, and I said yes. (Kitchen love is 2%) The bottom line is that they have great food, and great service, but the prices are just insane.

The Reuben, Ted Danson, and a pancake meal took over 45 minutes to be made, one can only hope that during the typical rush, that the wait times arent worse. The sandwich came out with the bread soggy and the homemade salt and vinegar chips were stale and not flavored. The drinks were OK, but for the price it was kind of disappointing. I will say our server was very kind, and talking with the owner after our visit, he took our comments to heart. So I have faith that things will be better next time.

I like this place but I am highly disappointed to see the tipping culture at its worst at this establishment. It is ridiculous and a good experience is ruined by the absurd tipping suggestions. 1. They sneak in a fee and call it kitchen love to avoid paying their staff proper wages. 2. Their suggested tipping starts at 20%! Tipping starts at 15%. 3. They suggest these high tips after hidden fees on the after taxes total. Tips are not calculated on post tax totals. My suggestion: Please pay your staff a fair wage and allow the consumer to tip fairly. Raise your prices on each product if you have to, but dont sneak in fees and start you suggestion at a fair 15%.

Ordered the crispy fish sandwich, it s time to change the oil in that deep fryer!! The battered fish was so brown I can taste the old oil. My matcha drink with oat milk and honey was priced $4.99 on the menu but I was charged $5.99. If it wasn t for the great server I would rate this a 2 star. Great atmosphere and good server, not so much on the food not worth the high price they charged.

Food is always great here. My little one and I share the Larry David and he always eats most of my sandwich. My husband has ordered the chicken and latke waffle and a key lime pie for dessert. Loved everything about it. However, I am going to deduct three stars though for the service and because the last time I went, I ordered my usual, the Larry David, and they brought me out the simple smoked whitefish on a bagel and when I asked them where the lox and beets were, they apologized and said they would grab it but never came back. Instead, they went and helped others around me and stayed in the back talking to other coworkers (there was only four other tables). On many occasions, I ve had to remind them no ice in our drinks (they put ice in it anyways). But this last time was completely unacceptable. It s too bad because we are willing to overlook the ice and bad service because the food is that good. But when you ask for something and then they charge $20 for something you didn t get that s enough for me to not only write this review but let others know of it as well on this platform and others. Yes, I did let my server know about this as she was quick to collect the bill and remove the charge (not even an apology was issued) and she said she would call her manager but he never showed up. So we left. So very disappointing. Do better, Hayden.

We were so hungry and found this restaurant after two failed attempts to go other places and what a gem! We thoroughly enjoyed the Celery Soda, Latke appetizer followed by Matzoball soup and the Cod Sandwich plate with delicious potato salad (banana peppers in potato salad! Amazing!) Felt exactly as described on their website, a Jewish deli with a Tex-Mex twist and we cannot wait to come back.

Was supposed to hit up another place, but the wait was 45 min at least. Decided to try the place on a whim since it was just me. Was able to walk in and sit where I wanted and they were cool with it. I ordered the Brussel sprouts and I was not let down, they had that crispiness and scent to draw you in. Though a little undercooked; they were great to start with. Also hit this place up for happy hour, they have some good choices from what I read. I decided on the barbacoa stroganoff for the entree. Though not a normal dish to find in the area, I wasnt let down. The woman tending to me told of the creaminess and it was just as she described. I was asked for a dessert after, but finished with the domestic craft beer. Try it out if you find yourself waiting almost an hour.

10/9/22. It s been almost two years and still feel pressed about this experience. It looks like no amount of sleeping on it was going to help me get over this so here s the review with the hopes that things have changed. We arrived an hour before they closed one Sunday. I even asked the hostess are yall still seating people? If not no worries, I know yall close soon and we can go elsewhere and she kindly said come on in! We ll get you seated! but I wished she turned us away. All we wanted to do was try the pancakes as many have raved about them and they came to us practically burnt (which based on other reviews, seems to be a very consistent theme even until present day). This was on top of the extremely poor quality service and bad attitude of our server and horrendous wait times for food to arrive. Quality, wait, and service doesn t justify the price or chill atmosphere. Well maybe you shoulda told your server and they woulda made you new ones? That is clearly a you problem. OK you try that when your server is visibly annoyed and made it obvious they were bothered with your parties existence. We just wanted to pay our check, tip included, and leave. Don t need anyone to reach out as I m reading most reviews and it seems like the blame is equally placed on the patrons. You want us to speak up? Maybe make sure your staff create a welcoming, open, and safe environment to do so and maybe you ll stop seeing this issue? This is just a fair wanting to those who wish to try it out here. Won t ever return or recommend, and haven t.

Been wanting to stop by for $5 tuesday burger for months after recent move to the area. They advertise it very regularly im sure to get people in the door to try tge place. Ive been super excited to finally try it as an entry piont for more follow up on the rest of their menu. Everything looks great online. Dine in 3.19.24. Walked in just before 830 (only going by tge regularly advertised 5-9 tuesday special IG adverts). No greeting for a minute or two even though staff saw us. Finally approached by who looked like a manager/supervisor. Requested booth for 2. Literally the first and only response he gave was as long as its quick, we close in 30 minutes. He seated us and went to another table. I waited standing till he walked back by. I asked him if he didnt want us there. He made no effort to address that concern or make us feel welcome except to simply state tge kitchen would be closing soon. Ordered $5 tuesday burger special (tge sole reason we came per tge very regular IG adverts) along with fries and celery soda. The food and atmosphere were fine, but didnt feel welcomed at all and instead of being excited to return and try more, felt like evidently i should keep trying any of the MANY other great looking options in the area who might actually welcome paying guests and provide a positive experience. Hayden owners/managers, do you actually WANT tge business you are so regularly advertising for within the specific hours ON THE SAME ADVERTISMENTS, or not??? Strange approach. Definitely doesnt make me feel welcome to return and spend my money on the way more expensive menu items tgat otherwise looked well worth the money and experience. Btw, we ate and left before 9pm close, which i am always mindful and considerate of regardless for any establishment i support.

I ve been trying to eat here for a couple of months now, but the Saturday walk-in wait time has been too long. I would definitely make a reservation if coming on a Saturday. That being said, I wasn t super impressed with the food. I had the fried chicken and latke waffle (which is potato). The chicken lacked flavor and the waffle was a little overcooked and small. The brussel sprouts would have been good without the tomato (?). It was a little salty. Our waitress was phenomenal, she very attentive. Prices are reasonable, HOWEVER, I didn t check my receipt until a day later and found what other reviewers mentioned. They did add on 2% for kitchen staff, which I agree, the establishment should just pay them better. Also, the recommended tip is based on the total with taxes AND the 2%, not the food subtotal. I was also charged $10 for a drink that said $9 on the menu. The vibe of the place is nice, it s a decent place to have lunch with a friend. However, based on the billing practices and mediocre food, I probably would not give this place another chance. As for my friend, she comes here often and likes the food.

The concept of the menu is very intriguing but the execution of the food didn t pan out. The food is bland. It s like someone s idea of fancy food but with nothing actually special about the flavor, textures, or presentation. I think it s so egregious because the prices try to reflect the high concept and on top of that, they slip in a percentage fee on top of the regular food prices that s not well advertised up front, And start their tipping at 20%. Speaking of tipping, service was lackluster. Server kept forgetting to refill drinks and actually skipped over our table a couple of times. Atmosphere was great though. Stylish modern decor, lively ambience. The trappings of a great place to dine but illusion doesn t actually warrant the prices being charged.

This is an experience I had dining at The Hayden. Was recommended by a few online reviewers and decided to try something new on a lovely warm Sunday noon. Definitely did not disappoint. It is located at a small plaza right off of Broadway and crossing Hilderbrand Ave, which is the exit off of 281 fwy you want to get off from via highway. It is diagonally across from Jim s restaurant. Parking is decent with about 4 rows of space in front of the restauant where the first row is 20min only, so you may have to walk a short distance during busy hours. Interior decor is modern and hip. It can get quite noisy during busy hours; definitely keeps the vibe lively. Ordered the Chicken & Latke Waffle. It was very well prepared with flavorful seasoning, extremely crispy chicken on the outside. The Latke Waffle is not your typical waffle but stuffed with hash. It actually tastes a little like the tsai bao hong dou bing (vegetable round cake) when I used to eat as a child back in Taiwan. Amazing taste and mix of sweet and savory chicken. Also ordered the Carajillo, which was the perfect dessert after the meal. I d especially like to recommend the staff including Ronaldo, Brittney, and Abigail. Ronaldo has been working there for merely about a month but handles everything so well as if he s already worked for years; he even recognized my military status. Brittney made the Carajillo amazingly in a glass cup with the fiery performance I expected; she was also very friendly and gave good service despite it being extremely busy at that time. Last but not least, Abigail, though not my main waitress, took the time to explain what the Latke waffle was made of when I asked and even recommended some good local places to go in San Antonio; great attitude! Because of the great food and the fabulous services from Ronaldo, Brittney and Abigail, will definitely come back to try more dishes again if in the area. Keep up the great work Ronaldo, Brittney, Abigail and The Hayden!

Love the variety at the Hayden. Food is always fresh. Had the bagel with cream cheese and salmon, red onion and capers. Divine!

They dont have a lot of variety on their menu. I got the meat loaf and it was very, very salty. They do have breakfast all day. Food : 3/5

Weve found our go-to breakfast place. The pancakes are large and fluffy. The biscuits are amazing. My wife had the build your own omelet, and she really enjoyed it. The potatoes were crispy and well seasoned, not to mention a very generous portion. We also tried the Samoa cold brew, delicious. Atmosphere was great, a very NY vibe.

I took my daughter here for pie and coffee on the strength of a neighbors recommendation. I must say I was very disappointed. There was no real selection of pies, just apple, key lime, and NY cheesecake. The key lime custard itself was tasty, but the crust was not the standard graham cracker, but pastry (which was weird), and managed to be both soggy and tough--I could hardly cut through it. The apple filling was bland, and the texture was somehow simultaneously mushy and dry--no recognizable apple bits in there at all. Its pastry was likewise tough. The coffee was good enough, and the cucumber/lime soda was nice. The upshot, however, was that this late-night treat run--pie and drinks for two was $30!! Way out of my price range. Why does San Antonio have no pie shop??
