Absolutely thrilled with how the evening went. The whole vibe of the restaurant was fantastic but I felt like it was just a little too dark for my already poor eyesight in regard to reading the menu but it totally set the mood and I loved it overall. Our waitress was helpful with recommendations and ensuring we knew the lasagna was vegan. It was creamy and delicious just like she stated it would be. The chicken marinara stole the show though. Highly recommend the oil and bread as opposed to the butter. Cant wait to go back and sit at the bar, I love the red chairs. Espresso martini was on point and well made.

If you can, sit outside. Im old and its too loud inside. If youre cool, I guess youll probably like inside too. That said, everything about the place is fantastic. Everyone working was incredible. They were kind and fun and knew the menu inside and out. We went during restaurant week and so we got a special menu. Everything we ate was incredible. Definitely loved it. Cant wait to go back.

We decided that we were going to spend our four-year wedding anniversary here. We have never been here and often pass it when we re on our way to Southtown. We were expecting a lot more from this place due to the location and often word-of-mouth. My husband dropped me off while he went to go get parking And I sat by myself for about five minutes and my husband came up To meet me upstairs and we waited probably another five minutes just for our waiter to get us some water. We ended up getting bread service with the garlic oil, I feel like the bread was just made by H-E-B, which isn t a bad thing. The meatballs were delicious and the spaghetti arrabiata was great as well. The New York strip Was a little overcooked for our lighting and the chicken Parmesan was mid. I would say the second best thing from the meatballs was probably the s mores Panna cotta. The atmosphere of the place was unique, but I would say the cleanliness needs a bit of a deep clean. Now, if you would ask me what I come back here? No.

SHUT THE FRONT DOOR . I ve lived in this city for 25 years and been selling real estate all over it for 18 and it just took me all this time to find one of the coolest Italian spots that has some of the best food you ll ever have in San Antonio! The ambience of an old repurposed fire station located within ear shot of the Tower of Americas helps to bring your experience to a crescendo of delight but then they just don t stop there! The food is off the charts amazing and this is seriously the best chicken Parmesan I ve ever had! (Of course it didn t have any pasta with it at all which was a little bummer, but the taste and portion size made up for it!) The primi dish Orecchiette con Piselli (try to say that at all . It s too hard for my 8th grade speaking abilities lol) was sooo dang good and it could have paired up nicely with the chicken Parmesan for sure! However . The ULTIMATE DESSERT and the one I can t even get out of my dreams now (seriously) is the S mores Panna Cota! Holy SCHNIKES!! Perfectly creamy and smooth with that sweetness not hitting you too hard and following up with a mellow nice after taste was MONEY!! The manager Naomi Huizar is a rock star and the staff all really want you to have the best experience possible!

What an experience! Downtown San Antonio has many gems but few gleam like Batallion. This was my second visit, and I was greeted by Miguel, who graciously gave me a tour upon asking (so I could see the upstairs portion of the restaurant.) I had dinner at the bar and everything was incredible. Michael helped me pick out a couple of pairings for my meal, and was super knowledgeable. I couldnt ask for a better experience. Delicious food, a kind and knowledgeable team, which is clearly a positive reflection on leadership. Hats off. Batallion!

Huge let down. The service was just bad. Waiter skated by us the entire time; never spoke to him for more than a few seconds at a time. He constantly walked past us and would take forever to take a drink order; there were only 2 of us... The food was sub par for the price. We also ordered the chicken parm and it was the most disgusting thing Ive eaten in a while; we took 1 bite each and immediately felt disgusted. They took it off of our bill but, it was still a lousy experience. We will never be back and Im surprised this place has been open as long as it has.

Had a late dinner reservation and walked from our hotel. Location is great and still close to the La Vallita Historic Village on the Boardwalk. The restaurant is set in an old Fire dept building. A great drink menu with a wide selection of wine and mixed drinks. I ordered the frozen lemon-chillo and my friend had a Super Tuscan both were fantastic. For dinner we each ordered patas Manicotto and a Orecchiette. Both were excellent and flavorful with perfect portions. We shared the meatballs for the table and really enjoyed the red sauce. Its clear care is taken when choosing ingredients. A must stop while in San Antonio and a great choice for something that is not a chain.

The building is very unique and has a charm to it. Everyone was also very friendly and welcoming too. The food was so good. We ordered two pasta dishes and an entree (all to share) and we were very happy. Thank yall so much for making this first anniversary dinner one that we won t forget! Parking: Parking is a bit pricy unless you can find street parking. $20 for 8 hours at the lot across the street. We didn t check the pricing on the lot right behind the building, however.

This place was so good. Food is definitely worth it. Our waiter was amazing considering he was waiting 6 other tables. We ordered 2 bread service apps, 1 meatball app, 2 entree meals (they were small but super filling especially since we got full with the apps) plus 2 glasses of wine for $80 and tipped our waiter a $20. He provided great service. Only disappointment ..but not really was I asked what bread they were serving. It was DELICIOUS I had to know! And the waiter forgot to ask the cook so we left not knowing. Seriously debating and calling and finding out just for that bread alone

I feel place aspires to quality dining. In my visit they are missing the mark. Our waiter was pleasant but inexperienced. I knew this when I ordered a bottle of Groth Sauvignon blanc and he brought me a bottle of Spy Valley Sauvignon Blanc. I questioned it immediately and his answer was our suppliers rotate our Sauvignon blancs and this is what they are currently substituting aside from the fact that they are two completely different wines, different regions, quality and price points, this is just nonsense. I could tell the waiter was just repeating what he was told to say but I found it insulting. Don t bait and switch me. Just tell me you are out of my selected wine. Bad way to start. They screwed up our bread service and then acted frustrated when we called them on it. I ordered the eggplant parm for my entree. Essentially it was breaded and fried overly thick slices of eggplant with mozzarella melted over it and resting in a thin layer of pomodoro sauce and some besciamella. Which is not the traditional way but it s fine. Problem was the besciamella was like eating pure table salt and it ruined the whole dish to the point of being inedible. It was pure salt. I had to send it back. So I ordered the Manicotti instead. Which is one extra large manicotti. When I got the bill they didn t charge me for the Manicotti but the left the eggplant in the bill which was $8 more. I didn t care because the whole bill was $330 but in principal it matters. Overall the service and food was just below average with all their missteps. Ambiance was great and our waiter meant well. Left 20%. Way overpriced

Decent food, nothing crave-able or memorable. Service friendly but not knowledgeable. I would say 3.5 stars overall if I could. They recommend ordering meals in three courses and sharing them as most of their dishes are family style . None of the dishes were what I would consider larger than a normal entree (some of them smaller) and I m glad my wife and I ordered the three courses or I would have left hungry. And I love me some salt, but some dishes were heavy on it as well. We ordered a bottle of wine and asked the server for a recommendation, to which he replied he didn t know a lot about wine and we should just point and pick one . I ve never been to a restaurant with $200 dollar bottles of wine that didn t have at least some training on the wines they offer. Parking: Very limited street parking with a very expensive parking lot next to the restaurant ($20). Kid-friendliness: We didn t take our kids, but we re seated next to a family that did. There is no kids menu, but the kitchen was nice enough to make some butter noodles. One of the children told the server all of the food here is disgusting . So while the restaurant itself doesn t mind children, it isn t necessarily a great option either.

This is the place you go when you have run out of other options. If you watch your wallet, I strongly recommend you avoid this place. Between the out of place electronic dance music and the depression wine glasses, there was nothing especially off putting, just strange. There were no complaints from the table about the salmon and the pork tenderloin. I had the chicken parmesan ehich was a large portion. Maybe I just dont get it, but i will not be going back. With a la cart pricing your bill will stack up quickly here. In houston you would pay this money at Eddie V s to for world class seafood. Here, you cant even get fettucine pasta. The waiter could not pronounce the name of one of the dishes. The menu was quite small. If you are looking for a place to blow money this might be for you. The dinner in an old fire house was novel, but they should tint the windows because the table next to us was getting blinded by the sun. Did I mention 20 dollars minimum parking and no handicap parking? If you have read this far and are still intent on the novelty, i would recommend get the bread service, the italian salad, pick a pasta, and split the chicken parmesan. Parking: Small amount of free street parking, and the parking lot has an 8 hour minimum charge, so your gonna get stuck for 20 bucks even on a saturday.

We celebrated Mothers Day the Saturday before with my hubby, son, DIL, and 8 month granddaughter. The food was amazing! The whipped ricotta with honey AMAZING! Hubby got the lamb chops. The garlic wine cream sauce...DELICIOUS! Im not a lamb fan, but these chops did not have the gamey taste. I ordered the pork tenderloin, cooked perfectly with a little kick. We ordered the lasagna for the table, its not the red sauce version. It was made with pesto...loved it! I tried the chicken parmesean my son ordered, decent size and taste was spot on. The building is an old firehouse or they did a really good job with the decor. They still have the slide down poles. My granddaughter was in her stroller. There is a clear lift to use to get to the 2nd floor. Cant wait to go back for some more of the lasagna and get my own lambchops with that sauce of gold. Didnt get pics of the food, enjoying the company too much. Parking: There isnt a dedicated parking lot. There is paid parking options across the street and next Wheelchair accessibility: There is a lift wheelchair and stroller access

As a first time visitor of The Battalion, my expectation was like any other downtown San Antonio Italian restaurant (large portions, basic menu, vineyard walls). Walking in the atmosphere was completely different, you get this night clubby vibes when you walk in. With an open kitchen, refurbished firehouse interior, and dim (but nice) lighting, you get a sense of wealth. I ordered a French 75, beef tartar (appetizer), spaghetti arrabiata, Parmesan crusted lamb chops, and a piece of house made tiramisu. The French 75 was to die for and came out very quickly. As for the beef tartar, I had never had before so my expectations were no where honestly; but I was surprised I enjoyed it! The main meals were smaller portions which I enjoyed, the pasta noodles being made in house gave them an amazing texture and the lamb chops had the perfect crunch to fat ratio. As for the made in house tiramisu, I cannot express how much I enjoyed it. Truly one of the best I ve had. As for our service, Belle took amazing care of my table, we can not thank her enough for making our first (but not last) trip to The Battalion so special. We will (obviously) be back.

From the moment we stepped through the doors till we left, all staff was dry, impersonal, and awkward. No one made eye contact and I wondered how any other table was enjoying themselves with this sort of company culture. It was so much so that it overshadowed the food which was well made but dining is an experience, especially at this price and when your guests don t feel welcomed then you ve got some reevaluating to do.

I openly express my dislike for Italian cuisine when dining out with friends and family. Despite enjoying pasta, Ive found myself consistently disappointed with Italian renditions, often characterized by heavy tomato-based sauces lacking homemade flavor. Therefore usually not ordering any of the pasta and being sad that the other dishes did not delight. However, Battalion in San Antonio challenged my preconceptions entirely. Entering Battalion, I was struck by the elegant yet modern decor, which exuded sophistication while maintaining a welcoming ambiance, complete with indoor and al fresco seating options. The food at Battalion was a revelation. The Bread Service was a delightful start, with each spread offering a unique experience, notably the Whipped Ricotta, which of the three options stole the spotlight. The Burrata, Beef Tartare, and Spinach Dumplings left me speechless, showcasing flavors unforeseen or tasted. Even though I initially scoffed at the idea of ordering Chicken Parmesan, Battalion proved me wrong with a rendition that surpassed all expectations. However, the true star was the Pepper Crusted Drunken Pork Chop, a dish seemingly unconventional for Italian cuisine (right? Or is this really an Italian thing), regardless it was executed flawlessly. I have no words and I do believe words would completely fail to capture this dish s excellence; its simply a must-try seriously you must try it. Despite not being one for repeat visits, I d be willing to try Battalion again as The Tartar, Spinach Dumplings, and Pork Chop are undeniable highlights, but Im eager to explore more of their menu. So To Battalion: Lets collaborate on a What We Ate review video. @Colefamilyvalues and @minamakesofficial would be totally on board for a fun collab!

If you want Italian food this isnt it. Just a step or two above Olive Garden. Overall everything was completely flavorless. We had the burrata to start. The cheese itself was ok, but the olive oil was not good. The tomatoes on it were the type that add more liquid than flavor. I followed it up with the gorgonzola pasta. Gorgonzola is such a strong cheese that youd have to try really hard to make a cream sauce this bland. Someone hand this chef a salt shaker.

The side dish of roasted carrots was the highlight of my meal! Order these carrots!!! The portions are a bit small since they planned for guests to order from each section of the menu. The meatballs were pretty good, a bit on the dry side but really good flavor. There is outdoor seating but it was chilly that night so we ate inside. My friend ordered the Burrata, it was good but I think it would have been better grilled and warm. The lasagna was spicy which I liked.

What a disaster! First, it s so loud, I couldn t hear my friends across the table. Every surface is hard, causing lots of cacophony. The food was disappointing- the Bread was one of the good things. Overall, Chef has a very heavy hand with Salt and no other spices. Burrata was good, but needed more olive oil and a splash of balsamic. The spinach ravioli was not to my taste: the Parmesan was overly salty and overshadowed the rest of it. The meatballs were more like meat pucks: no seasoning and overdone, but the marinara had so much salt, it was inedible. The strip sirloin was cooked perfectly, but they used too much salt for the sear that I had to cut off that part . The pasta was ok, just didn t have anything in it (maybe a few pieces of prosciutto) - certainly not enough protein for a meal. The sides were ALL overcooked to the point of dehydration: carrots, green beans & cabbage. The 3 lamb chops were well done, so we sent them back .4 came back and, what do you know, but 2 were still well done! Don t get me started on the Apple Tart that is in no way a tart, some weird mix of mousse & cake. Yuck! The table service was off. They re bringing our entrees & our appetizer plates still litter the table. The waiter did a good job of keeping our water filled. Yes, we are foodies & might be more critical than most, but for the prices I expect a decent meal. This was not it!

My favorites are the Chicken Parmesan and the Trenne Bombay pasta. BUT - today I tried a new item - their meatball sub! Don t imagine a Subway version imagine fantastic and elegant! It was incredible and I had an awesome pairing with the Marchesi do Barlow Sbriolo Nebbiolo wine !!! Such a great place! A must visit on business or with friends & family! Excellent bar too!

Herbed butter bread was a 5/5 but only came with 4 thick slices. The spinach dumplings are unlike any traditional dumplings Ive ever had. They were more akin to a Thanksgiving stuffing texture and consistency but they did taste good. Id give them a 4/5. The polenta side dish was extremely bland even with mushrooms mixed in. 2/5 The orecchiette & fettuccine were both extremely salty. I dont think the issue is that they added too much salt, though Im sure that contributed, but instead that they added too many ingredients with a salty taste, like grated Parmesan. Every bite required a drink of water to wash it down with. My mouth was a salty ocean. Beyond being salty to the point of being almost bitter, the rest of the flavors were perfectly fine, albeit a background note. Service was itself fine. We arrived just after opening (5pm) on a Sunday with no reservation. The hostess, upon learning we had no reservation to the empty restaurant, asked if we could have the table ready again by 7:30pm, which nearly 2.5 hours from then. There were only 2 of us eating so Im not sure why they would ask such a question. Early on water was kept full, to the point theyd top off a glass youd only taken 2 small drinks from, but as we got to the pasta course my friends glass sat empty for most of the meal. Bread came out fast and apps not long after. Pasta, specifically advertised as not being the main entree, took long enough to come out that we were both starting to get bored waiting. While many items we ate tasted good and the service wasnt horrible, for the prices they charge and experience they offer, youre better off going to any of the other top rated Italian restaurants in town. Nearly $100 for 2 drinks, bread, one app, 2 pastas, and one side can get you all of that plus desserts elsewhere, and with better flavor.

Parking was easy and convenient. When I made reservations, I noted that we were celebrating a birthday. The hostess and the waiter both greeted us by wishing us a happy birthday. Very nice touch. The ease of parking and the greeting are the highlights of the dinner. My daughter had the chicken parmesean which she described as its okay. I had the lasagna. The ends of the lasagna noodles were curled up and dry, and I didnt care for the overall seasoning of the meat sauce. The interior lighting was very dim, which seemed to help camouflage the less than appealing plates. We split a slice of an apple spiced cake for desert. The cake was very good and plated beautifully. I will say the portions are quite large. If you like the food, you will not leave hungry. I had dined at The Batallion a few years ago and remember a much better experience then.

Battalion is one of my most favorite places, but the parking situation is abysmal. Recently LAZ took over the lot right next to the restaurant. The price to park is reasonable but DO NOT go over what youve paid for - you WILL be fined at least $92 dollars for going over. Yes, you read that right - $92. And note that the clock starts when your car enters the lot - not when you actually pay for the parking. I entered the lot at 5:44, paid by 5:50. I thought I had until 7:50...nope. Oh, and you have exactly 10 minutes to either pay for parking or leave the lot or youll be dinged for not paying at all which is apparently an even bigger fine. There are cameras everywhere - LAZ will see you. The restaurant staff knows about the stiff fines but shares no warnings so I thought I would do so on this forum. When we realized we were bumping up against the clock, we asked the hostess about a possible fine and she shared that yes, the fines are egregious at $92 - so the restaurant is not unaware. If the food werent so dang good, I would never go back. I absolutely love the frozen Limoncello and the chicken parm is divine. Unfortunately the parking fine completely ruined a wonderful evening and it will be a some time before Ill want to return. That said, if I ever do go back Ill Uber over there or park and walk from any lot that is not associated with LAZ. They got the very last dollars from me that they will ever see. Forewarned is forearmed. Caveat emptor.

My husband and I walked into this bar for a Friday night date and it did not disappoint. We walked and were immediately greeted by the hostess and asked if we had a reservation (we were not here to eat, so we asked if we could just sit at the bar). Then, we met Alex, the bartender. Alex was so great, and patient with me as I asked him if he could help me find a classic martini that I might enjoy. He was so informative and took time to help me understand what I was ordering, and explained everything in a way that didn t make me feel like an idiot. I enjoyed a vodka martini straight up with an extra twist & a slightly dirty vodka martini. We also ordered a slice of the tiramisu, and I have thought about how absolutely perfect that dessert was for 3 days. I cannot wait to return to this spot for a dinner reservation!

My wife and I always try a new restaurant on our anniversary. This year was our 15th, and we chose Battalion. My wife has Italian heritage and was hoping not to be let down as she herself is a fantastic cook. Fast forward to parking in front of this beautifully restored old Firestation. The inside was kind of shabby sheik industrial with a very upscale vibe. After being seated, we were graced with the menu and wine list, both were modest in size. We picked a lesser expensive bottle of Italian chianti and made our way to the menu. Having never been here before, we decided to have 4 appetizers. The Olives were on point in a mix of gorganzola cheese and chile oil. We ordered 2 different bread courses, one with the obligatory Olive oil and roasted garlic, and I mean lots of roasted garlic! This was delicious, and the garlic cloves spread like butter on the bread. Our second bread course was paired with a Ricotta cheese drizzled with fresh Honey and cracked Black Pepper. At this point, it seemed as if every bite had more flavor than the last. The Ricotta simply melted in your mouth super creamy, lightly sweet with a nice hit of the savory cracked pepper to finish it off. Our next shared item was the Burrata. This was delivered to our table, and the plating was impressive this large portion of Burrata covered with the Chile oil and capers surrounded by thus delicious very light but highly toasted focacia bred wedges once cut the Burrata was very soft and creamy yet held together do you could enjoy it spread on the focacia or as a nice solid bite. The flavors again were amazing. This was my favorite shared course! We at this time had finished the bottle of wine and ordered another. At no time did we feel rushed or hovered over by the staff, which was perfectly attentive. While they were fetching the wine, we decided to skip the salad course and ordered a pasta course and a main course each. My wife ordered Orecchiette Alla Orecchiette Alla Campagnola and the Lamb Chops. I ordered the Lasagna and the Peppered Drunken Pork Chops. When the pasta came to the table the aroma of my wifes dish was almost hypnotic. You could smell the depth of the flavor, and it didnt disappoint. She had me taste it before I dug into my lasagna, and the pasta was so fresh and the sauce was so full of flavor. I said, How does it get better than that.... thats when I had the first bite. The Lasagna, this thin, healthy portion of which I had just taken a bite, literally made me close my eyes and savor what just hit my palate. I gave my Wife a bite, she too was amazed at the complexity of the flavor. Needless to say, we were again sharing our courses. By now we cant wait for the meat course and it didnt disappoint. The Lamb Chops were crusted and served in a peppercorn demi glass they were cooked to perfection and bone knawing good! The Pork Chops were also crusted and served in a Red Wine demi glase with herbed, paprika roasted potatoes. These boneless Pork Chops were incredibly delicious! The wife had some leftover as we ordered so much food but we had to try the Apple Tart for dessert it was a very generous portion that we shared apple withba hint of lemmon and a light caramel topping it was yummy!Like everything else all night, the chef delivered the flavor, the textures, the aromas of what turned out to be one of the most memorable dining experiences we have had in a very long time! We cant wait to bring our friends! In closing Thanks for making our Anniversary such a memorable one!

The lamb chops were tough and plain literally no flavor. The butter milk sauce was okay, but there was nothing to talk about. Also, what is the point of a dress code if youre not even going to enforce it. The staff are nice. Also, what the hell is the cold broccoli and sauce that had absolutely no flavor. And how do you make a fruit drink taste like just straight alcohol.

My friend ate off of the regular menu and was very satisfied as well. There s a good variety of cocktails and non-alcoholic cocktails. The ambiance is modern yet charming, despite the historic exterior. Service was excellent all evening. My only caveat is that the noise level is very high even when half-full because of the relatively small space and the concrete and brick surfaces everywhere. Be prepared to speak loudly with your party or sit outside where the traffic is a whisper by comparison. They would benefit from sound pads or some sort of soft surface anywhere in the restaurant.

One of us really enjoyed the heavier salad with blue cheese dressing. It is very good. The two others shared the cucumber and tomato salad and the watermelon and feta salad. Both were excellent and very refreshing on a hot summer day. It would be hard to say which is better, but I slightly favored the watermelon salad with the addition of red chiles, which really complemented the watermelon. The pasta list is extensive and very interesting. We could have tried several and should have. We chose the spinach dumplings that are similar to malfatti - excellent. We chose 3 different main dishes. Only the pork chop was really flavorful. The steak was described as steak. My lamb chops were thin and crusted with Parmesan in a tasty sauce. The lamb chops themselves lacked much flavor.
