If youre a beer snob like me, then youll adore this place. A place of refuge in a sea of sports bars, the Hoppy Monk features a long list of beers organized by beer type. Lots of local craft mixed with quality imports. Read: chimay quality imports. The bartender knows what hes doing too as they feature quite a lineup of unique cocktails. We didnt get a chance to try the food, but the vibe is cool too. I have a knack for monasteries and the place gives the vibe of an old monastery. So if monks and monk made beer are your thing, give this place a go!

Stopped here for Dinner and to try some beer and was very impressed. They have a huge selection of beer and if you can t find one or ten you like something is wrong with you. The food was surprisingly great. I had a Rueben and my wife a burger both delicious and even the fries were so so good. The service was also excellent our server was friendly and helpful with recommendations. I think we may try brunch here soon

Delightful food (get dessert)! The fish and chips had a perfect batter to fish ratio and was perfectly crispy without any dry or soggy spots. Chips were a nice variety of sizes and shapes. Staff was very attentive and helpful without being overbearing. DJ was great. Oh! and it was nice that they had mocktails. Will definitely be coming back next time I m in the area!

This place was not good. The server didnt come very often and wasnt very attentive. The fish and chips wasnt good, the breading was doughy and the fries were soggy, some burnt and flavorless. I never saw my server to ask for ketchup. The tables were scratched up and damaged.

This monastery is dedicated to the celebration of excellent beer and delicious food! I had a great time here. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to help with making a selection from their large selection on draft. They also serve cocktails and flights of whiskey, tequila, and beer. The atmosphere is fantastic and comfortable, I really like the beams in the ceiling. I chose to check this place out based almost entirely on the name. I wasnt disappointed at all! The quality of the food they serve is beyond my expectation. It is clear that the people responsible are really passionate and talented. The entire experience was enjoyable. If I lived around here, I would be a regular.

I have passed by Hoppy Monk quite a few times. Delivered 2 kegs here so I had the opportunity to come inside! Very cool bar and grill in a Haus styled venue. Tons of beers on tap and full service bar. Games and cool atmosphere at this unique location.

This place is a great restaurant. Every time I have gone I have always had a good experience. The food and beer is on point and the service has always been great. The wings are amazing and I love how they serve local beers from breweries across the country. I am very disappointed though from my visit this past Saturday. Arturo was our server and he wasnt very friendly at all. He had a scowl the entire time and never once saw him smile. I ordered a vodka soda and asked if they had Red Bull. He acted offended when I asked about Red Bull and told me they didnt serve chain products. Which is fine, I can respect that. However, he was annoyed and kept up the same attitude the whole time. I asked if he could take a group picture and this seemed to annoy him as well. When we closed our tabs, he handed us the Toast device to fill out gratuity and rate the service. What shocks me is that he has the default gratuity marked as 20%. I cant believe he would start at that when he knows he isnt friendly or attentive. He didnt thank us for coming or anything else for that matter. He took our payment and then walked away without saying anything. This is a shame as I have always had friendly servers here. Some people just arent meant for the service industry. Hopefully this gets addressed as this is a great business.

Not impressed at all with the Brunch. My plate was so hot that immediately burned the roof of my mouth, could not eat and enjoy food for a couple of days. On the other hand, my husbands plate was cold he did not enjoy it. They offer brunch but not coffee options, just black coffee, very simple. Food was nothing special.

I like their food and atmosphere, but I give them a low service rating because we were ignored a lot by the bartenders. They were too busy cleaning the bar hours before they closed, so we grabbed our drinks and hung out outside by the DJ. We would have definitely stayed for another drink if they were more engaging.

I dream about the IPA wings tbh. I ve tried almost everything on the menu, and I go back for those wings every time. I don t like IPAs, but the waiters are always able to suggest refreshing beers that pair well with the wings, or whatever I m having. Sometimes it gets crowded and you have to wait a bit, but service is always good, and the food and beer is always worth the wait. The waiters are usually really knowledgeable about beer. All the craft beer is awesome and I love that there s such a huge selection. I like that the food menu is not as expansive as the drink list, but every dish is high quality. The burgers are amazing but if they ever take the IPA wings off of the menu I m not sure what I ll do. It s not cheap, but it s not overpriced. Definitely worth a try if you haven t.

I come here all the time during the week and i always have a great experience. Usually this female bartender with tattoos serves me and she s always so nice and funny! However, I came in over the weekend and all the male bartenders were constantly on their phones. I couldn t even get their attention. The service was terrible!

The bar staff is pretty rude. They werent busy at all at the bar but still were very unfriendly and seemed annoyed at our presence. No smiles. We didnt get any drink menus so I goggled Hoppy Monk for the menu. The first thing that pops up was a chicken sandwich and looked so good. Later when they finally gave a QR code menu, I didnt see it and I asked about it and without looking he just said whatever we have is on the menu. Which I understand but you could treat me like a person and look at me and not be rude. Once we got to our table, our server was good, but didnt ever smile. He was very attentive to us and did a great job. I ordered the truffle potatoes which were just regular tasting potatoes and nothing to pay extra for. One thing Ill say for them was that later when the place got crazy busy (every spot taken), our server still made time to check on us and our drinks came out very fast. We never had to look for him because we needed something and it was taking awhile. I would go again but not to the bar.

Love the beer menu. Loads of my favorite style, sour. Food was delicious. The purple chips are amazingly fresh too. Easy one of my favorite places to go at night. Patio dog friendly, if you have a well behaved one bring them here. Some waiters even had treats. Great atmosphere. 5 out of 5. Keep up the great work. Btw had the mussels and I hated them..still giving 5 stars for atmosphere, service and selection IMO

I finally visited The Hoppy Monk and was thoroughly pleased by the entire experience. The atmosphere is inviting and vibrant, perfect for a relaxed evening out. Their selection of draft beers and spirits is extensive, catering to all tastes. I opted for an IPA flight, and every beer was delightful, showcasing a range of flavors that any beer enthusiast would appreciate. The food was equally impressive. We started with the chips and guac, made from fresh blue corn chips that were simply delicious. For the main course, I tried the rabbit tacos, which were incredible unlike anything Ive ever had before. The unique flavors and quality ingredients made them a standout dish. Overall, The Hoppy Monk is a fantastic spot for both drinks and food. I highly recommend it and will definitely be returning soon!

This place is a scam! Do not enter. The hoptinist club was a scam! $5 for a beer for 200 beers to get on the wall with a quote! What happened to it? They lost all their customer data. The general manager and the owner been giving their customers the run around for 3 years on how they are going to fix their club. They have no solution. I have showed them my excel file with all my beers from 2016-2020. Some of your customers were close to get on the wall but yall failed us. Wonder why your sales are down and customer did not return. Time to step it up and own it. Land of mañana with no action .. stop giving your customers the run around. Email and talking to management is a waste.

This place was a great disappointment!!! Our waiter was nice and pleasant but I think overwhelmed as we were there hosting a going away gathering. Sat down at the bar and received zero service until I walked out. Oh well it looked good. UPDATE: in response to the owner reply, I shouldn t need a manager involved. I simply sat at your bar and waited to order, maybe 7 minutes. Two of your bartenders ignored me for some time, while they polished glasses with their heads down and served other customers next to me, who were already very drunk and loud. They never once acknowledged me or even began to look like they wanted to serve me. I don t think a manager is necessary when it s obvious your bartenders don t want to do their jobs. If I could have poured my own beers I would have. They were right in my face but just never moving. When a customer sits down at your bar, you should immediately address them and let them know if they need to wait. I walked into this place not knowing where to sit or how to get any service. I m still confused. Usually sitting at the bar gets you prompt service but not here. They ll just ignore you until you start walking out!

We were looking for a place to get an after-funeral cognac and amaretto. Yes, we know it was a Sunday evening. The Hoppy Monk was the closest open bar. We ordered a cognac - they didn t have any. So went with a brandy and an amaretto. Both drinks were served in SHOT GLASSES. Neither one of them were very good. We then ordered a bourbon - again served in a shot glass. We know they have plenty of glasses to serve all of their brews, so why couldn t they use one of those instead of a shot glass? If they are that clueless on how to serve other alcohols, then don t carry them!

Hands down, one of the few best breweries here in San Antonio with GREAT FOOD. My partner ordered the Bacon Jam and Egg Burger which was recommended to me; however, I ordered the Fish & Chips along with a Chimay. Everything was delicious! The Mac & Cheese.. Ah. You need to try it yourself. We sat out in the patio one visit and the next we sat inside - both were quite nice and comfortable. This is one of our places to wine down after a long week or month. I definitely recommend The Hoppy Monk to our friends and colleagues.

I would have given the restaurant a perfect score if the server was honest. I went here for happy hour and enjoyed the vibes. However, I was a disappointed about the daiquiri as I was expecting a frozen drink. But the glaring issue was the dishonesty of the server. She stated that the fries and sauce were included in the price, but was assessed a charge for the fries and sauces, along with a mixed drink fee. This was very sneaky and dishonest. Even when I asked her about it, she said she thought it was included and apparently it was not and did nothing to correct her mistake. Unfortunately, it was a very sneaky way to have a first time customer to pay for charges that were not provided upfront. Thus is a very shady way of doing business and this is not truly a happy hour vibe.

Good food and beer trying to stay alive in a struggling concept, managed by a great and honest person with deep local roots in San Antonio, who really wants to make a difference among his staff and local guests. Hopefully, corporate from El Paso will step up accordingly, or even better, step down. Nobody in the industry cares about QR menus anymore, except for the owner, and its so big and confusing, again, except for the owner. Parking: Kinda big. A nearby church uses it on Sundays too.

One of the few places Ive been to where they make a good old fashioned, though pretty pricey. However, I was rather annoyed when I asked for truffle fries, which my server nodded in understanding, but soon gave me an expensive baked potato. Dirty potato he called it, which wasnt what I wanted. Another server kept telling me dont worry, it tastes good. Well, cool, but its not what I wanted. I guess this was just one server not understanding what I meant and his buddy trying to back him up. Annoying to me but at least the drinks are good. So thats why I only gave three stars. That and the damn QR code didnt work. Asked for a print out menu but the server seemed confused in what to do. Would be nice to have the option for a simple paper menu for these kinds of situations.

Great food, lackluster and lackadaisical service. Bar takes 10m to greet a seat let alone provide water, good luck with a table. In previous scouting instances I ve waited for +30-45m before when the place was near empty for the first round of drinks. Today 1445, walk in, sit at the bar. Wait. No service, no greeting, nothing. Walkout. Pre-Covid, this was the spot. Front of house and back of house was firing. Came in damn near 2-3 times a week $30-$50 a head and no qualms about +20% tip Now a days I ve been trying to check in here from time to time and it s always the same. This was my first time back in 4mo and it s just not worth the time. TLDR: There s other spots up the road that want your business and hold themselves to a standard of respect for you and your time.

I went to Hoppy Monk on Saturday around 5 pm. Understandably, they were a bit busy. As someone who used to be in service industry for a decade, I totally understand. We were sitting outside for quite some time without a server ever stopping by. Since I knew they were busy, we decided we would walk inside and grab a drink from the bar. We had planned to grab a drink, close out, and walk back to our table where we would open a new tab. However, the bartender wouldn t allow it. No hello, how are you, or welcome. The first question out of his mouth was, Are y all sitting at the bar or grabbing a table? We told him we wanted a table, so he said you must order with your server. We told him we were waiting for our server, but no one came by. Instead of just pouring us a drink, he just says We re busy. Then we go back outside (since we had no choice) and waited again for a server. Finally she comes by and takes our order. She tells us we re so busy so be patient. (Mind you we haven t complained once) In what world do you speak to a customer that way? There are other ways to say be patient like please bear with us, thank you for your patience, I apologize for the wait, etc. Additionally, she didn t know the answer to a question so she stopped mid order to go ask. That s fine, but our question was about our drink and when she brings it out, it s wrong. The rest of our experience is smooth except for when I told her that I would have one more glass and then close out. I wait around for my second glass to come out and it never does. She stops by to check on us to see if I want another drink and I told her I ordered one. She tells me No you didn t. We didn t argue with her. When she left the person I was with told me that I did in fact order the glass. There were several times as a server that customers would think they ordered something and they didn t. In that situation, I would NEVER tell a customer No you didn t. I would just order the item for them and apologize that I misheard or misunderstood. Sadly, this place has the potential to be great but won t because the service is horrible. Management- please teach your employees basic customer service. I won t be back.

This place is as beautifully crafted as the food and their beer. So good, in fact, I forgot to take photos. The staff is exceptionally courteous and the beer selection is out-of-this world. Compared to similar establishments, the beer list is humble, but also focused. The star is surprisingly the food. It s surprising to find a beer establishment that has food as complexly conceptualized to accompany their selection of beverages. The chef is talented, and the food has limitless potential. Keep it coming! I look forward to returning soon. Kid-friendliness: The social vibe is so strong, you won t notice small children.

The staff were polite but didnt go out of their way to chat which was perfect. They were efficient and attentive, which let the awesome beer selection and relaxed atmosphere take center stage. It was pretty quiet when I went, perfect for catching up with friends over a few great beers. Cant say what its like on busy nights, but its definitely a cool spot overall.

VERY annoying experience from start to finish. They no longer give samples of beer (do they know they are literally the only beer bar that does not let you sample before committing?). From the male bartender, we ordered ice cream of the day (tiramisu sounded amazing) with our beer. We sipped slowly, waiting for the ice cream... but we finished our beer in about 20 min & still no ice cream. As we gave our payment to the female bartender, we told her to cancel the ice cream. Of course, it immediately came out. We turned it down because we did not want to stay any longer. She told the male bartender (11/8/23, late night) to take the ice cream off our tab before processing our payment, but he did not. We had to ask him again to take it off, which he finally did. It shouldnt have taken us asking one bartender, her telling him, then us telling him. We were visiting from Austin & this bar was high on our places to visit. We wont be making that mistake again.

I ordered a beer on happy hour that was never delivered because they were changing out the tap. Fine. I asked if I should order something else so I could get a beverage. Thats what I got. I ordered fish and chips. They were soggy and bland. Someone came out and said they were making the aoili that came with the dish. On the bill I was charged for the aoili that came out late and included on the dish description and no offer was made to take the dish off the bill that I did not eat. He asked if I would like to have him ask the manager to have that removed. It shouldnt even be a question when you are inappropriately charged for an item. There is also a delivery fee. When asked what this is for, I was told it is actually from using Toast as their credit card system. That sounds like a problem they should be absorbing and not passing on to the customer, especially without making that clear before ordering. What a disappointment. Edit-I still have not been reimbursed for the improperly charged item, despite confirming that I wanted it reimbursed, but they had time to respond to this review. I will not be returning to waste more money at this place.

The only restaurant that purposely disables online ordering on their website& via any other service supposedly possible. Instructions are to place to-go orders by calling ahead. Call ahead- repeatedly refused to take an order over the phone& told to place order online. Except, again, online ordering by Favor/ Door Dash/ Toast/ own business website has all been disabled!

We visited this place while in San Antonio. I had 2 full beers spilled on me by a servers helper They were more concerned about mopping the floor. No one offered paper towels or anything to help me dry myself off. My purse was soaking we my shirt and pants and shoes were soaking. The server was not any help. Just not concerned about this mishap. Would not recommend ever

Decent place. Gumbo was good. Plenty of beer selections. I wanted a lager and it seemed choices were limited. Might be mistaken. Wife had a white wine which was okay. Its a decent bar. We love The Hoppy Monk. The beer and atmosphere are fabulous. That said, I find that some things on the food menu need some help. We went last night; the chicken wings, guacamole and aguachiles were all delicious. I had the arugula salad and it tasted like nothing but dry arugula and radicchio. There was virtually no dressing, no blue cheese, no walnuts and there definitely weren t any golden beets! I love bitter greens but had to bring this salad home and tweak it myself. Then it was delicious. The waitress was swamped and slow so it wasn t worth returning it. We ll be back, but the kitchen needs a little quality control. Thanks for all of the yummy beers and for the great venue.
