The Buckhorn Saloon & Museum

About the Company

rating: 4.4

The Buckhorn Saloon is where it all began—where history was made and legend lives. It is where Teddy Roosevelt recruited Rough Riders and Pancho Villa is rumored to have planned the Mexican Revolution. Many of the original furnishings still grace today's Buckhorn Saloon, including the back-bar which was hand-crafted of marble and cherry wood. The bar features locally brewed beers on draft. You might also like one of our delicious and icy Prickly Pear Margaritas; it’s a Texas favorite!

If you ve got a hankerin to step into a saloon that s soaked in as much history as whiskey, then The Buckhorn Saloon and Museum in San Antone is where you ll want to tie up your horse. This here establishment ain t just any ol watering hole it s a time machine that ll take you straight back to the days when cowboys were kings and the frontier was wild and free. The first thing that hits you when you push through those weathered doors is the sheer spectacle of it all. The walls are lined with more mounted critters than you can shake a stick at, from towering elk to creatures you d expect to find in a far-off jungle. It s the kind of collection that would make any old-timey hunter green with envy and any tenderfoot s jaw drop to the floor. But let s not forget we re in a saloon, and this bar s got a pedigree that goes back to 1881. The bar itself is a masterpiece of woodwork, and when you sidle up to it, you can almost hear the echoes of boots on the floor and the clink of spurs as cowhands and lawmen alike belly up for a drink. Whether you re orderin a straight whiskey or one of their more modern concoctions, you ll be sippin on a bit of Texas history. And if you think The Buckhorn s just about the booze, well, you ve got another thing comin . The museum is a treasure trove of the Old West, packed to the rafters with relics and oddities that tell the tale of a time when the line between law and outlaw was mighty thin. Every exhibit s a story, and you ll find yourself lost in the legends of the past before you know it. But don t go thinkin this place is all dusty memories there s life in these old bones yet. The Texas Ranger Museum, right next door, is a tribute to the men who brought justice to the wild frontier, and it s a must-see for anyone with a taste for the tales of lawmen and desperados. So if you re ridin through San Antonio and lookin for a place where the spirit of the Wild West is alive and well, look no further than The Buckhorn Saloon and Museum. It s a slice of Texas history served up with a shot of whiskey and a side of adventure. Review of The Buckhorn Saloon and Museum Wild West Style Dish If your appetite is as big as the Texas sky and you re hankerin for a meal that ll stick to your ribs, The Buckhorn Saloon and Museum has just the dish for you. This ain t your average saloon grub what they serve up here is as bold and hearty as the cowboys who tamed the Wild West. One dish that stands out like a lone rider on the prairie is their Buckhorn Chili. This bowl of red is packed with rich, savory flavors that tell the tale of the Texas frontier with every spoonful. Made with tender chunks of beef and a blend of spices that ll make you tip your hat in respect, it s a dish that doesn t shy away from a little heat. The chili s got just the right kick to remind you that you re in the heart of Texas, where the food s as fiery as the spirit of the people. And if you re feelin particularly ravenous, pair that chili with a side of cornbread. Fresh out of the oven, it s golden and fluffy, with just the right amount of sweetness to balance the bold flavors of the chili. Together, they re a duo as perfect as a cowboy and his trusty steed. For dessert, the Texas Pecan Pie is a slice of heaven that ll have you loosening your belt buckle. Rich, nutty, and sweet, it s the kind of treat that makes you feel like you ve struck gold at the end of the trail. So if you find yourself at The Buckhorn Saloon and Museum, don t just come for the history come for a taste of the Wild West that ll satisfy your hunger and leave you ready to ride off into the sunset, content and full.

Curious why The Buckhorn Saloon & Museum charges an entrance fee. Considering its historical significance and cultural importance, it would be great if they offered free admission to make it accessible to everyone. Perhaps they could explore alternative revenue streams or partnerships to support their operations while keeping the experience free for visitors. Would love to see them reconsider their pricing strategy!

Definitely has the old Texas charm. Food is really good. The Happy burger is big, juicy, and flavorful. The fries could have a bit bigger portion size, but not bad. The root beer float was just ok. Lots of neat stuff to see and history to read. Pretty cool to think you re sitting at the same bar as some of American history s most notables. Parking: Very limited street parking, close to paid parking garage or just walk over from one of the many hotels nearby. Wheelchair accessibility: Entry is street level with slight incline. The rest of the floor is flat, level and hard. Plenty of room to maneuver and lots of tables to choose from.

We looked up on website hours for Sunday. Website says 10-5. We arrived at 3:05 p.m. There was a note on counter that said closed. I asked the cashier and she said they changed their hours. They now close kitchen at 3. That would have been nice to know before I left my conference early and walked 2 miles with my kids just to visit this place! In the past the food has been outstanding. Not sure I will be back. Instead, Lonestar Cafe hooked us up and it had amazing food.

We just went to the three different museums/exhibits. We did not actually eat at the saloon. The two museums were great and the one had hundreds of taxidermy animals on display and the other had the history of the Texas Rangers and a lot of artifacts from the rangers. The third museum had oddities like a malformed corpse of a person and 2 headed animals and things of that nature, which I found very disturbing and I did not enjoy that part or take any pictures in that room. There was also a room with the history of Bonnie and Clyde and the car they were in when they died in a shootout with the law.

My friend and I stumbled across the Buckhorn Saloon on our way to the River Walk from the Alamo. Needing an afternoon refreshment, the word saloon was an easy draw for two curious travelers. Oh this place is a gem!!! Disclaimer: If you don t like seeing taxidermy or stuffed dead animals, this is not the place for you. The saloon opened in 1881 and is reputed to be the go to place for cowboys coming in off the dusty trails. During that time the owner would trade with cowboys and folks, negotiating beer and whiskey in exchange for antlers and rattlesnake rattles. The owner would then use these items to create furniture or art pieces. Some pieces can be seen in the museum. But the huge collection of antlers is displayed throughout the saloon. It is also rumored that the Buckhorn is where Teddy Roosevelt recruited the rough riders. The atmosphere is definitely unique and quirky, but oh so fun. And the staff were extremely friendly and welcoming!!! Shout out to Britnie Upthegrove!! And just let me tell you about their prickly pear margarita AUHMAZING!!! Crystalee has a great pour and made a fantastic drink. It is now my favorite drink of all time!! If you get the chance, make sure you stop by and get a drink! Visited on October 19,2023

If you are an animal lover the upstairs and most of this place.is not for you..stuff animals everywhere and some that are endangered..My husband and I went upstairs but I left as was making me a bit sick to see all the dead big game animals on display. Good gift shop at the end of the museum.and fun old west town inside.

Wonderful main dining space in this San Antonio mainstay. We ordered lunch via counter service. Tex-Mex salad with grilled chicken was really nice. My wife enjoyed the berry-spinach salad with grilled chicken.

Everything was great. We got a discount on the museum since we ate first. The food was huge but took a while to get to us and it wasnt super busy. We got drinks from the bar. The walk through museum is great and Im happy we were able to go at our own pace. It was very nice and clean, the staff was friendly. No complaints.

While the ambience of the saloon was amazing, the one younger female bartender was rude, obnoxious, and unpleasant. Ruined the entire visit. She should not be employed in the service industry.

A very original place, easily accessible from the River Walk and definitely worth the little detour. You can go there to drink a beer and admire the period back bar and the incredible hunting trophy decor. You can have a bite to eat there. The menu is short, traditional American, and its good. We will remind you that we are here in a restaurant and not a fast food restaurant to explain the somewhat slow service. There is a vintage games room for fun shooting at pretend targets. And above all, there is this incredible museum/cabinet of curiosities. We go there thinking were going to admire a few stuffed animal heads, but its much more than that. The gallery is huge, we go through all the continents then we move on to a mini old-fashioned fair and some trompe loeil attractions that we can test and another part on the Texas Rangers. Its impossible to imagine, upon entering this saloon, that there is so much to see inside. Totally picturesque. But if theres one reason to go, its for the incredible collection of horn chairs. A must see, for young and old alike. Everything is accessible to people with reduced mobility.

No visit to San Antonio is complete without a stop at the Buckhorn. You can grab a beer at the bar and then peruse the large museum which is up the stairs at the back. They have an enormous collection of taxidermy and oddities, but the real draw here is the Texas Ranger Museum. It is full of stories and relics from the rangers and their families. Bonnie and Clyde, old train robberies, you name it. Very neat collection of important history.

Went to this venue as part of a work-related team meeting. Im Texas born and raised but had not visited San antonio in a number of years. This little gem was a lot of fun! The event included food and guided boot scooting in the main ballroom but what made this saloon so much fun is the unique museum! The tilted house was a real treat and the Texas decor is something I think out-of-towners will appreciate. I do recommend checking the place out!

Isaw the carpetbagger and Adam the woo on YouTube go here. So we decided to go here for ourselves. Super fun but a little pricey at 93 bucks for four people but we had a great time still. They have sideshow taxidermy, Texas rangers museum, all over the world taxidermy , all kinds of Texas memorabilia. Kid-friendliness: Tons of things for kids to do.
