Reputed to be the second oldest bar in Texas, the Menger is a lively, cozy, wood paneled marvel. Its decorated with several period pics of San Antonio, and the Teddy Roosevelt photos were a reminder he recruited rough riders here. Theres even a second story to look down at the bar. In addition to the door from the street theres a door from the Menger hotel itself and adjacent restrooms. The Alamo is just steps outside the street door, and the river center is around the corner. We had the drink specials listed at the table, which were several dollars cheaper than the menu cocktails.

So no waiter/waitresses, it s incredibly loud. Staff doesn t smile at all. Drinks are flat, oh well still wet and cold. Staff mannerism play a big role on my thoughts of a restaurant. If you re not a people person, not the right job for you. They also seem very impatient. You put Menger family to shame. I DO love the old historic atmosphere of the bar/hotel. I stayed in hotel last November and loved it. Burger and fries were okay. I ve had better. Still left a tip.

Really cool atmosphere. Bartender was very nice. Great drinks. I had a Berry-tini, and it was really good. We also really appreciated that they had non-alcoholic beer! (My husband doesnt drink.)

The second oldest bar in Texas and the spot where Teddy Roosevelt recruited his Rough Riders. If that alone doesn t convince you to stop here then there s no hope for you. It s a great little bar with character and an attentive and friendly staff. The Alamo beer here is on point and it s a nice spot to check out just steps from the historic church.

Great experience. My chocolate martinis were delicious. Ms. Angela was AMAZING! My husband and I were celebrating our 43rd wedding anniversary on Monday night, and Angela took really good care of us. Cant wait to go back.

Bartender Jeff was awesome and so were the Minnesotans and hot guy wearing Levi s from Tennessee. I ordered a whiskey straight up and Jeff left the bottle on the bar just like the old days for me Angela was a wealth of information and I enjoyed her stories. And Paul, the Barback put up with us very well. I love this bar! I ll be back

You have to say you ve been at least once. Atmosphere and historical aspect is 5-star. Love the cozy feel and mahogany wood. We went for the first time on a Friday afternoon for a drink. It was a nice experience and would definitely go back.

We had a table of ten here and ordered our own drinks. Bused our own tables. Cleaned up after other customers. After we closed up and paid out some lady came and told us that our one year old cannot stand where she was standing and need to sit at our table. She was standing at my chair with me sitting in it. My daughter was not loud, she was not running around, she was very calm and just standing next to me, in my reach. In front of her mother. It s absolutely mind boggling that staff would be so rude to customers. When my family walked out the door the lady came running behind us to apologize saying she didn t mean to run us off. Well, you did run us off and I doubt we ever come back to your family UNFRIENDLY establishment. Just the fact that this lady had to follow us to apologize to make herself feel better about her rudeness says everything. Must have felt guilty for a reason. We will take our money elsewhere. Don t need you Menger hotel bar. Your cocktails aren t even good anyways. They also charge for import prices on Stella Artois even though it s brewed in the USA. Not really an import when it s made here. Overall I would not recommend this place to family or friends. I would advise families with children avoid this terrible, miserable place.

Absolutely ROTTEN male bartender on Saturday early afternoon, August 26, 2023. He was instantly offending me, a very long term regular customer of 15+ years. He threatened me several times when I am the most polite person anyone could know. He destroyed my entire day, so I had to go straight home, as I am a Veteran with PTSD. I will never go near the Menger Hotel again and any other establishments they are associated with. This was so bitterly cruel to me, a permanently disabled person and I am a senior citizen. He also charged me almost $30.00 for a $12.00 drink that I did not finish. Menger Hotel can go away.

Justin is one of the best downtown Bartenders! Hes been serving chilled cocktails for decades and has excellent recommendations for nearby activities and restaurants. Ask Justin to shake up his pineapple upside down martini or the green apple martini! We love visiting our Menger Bar on our date nights. So there is absolutely no real service here. We came in and sat at a table, and then the bartender summoned us to the bar for our orders when another staff member was just standing around and could have taken our order.

We went to the Menger Bar as soon as we arrived in San Antonio and were checked into our room at the Menger Hotel. We were not very hungry and decided to split a cheeseburger. It was cooked to order and amazing! My husband got a Bloody Mary and I got a Margarita on the rocks and both drinks were delicious! The bar atmosphere was pub-like and just like what you would expect in a historic hotel. The staff were super friendly and our food arrived much sooner than we expected. It was a lovely way to kick off our time in San Antonio.

This is one of my favorite bars anywhere. Just the history alone is worth walking in. Always love to have a Stella Artois or 2 here, and enjoy the balcony overlooking the bar. The moose and me ..we have a few stories to tell, and a few secrets not to.
