About the Company
rating: 4.5
Established in 1867, along the banks of the Concho River, Fort Concho was built to protect frontier settlements, patrol and map the vast West Texas region, and quell hostile threats in the area. Constructed for the most part of native limestone, Fort Concho consisted of at least forty buildings and covered more than 1600 acres. Today, Fort Concho National Historic Landmark encompasses most of the former army post and includes twenty-four original and restored fort structures. The old frontier army post is now a historic preservation project and museum which is owned and operated by the City of San Angelo, Texas.

The historical content and displays were very informative. There was a lot of history about the 9th and 10th Calvary (Buffalo Soldiers). We took approximately two hours to review the museum content. I am 70 years old and my biggest complaint is there was no seating in the museum. No place to rest your legs for a few minutes.

If your hours say you are open until 5, why are you locking the buildings at 4:30? People travel to come see this establishment. The hours should reflect the times people can actually tour the establishment.

Very interesting experience. These folks have taken care in many details to provide an authentic experience of what life in this 19th century Fort could have been like. The grounds are original and in fantastic condition. The buildings have been meticulously restored to an amazing condition. Excellent work and effort on restoration of Army equipment including cannon and livery. There is a fantastic restoration of an Infirmary and Officers quarters. There is an interesting exhibition of antique telephone, and telegraph with some very fine antique phones on display. The entrance fee was 3$ and well worth the time to visit. Super impressed by the efforts involved here.

Fort Concho was home to The Buffalo Soldiers, all Black Army regiments who fought valiantly to expand the American West and for The Promise of opportunity, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for ALL. They earned their names from the Native communities they fought against who grew to respect them for their strength and bravery in battle. The Natives said these men reminded them of their cherished buffalo because of the similar matted texture of the soldiers human hair to that of the buffalos whooly coat. Units of all four Buffalo Soldier regiments served at Fort Concho from 1869-1885. The most famous was the famed 10th Cavalry, who had its headquarters at the fort from 1875-1882. Over Fort Concho s twenty-two years of operation, the Buffalo Soldiers comprised more than HALF of the post s total enlisted population. Sadly, this is still a history that is unknown by the average Texan -- or American for that matter -- but is lauded with great pride in the African American community and beyond. Buffalo Soldiers, we salute you and thank you for your unheralded service and contribution to this great nation!

Where do I even start? My family went there for Christmas at Old Fort Concho, and it was the most disappointing event of my life. For starters, my wife was deadnamed and harrassed by a very transphobic ticket booth worker. Then there was just... nothing to do. No reenactments, barely anything in the way of stalls to browse or tents with lovely goods. And worst of all: the two food stalls were overpriced and horribly cooked. The only saving grace is that they werent firing those horrible canons on the hour this year. Im autistic and sudden loud noises scare me half to death.

It wasnt as exciting as the hype tried to make it out to be, but that being said it is well taken care of, well laid out and tons of old building to see. We also went to their Christmas at Fort Concho and got to see Santa Clause and Nativities put on by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was nice to see that fort Concho remembered to put Christ in Christmas.

As in many years passed, our trip to Christmas at Old Fort Concho is much anticipated each December. Wonderful historic exhibits, men and women dressed in costume roaming the grounds, cavalry soldiers trotting the grounds on their horses and greeting folks. The booming of cannon fire. Fair food served up by a variety of food trucks. Will someone please explain what happened to all this? Barely a hand full of reenactors, no horses or cavalry! It appears that all they wanted to do this year was pack every available barracks building with grossly overpriced goods. 3 food vendors who felt 14$ for an order of burned string they called curly fries!!! The annual 4h horse rides for kids had 3 horses. The petting zoo was a joke. And where were the tents that for years lined the entire barracks side filled with wonderful homemade wooden items, blankets and goods. As always we had a great time just walking the grounds but the sense of being in an historic place was not there. Whoever put together this years festival should have been locked in stocks and let us throw eggs at them. Because they sure laid an egg of their own.

Cool piece of history. I could only imagine what it looked like when it was operational. Defining worth checking out.

Well restored and curated buildings. So interesting to learn about the Buffalo Soldiers and their role in West Texas history.
