EXCELLENT FREE HISTORY MUSEUM: Looking for a 1-2 hour stop while traveling through Lubbock? Clean bathrooms, great historical artifacts & period-preserved buildings that can be entered or viewed. Fantastic area let the kids get some reverent exercise before another 6 - 10 hours on the road. Additionally, during summer the museum offers free trolley ride tours.

What a hidden gem! This place is spotless and manned by passionate and informative folks. We went on a whim and are so glad we did. So much to see inside and out. The walking tour outside is well marked and takes you through centuries of historic homes and buildings. Definitely a must see if you want to get a glimpse inside life of those who worked the land and herded the cattle in the Texas Panhandle.

Great tour guide. Awesome displays and signage. We loved the educational aspect with the Hank the Cow Dog display. A great way to talk about what goes into growing beef. The enthusiasm of the workers in the gift shop was a nice touch, especially the retired teacher. I dont remember her name. Thanks for a great day.

We were asked to help chaperone our grandsons class on a field trip to the National Ranching Heritage Center. We were very impressed with each of the displays, restored buildings, and landscaping. There is much to be learned about the early settlers who farmed and ranched in the area. Perhaps one of the best displays was that of Hank the Cow Dog. My wife and I are planning to return to take in more of what the museum has to offer. The most impressive part of the museum is what it teaches about the value of farming and beef production.

For those who like history, this is the ideal place to learn about the evolution of the history of houses and livestock in the USA. They divided it into 2 environments: the internal one where there is a small museum with replicas of old means of transportation, oil extraction equipment (since Texas is one of the states with the highest oil extraction), clothes used in the 50s, a room with sculptures of friends such as horses and oxen and a small gift and convenience store. The exterior environment is simply fantastic: it shows the evolution of houses and livestock from 1780 to 1950. Most of the buildings are original, brought from various locations in the region and assembled at Ranching History. So it is possible to see the evolution of construction where houses and stables were initially made of stone and mud and over time they took on different configurations as well as the materials used. The highlight was the Trinity Mission church (1920), made entirely out of small pieces of wood. The walk in the outdoor area takes around 2 hours to complete calmly. Simply wonderful, very educational!

We recently visited The National Ranching Heritage Center and must say that this is a fabulous facility. So glad they have dismantled and reassembled all of these important ranch buildings from across the region. The grounds are thoughtfully laid out so that you can take a leisurely stroll at you own pace to see all of the saved buildings. We learned a lot about ranch life in the Panhandle Plains area of our state. The main building has great displays and beautiful western art. Looking forward to a return visit one day. And with facilities geared specifically to kids it s a great place for them, too. Go .you will not be disappointed

But I understand they need to be preserved. Admission is free but donations are welcome by cash or by scanning the barcode if no cash on hand in order. This museum contains many interesting items relating to the history of Texas ranches. They have a particularly large exhibit of different types of firearms as well as buildings which primarily date from the early to mid 1800 s through the 1920 s. I can t even imagine the logistics involved in moving these structures. It s very well done and impressive. If you plan on viewing the buildings, just know that there are a lot of them (over 40) and there s not a whole lot of shade. Be sure to bring water, sunscreen and maybe an umbrella for sun protection. Also, it would be nice if they offered guided tours from an open air vehicle for people who have trouble walking or at least have a wheelchair available. Overall, it s a very good museum.

Fairly cool place. One trip is sufficient, however. Its not usually busy. Just stay away during the holiday light show. Way too many people wandering aimlessly in the darkness. EDIT: After visiting several more times, because theres nothing else to do in Lubbock, I stand behind my four star review. This place really is pretty cool. Plenty of neat exhibits and a great gift shop as well. I forgot to mention the BEST PART. Its completely free to get in! Take the family here in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the sweltering heat.

We thought an hour or so here would be fun, instead we spent half a day and it was worth every minute of it. Being from the mid-west we had no clue about the history of ranching, now we do. Theyve done an amazing job of telling the story of western ranching.

A really good place to take the family for an afternoon walk. The museum is almost completely outdoors. So bring screen, good shoes and some sunglasses because you will be doing quite a bit of walking. Excellent for a history fan wanting to see how the area developed over time! Really cool place to check out. And better yet - its free admission!

It is a nice museum, but be aware that THE OUTSIDE CLOSES AT 4pm; the inside stays open until 5. Now, I know all of yall go there to see the tiny inside portion, but not we, and were disappointed when we got there at a quarter to 4 to find out they close the outside at 4. We are from Oklahoma, so we arent here for a long time, and we were disappointed to find out the real hours. The guy at the desk laughed at us about it.

My favorite thing they do is around Christmas time. They do a candlelight walk thru the whole outside. Its lit up and in each house they have characters acting out what it was like to live in the era. Very nice to bring the kids and reflect on history. Also they have a live band and hot coco and hot apple cider to keep warm. I enjoy it have been going the past 2 years now.

Theres so much history to see and learn about here. Outside, there are real farm buildings filled with time accurate furniture, tools, etc. Inside, there are smaller and more weather sensitive items on display with descriptions as well as written historical information. Related paintings and sculptures can also be found inside. As a historical museum, this is one of the biggest and best Ive ever seen. Everything is extremely well maintained and theres so much to see that it takes a few hours to get though. I really cant believe its free.

Your website & tv ad said Junior Rough Rider event was this weekend Oct 21st. We had three excited kids with us when upon arrival at Tech they told us it is next weekend Oct 28th. In a city as large as Lubbock you would think dates would be correct on the Ranching Heritage website & on tv ads!
