About the Company

rating: 4.1

The Republic of the Río Grande® Museum is housed in one of Laredo’s oldest structures located on San Agustín Plaza in downtown Laredo. The museum is a Mexican vernacular structure, constructed in 1830 with an 1860 addition. It was once the home of Bartolomé García, prominent rancher and mayor of Laredo. According to tradition, in 1840, the structure served as the capitol of the Republic of the Río Grande. The Museum is considered a historic house museum which features displays recreating an authentic c.1830 home in Laredo.

Small but interesting. I did not know the history of the Republic of Rio Grande. We had a great conversation with the guy in the front and he was very helpful in explaining the history.

Small museum will take about 20 minutes to see. Its $3, which is not bad. I have to say that I had never heard of the Republic of the Rio Grande. It is surprising this topic is not covered at all in school--even as a passing note. Its a simple museum, but I was enamored by the history.

Interesting little museum located on the old church square in Laredo. The museums exhibits tell a colorful story of a short lived, mid 19th century republic and why this area boasts of seven flags over Texas. The building housing the museum dates to that era. Worth a visit.

I would call it a hidden gem here in Laredo, has some great information about Laredo, but what I enjoyed was all the artifacts they have there. Streets of Laredo by Marty Robins would greatly add to the atmosphere!

The lady at the front desk was a sweet-heart, very helpful, answer all my questions......but, I give only get 2 stars because, I was confused about the upliftment and glorification of the Conquistadors throughout the museum.

The best little must see of early TEXAS history. Confederate history and Laredo TX history. Great building I hope they restore the roof on soon. Cost 2 bucks but worth more. I liked everything about it and will return some day.

Enough to learn about part of the history of Laredo, it is a very small museum and so far the only one in Laredo, which is sad since there is a lot of history to learn and make known to locals and tourists.

Please mark this review as helpful. Visited Laredo this weekend and was looking for cultural places to explore. I was somewhat disappointed in the contents of this musuem but for only a $2 donation, I really didnt feel cheated. Its an actual home from like the 1800s or something. The receptionist was very polite and I purchased post cards to support. It only has 3 rooms but learned new information about the city of Laredo.

A very nice place where I came across a lot of Mexican family, of course you are. It is no longer the land of the Mexicans but much of its history is told by them. I think this place is very interesting, although it is very small, it keeps a large amount of historical data both about the American nation as well as the old nation that included all of Mexico, the people of the place are also very charismatic, I liked the climate and I also really liked the manner and treatment of the North Americans.
