The bats start come fly around under the bridge just before sunset (when we were there they started flying under the bridge around 8 and sunset was 8:30) they did not come out from the bridge in the big wave as some videos and pictures showed. But they came out in much smaller clumps. It was still fun to watch them fly around full of energy and excitement!

You can view the flight from the platform or grassy knoll, even on top of the bridge. Theres a walking path that take you down to see underneath. There is a smell.

Unbelievable experience. The place is quiet and has some lights under the bridge so you are safe to walk beneath it. The smell is strong so staying away is suggested, but you are really able to watch the bats living their home as soon as the night falls. Watch out for cyclists and guys in scooters that do not slow down even when there is people watching the bats show.

Fun experience. It was recommended to come 30 minutes before sunset, but at least for us the bats didnt start flying until after sunset. Theres a few viewing spots, the platform, grass on the slope, other side across the bayou, or directly on the bridge, which will probably offer you the best view. The walkway is pretty wide, but you are still close to traffic speeding past, and many of them honking (not sure why). Also, if you pay attention, you might notice a few hawks flying high above waiting to snatch up unsuspecting bats once they come out. We were able to find street parking nearby, and just a few minutes walk from the viewing platform. There were still a few spots left, so not a bad idea to arrive early anyways.

Beautiful area with lots of good bat flight viewing spots on both sides of the river. Bats came out for us about 10 minutes past sunset, which was pretty accurate to the emergence time we had researched. Check the sunset time - this is more accurate than 7:30pm, 8pm, etc. Bats dont use a clock - they use the sun. It was pretty windy (20mph ish, with heavy gusting) and we were worried that might deter them, but they still came! The flight was wave after wave, and beautiful and mesmerizing. We saw a hawk grab a snack in the middle of it too. Parking is challenging unless you arrive very early. There is some street parking and a small free parking lot along the water bank, but we ended up using a nearby parkade Stages that was a short walk and reasonable rates. Nearby shops are all have signage warning of towing cars for bat watching, and we saw ticketers patrolling so we didnt risk it.

We were disappointed. We smelled a lot of bats, read about them but never saw them fly. We stayed 45 minutes past sunset. It was windy last night, April 2. Idk why they didnt soar. Maybe the wind interfered? No tickets needed. It was not over crowded. The temperature was about 58.

Went to visit the Waugh Drive Bat Colony few days back. We reached there 1 hour before the sunset. There was no street parking adjacent to the bat colony so we parked at the visitor parking of the parking lot located in the middle of America Tower and Whole Foods on the Waugh Drive and walked down the Bat colony. There are 4 places from where you can witness to bat colony. 1. From over the bridge, 2. From the viewing platform at the southeast corner of the bayou bank, next to the bridge (along Allen Parkway) and 3. From the northeast bank of the bayou, near the bridge(near Memorial Drive). 4. Go for the Bat Colony boat tour. The first 3 options are free of cost. For boat tour I guess it is $30 per person. At first we went to the viewing platform. That place has a very weird smell, maybe from bat poops. During sunset thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats comes out from under the bridge and fly around for 15-20 minutes or so. Our view was obstructed by the trees so we decided to see the bat flying from the bridge. To my opinion the bridge view is far better. So before visiting the bat colony make sure it is a warm day and there is no raining. If you are in Houston and visiting you should definitely go for this place.

They were afraid they may get pooped on, lol. Also, I watched an Otter and a neat looking bird i havent identified in the bayou. Good thing to do for free.

Even though my experience didn t live up to my expectations, I m not gonna rate it anything lower than 4 starts, it s nature, can t complain. Got there 30 min before the sunset, but bats didn t come out until maybe an hour after I got there (it was already dark, around 8pm). Never saw them flying all together, it was more like in small groups. You could definitely see them and hear them under the bridge (smell them too lol). So I guess that day just didn t work out for bats, and most of the people waiting for them left early or disappointed. If you go there, just be prepared to wait and don t get your hopes up. If you see them - great, if you don t, well, enjoy the sunset.

Pretty cool talking to the Bat conservationist under the bridge. Who knew so many bats would be wedged in those crevices...almost 300,000. This is a very small colony compared to colonies of millions in other parts of TX. They swarmed around in stages when they came out then flew out into the sunset to be replaced by another group emerging from the crevices. Nearby hawks and heron were also waiting for them to come out.

Ive been living in Houston for 35 years, and I cant believe this is the first time Ive experienced this. Sitting on the lawn watching the bats fly out as they feasted on a buffet of critters was amazing, but do yourself a favour and spend some time under the bridge. Bats arent interested in you, so youre perfectly safe as you are serenaded by a unique white noise orchestrated by an insurmountable number of bats that call the fissures in the bridge home. What a beautiful experience right in the heart of the city I call home.

The bat colony is known, but not ubiquitously. Always a fun spot to enjoy the sunset and watch the bats! We park down at Lost Lake visitor center and then a short stroll along the sidewalk on the bayou takes you to the bridge where the bats hang out. You can walk under the bridge and smell the very pungent smell from them or walk along the upper sidewalk across the street and walk down the hillside where you can sit. We brought a blanket but others just enjoyed sitting on the grass. Others had their dogs with them or were very prepared with folding chairs and picnics. They came out at 8:31. It was very interesting to see the swarm come out. So many bats!!! I am not sure if they exit in the same direction each time. If you are wanting to get them on video you can wait up until the moment you see a few come out under the bridge this will be the beginning of the mass exodus. Enjoy

finally saw the bats yesterday. it was pretty cool, to read about bats and see them flying away as a large group. the bats came out right about 8pm ish and lasted for about 5-10min. i think if you are coming here for bats, you might as well checkout the bayou. i didnt have to worry about parking but parking can be crazy during both weekends or weekdays. below photo isnt the best, i recommend you taking a video. i took a video as well but it wont let me post here?..

At dusk people sit to watch the show. Thousands of bats come out to eat. (insects) can be seen for about 15 minutes. The place is special for jogging and exercising
