A fascinating museum on the history of oil drilling. You can see first hand what life on a rig is like. See how the oil industry has progressed since the beginning. Weather permitting you can even walk out on to the oil rig itself! Fun for all ages and very interesting place to visit. Right in the wharf, so beautiful views are a bonus.

It s a very nice place with clear explanation of many processes in the oil drilling industry. It s clean and has a lot of details. It would be better to have a tour guide that goes with visitors to answer questions and give more info when needed. The outdoor place is a bit small with no demonstrations of the equipment operation

Visiting the Houston Texas area with refineries everywhere, we wanted to learn more about the oil industry. Overall, we enjoyed a visit to Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig. Pros: Museum is a small, 3 story drilling platform anchored in Galveston port, close to the cruise terminal. The museum only charges a small fee and staff was very friendly. Visitors can easily get a basic understanding about the history and mechanics of oil drilling in about an hour. Actual equipment is displayed, and there is an introductory movie. From the gangway leading up to the museum and the outside areas, visitors have a beautiful view of the passing sightseeing and fishing boats and a large number of pelicans sitting on the nearby rocks. When we visited, there was plenty of cheap street parking close by. Cons: There is a large amount of reading throughout the museum, and it could be tedious. If I went back, I would probably spend the extra money for the audio guide. The air conditioning is really loud. Why do I care? When the air came on, it became really difficult to hear the video clips playing throughout the museum unless you are standing super close. The museum feels a little dated and in my opinion, the large gallery of famous Texas oil men and innovators was somewhat strange to me. Naturally, the display puts a very positive spin on the environmental impact of drilling. Overall, I would be recommend for anyone with an interest in science.

Very detailed and thoughtful laid out exhibit to explain how we get oil out of the ground. You get to see all the parts of the process. The scale models inside of all the platforms were amazing! Its 3 levels with steep stairs but they have added an elevator You get to go outside on top and feel what its like to work on a rig.

The Ocean Star is retired jack-up drilling rig that operated in the Gulf of Mexico from 1969 to 1984 and drilled over 200 wells during that timeframe. In 1995, the OEC purchased the Ocean Star, and after lengthy refurbishment, opened it as a museum in 1997. The museum is designed to be a self-guided facility with videos, information, interactive exhibits throughout, and takes most visitors about 1.5 hours to tour completely. I visited this Museum with my family. it is a small museum for the number of activities happening in the offshore oil industry, but a very good insight for those who are not familiar with the Operations of Offshore Oil exploration, drilling and production. Having worked in the industry for long, I could really appreciate the scaled models, true in shape to the real versions, covering almost all the major areas. A good opportunity to see what is happening, which people get no chance to know or visit being offshore or mostly under water. It is also a chance to visit an actual drilling rig as the whole facility is located on it, A must see for those new entrants in this area of work. I understand that the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig Museum is available for weddings, corporate conferences, luncheons, dinners, and family reunions. Overnight Camp is also offered on the fourth Friday or fourth Saturday of each month for groups of 17 or more.

An interesting look into the operation of offshore oil drilling. It was however a corporate PC sort of propaganda. They never used the word oil, it was called hydrocarbons. There was no mention of spills or any environmental damage done or cleanups. There was however, a model of the Deepwater Horizon. No mention about it fate.

Absolutely awful place ran by inept lazy people. Several times my family and I have tried to come here to experience the museum that pays homage to an industry that I and so many others in my family have been a part of. Every single time we are told something has come up and no tickets are available/some other random issue. I called ahead today and was told if I got here by 4 I would be able to get tickets. I arrived by 3:57 and was once again told sorry, their system s time was 4:01 so therefore I would not be able to buy tickets. How ironic is it that an industry built by hard working dedicated people has a museum that is anything but hard working or dedicated.

I was shocked and disappointed to find the museum was filled with plug-in air freshners. I am highly allergic and so are many other people. When I talked to the manager he admitted it was his decision because he wants the place to smell nice. After 15 minutes, I had a bad headache and was having difficulty breathing. I dont understand making such a careless decision when it is completely unnecessary. Many people suffer from chemical sensitivity. My money was refunded. I would have preferred to have stayed and visited the museum, which in all honesty, from the 15 minutes I was there, felt a bit like propaganda to promote the oil industry, yet it was fascinating.

This Museum is as a work of art to human engineering potential and the brilliance of a select few. The knowledge and sculptures within this Rig is truly impressive. Come over if your a nerd, and if you can become easily lost in all the marvels humans of the past have built to pump oil from the Earth. But even still, I still cant help but feel sadden at the reason this wonder and many like it were built for. To maintain our way of life, or suppress a more eco-friendly society. This is one of the more interesting museums that Ive been to and I recommend it. It takes an hour or less to walk through and is great for all ages. However, due to the nature of it being an actual rig, it is not very wheelchair friendly. However, I was frustrated after arriving at 4:03pm and being denied entrance due to their closing at 5pm. Having toured this many times I know an hour is more than enough time to go through this museum. While I understand the need for the policy the museum should sell tickets with the understanding that by 4:55pm you must be walking out of the museum. It was incredibly frustrating to drive over 100 miles to arrive here and have Houston traffic make us 3 minutes to late to walk through. Another couple had the same issue as us. This also meant we paid $7 to park only to be denied entry. I would hope the policies might be more forgiving in the future, but truly recommend adding this on your list of interesting and educational museums to visit!

You can watch a 15 minute video that explains the processes and history of the oil industry in the gulf. You then get to walk a 3 story rig that has models, as well as real artifacts from oil rigs. Getting to walk on the drilling floor and learn about various machinery that makes an oil rig operate was very interesting, even to 2 people that are not in the oil and gas industry. Id highly recommend everyone to stop in and support this incredible non-profit museum.

Let me start by saying we didn t actually get to your the museum/oil rig. We showed up at 10:30 am on a Saturday, after checking the hours online & on the website. We paid to park, got inside to buy tickets & were told there was a private event & the museum was closed to the public for the day. The private event appeared to be grilling and food tents outside, near the water. 4 other groups were also looking to tour the museum and one even mentioned having already purchased their tickets online. Like us, they were only here 2 days. Had there been ANY information online we all could have toured the day before. Disappointing & unprofessional to say the least. Unless the Private Party is a group of retired Oil Rig workers being honored in some way, I don t understand closing the museum on a weekend during a very busy time.

This is the ONLY place we wanted to visit in Galveston. Arrived and there was a sign on the door said closed May 22-June 4. That info wasnt listed on theyre website ANYWHERE. Websites are where people go for INFORMATION! Why they didnt list this little detail is beyond me. VERY disappointed to say the least.

Fantastic stop Very well priced at 10$ Very educational, I come from the oil field and learned a lot about off shore drilling Definitely one of my favorite stops in Galveston it s great for the whole family And the gift shop has unique items for the oilfield that you do not see in many places A lot of history and cut-aways with extensive explanations of how things work.
