Galveston Naval Museum

About the Company

rating: 4.7

Home to the USS Cavalla, a decommissioned submarine, one of the most accomplished World War II vessels open to the public today, and the destroyer escort, USS Stewart, once the presidential escort to FDR, and the last of its class in the world. Both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Touring both vessels, you'll learn what sailors and submariners ate, how they slept and worked together as a fighting force over the Atlantic and under the Pacific. Visitors to the museum at Seawolf Park can round out a tour of the sub and the destroyer escort with fishing in the bay or playing in the park. We are more than a WWII museum. We are an educational center and unique venue for sleepovers, private events and special occasions.

Get the chance to explore not one but two WWII vessels. The USS Cavalla and the USS Stewart are on display here and are interactive museums. Go down into the hulls of the destroyer ship and submarine. It is fascinating to explore first hand what it would be like to be inside these vessels. Highly recommend for anyone interested in ships or submarines, history, and wars.

I tooky three daughters and three grandkids to the museum. We spent a lot of time immersed in the history. It was amazing to get to tour the battleship and the submarine. We come from a very patriotic family but felt that this was extortion just to see the ships our service men served on for our country. It was $71 dollars and if you have to leave you pay an additional $10 just to reenter to parking lot. The sub was very warm inside and had a foul odor. The vessels along the harbor are extremely rusted and anyone could accidentally get hurt on it if you aren t careful, a liability waiting to happen I m sure. Not sure what you are using all the money for but it isn t to keep the vessels in order or the parking lot harbor for smelling of a sewer (not exaggerating). Disappointed at the disrespect toward the men who have served our country.

Awesome time, loved it all. I was a little taken back by the girl at the front not accepting my word that I was in the Navy, she needed proof. My kiddos enjoyed it a lot they got to imagine what it would be like out in the water and they discussed scenarios for each of the rooms they explored. They liked going down the ladder to the bunk area and to the top of the ship to explore. 10 dollar parking and 13 per person to view and walk on the ships. It was super hot, there was a covered picnic table and large fan for a resting spot. Also air conditioned rest rooms.

They asked me to scrub rust and spray bleach with next to no PPE for $12 an hour. Lol. Lucky if this place lasts another 10 years. The director, Eric, or however he spelled his name, is just there for a check. The board is there for the recognition. Neither of them care about the ship, just what the reputation of said ship brings them. Google the pictures and save yourselves the $13+ $7 that they don t mention for parking.

The submarine is incredible (especially if you are small and like watching your tall friends suffer) with tons of interesting historical details sprinkled throughout. They also have a very well-done women of WWII exhibit in the seaport. The battleship is meh. Many sections are not accessible to the standard visitor and there are no arrows or general guidance on the ship, so I was constantly worried I would miss a section. Nonetheless, the submarine and the historical displays around the seaport more than make up for the ships shortfalls.

The museum was amazing and we loved how they had a discount for vets! We learned so much about the ships history and spent hours reading every sign, would highly recommend to anyone looking for something to do in Galveston. The reason for my 2 star rating is because on our way out we stopped at the gift shop and I joking put a hat on my head for not even 2 second and was told that I have to buy it because of the sign . We both looked around and didn t see a sign. She pointed in front of us and be looked again and didn t see anything. After just spending a so long looking at every tiny sign around the museum , I was surprised we didn t see anything. She then pointed to a tiny label from a label maker in the most atrocious font near the hat prices. We were going to buy the patch of the submarine we loved so much but after having to pay 10+ dollars for a hat we didn t even want it just soured the whole trip so we put it back. I m not upset by the policy and I can even understand the policy, but a policy is only effective if the customer is able to be aware of it, they need to make a larger sign so people see that when they come in. It s extremely frustrating and looking back on it we should ve just walked out of not even bought that hat, but I d loved the museum so much that despite the customer service at the end that we just paid an left. As long as your aware before u go into the gift shop, then you guys should have a great time. I m not sure I would be coming back just from that experience unfortunately.

Very claustrophobic and especially if you go in the submarine, but other than that it is intimidating experience at first sight but once you navigate it, it becomes enjoyable, and also the small but invitingly friendly community surrounding and in this area is a amazing group of people in which I assure at some point you will make friends with.

Well worth the Groupon cost to visit and catch a well preserved glimpse of history while visiting Galveston.

Im glad I visited this museum and experienced the inside of USS Cavalla. Its incredible how our sailors managed with those conditions during war. True heros!

Great submarine and destroyer to visit... but our trip last Saturday was ruined by a very racist and rude staff member aboard the destroyer... he yelled at us and hounded us to leave at 5pm due to us being non white... but he was polite and kind to the locals. Management, please take action on such racist staff.

Came here as a fill-in while in Galveston. Im glad I did. Self tour through a sub and a battleship escort. Mike was great. Very proud of the displays and the volunteers.
