Bishop’s Palace

About the Company

rating: 4.6

Please Note: Last tour tickets are sold at 4 p.m. The 1892 Bishop’s Palace, also known as the Walter and Josephine Gresham House, is one of Galveston Island’s best known and most popular tourist attractions. Bishop’s Palace is recognized as one of the nation’s most important late 19th century Victorian residences. Nicholas Clayton, Texas’ most accomplished architect of the period, designed the house for the Gresham family. In 1921, Galvestonians raised money to buy the house for the Galveston-Houston Archdiocese to make it the home of Bishop Byrne. GHF purchased the property in 2013 from the Galveston-Houston Archdiocese. The foundation is the third owner of the property and assumed management in 2007.

Loved the volunteers! The self guided tour with the headsets was amazing. I learned so much and at my own pace. The beauty of the place is outstanding. I would suggest they hold events like a wine and chocolate night. Just to get more support to keep this place as is for always!

I enjoyed my visit. Staff was friendly. $15 for adults. The entrance is to the left under the main stairs. If you want to see the attic and basement come on special guided tour Saturdays. I went on a Sunday around 2:30ish. Took about an hour to tour the house. I was free to roam and look around unbothered. Victorian home has lots of decorative details as expected. You are given an electronic device to push at each station, but it was too low for me to hear. It is very hot in the house. Which I didn t like. They do have window units and fans but the house is still considerably very hot. But overall it was nice to visit if you want to see a Victorian home from the inside. You don t need a reservation. As long as you walk in and get your ticket before 4 or an hour before closing, you re good.

We stopped at this place by chance while on vacation searching for things to do In galveston and were very pleased its an amazing piece of history to walk through and see. You see so much personality and art and faith in the decor and construction of the house especially the main floor staircase its breathtaking much more than we expected upon arrival. The souvenir shop in the basement also has many nice things to look at and buy! The young blonde man with glasses working there at the time of our visit was extremely kind and informative, after our tour of the house he even provided us with a few locations of some places to eat which turned out to be amazing! A great place for families and people who love history.

This is a must see in your bucket list pricing comprobable to the surrounding business. If you stopped at Moody Gardens they have a flyer for $6 off. I would love in the future if there was an app and you can select the room numbers so we can use our AirPods instead of the self audio box after purchasing tickets. For those that rather use their cell phones instead of carrying the self guide audio

The Bishops Palace is definetly worth seeing. The grandness of this place is amazing for back when it was built. The wood work is beautiful. The staircase is so neat and the big windows to let in sunlight. Each room has its own fireplace. So glad this place survived the hurricane of the early 1900s. This self guided tour is a definite go if you enjoy seeing historical sights.

The house itself is decent, but the lady doing the audio guides was quite rude today. We had an odd number and she refused to give us another audio guide (the third person asked and the response was you dont get one). The audio guide is barely sharable with two folks, unworkable for three. Theres enough on the paper guide or on signs in the house to keep busy while waiting for two other people to use the audio guide. Would not recommend until they figure out their audio guide (and attitude) problem.

I would have given this 5 stars however, when we arrived on 2/5/24, I asked the cashier if there were any discounts for seniors and he said no and didn t tell us that if were buying tickets for both Bishop s Palace and Moody Mansion we would have gotten a discount. A couple minutes after I paid him I noticed a sign that offered a discount and I asked if I could get that option, he said, no it s too late. When we got to Moody Mansion I mentioned that we were at Bishop s Palace but they also would not provide a discount. However, the lady at Moody Mansion said they should have been able to exchange the ticket at Bishop s Palace and she couldn t understand why he would not have exchanged the tickets and offered us the discount for both venues.

Absolutely breathtakingly beautiful American Mansion Palace that we had a guided tour during Christmas that provided so much history on a lot of Christmas traditions that are still used today. The different Christmas trees throughout the palace and the history of each was so enlightening. Our tour guide (Ras?) made the history lessons memorable and interesting. One couple we spoke with during the tour, grew up in one of the only other two houses that survived the flood (1313) and the house next door was owed by his aunt (1309). I found the extensive hand carved woodworking throughout the palace, surprisingly warm and inviting; maybe because of the ceiling heights and size of the rooms. Will rtn during summer to tour the entire palace.

Absotely stunning on the outside. We did not get to see the inside because our service was denied by a very rude and insulting service desk person named Veronica (she couldve been lying for all we know). We paid ahead of time before 4pm, we saw this historic landmark and had just gotten to our hotel, took an uber to the palace, and was rudely denied a look inside the mansion when it is open til 5pm and we arrived slightly after 4pm. There were still many people inside. There is also a way to talk to people, and from the start Veronica was aggressive and vulgar. I came with family, we are from Chicago. Veronica also said she wouldnt help us get a refund. It was terrible. I hope that someday i can come back and experience this with someone who is actually passionate about showing it to people.
