This place is inside the base so you need to have access to enter. There s a large parking lot next to it. Entrance is free. Just sign your name in the visitor log. There was no wait.

Visited the quadrangle at Ft. Sam. They have a great museum. It will take several times to get thru and read every thing at museum. Of course the peacocks are gorgeous. They also have ducks, geese and saw a turkey. There is a huge old oak tree. If you are a history buff this is a must. If you go, must get a visitors pass at visitor center. You will need your photo ID, car insurance, and car registration (or a pic of it). If there are graduations happening it will take awhile to get visitor pass. Its free.

Everyone in San Antonio had the opportunity to visit the quad fort Sam was very open to everyone in San Antonio children all grew up the air force took over fort Sam security its very mean. Sad reality that the Marines was doing drugs in 4th recon during the Iraq War. Peace and Harmony are found in a republic for the people not an exclusive oligarchy like the Marines. Comanche would go around murdering Mexicans the union troops would act like the police of the region. Fort Sam Houston been very distant the army took off without shooting a single bullet when the confederacy took over San Antonio. Aka Afghanistan.

Nice relaxing place to read or just watch the birds/ deer in the area. Cool place to take the kids or family if theyve never seen peacocks. Careful with the wildlife, they will approach if they suspect food. Nice place to get nature shots.

An interesting place is located within a military installation that is Fort Sam Houston, but it is open to the public. By visiting the museum you can learn a lot about the history of this installation over time. It has a central garden where you can rest and relax while deer and peacocks walk by.

Fantastic museum. The exhibit contained a lot of interesting facts and highlighted things I ve never seen a museum do before. For example, they had 3 items on display from WW2 and explained the legal distinction on how these items were obtained. Most museums will just display the items but not given any insight behind how they were obtained

HOW UNACCEPTABLE. Plans and reservations were set WELL IN ADVANCE WITH INVITES to our friends retirement ceremony and the FACILITY LAST MINUTE CANCELLED HER CEREMONY WITHOUT PERMISSION to accommodate a higher ranking officer. UNSAT AND UNPROFESSIONAL I dont care who you are this is absolutely shameful.

Horrible! A friend made a reservation for her well-deserved military retirement ceremony here and the venue confirmed her reservation and she spread the word about the ceremony. Only for the venue to give out her personal contact information without her permission so she could be called and harassed about changing her date because - why? Oh, a general wanted to have their retirement ceremony on that date. Then the museum just cancelled her reservation! I m so embarrassed for this general, I don t care what my rank is when I retire, over my dead body will I kick another deserving service member out of their own retirement ceremony! The people who handled this should be ashamed of themselves.

Beautiful place right on the base, large museum that covers the history of Texas military. Inside the Quadrangle there are many peacocks, and deer, and koi fish in the pond. There are some picnic tables under the big oak tree. The pace is free to visit.

Great quiet and casual place to go and experience nature. They have many types of geese and a beautiful pond area. They also have several deer that roam the grounds and several peacocks. You can bring bird seed, or other healthy bird snacks, but don t bring dangerous food like bread and crackers for the water fowl. I didn t see anyone feeding the deer so I don t know what is permitted there. Saw many families and a wide variety of ages. There was even a family sitting on the grass with a large blanket, it looked peaceful. I remember coming here as a child and loving it, it s still a nice place to go, many years later.

Very enjoyable experience. Staff was super friendly and helpful. The museum was larger than I expected and has a lot of fascinating items and information. We didnt give ourselves enough time to finish, so thats a good reason to return. In addition to the history of Fort Sam Houston, its good for those interested in other early Texas forts, and the development of Texas and San Antonio. I learned, for example, about Camp John Wise, a US Army Balloon Corps base in WWI, that was right down the street from where I live in SA. The Quadrangle itself is also nice, with peacocks roaming around, a beautiful historic oak, the tower, etc. Entrance is free but non-military need to get a pass at the main Visitors Center near I-35 and Walters St., so allow time for that.

Very nice historic place in the heart of San Antonio. Geronimo and his followers were held there for a while, while his fate was decided and he was eventually sent to federal prison in Florida. There are deer and peacocks walking around. Maybe one day Ill meet LTG Laura Richardson. Shes a legend in the Army. That Quad is free.

The museum is inside a military base. The admission is free but you need to get a permit from the visitor center first, which is a few miles away. To get the permission is easy, driver licenses and car insurance are required. There is no clear sign where the museum is although it is very close to the entrance. The museum has some old weapons and explains the history of this place. Outside the building, there are fears and peacocks.

Visited the Fort Sam Houston Quadrangle and the Museum on 11/26. It was an enjoyable experience, our kids loved it. Peacocks and ducks in the park create a serene environment that you would enjoy all day long. You can bring food for them, but no bread or popcorns.... :) The only inconvenience is that the general public with no military ID require a visitors pass which can only be acquired, for free, from the SAMMC Visitor Center, San Antonio, TX 78219 which is like 4 miles from the museum. Nonetheless, it was worth it! When you go to the Visitor Center to get a pass, take a pic of your cars registration (for TX), car insurance, and state issued IDs for all 18+ folks in the group.

This is a truely underated gem of San Antonio. Besides being an important landmark with a rich and storied history, Historic Fort Sam Houston is a breathtakingly beautiful sanctuary where gentle deer and peacocks roam free as people go about their business. You can take a walk through the museum to learn the history of the fort and see everything from authentic uniforms to antique firearms and even a short film, should you choose to watch it. From the museum, bags of feed are available to feed the deer and peacocks as you walk the grounds. You can snap a picture in front of the clock tower where, as legend has it, Geronimo was once held prisoner. This is also a great location for a small picnic. Historic Fort Sam Houston is operated and maintained jointly by the US Army and US Air Force however, it is still open to the public, and entrance to both the fort and the museum is 100% FREE, the only thing that costs any money is the animal feed which is only a few dollars. Historic Fort Sam Houston is a great place to take the kids for an afternoon adventure or to take your SO for part of a low-cost date. I highly recommend it.

I love Ft. Sam Houston. There is an army museum thats open to the public on one of the wings as entering the sallyport it is on the right hand side, same side as the duck pond.

Awesome! Waited 45min for a visitor pass with 3 toddlers, fun lol. But totally worth it. We bought feed at the museum and took a quick walk through of the displays of uniforms and old weapons to get to the bathrooms. Cool and I dont care about military history. There was a 1941 movie playing in the museum that was partly filmed in the Quadrangle, very cool. Then went out and had like 10-15 peacocks following us around for food, some will eat out of your hand, turning your head to the side so they can only see one eye will help them trust that youre not a predator. Same with the deer. They have a hard time seeing food in the grass, a little better at seeing it on the road. Deer are friendly, they love the kids because they are shorter. So take a knee before they turn away from you, hold out your hand, head to the side. They will come to you if they want food. Please take your trash with you!

I came here with my family on Christmas Day, I have family that live in post and know the area very well. The history of the Quadrangle is displayed through out the area. Dont forget to watch for the small group of deer, geese and peacocks that roam free here. Definitely a nice an relaxing place to visit if you are into Texas/Military history. There is also a museum here, but I did not get a chance to check it out.
