I went to see Dr. Tolhurst after I exhausted all other methods for relief from the sciatic nerve pain I was experiencing. It was so bad I could barely walk at times and working as a medical professional was even more challenging. Dr. Tolhurst went over all my imaging and had to give me the unfortunate news that I had to have surgery. I am now 5 months post-op and havent felt this good since I was a teenager! I am back to competing on my Barrel Racing horses as well as soccer and working out!! Its so great to be living pain free! Thank you to Dr. Tolhurst and his medical staff.

I highly recommend Texas Back Institute! I have been a patient of Dr. Tolhursts since 2015. Recently I had disc replacement in my neck. Dr. Tolhurst was very caring throughout the whole process. Over the years, he has tried different options with me so I could avoid surgery as long as possible. He absolutely cared about getting me back on my feet!! He is the best doctor I have seen in years. I always felt heard in the office, he takes the time to make sure you are comfortable and educated about your care from him. Spine surgery is very scary but with Dr. Tolhurst you cant go wrong! I highly recommend giving him a call for any spinal issues you have!! He should be your 1st call!!

Dr. Tolhurst and his team performed a 5 level Laminectomy on me and entire experience thus far has been superb. Though I m still healing, no issues have occurred thus far. I had 2 major spine surgeries in 3 days by Dr. Tolhurst to correct scoliosis. He did an awesome job. My back is now straight and I gained over 2 inches in height. I was apprehensive to have any surgery let alone spinal surgery since it would be my first ever surgery but Dr. Tolhurst and his staff put my mind at ease answering all my questions and addressing all my concerns. The surgery went very well and I m finishing up my physical therapy which I recommend. I am 90% better than prior to my surgery and working towards 100%. Probably my only regret is balking and not having the surgery sooner.

I have gone to Dr. T. a few times now as I have a back that goes out every year or two since I have 2 bad discs. Luckily, I found a doctor that takes the time to hear my issue, explains possible fixes, and is honest in his assessment. He also have an amazing staff of nurses that do everything they can to make you comfortable. While back pain can be scary, he and his team make it much less so. They seem to understand and, most important, get me back to my life in a very short period of time.

Dr. Tolhurst was amazing, professional, and informative. He explained my MRI results and also allowed me to try the epidural steroid injections before surgery, even though he had told me they wouldn t work. He was right. He explained my surgical procedure, talked about risks and made me feel like he was there to help me have a better life than I had been having due to pain. The surgical procedure was perfect. By the second post op day, when I got up to walk, I had zero pain from what I had sought out the surgery for. Dr. Tolhurst came to see me after the procedure. He sincerely is one of the most empathetic, kind and amazing surgeons I ve ever had. I have told all my friends and family about him. Thanks to him, I am back to being me. I will never be able to thank him for what he did for me.

Dr. Tolhurst performed a complex cervical fusion on me in 2016 had to remove hardware from past surgeries, and correct new issues. I knew going in that I would require more surgeries in the future once we ve gotten all the mileage we can out of parts that were damaged years ago, and doomed to fail eventually. Well, I m afraid one of those areas has given out, and never even considered going back to the two previous surgeons, nor seeking a new one. The staff has always been very friendly and helpful as well. I have 100% complete confidence, in he and his staff, and that comes from someone normally very mistrusting of doctors. Thanks

I researched, interviewed, and spoke with numerous spine surgeons prior to choosing Dr Tolhurst. I could not be happier with the knowledge, expertise and the professionalism Dr Tolhurst displays for all of his patients. I understand NO ONE wants spine surgery!! That being said, there is one person I would trust on my back and it s Dr Tolhurst. He did disk replacement on me, also on my mother in law, and neck fusion on my best friend. We have all been pleased and I cannot recommend him highly enough should you need a spine surgeon

Let me be clear. I am not a patient; however, my mother is. I dont understand why it takes months for her to receive an appointment for visits or procedures, and that is after she places several calls to the office. Today, she arrives at the surgery center at 6am only to be told that Dr.Tollhurst canceled the procedure because he didnt like the machine. No prior notice. I would think he knew the equipment beforehand and had plenty of time to notify us of the change. I am upset because my mother is in severe pain and its seems he (or his staff) dont really care. She was devastated today when she was turned away. She has Medicare. Could it be that the office punishes her for that and puts her needs behind all commercial insurance patients? From my perspective that is how it works. It is difficult for me to see the pain she is in and feel this doctor and staff have no intention of helping her.

Wonderful doctor. He placed the cortisone just so at my L5 and I was pain free for 5 years. The shot finally wore off and he repeated it recently to my perfect satisfaction. I told him I appreciated all the many years of study and training that he put into becoming the fine doctor tht he is.

Dr. Tolhurst has performed 3 surgeries on my spine since 2013. He has been amazing and the work he did in the first 2 surgeries has been life changing. While the third surgery on my t-spine did not produce the life changing results I had wished for, Dr. Tolhurst was very upfront and honest about the potential outcome never offering false hope or promises. I had excruciating pain in my left shoulder and arm and I would lose feeling on and off. After having an MRI my diagnosis was C5 - C6 disk herniation with cervical spondylosis with radiculopathy and disk stenosis of the cervical canal. I had an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. I was a little nervous to have the surgery as they go through the front of the neck and pull the trachea and esophagus and artery over out of the way. Dr. Tolhurst did an excellent job and when I woke up from surgery I had immediate relief of the excruciating pain in my left shoulder and arm. I have had no problems at all and it has been six weeks since surgery.I highly recommend Dr. Tolhurst. He is personable and does an excellent job. So extremely thankful to be pain free. If you have cervical spine pain or problems schedule an appointment with Dr. Stephen Tolhurst with Texas Back Institute.

Dr. Stephen Tolhurst is the best spine doctor I have ever seen. I had back and neck problems for years. After reinjuring my neck and back in February 2020, I required fusion of both my neck and low back during 2020. I can honestly say that I havent felt this good in years! great doctor and excellent surgeon. he operated on my back five years ago and life has been fantastic ever since. no more back pain, no more pain in my legs, no more leg atrophy due to less usage, and never a single problem. we had tried both physical therapy and injections into the spine with limited success. so surgery was required -- so he tried everything available before surgery. but the surgery has been a god send. Im like a new man and Im and old man -- so dr tolhurst gave me a renewed life. if you have back issues, this is absolutely the doctor to see ....

Dr. Tolhurst is a surgical genius. So far hes performed 3 different surgical procedures on my spine. 2 on the neck and 1 major back surgery where he straightened my spine and fused 6 discs. That was an 8 hour surgery. I would not trust anyone else to repair my spine.

I last saw Dr Tolhurst around the end of 2017. He has been seeing me since 2016. He has always been very nice and helpful. He is knowledgeable and good at dumbing things down for me. I had several trigger point injections with him which really helped. I know I may need a surgery soon but am not ready yet, which he has been very respectful of. When I am ready he is who I want to do it with.
