The Plaza Theatre

About the Company

rating: 4.7

As a National Historic Building of Significance, built in 1930 and restored to its original atmospheric theater splendor in 2006, the Plaza Theatre Performing Arts Center is conveniently located in downtown El Paso-just a brief walk from the Judson F. Williams Convention Center and the Abraham Chavez Theatre. The theatre was built with Spanish Colonial Revival architecture and features intricately painted ceilings, mosaic-tiled floors, decorative metal railings and antique furniture. As one of the remaining atmospheric theaters in the United States, The Plaza conveys the illusion that viewers are seated outdoors in a Spanish courtyard.

Lovely venu with nineteenth century charm. Bathroom facilities are a bit limited, so be sure to use them before the show (a 20-mimute intermission isnt long enough for the line that forms for the ladies room). The seating on the main orchestra floor has a good slope for viewing the stage. Chairs are a good size and were plenty big for my 4XL backside. This was our first time visiting the Plaza Theatre, and well definitely want to come again.

I really liked how the Plaza Theater was so easy to get to. I have to admit that, although Im not a huge fan of most parking structures in downtown, the parking structure right across from the theater was already somewhat better than most parking structures in downtown. Its a little tricky going uphill in the structure. But once you get to the floor where you want to park, there is plenty of parking space without feeling crammed ! The Plaza Theater itself is an old building. But it has really interesting architecture, exterior design and interior design that make it very nostalgic ! The ceiling is very celestial , with a heavenly aura ! It was my first time seeing a show there ! I watched Mean Girls the musical on Sat (4/6) for the matinee showing and absolutely it ! It really brought back wonderful memories of the original 2004 movie starring Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams ! The Broadway cast was absolutely spectacular ! I purchased an orchestra seat ticket for myself since I went solo, and I got to meet and chat with a super nice family sitting next to me who have season tickets to the Plaza ! I didnt really try any of the speciality drinks or snacks ! But a lot of people were in line! I may try these on a future outing to the Plaza because they have some exciting shows and concerts coming up later this year ! Thank you for such a fantabulous first time at the Plaza Theater , El Paso Live ! I will definitely be back !

I had no idea there was a smaller theater there called the Philanthropy Theater. It was absolutely fantastic. We saw a local artist and his phenomenal puppet show called The Scarecrow. My biggest complaint is the seats are extremely small. If you are a bigger person they are not kind or forgiving. Even a small in-width person is still going to be near on top of the people next to them. The bathroom is in the basement, which is odd. Also, there are stairs everywhere, but I believe it is wheelchair accessible still. They have drinks, beer, and a few snacks.

The plaza was refurbished in 2017, and they did a great job. Its beautifully done. The mens bathroom space could be improved a little. I went to see the 50th anniversary of Kansas. If youre a fan of their music, then its worthwhile. The sound quality was very good. Its not a huge venue, but it seemed to have ample space.

I paid $200 for a show to treat myself, I arrived early, dressed according to their dress ode requirements evening attire. They made me walk around the entire building in hills after a very long walk from the parking lot to the entrance (they should definitely write comfortable walking shoes in this dress code!) then made me miss the first part of the show to demand my soldier husband whos in training be there (even though I bought the ticket myself, not sure how his name which is on my ID got there) clearly theyve never seen a military ID in this military town. So I ended up standing in hills more... A lit more.... They finally let us in & they employee that I asked for help to find my seat took my ticket, ignored me & led someone else until they started the next part & I had to stand longer in hills until it was over! Finally found my seat, & the elevation is so bad, that the guy infront of mes hat blocked the entire stage! Seriously, dont they build for people of all heights? Its the most expansive ticket very close to the stage, & I cant see because its so flat! Huge waste of money! Im going through too much, & decided to treat myself to a tinny break, & do something nice for the first time in so many years... All I got is sore feet & embraced that I obeyed their dress code. The show was incredible! But theyre international, I can go see them somewhere else if I really want to in the future. The overall experience is very disappointing! Honestly, if their dress code had prepared me saying parking is far from the door, wear comfortable walking shoes then I would have had a wonderful experience! Amazing how one very painful thing can destroy your evening before it even started

We watched Les Mis US tour performance here. It is an incredible show with an amazing tour company. However, regarding the theater experience, it is not so great. So the 2 star rating is for the teater. The worst part of the experience is that the theater keeps letting late people in during the first half hour of the show. This not only disturbs the audience, but more importantly disrespects the performers. Other than that, it is a cool theater that shows its history and age. The seats are very narrow in modern theater standards. The floor is very flat, so your view is blocked from the waist down by mostly bald heads, even when we were sitting in Row A.

We saw the movie As Good as it Gets during the classic film festival. The movie was introduced by Helen Hunt and we saw her interviewed on stage about juggling making this film and also starring in the sitcom Mad About You . Her answers sounded like anyone we know, not a high profile star. She is very down to earth and matter of fact. It was a delight to get the opportunity to hear her speak. She received a Lifetime Achievement Award presented to her before the audience. Very enjoyable evening! The entire audience was quiet and respectful when she spoke. I was escorted out by Mr. Mike Bernstein. He was super nice to me and made sure I got safely to my car after the show. OUTSTANDING IN EVERY ASPECT!!!

I was REALLY excited to see some of the Broadway shows here, but I simply can t recommend this theater because of the crowds. People showing up AFTER the show has started AND SINGING ALONG. The theater could easily solve this issue with two changes: 1) No admittance after the show starts and 2) Sing Along Sundays. If fans INSIST on singing along, then make certain screenings Sing Alongs and ALL THE OTHER SHOWS SILENT. It s extremely distracting and disrespectful to performers and the other patrons.

Here is the thing about The Plaza Theatre you cant go in thinking everything will be brand new. It is a very old building that has been restored to its historic glory. That being said the theater experience as far as attending an event is nice. The lighting is fabulous and the sound is crisp and clear. The problem is the seating is OLD and outdated. The leg space between isles was not made for someone over 58 at best. You are literally crammed in a row with all these other people and its so uncomfortable. I do love the acts they feature at the Plaza but seating needs to be updated. And as a side note it isnt handicap friendly. I struggled to get my mom from Point A to Point B with minimal discomfort. If you can get past the uncomfortable seating youll have a good time.

People were dressed in pjs and jeans, not how you would go dressed to an orchestra concert. People were walking in late. Too much talking, jeering, and clapping for every little thing as if the crowd had never seen the film. Simply put, El Paso has no class or grace. Beautiful historic theater! However, the staffs insistence to purchase tickets thru Ticketmaster frustrated me as I could not access my tickets. I was also concerned I wouldnt get them by the date of the show. I made several attempts to reach Ticketmaster to no avail. I then called the Plaza Theater box office. They cordially informed me that I could get the tickets at the box office.. I wish the Plaza theater administrators would boycott the unprofessionalism of Ticketmaster & allow customers to purchase tickets directly through them. Its probably more cost effective as well. On a positive note, the show was wonderful & of course you cant go wrong with events at the Plaza.
