Sonny Bryan's Smokehouse

About the Company

rating: 4.1

Sonny Bryan, whose original vision for top-tier Texas barbecue is still alive and well, used to keep the restaurant open until the 800 pounds of meat ran out (usually around 1 pm). He’d spend the rest of the day riding his bicycle around town. A lot has changed since the days of Sonny and his bicycle but we’re proud of the blend of old and new you’ll encounter while visiting our flagship store. It’s easy to spot imposters in the barbecue industry. Looking for authentic barbecue that stands out among all the other briskets? We’ve got the roots and the history to prove you’re in the right place.

Although the onion rings had a good crust on them, they could desperately use some seasoning in the batter. The Bar BQ was dry and had very strong smoke flavor, and it definitely will give you acid reflux. And the Bar BQ sauce was extremely vinegar and really ruined the taste of the meat. Maybe they were out of Pecan wood when they smoked this batch, I dont know. But I will eat here again just to make sure they didnt just have a bad day. I will be taking my own Bar BQ sauce just in case.

The barbecue is still great and old-school. But please, please, please do something about whoever is using loud-smelling disinfectant, while people are dining. It smells like pungeant, sickening-sweet chemical disinfectant all throughout the place. And the music on the diningroom PA skips and glitches like it is digitally speeding up, intermittently. Both of these things are killing the dining atmosphere. I was going to go back to the counter for dessert but the smell drove me to leave. And its not the first time thats happened. Taste is affected by smell - and barbecues taste is negatively-affected by strong disinfectant smell. Cmon, Sonny Bryans. Do better. I love the food. You are a legend in Dallas!

ROT GUT. DO NOT RECOMMEND This place is absolutely disgusting. My jalapeño cheddar sausage was NOT fresh. Mine was a brownish/green color while my husband s was a colorful pink .You tell me if my sausage was old or not. The potato salad was horrific. I almost spit it out as soon as it got in my mouth. And I am no picky eater (neither is my husband) but the beans were also horrific! I don t understand how this place has 4 stars let alone why they re still in business. None of their food was fresh, the meat needed to be drenched in bbq sauce for it to have any flavor. The only good thing about our dine in experience was the most basic thing on the menu THE ROLLS.

The BBQ itself was not bad but not the greatest. The sauce was a typical sweet sauce. But thats just me not liking sweet sauce. Yet, here is their redeeming quality. The yeast rolls and peach cobbler are Like grandma used to make. Id go there just for those...

Yep, this place has just lost my business and reviews permanently. I ordered a 1/2 half rack of pork ribs with sides. When I got home, I had 2 ribs - yes you read that correctly - 2 ribs. I called the restaurant and asked for the manager. She was unapologetic. Yeah, thats how we portion it out. Excuse me! Your sides are not amazing. I spent $ to come here for some bbq. Quite frankly, your response and unwillingness not to make the situation right, tells me everything I need to know. I will never spend a dollar at your store again - good luck! I will also spread the word.

What has happened to Sonny Bryans? We went last week after not being there in a couple of years. Absolutely no greetings or smiles, indifferent person taking order. Ordered chopped beef and ribs. The meet had no flavor and the ribs dry. Husband ordered ribs, brisket and ham. He didnt eat the ham at all, ribs dry ribs. For $40 it definitely not worth it.

Yesterday evening 7/29 I bought the ribs only - 1/4 pound or half pound - whatever 4 rib bones is on the menu. I asked for LEAN. I got mostly fat. For 13 bucks! Was given a complimentary drink. There were 3 stacks of cup lids - none fit the cup, they were too small and was told those were the only lids they had. SMH. Yeah this place is terrible. Now I know why the parking lot was empty when I got there. This place has gone way down. A to go drink with no lid

Had my first and last visit today, July 29th; morning time. The building itself gave us sketchy vibes but we were here and decided to try anyways. We were greeted by wait, no, we weren t greeted at all. We were MEAN MUGGED by an exceptionally rude cashier who couldn t even muster enough manners to say hello. Maybe she didn t speak English? Regardless, a language barrier is not an excuse to scowl at someone until they decide, you know what? This was a mistake! We left and will neverrrr come back, the vibes felt like a cheap haunted house which was still somehow more pleasant than the front end chick taking out her mood disorder on customers.

BLUF: A decent barbecue joint that s a bit too pricey As an enjoyer of Texas BBQ all my life, I had to go to Sonny Bryan s and see one of Dallas oldest institutions. The service and atmosphere match the place perfectly and it s a great change from the area around it. My wife and I got a pulled pork sandwich, brisket, jalapeño cheese sausage, ribs, and then sides of fries, beans, and potato salad. The pulled pork sandwich is great (especially with some of their bbq sauce and jalapeños or pickles). I d say that the sandwich is the best value and would go back for this. The ribs and jalapeño sausage were also very good. Ribs fall off the bone and have great flavor, and the sausage has that great balance of heat and savory. The brisket was just ok. Nothing crazy about them good or bad. All the meat was good enough to eat, but at $20 a plate, you don t get enough food for what you pay for. The sides were also good. Their fries are done up really well and are a more classic type of diner style which I always love. And the beans are good if you re into beans. I m not a huge fan and ate them up. The onion rings were very disappointing though. All the reviews online say you have to try these onion rings and that they re great. I love onion rings, so had to try them. The batter is pretty flakey and doesn t have much flavor and the onion pieces are massive. I like the balance between the two, but this was only onion flavor. I ve included pictures to show size of onion vs breading. In summary, the BBQ itself is pretty good but very pricey and the sides are acceptable.

Once the clubs close or the night shift ends this is a nice place to come eat at and hang out a while longer till the Sun comes out and drink some more. The homeless are passed out asleep so no worries there. U can drop the tailgate and eat there. I recommend EXTRA CRISPY FRIES they taste a whole lot better. I also ordered the JUMBO RINGS . Which taste bland unless you sprinkle ur own spices which Ive learned to always carry with me in the Trk bcuz they dont have FireHot pepper. Then theyre just Im right. Tell the gal at the front counter taking orders to get her elbow off the counter, her chin off her palm, stand up straight, and greet people as they arrive. When she hands folks drink cups, tell her to assume customers aren t familiar with the soda fountain tucked away in the very back corner of the restaurant and actually point people in the direction of drinks, sauce, etc. Food was good, but I prefer barbecue sauce that isn t served heated.

Was good once upon a time but nowadays the meat does not seem particularly fresh. Also the newish dining room they built kills the gritty vibe. On the other hand this is a great place to sort people youve met, whether as acquaintances or potential long term partners. Do they hunker down in the old schoolhouse chairs, or do they get squeamish and opt for the bland dining room. Use it to vet people, it could save you time and heartache. I remember back in the 90s when I wasnt even as tall as the counter... Would come here and buy a big aluminum tray filled with pulled pork and buns from the grocery to make bbq sandwiches. Driving down the road, 103.7 on the radio. seemed invariably carole king would be playing. Theres something wrong there can be no denying. One of us is changing or maybe youve just stopped trying, sonny bryans.

We tried this spot for the first time after midnight (Friday going into Saturday).. This spot is a hole in the wall that reminded us of Dennys, Waffle House, and I-Hop with it being a 24-hour spot, and a few truck drivers that stopped in... They werent busy at all (maybe 5 other customers when we sat down, guess we beat the club goers that may drop in), the cashier and waiter were nice, and the dining area was clean.. The lighting at the tables were a bit dim, not sure if they do this according to the time of day.. We ordered the large bbq plate that came with 3 meats and 2 sides for $17.99 (unless you opt to have ribs as one of your meats (a dollar more), which we did).. The other meats we tried were sliced beef and jalapeño sausage.. The plates werent loaded with meats ( 2 medium length ribs, a few slices of sliced beef, a small handful of sliced jalapeño sausage)... All meats were pretty good, but the ribs and sliced beef could have been a little more tender... For the sides we chose fries and bbq beans.. The beans came in a small bowl, and the fries were on the plate with the meats.. The fries were ok, but the bbq beans were like pork and beans drenched in bbq sauce (noooo).... They also offer salads as well as the option to purchase their bottled bbq sauce.. We plan to return to this spot...

I love the casual atmosphere. The food is excellent. Placing an order is easy when you just walk up to the register. The employees are helpful. Vegetarian options: All are very good coleslaw, potato salad, beans, Mac cheese, green beans. Parking: Spaces are clearly marked and plenty of spaces to park.

This place is a little gem. The staff was friendly and the food was really good. I ordered the Big plate with brisket, pulled pork, and ribs as my meats. My sides were potato salad and baked beans. Overall a good experience while in the restaurant and eating at home. I would definitely recommend it for a good meal that was priced well.

I used Sonnys as a Thanksgiving cheat....I ordered brisket, sausage, and chicken. Adding coleslaw, potatoe salad, and beans to help fill in the plates. I appreciate the crew getting me set up quickly despite me coming in at 4 pm. on Wednesday. They were obviously working lots of orders and got me out in 10 minutes. The family enjoyed my cheat and whispered Christmas may be at my place too lol.

Food was some of the worst bbq Ive ever had. Brisket was dry and had a weird smoke taste to it, chicken was way over smoked and inedible, sausage was just ok, pork ribs and pulled pork were both 4/10.. was trying to try as many bbq spots while I was in Texas and definitely regret trying this.

My boyfriend, myself and my daughter come in for a late dinner. We order 3 reg rib dinners and 1 1/2lb sliced brisket which was a total of $73.65. The ribs was okay, the potatoes salad was over power with seem like dill and seem like mustard as well. The beans hardly tastes like BBQ sauce was in it and the fries was fresh and hot. The brisket was very, very dry and nasty for $13.99 for 1/2 pound it should be easier to eat and tasteful. We call to let the staff know about the food we were on hold for over 12 minutes and no response.
