The food wasnt flavorful, and the portion was small. They also did not have a few options that were on the menu. In addition to not having menu items, their fryers were off, and they closed the kitchen during business hours. The service was great once I solicited. Atmosphere, they had several dirty tables and made no attempt to clean them. Basically, they were reiterating that they were closing.

This food is horrible! The meatloaf was dry and I could tell it was not fresh and reheated. The greens had absolutely no taste and the macaroni was mushy and bland. All this for $18. I try to support black businesses but we gotta do better. Yall know we know good food and this is not it. Do better people!

The customer service was lacking. I was not greeted when I came in. I ordered my food to go and the young lady who brought me my food was so rude. I asked her if they had ketchup packs. She sharply replied No!. The food wasnt great but I would have came back if I had felt welcomed as a Patron. No shade just sharing my experience.

Group of Trinity Singles went for early dinner. The sweet potatoes & cornbread are the best ever! I will return. The staff was friendly and service was great! It s a More of a Healthier tasting soul food for those who are not accustomed to minimal seasoning. Lots of condiment choices available! Very clean!

The food was horrible as well as the service. The servant had a bad attitude. I had the meatloaf which was bland and dry, potatoes were dry and tasteless and the green beans. Also ordered the tenders with fries and Mac and cheese, tenders were overcooked, fries were soggy. Will never dine there again, very disappointed .

I went to the location in Cedar Hill, not the one that was shown on the pic. Its a hidden gem that you have to look for, or youll miss it! The food was really good and the staff extremely friendly. And I understand on Sundays they cook things that are not on the menu to give you a great Sunday dinner! Go they them out. Plenty of seating for that after Sunday church flow.

I ve only ever visited the Lancaster location and I ve always enjoyed my food. Faves for me are the chicken tetrazzini, spaghetti, the fried chicken wings & catfish & the candy yams be on point 9/10. staff is always friendly. This was awful, not one particle of food was seasoned. The meatloaf tasted and looked like they did not expect anyone to order it. It wasnt a loaf at all. Best chicken wings Ive had in a long time. The owner and staff were great. The sweet tea was perfect. I loved all the sides: cabbage, black eyed peas, green beans and chicken tetrazzini. I felt like a kid again sitting at my grandmas table. Glad we stopped.

Father s Day was my first visit. I ordered the 4 wings w/ 2 sides. The wings were huge, not seasoned and hard to pull apart. I stopped fighting with them. Oh lord the Mac &cheese was white with a sour milk goat cheese taste and the green beans was made with the entire bottle of vinegar! Yes vinegar The young lady who was our waitress did a wonderful job!!! The atmosphere was ok. Also, bring cash if you plan to tip, otherwise the waitress will not receive the tip it will go to the management.

I brought a friend to dine in and she went to use the rest room and came back upset she said she almost floated out of the restroom and the smell of sewage made her not want to eat knowing that the cook was a great cook we ordered Togo she had the fish dinner and I had the one of the Casseroles of the day and wanted dessert NO DESSERTS AT ALL we got our food and left driving 2 hours back home she opened her fish plate and instead of being golden it was dark brown either it was fried too long or fried in old grease she ate it but said she was ok with the darker and crispy but she knows it was too dark. She as well wanted a dessert and said if I had not been hurting she would have went in the kitchen and put some pound cakes in the oven. I know that he is a great Chef and this location apparently has some issues I am still a fan and pray that he gets a better location or clears up the plumbing problem because it keeps you from dining in Pray that he gets a great staff and an extra great Chef like himself and succeeds and think about having Oxtails through the week sometimes

It takes soooo long to get your food. The last time we were there, they ran out of what we initially asked for and didnt bother to tell us until we checked on our food 25min later as we did not get a text as informed when the food was ordered. I can tell there is a different cook and the food was not as good on top of having to wait another 20 min or so for the alternative since what we ordered they ran out of. We wont be going back any time soon. A shame as we love supporting our black businesses.

I needed a peaceful break with good food and thst is what I got today!! When you go, ask for Miss Alice to be your server. She was so attentive, kind and conversational. She got a 25% tip for exceptional service. I had the chicken fried chicken with greens, yams, Mac n cheese and cornbread. I have half to take home now. The chicken was a good size portion with flavor on EVERU single bite. The yams, greens and cornbread were Heaven on your mouth. The mac n cheese was okay only because I did not taste the same level of seasoning in it as I did all the other food. This the only reason my score is just under a perfect 5 for them. I love the ambiance with music playing from 70s and a comfortable volume. I sang, talked and ate very well today. Make sure you ask for Alice when you arrive. We visit for a very sad occasion. We list our Beautiful amazing Auntie Linda Kay Jackson Crosby that live 5min away. We laid Her to rest on September 22at the Potters House. She always told me about this soul food cafe. She was so right the food is delicious. We will come back. Raymond you were a excellent waiter, the Host friendly very nice. I got two salmon croquettes. Do not get anything with cheese noodles. Noodles were cooked too hard and cheese was not melted. Price s too high. Chicken fried too hard and it needs more seasoning. One person tried to order a salad and they were out of lettuce. My daughter wanted yams, and they were out. They were out of onions and cheese as well. I ordered chicken fried chicken, and it was fried on old grease and fried very hard. Only had the option to get kool-aid, water, or tea because the soda machine was not working. Received:Half of scoop of dried out sweet dressing/overcooked chicken, sweet greens (no gravy/cranberry sauce)! *The person responsible for food prep should have more pride paying extra attention to preparation, presentation, texture and taste! 11.5.23 Baked spaghetti was off the chain, seasoned to perfection. The Candied Yams, Mac and Cheese, and Cabbage were delicious. The fried chicken was well sessoned, and the wings were a great size and definitely worth it. Although I had to wait a few minutes for my meal, it was worth it. If you get a to go order make sure they get your name. Cons sides are $4 and are rather small, parking lot is small, be prepared to grab space on the side or down the way. I brought my wife and daughter in because we heard the food was good. Its hard to find soul food here so this was right down our alley. The service need to be worked on. The little girl at the counter was on her cell phone and didnt seem to be aware we were there. The Chef walked out and yelled at our server that we had customers, He seemed livid but turned to us and smiled and asked us to sit anywhere we wanted. The server finally came out and proceeded to sit at the table with us and take the order. I was taken back by that. But although our server was bad, The food was so good! I mean everything, I had smothered Turkey wing, my wife had Chicken n Dressing, and my daughter had Tenders. The food was so good It made me forget about the service. Customer Service weak. Ordered online 10/29/22 Bank charge: only $5.51. I am on a fixed income and cant afford donations to restaurants. Restaurant phoned me back to say no chicken & dressing or mashed potatoes available. She asked did I still want a roll (!?). I replied no to just refund remaining charge. She said refund would be issued. Still waiting a week later. Update: 11/28 a month later! Bank made me call two more times for $5.50 refund. No help. Told to call owner Steve at new Cedar Hill location. Left messages including order confirmation number with AJ and Earl. No answer. Im on a fixed income and even this small amount makes a difference to me. Dont plan on returning to any CS restaurant. Not a good neighbor. Glad they left Lancaster Square. No one needs that. I wasnt pleased. I grew up on soul food-this wasnt it. The corn bread was given cold in foil and crumbled when broken. It was obviously day old. I ordered chicken n dressing. No gravy on the order. Greens-salty, not good. Mac n cheese-instant. Nothing soulful about them. Ok i guess. I called back to ask if they served gravy on it and they said, no. Banana pudding: brown. Not pleased. I enjoyed eating here when the location was in Lancaster. Im really glad they have moved to Cedar Hill, the vibe inside was really nice. I ordered Tenders, Mac/Cheese, Greens, Blackeyed Peas and Meatloaf. My tenders plate was on point as usual all my veggies were good too but that meatloaf was burnt on the bottom and very dry. I will be calling to see if I can get a redo on that plate. Also, they need to update the online menu to the new prices . Its still reasonable and plenty for your buck. I dont mind paying $17 for a meatloaf plate as long as its not dry

DONT LET the pictures of the food you see fool you. Its very bland with no flavor. I wanted to like it but that wasnt possible. They should HIRE A CHEF & SEASON their FOOD. Name for the Saturday brunch buffet and it was a well spent $20. The food was well seasoned, the staff was very pleasant and attentive. The brunch buffet goes from 10 to 2. Disappointing Experience at Casserole Soul Cafe, Cedar Hill, TX I was initially thrilled to discover Casserole Soul Cafe, a local, black-owned restaurant in Cedar Hill, TX, as I m new to the area and was craving quality soul food. Over three weeks, I became a frequent customer, spending almost $300. Unfortunately, my experiences have been increasingly disappointing. During one visit, a side dish was forgotten from my order. When I called to address the issue, the response from the staff was unexpectedly rude, although they did invite me back to rectify the mistake, emphasizing their desire for long-term clients. I appreciated this gesture and continued to patronize the cafe. However, a subsequent visit severely impacted my view of the restaurant. The food provided was notably old, and when I called to express my concerns, the staff promised to replace the meal. Upon returning to claim the replacement and order anew, the situation escalated. The owner accused us of attempting to get more food than entitled, an accusation both unfair and untrue. Moreover, the replacement food was also of poor quality. These experiences, particularly the unwarranted accusations and consistent quality issues, have left me deeply disappointed. I wanted to love this establishment and support a local, black-owned business, but I feel compelled to share my experience to prevent others from similar disappointments. I hope this feedback is received as an opportunity for Casserole Soul Cafe to improve its customer service and food quality, as the community truly needs and desires strong, reputable local businesses.

Customer service not aware of product for such a small establish and not knowing the product you have on menu. After waiting 20-25 for food, then told the item was not available any longer, pissed me off . For a soul food place to be out of cornbread & dressing 2 hours prior to closing that should be a no no . It wasn t good at all and I mean all parts of my visit they are very unorganized, waitress was rude but lightened up over food came out about 30 min later it was cold chicken fried steak was old and dry potatoes were okay green beans were mid they came straight out a can. The meal is 16.99 and they give you one little baby piece the chicken fried chicken is bigger but very salty cabbage isn t good and they forgot to bring out a plate for the other person at our table. Packed a to go drink and it was a straw wrapper inside of it. Service is very slow I will not be returning.

So Good. Steves got a winner and our waitress Marcella was great. I can never remember to take pictures but the food comes out piping hot with great sized portions. Took off one star because it was a little strange to taste sugar in black-eyed peas and macaroni and cheese. Be sure to check out his Sunday specials. I m happy I didn t let some of these reviews stop me from trying this hidden gem. My husband and I were pleasantly surprised how well seasoned and cooked the food was. I had chicken fried chicken and hubby had chicken fried steak. I had greens and yams he had mashed potatoes and green beans we both had cornbread. My favorite hands down were the delicious yams. He loved all of his. My chicken was very well seasoned I almost forgot I didn t cook it. The cornbread is made from scratch not jiffy. The moment I walked in the door the customer service was on point until the minute I left. I will definitely be back!

Sensibly decorated, service was very pleasant and came out in a reasonable time. Prices were good for the portion sizes (I got 2 nicely sized pork chops) and they were the best pork chops I have ever had (nicely grilled, crisped). My friend who knows soul food had the beef tips on rice and said the food was better than most soul food restaurants in the area and reminded her of home. We had the salad, green beans, and tetrazzini casserole sides and can definitely recommend those as well.

This place reminds me of what my grandmother and great aunts cook. When I tell you the food is flavorful and the portions were just right for me! I had the chicken and dumplings, beef tips and rice along with greens (yum!), cornbread and peach cobbler. I no longer have to drive outside of cedar hill for authentic soul food. The staff was SUPER nice and welcoming! Feels like family!

My first time trying this place i had the catfish, chilli beans,Yams and cornbread. Everything was ok that day. So I decided to try them again.. The tetrazzini was like biting into a block of velvetta with noodles in it. Too much cheese! . Hardly no meat. And I found the boiled skin from the chicken inside.. The cornbread was the same, dry and crumbly. I also had a side of baked spaghetti. It was just ok.I spent 18 dollars, and I was hungry so I ate everything but left most of the tetrazzini. Upon entering the door the customer service was amazing. It was my first time so I ordered a number of things and ABSOLUTELY NOTHING DISAPPOINTED ME! This food blessed my soul. Pork chops were fried to perfection, I haven t had salmon croquettes like this since I was a kid. All veggies were in point. Last but not least was this peach cobbler. Ive passed this location for years and finally tried it out today. We have been missing out. The food was delicious. We had the fried catfish, chicken fried chicken, collard greens, cabbage, corn, candy yams, corn bread, and peach cobbler. Total price $38. Everything was delicious, seasoned well, and not too salty. DO NOT EAT HERE! I was a server here ( I quit just a few hours ago). I know what happens in the kitchen when no one is watching. They have ROACHES in the kitchen( I ve swept up several huge ones), there is a FLY INFESTATION and they land on the food all the time, they constantly break FOOD SAFTY LAWS by having boxes of raw meat on the floor, the chefs don t wear gloves, the kitchen is extremely hot so the chefs sweat in the food, the casseroles don t get stored properly so often times they are spoiled. Yesterday (Sunday) I literally served some black eye peas that were SPOILED, The customer could have gotten sick and then when I took it back and made the cooks aware they said yea they probably are and that s all, they didn t even sound concerned! THE DESERTS ARE $6.50 and they are NOT home made at all, they are store bought for $6.00 and they sell them to you all for $6.50 A SLICE. The cornbread is just Jiffy cornbread nothing special, none of the gravy is home made, and some of the vegetables are canned. The owner is a good guy but pick terrible management for his store, it s constant unprofessional behavior such as the manager cursing at staff and have a terrible attitudes that the customers see and overall creates a terrible work environment and dinning environment. TO SUM THINGS UP IVE WORKED THERE ALL SUMMER AND NEVER ATE A CRUMB!! Hands down the nastiest, most unprofessional work environment I ve ever been in and Hopefully enough people see this before the manager deletes it.

Awesome food at an affordable price. While the cornbread was bit dry the Pot roast was devine so was the blackeyed peas. The decor brings the cooking home...love it. Dietary restrictions: Please tone down the salt. Suggestion: you could highlight the benefit of less salt. Some of us can just use the salt shaker if we choose to do so.

Food arrived warm, almost cold. Greens were the only good thing. Mac & cheese is swimming in so much liquid, couldnt even see the noodles - it was bad regardless. Chicken is not fried enough, theres little crunch, but the skin is flimsy. Corn bread is okay but cold. The banana pudding was awful, all of the cookies are past stale, they have the consistency of playdoh, it also tastes spoiled. Very disappointed, it was about $20, I will not be buying food from here again.

On Sunday July 2, 2023 I went in to grab some dinner at what I was told was really good food. Unfortunately on this day day that wasnt the case. Ordered meatloaf plate w/2 sides and upon opening the container at home to discover burned meatloaf. Now while things happen inthat business I understand. But what I dont understand is why you would knowingly package a customer obviously burned food. While the customer service upon entry was great and so was the atmosphere, but to insult your customers by having them return to this place for obvious reasons is even worse than the burned food. Didnt have trouble getting refunded I think because I paid with cash, but can you at least have the decency to apologize and offer maybe a complimentary soda. Probably wont be returning which is unfortunate. Hopefully theyll get that matter fixed. I so wanted to like this place.

I placed my order over the phone was told 15 min. I arrived 20 min later and still had to wait an additional 10 min only to be given the wrong food. The ticket wasn t even mine. I love to support Black owned business and I really wanted to like it but I just dont. 1st time I tried banana pudding and Salmon croquettes and they were too soft and pudding was definitely a box with whip cream. Not the best, mostly whipoed cream. Next i tried tetrazzini, broc n cheese casserole, greens, green beans, and cornbread. Broc n cheese rice was dry, cornbread burnt. Not the same as I remember from the Lancaster location. I was extremely disappointed. I purchased dinner for my husband and I. We got the smothered chicken (Wednesday special) with Mac-cheese and a side of collard. Our second order was the chicken tetrazzini. The smothered chicken was HORRIBLE dry as if it had been cooked for quite some time, the collard greens were extremely salt (couldn t eat them) chicken tetrazzini was spaghetti with a lot of cheese (the worst tasting cheese ever) and no chicken. I walked in and I wasnt greeted. There was a young lady sitting on a stool behind the counter. There wasnt a welcome from her or suggestions from the menu. (It was my first time) I ordered beef tips and mac & cheese and she said that they were out. I then asked her to just tell me what they have and Ill order from that. I really wanted to like this place. Its convenient, the atmosphere was nice, and its soul food. Who doesnt like soul food? Right? Turns out I was very disappointed. I ordered the 4 wings dinner that comes with 2 sides. My sides were dressing and mac n cheese. I asked them for giblet gravy and cranberry sauce. I got home and realized they didnt give me any cranberry sauce. The dressing was dried out and over cooked, so I immediately opened the gravy, and it was so thick that I had to spoon it out of the container. As I spooned it out, I noticed a red powder at the bottom of my cup. I figured it was paprika. It was cayenne pepper! It made absolutely no sense why it was there. Then I tried the mac n cheese. The cheese they used is cheap. It tasted like pimento cheese. You have a choice of a roll or cornbread. I asked for a roll. They gave me cornbread. Now, the main dish (chicken wings) was perfect. It was fried too perfection and was fresh. I even bought cake for dessert. It was good, too. I will not be going back. For $28, and I only enjoyed the chicken and cake.... not worth it. Side note: to be fair, I always call anywhere and allow them to rectify the situation before I review, and this place never answered the phone and have not set up their voice mail.
