I have of course heard of Sam Rayburn though his time in office was well before my time of paying attention to politics. Today, his name is associated with the Rayburn House Office Building, the congressional office building in Washington DC. Rayburn served as the 43rd Speaker of the House of Representatives, the record holder for the longest tenure in that role - 17 years (over three separate stints). He was the Representative from Texas 4th District from 1913 to 1961. The Rayburn House in Bonham is a collection of news articles, memorabilia and several videos that describe the life and times of Speaker Rayburn. His huge library is also accessible. It is self-directed and easy to tour. Expect it to take between 30 and 60 minutes.

I was amazed at how modest the furnishings were for such a powerful political leader. Mr. Rayburn certainly did not use his position to accumulate wealth.

I love this old fashioned house that belong to Sam Rayburn. All of the furniture, and clothing inside are Sams, or replicas of what he and his family would have owned and worn. There is still an active vegetable garden outside in the exact spot where Sams garden was. Go say Hi to Tom the Turkey, and Stinky the mule.

The house is very interesting. He did a lot for his family and constituents. They have a few barnyard animals that are entertaining. The library is the gem though. Go there first.

Visited their first ever night time event, A Very Rayburn Christmas. Lighting for the parking lot entrance is non existent making it a sketchy driveway to find in the dark. The staff and volunteers were very welcoming and informative. They had crafts and treats for visitors. The upstairs floor of the house was closed, which made the experience much shorter.

I did not go there today. I have been there on several occasions and to see the simple elegance in which Mr. Sam lived is revealing. It is also fun to see his Cadillac which was purchased by so many well-wishers. As long as you are seeing where Mr. Sam lived, take a bit more time and see the magnificent Sam Rayburn Library. Its all right here in Bonham, Texas. We welcome you.

The Sam Rayburn House in Bonham,Texas us one of the best of all Historic Museum around. This museum is just like it was in 1961 when Mr. SAM died. Everything in the house is as he left it. Mr. Sams antique car that was given to him by congress when he lost the speakership bought with $25.00 checks that are on display at the Sam Rayburn Library located just down Hwy 56 here in Bonham.
