This is a nice little spot to visit. The food is consistently pretty good. The service is usually great and the atmosphere is nice. The door is tricky for some, but it is part of the experience! The restaurant is tucked into an old historical type of building. I recommend giving this gem a try.

Food was good and the staff were awesome. Never had a drink fall below half full and someone was always checking with us. Very good waitstaff for sure! It s little small inside and the bathrooms are outside of main building but they were clean and had a/c so it was fine. Parking was good as well. Food was slightly on the greasy side but we liked it. Would eat here again for sure.

We arrived a little before closing time. This did not deter the service or food quality in any way and having been here a few times for breakfast as well, I can say I have yet to have anything other than exceptional service and meals. The big hit for me was the underdog menu item...and a comfort food, the buttery noodles. The other items the family tried were all great as well, and the desserts did not disappoint.

This is a cute little restaurant with alot of character. The atmosphere is friendly and inviting. The food was made from scratch and tasted great. The portions were so big we couldnt eat it all and took leftovers home. Waitresses were friendly and attentive. We had chicken tenders with fries. Prices were reasonable. The bathrooms are located outside which were inconvenient but clean. I highly recommend this restaurant for some tasty food for a good price.

Thursday June 27, 2024 several of us, from Everyday Christian Fellowship, were in Belton for a Ladies Retreat. We were free for dinner so we decided to try the Railway Express Diner, because of the variety offered for dinner. We were greeted by a magic door. The instructions to open the magic door were easy and clear. We were warmly greeted with a smile right away. The greeter was our food server too! We asked if she was the cook too? She wasnt. Some had samiches. They were LARGE! Some had burgers. Others had the 1/2 Chicken Fried Steak. There was nothing 1/2 about it. Needless to say portions are Texas size and prices are reasonable. Everyone RAVED about the food and the service. I wish I could remember the food servers name. She was very attentive but NOT overbearing. One of the cooks popped her head out of the kitchen window to offer us dessert. How quaint! The other cook, he looked like Smokey Joe from Fried Green Tomatoes thanked us for joining them and bid us ado. SWEET! SWEET! Experience!

The food and staff were very nice (really friendly). The restaurant was very clean (and very interesting if you enjoy history). What contributed to this a lower score was the 3.7% (this added appx $18 to my bill) they add to your check for using a card to pay (debit/credit). The prices are a bit overpriced for the food. A BLT, kids grilled cheese, and 2 starters (loaded fries and 4 pieces (not full sausages) of boudin and fries to go) was $64. For this amount, I would, at minimum, have hoped my fries were not burnt and the jalapeños I added to the loaded fries were not diced smaller than the chive onions (I apologetically asked the server for my request, and she very nicely pointed out they were the little itty bitty pieces. They are fresh jalapeños, which I love and was excited for, but was disappointed I couldnt enjoy them). Overall, it was not bad, the food is decent, but I cant justify the cost for sandwiches and French fries (plus adding a 3.7% penalty for using modern payment methods). I wont be going back unfortunately, and can recreate the dishes at home to save money being over taxed on food.

I love to support local businesses. I ordered delivery for my boyfriend and I. The food was ok. The best part of the meal was the garlic cheese curds. We both got burgers, they were super salty I almost didnt eat mine. My boyfriend loves salt and said it was salty. I requested mayonnaise and ketchup...instead I got mustard only. The fried egg was over cooked and hard. We got fries as the side, they were ok. Ordered onion rings they were greasy and soggy. I cant blame it on delivery as our driver was here in less than 5 minutes. Maybe it was just a bad night. We live in the downtown area and was looking forward to visiting often. For $70.00 not including delivery fees or tips it is kinda pricy for what we received.

Hubby and I both got the chicken fried chicken dinner, and it was FANTASTIC!! The chicken itself was friend perfectly . Tasty batter, crispy, golden brown. My mashed potatoes were very flavorful (even the bites without gravy). The green beans had small pieces of bacon in them and tasted like Mom used to make. Hubby s okra (double order) was also very good. Texas toast tasted good and has a crunch, but I ran out of room before I could eat it all. Our server was friendly and attentive (just the right amount). We loved our meal and will come back when we are in the area again!! Family owned and operated business .. Love it!

First timer. I ordered the Box Car burger to gauge the food. If they cant make a burger well the rest wont be good. And MAN! that burger was good. Im going to say that was the best burger in this area. Definitely better than anything in Killeen. The Onion Ring on top of the burger was a nice touch. It was breaded and fried so well that I can tell the Chicken Fried Steak will be awesome. Next time! The service was extraordinary. I know I know it was my first time there. The food was alright, over priced in my opinion, the portions were either too big or very small. The people their were very kind however, The food was pretty greasy ( kinda to be expected) but it was just one flavor. The flaming box cart burger was lacking in spices and not sure what was dripping from it overall very soggy with only one flavor. Also another concerning thing was that they had a whole bottle of melted butter already on the table but had to bring out the ketchup not sure why that s a thing.

The food here was delicious and I didnt find any real problems with the cleanliness of the bathrooms or the restaurant itself. I found the prices for the food that you got to be very inadequate I understand were in a bad recession but french fries should not be that much. However the butter noodles were nice they dont have a lot of options though. I did find the chicken on the french fries was well done just the way it should be the steak they create is also well seasoned and delicious. But the portion size to plate Financial ratio is a little off. The waitress wasnt as nice and almost seemed to rush us when we were done even though they were hardly anybody in the restaurant. So cute place, quiet on the weekdays, expensive experience.

My mom had 1/2 an order of the chicken fried steak that was the most tender she had ever had and the fries!! Best fries ever!! Definitely a must see. I was excited to try the Railway Express Diner during a quick visit to town. The interior was smaller than expected, giving it a quaint feel. Our waitress, Mary, was a delight and the best part of our visit. We started with an appetizer, the Katy Combo, which included Boudin Rolls, Garlic Cheese Curds, and Fried Pickles. While the Garlic Cheese Curds were tasty, the pickles were spicier than fried pickles should be, in my opinion, and the Boudin Rolls were too fiery for my taste - though my husband enjoyed them. Our main courses included a Hobo Burger, a Chicken Fried Steak sandwich, a Fried Chicken burger, and a Chicken Fried Steak entrée with sides. The Chicken Fried Steak was fair to middling at best and difficult to cut. My Fried Chicken sandwich was topped with plasticky melted cheese, which was my mistake for not ordering it without the cheese. Still, the chicken had a rubbery texture, suggesting it might have been boiled before frying, definitely not cooked correctly. After taking a bite, my husband agreed with me. In the end, I shared the passable but greasy Chicken Fried Steak sandwich with my mother-in-law. I didnt sample the Hobo Burger but heard it was good. Also, the fries were a complete letdown. They came out greasy and soft, lacking the crispness one would expect. Unfortunately, the dishes are a classic case of looks better than it tastes. Overall The pricing was unexpectedly high for Belton, more in line with what youd see in Austin or DFW. Mary was the standout of our visit; her pleasant disposition was why I added an extra star to my rating. In conclusion, I gave the diner two stars as the elevated prices didn t match the mediocre fare.

When you pull up, the building is confusing because it s called Railroad and it has an ACTUAL train outside connected to the building but that s NOT the restaraunt! The restaraunt is all the way at the other end ! There s TWO other businesses between the actual train and the railroad restaraunt! The middle restaraunt is a Hispanic restaraunt when u so finally find the diner.. IF u find it, the appetizer took a long time to come out, we had to ask for it, but the manager made it right by giving it to us for free so we appreciated that. Our toast was burnt, the waitress staff constantly checked on us though , that was great. The manager is very down to earth and easy to talk to! U can tell they are still trying to figure it out and I think they will! I love what their doing w the train theme and what their doing with that part of downtown. It s nice scenery.

So good! And HUGE portions so I can have left overs! The chicken was perfectly cooked and tender with delicious crunch. I love being able to have TWO different sides with my meal too.

Wow. Just wow. This place is amazing! The food is fantastic and we even spoke to the owner Jay and his passion for his food really shines through on the plate. Our chicken fried steaks were battered and cooked to plate filling perfection and there wasnt a single item that wasnt excellent, onion rings, mashed potatoes, okra, boudin balls, honestly everything has been tuned and tweaked to a perfection that you must experience for yourself. They have only been open 6 weeks so far but this is destined to be one of Beltons hot spots. Not only is the food great but the location is actually Beltons old Railway station and it has been painstakingly restored to its original beauty and is a great piece of local history. Great prices too. I cant speak highly enough of this restaurant it is far above and beyond any reasonable expectation that one could have. Its truly a great place to eat.

1st time eating in this place, food portions to small (even my grandchild didnt get enough) food didnt had that authentic Spanish Puertorican flavor (yes we are from PR) waitress took our order, came back to re-check the order and at the end she forgot to bring my daughter in law order (unacceptable) she end up just eating a small portion of Carne Frita , we still leave a pretty good tip of 20% because the waitress was nice. Wich bring me to the prices, if the portions and the food would have been better the price would have been ok but over $160.00 for 3 adults and one minor was too much. I must said the place was real clean and the staff very nice and friendly.

We had dinner there for the first time and it was excellent! Staff and hostess were extremely friendly and helpful when we asked to switch tables. I had the chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and white gravy with a salad. The portions were large and the salad was fresh. The food was good, but the customer service was excellent!! I was thoroughly pleased and will dine there again.

We arrived and were told the wait was 30 mins. Ok fine so we waited outside because there is no room inside. After waiting 30 Mims in the texas heat the lady said it will be about 20 mins. They had plenty of seating but I guess our short staffed in the kitchen. Bad experience for us. Hopefully it will be better next time.

Absolutely amazing. The diner is like a time capsule of Belton TX from the location and the theme. The food: home style cuisine and the restaurant is ran and owned by a local family. So you know there s an open inviting atmosphere for the kids and family. The service: when I was served my waitress was Abby, the restaurant was actually supposed to close at 7pm at the time of me arriving around 7:15 and they invited me in and gave me and my mother table service that is absolutely rare to come by. Abby never let me get below half way on my drink and before the food came out (approx 10-15 from order) she checked on our table along with 5 others more than once. When the food came out her and the chef came and asked for our personal opinions and thoughts on their food. Summary: if there was more than 5 stars possible I d give them 10/10 definitely a style of restaurant and cooking that is a lost art and staple. Definitely a must try when in the area.

The food was decent but the service was not very good. I am hoping they are trying to work out being newly opened. Our server was MIA for a bit when we got there, the host couldn t find her. She couldn t get multiple items ordered right no matter how many times we repeated ourselves. We were the second group there after opening and we were there for 45 minutes before we got our food, by this point the entire room was packed and they had a waitlist forming. The food came out and my order was wrong, which was one of the things I had to repeat a few times to the server, instead of a fried chicken sandwich it was grilled. Not a huge deal but disappointing because I said fried 3 times and we waited so long I didn t bother to send it back or say anything. Despite how long we waited to get our food, we had the check left at our table in the middle of eating which felt rushed. I would probably try it again but I am not thrilled with the experience.

What an amazing dinner at the Railway Express Diner! This was the second time I ve been and I couldn t be more pleased. Tonight I had the Fuel Man s Favorite and man oh man - what a true favorite it is. Hand breaded ground beef patty that is fried to perfection. Top it off with the brown gravy and you won t be disappointed. Oh and the green beans - just like grandma use to make. This place truly is the heart of southern cooking and Jay & Christi ensure you experience it. The atmosphere is inviting, the building is accessible, the staff is friendly and the meals are affordable. Be prepared to grab a to-go box because they don t cheat you on any of the portions. It s so refreshing to finally have some home cooked meals away from home that aren t some chain restaurant where people are just throwing your food down like an assembly line. You can taste the love in the meal set before you. On top of all this - they have kept the integrity of the old train station which is wonderful to have a piece of history preserved while also welcoming the community into their vision for the future. If I have any complaint at all it is that my Dad isn t well enough to experience it. If he was then you could sure bet that he d be there several days a week. Thank you for investing in Belton s history and serving your passion onto every plate served. Truly one of Belton s gems! A must try again and again!

Went for lunch about 1pm. Took ten minutes to get seated. Iced tea needed more ice. Our food order was forgotten. The people who were seated one minute in front of us had eaten their food and had dessert. They were gone ten minutes before we got our food. The waitress gave my burger to my wife and hers to me. They were both a little too done for my taste. My first time here. No offer to make it right. I wanted so much to like it.

This is hands down some of the best home cooked food! My husband said this is the best chicken fried steak he s ever had. The customer service was amazing. Portions for the price are spot on. Chicken fried steak was so big they could only fit it and 2 pieces of toast on the first plate. We forgot to take a picture before we devoured it.

Wanted to try this place since it s new. It s in an old building. It was a little busy at 11:45 am on Saturday. There s no place to wait for a table but of the weather is nice you can walk around and they will call you. And there is plenty of parking in the lot across the street. We ordered the Katy Combo with regular cheese curds, okra and fried pickles; the Twisted Grilled Chicken, they were nice enough to sub the bacon for grilled onions, with the mashed potatoes and a side salad; the Hamburger Steak with mashed potatoes and okra. They were still in their soft opening but service was fairly quick. The food was delicious and we will definitely be back.

My wife & I chose to come here because we like trying new places, especially non-chain local joints. We really enjoyed our experience here! Hillary took care of us and she was exceptional. We tried the Katy Sampler app (we chose the garlic fried cheese curds, boudin rails and onion rings, served with ranch dressing), all 3 items were hot, crispy and delicious! My wife got the Twisted Hamburger Steak and I got the Twisted Grilled Chicken. Both had great sear, were tender and seasoned well. For sides, she chose a house salad and mashed potatoes w/ brown gravy, while I got green beans and fried okra (which was the best fried okra Ive EVER had)! We hadnt planned on dessert, but when we saw they had a strawberry cheesecake topped with a red velvet cookie ice cream sandwich, how could we resist?! We were the first customers through the door that day, but the place was filling up by the time we left and Hillary was rocking it as the only server! She was efficient, friendly, attentive and seemed to really enjoy what she was doing. Her positivity was contagious! I hope the community embraces them so that this diner has continued success because they made a great impression during our first of what will hopefully be many visits! It was just what one would want from a small town diner: great food at reasonable prices with a casual, cozy atmosphere and staff who take pride in doing a good job and are having fun while doing it!

Went for an early dinner and we were very happy with our experience. This is a brand new diner in Belton. We were seated immediately and our order taken very quickly. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. We had fried pickles for an appetizer and they were really good, and the house made ranch dipping sauce was delicious! I had a Depot Burger and it was delicious and very big, I couldnt finish mine. The fries were very good but could have been a little more crispy (just my preference), the onion ring on top of the burger made me wish I had ordered onion rings. My wife had Twisted Chicken Fried Chicken that she said it was really good. Again, it was plentiful and she had to take half of it home with her. The only hiccup was checkout, they were having trouble with the register and ringing up and charging the meal, but as a new business, it didnt really bother me since they are still working out the kinks. I can see this becoming one of my favorite places to eat in Belton!
