Wow! What happened? It s been years since I ve seen Hoover s. The north location closed. Today I stumbled by the Austin location. I was very excited to see an old favorite but the quality has crashed. The Mac and cheese was not creamy and rather grainy. The catfish portions were tiny fillets. Like all else prices have increased. Overall, I m bummed.

First time visiting this restaurant. Initially was a little skeptical cause the floors are in rough shape . But we wanted to try somthing different. Staff was great though everyone so friendly and attentive. Food for most part was a hit . The only dish that was not really enjoyed was the mac n cheese....maybe off day but seems like it was sitting or reheated. Noodles were mushy and cheese sauce was a little grainy..noone ate more than one bite . That being said the rest if the food was very good. I highly recommend fried chicken salad sandwich. By far best I have had. Perfectly made. All they need is to get floors cleaned and waxed and replace a few ceiling tiles then atmosphere would be 5 stars for me .

I hadn t been to Hoovers for a while. Today, a friend and I had lunch there. Dining area was almost empty, which I didn t understand since it s been usually full especially on a Friday. The welcoming man who sat us explained that they were short handed. If only that was the only problem! My lunch (chicken fried chicken, mashed potatoes, carrots, sweet potato pie, and tea) was largely inedible. I was quite shocked. Food was old, not flavored correctly, and tasteless. My bill was $32. This is not the Hoovers I remember.

April 2024 Hoovers Cooking is all about serving the local community with southern comfort food much of which is locally sourced. I have dined here before a few times in the past and was excited to return. It is located in an area full of new popular eateries, but this place is a landmark. There was plenty of parking and was easy to find. It is all table seating except a few booths. I noticed the staff took their time to seat and serve you. No rushing which made me feel more like being at my parents. It was very calm. I also noticed the Love Rocks TX. slogan all over with a huge collection of painted rocks to spread love which remind when I myself painted a rock during Covid. There was a charm about this place watching an older man painting away. I ordered the 2PC Fried Chicken Dark with 2 House Mates, Macaroni & Cheese and Green Beans, and Sweet Tea. From looking around this place it displays local Austin history all around including items from the Frisco Shop. Once our heavy plates of food arrived the fried chicken looked very good. The food was very hot. I tried a chicken leg and the crust was crunchy and tasty. The chicken was also very delicious. The mac & cheese was great along with the green beans which had chunks of brisket in it. Overall it was really good where it was not spicy at all and perfect for older folks. Really good fried chicken. Planning to return to try the fried catfish or BBQ chicken.

If you are an older Austin resident who may remember places like Nighthawk No1 & No2, or Friscos, or Dots and to an extent Threadgills you know wha6to expect when it come to good downhome cooking. HOOVERS might be your best place to eat a plate full of memories. And for you that are visiting or are newer to Austin, it is a great place to cultivate your culinary culture. This humble restaurant is one of the best kept secrets on the east side and is an easy trip for anyone near UT campus. Friendly service, fresh home style meals, and save room for pie!

This was my first time ever to have experience a Catered Meal let alone a meal from Hoovers and I must say that from reading the comments from 5-6 years ago it seemed that the ratings were good unlike the last comment from about a year ago and now my input. Hoover youre going to have to up your game Brother and become more conscientious of how you earn your money. Because it takes someone who care and if you dont care about your product, it makes us not care. The Jerk Chicken had a lot to be desired. The rest of the things on the Menu were tolerable, but only because of hunger. If the Catered Meal was an Outsourced one then I can understand the dilemma and please accept my apology for it. But, this time its a no, no. In the past Id heard good things about your Business, but now its a different version. Please bring the Hoovers Cooking back so I can give it a 5 Star Rating.

Our group visited Hoovers and found the lunch special to be very nice. However if your going for pie go somewhere else. They serve pie in bowls. The bowls accumulate water, which sits at the bottom making a very soggy bottom. I tipped the bowl on its side and water ran out. Our group travels all over central Texas searching for the best pie. I would place Hoovers close to the bottom for pie. I suggest getting rid of the bowls and use flat plates.

There werent any rolls or cornbread - nothing! This cannot be a southern style restaurant without the food that brings the soul together, cornbread.. or a roll. They did however give me a very small ball of jalapeno bread. in a foil wrap and is just as dry. Horrible.. I wont be back . And is truly the worst 21 bucks ive spent this week.

I googled restaurants and Hoovers was the first one that popped up! My husband got the Fried Pork Chop and it was really good. It was big BUT have seen bigger, felt like it should come with 2 chops since the price is $18.00. I got the Chicken Fried Chicken and it was very good, only thing I would change is that the gravy had a lot of large bits of pepper in it. I was super excited about the sides I got mac & cheese and cream spinach but unfortunately I was really disappointed in both. The creamed spinach did not taste like spinach at all. It had a strong, overpowering taste that I couldn t quite identify what it was. The mac & cheese, the cheese was really dry and had milk clumps of cheese in it. The napkins were clean but they both had a strong old grease smell to them. The restaurant looked really run down and the bathrooms needed some attention. It had that old grease and unclean smell. When we re back in the area, I think this will be your last choice but The Chicken fried Chicken was really good!!

The queso was good. However, the chicken fried steak was NOT as i hoped it would be. Tasteless and dry!. The Mac n cheese was probably the worst Ive ever had because it didnt taste like Mac n cheese but cheddar powder noodles. At $17.99 a plate.....this was crazy. I havent been here in a couple years.. so I decided to come by and give it a try.. First off the restaurant had a weird smell as if they were mopping with a dirty mop or water. It was so bad my girlfriend said she could taste it. Also the floor was still sticky as we walked. I ordered the chicken fried chicken, When I received my food the portions were very small. I asked the server what happened the chicken used to be bigger. He said before they used to smash it before and now its thicker (it wasnt thick at all). The mash potatoes were similar to a box kind and they were cold. The food had no flavor or seasoning. I also noticed they only had two sides and asked what happened they used to have three sides before. The guy at the register said it changed 3 months ago and that the cost of food has gone up. After paying 50$ for two meals we were still hungry. One review on here mentioned how Lubys would be better and I think Id have to agree. Its really sad to see the quality and potion size go down. After this experience I will never come back.

This place is disgusting in my opinion. They are serving food that is old and fried in old grease. The flavors of their food is old oil and no seasoning. My boyfriend took one bite of the Austin Tex wings and he was grossed out. As soon as we walked out the restaurant he was gagging. When we got home he was throwing up. I ate a few bites of my fried chicken and mashed potatoes but there was no flavor. I barely ate off my plate. They did take the wings off of our ticket. But the fact that my boyfriend got food poisoning is disgusting. I will never eat here again.

Hoovers does a lot of classic southern style comfort food. If that is what you crave then this place is worth a visit. Unfortunately for me it didnt seem all that special. Food wise it was as if you took what used to be good 15 years ago and froze that idea. There is just too much competition with better tasting food these days.

Ordered over $100 worth of food for Fathers Day to gift a friend a special meal. The one highlight is that since I had cash only they kindly allowed me to place an order over the phone and I was able to pay when I arrived. Based on the reviews I ordered the chicken, macncheese, yams, collard greens and even doubled up on the desserts ( peach cobbler, sweet potato pie). Unfortunately all the food was exceptionally bland. The peach cobbler ( was more of a pie than a cobbler)and the sweet potato pie were awful. This ruined my gift as well as left us hungry since the food wasnt even tolerable. Very disappointed, and if you do a search for soul food and get Hoovers as a result, like I did keep searching because this isnt that.

I can remember when Hoovers 1st opened you had to wait to get in and get service. Food, drinks and the dessert was unbelievable tasty! Good old days! We wanted a good chicken fried steak so we headed to Hoovers, there was no wait, we walked right in. I m sad to even leave this review, the food was horrible. Our chicken fried steak was nothing but breading, no taste. The jalapeño cream spinach, which was one of my favorites back in the day it was awful. The place looked really run down and it was really warm in the restaurant. Really disappointed.

I was so excited to try this place. I ordered typical southern comfort food, Chicken-Fried Chicken Breast, macaroni and cheese, Mustard Greens and mashed potatoes and gravy. The macaroni and cheese was so over cooked, I didnt need to chew. The Greens had a weird sweet taste and chicken breast was not seasoned. Nothing was. The mashed potatoes and gravy were ok enough to eat. Everything else I trashed. I was also given two of stalest cornbread muffins, that gave church pantry vibes. $40+ for a scoop of mashed potatoes and gravy I dont see myself ordering here again.

The food is basic and bland. I do not recommend the gumbo or the quesadilla. See picture below. They should just call it Dilla because wheres the Quesa? Its a step up from Lubys, but thats not saying much.

For this place posting all their accolades in the front for every one to see. I wasnt impressed with the food,it was just ok. I had the chicken fried steak. With fries and fried okra. The side of okra came in a little tiny bowl of what look like a small queso bowl. It literally had 13 pieces of okra in it. I mean if your gonna charge 20 dollars for a plate at least give the customer some good portions. If this place used to be glorious I think it has fallen off a bit. Im not gonna say its a total bust but its not the greatest either. Going back across Town Lake to the southside.

I used to come all the time over a span of 18 yrs but the food gets worse every visit. I decided to try it again after a year or so. I wanted the chicken fried chicken with etouffee sauce on the side. I was told it would be an extra charge which was fine. The guy ringing me up said he could put it as the chicken etouffee. I wanted to make sure it was the chicken fried chicken and not regular fried chicken. He said he been there for a while and knew how to ring it up. I came back to exchange my food because the sauce was on top of the chicken sitting on a bed of rice. I dont care for soggy chicken which is why I told him on the side. While waiting there a young waitress was irritated and getting an attitude over her customers. Hoovers started out great but service and food has declined and most of the time its not even seasoned and lacks flavor. I really had high hopes for this place cause Austin needs more soul food places. I can save my money and cook better food at home without the frustration.

The dinner wasnt as good as the brunch I had since years ago. I was disappointed. I got the catfish strips not filets. They were very bland. The Cajun rice was also bland. The mashed potatoes were chewy because of so much potato skin left on. The chicken fried chicken, was bland. The green beans were very stringy. I gave my meal away and bought something else. I was very disappointed.
