Stunning aesthetics, solid 10/10, really wanted the rest of the experience to match but it was just bad. They took exceptionally long to bring the wrong appetizer, then an incredibly dry chicken enchilada (which they were kind enough to exchange for a fantastic ahi tuna tostada). Ordered the same drink twice yet it was a different color and flavor profile each time. The place has potential but at that price point there s a reason they re half empty on a Saturday night.

Amazing service. Editing to add we went for Austin Restaurants Week and whoever is in charge of the menu upped the price by $20 from what was advertised with Austin Restaurants Week (from the original $40 to $60) and as a result it now costs more for the food to do the promo then it would to order off the regular menu ($53 if you did regular menu for the exact same items). Thankfully our waiter was great and honored the promo advertised online. However there is no telling how many people were duped into paying the premium for the promo. Just as an FYI, Perry s charges $60 for Austin Restaurants Week and that s Perry s lol. You get an 8 oz filet. at La popular you pick tacos or enchiladas

I live across the street and have dined in once, ordered to-go 3x. Overall the restaurant is a nice place to be, nice decorations and layout. Music is pumping like you are at a club. Food is decent, but overpriced. I showed up right on time to pick up enchiladas last weekend and they were cold by the time I got home- which is less than a 5 min drive. Barely any meat inside the enchiladas, way overpriced. Today I ordered chicken tacos and they reminded me of old cafeteria at work. Sauces are great! Just overall price for quality is lacking. Would be a good spot for cocktails and an app, but not $30 dinner plates that leave you wanting more.

Omg let s start off by saying this is a cute restaurant very nice looking on the inside. So took my girlfriend here this weekend to celebrate her birthday with the family and friends. The welcoming wasn t so welcoming. It was giving very much races because it was too many colored folks. That was my group. I didn t really see or feel welcomed the waiter. He basically he was nice, but he had a very smart mouth, but he redeemed himself Aaron at the end of our dining so it was fine. The food I would not give it five stars quantity versus the value is not giving taste when I go back probably not manager followed us out to the parking lot afterwards wasn t very welcoming. It was giving very much racist

Overpriced, underportioned protein on the tacos. The ribeye tacos were good but total of 1oz meat per taco...completely ridiculous. Chips were dripping in grease. And no more of the complimentary 4 diff salsas served with chips. I used to love laPopular but now I wonder what has changed?? I had gastro issues for 2 days after this lasted there. All the prices have risen and the portions shrunk. Margaritas prices way too high also. It was empty for a Saturday lunch and these issue might be why. I do not claim to know. Our servers were great!

I was looking forward to a satisfying meal but unfortunately, my medium steak salad arrived well done. While the staff was kind enough to replace it , the second attempt was nearly identical. Also the restaurant no longer offers chips and salsa, a previous staple.Perhaps with more attention to detail, this restaurant could improve its 3.9 star rating!!!

This place is an absolute disgrace. Overpriced and flavorless. $19 for ribeye tacos, there was less than 1 ounce of thinly sliced steak on the plate with no flavor. Margaritas just take like lime juice. The rice and beans were extremely bland. Just overall this place is awful, never go.

I enjoyed lunch with a friend here last weekend, we ordered the cerviche and guacamole for appetizers. The cerviche was very fresh they used a white fish. For entrees I had the chicken mole, sauce was rich and meat was seasoned well. My friend tried the chicken Chile relleno, which had a pretty tangy sauce. Also, the relleno was on the spicy side. The drink menu is pretty interesting. Drinks are strong but very well made. For dessert, we had the flan, which was served with ice cream, which I didnt really enjoy as I am used flan being served warm. Overall service was good and so was the food

Wow! We saw this on a best new restaurants to try list and it certainly didn t disappoint! The plants and overall interior design are very trendy and attractive. Everything was flavorful with a lovely presentation. We got the Ahi Tostadas as an appetizer and they were delicious. I got the Quesabirria Tacos they were absolutely incredible, so flavorful and filling! The Esquites were very good as well. The beans and rice side did come out room temp/a bit cold, but they still tasted good. The cocktails came in very cute glasses and were delicious! Overall, a great place for an amazing meal and cute pics for the social.

Atmosphere is delightful. Food beyond mid. Service okay for a Monday evening. Avocados felt like rubber and the ceviche also tasted like plastic. Maybe we came on a bad day but the cutlery was beautiful and the cactus mugs were very cute. However, $80 plus tax without having a full entree is kind of absurd.

Outstanding Dining Experience at La Popular I have to give a huge shout-out to La Popular for making our last-minute lunch with a party of 9 absolutely fantastic! From the moment we arrived, they were incredibly accommodating and went above and beyond to ensure we had a memorable meal. Marty, the manager, deserves special recognition for his exceptional customer service. When he overheard my autistic brother expressing discomfort with the queso, he took immediate action. Despite there being nothing wrong with the queso (it was actually delicious), Marty personally arranged for a custom-made queso with a different texture that suited my brothers preferences, and he did it at no extra cost. His genuine concern for my brothers comfort truly touched our hearts. Our server, Chey, was also outstanding. She provided us with excellent recommendations and her service was top-notch throughout our meal. Her friendly demeanor and attentiveness added immensely to our dining experience. Thank you, La Popular, for not only serving delicious food but also for your exceptional hospitality and understanding. You made our lunch so enjoyable, and we cant wait to dine with you again! I would not recommend this place due to the expensive prices and the little food you get. I got the watermelon hibiscus margarita which was good. Of course it tastes mostly like juice, but it was pretty good. We got the pastor tacos and the ribeye tacos. It came with a very small portion of rice and beans. Half of the taco options are more expensive and only come with 2 tacos. Some dishes (like the fajitas) also don t even come with rice and beans. Overall between 4 people who got tacos, enchiladas, fajitas, and the Cesar salad we were all pretty disappointed.

I just left and the portion sizes are so small its actually crazy. Under NO circumstances should you get the Ribeye tacos unless you want LITERALLY one sliver of meat on the taco. Very overpriced and not even flavourful for the price not even talking about just the Ribeye tacos (all of them are scarce at best). NO complementary chips and salsa for us (maybe it was just us) and if it was just us my review for service should be lower.

It is clear that it is a restaurant not for Latinos. We ordered two drinks that we did not like at all. I was celebrating my birthday with my partner. We ordered food and drinks and the place had only 3 tables occupied when we arrived, as a joke, the restaurant began to fill up. , they served my partner and I waited 40 minutes for some meat tacos that looked like an x-ray of meat and one of avocado. I didnt know whether to cry or laugh. I asked the waiter to take the plate away, and I didnt even touch it...they were tacos. Simply put, I am Mexican and this place is anything but for Mexicans or Latinos, the Anglo-Saxon community with all due respect, but you have to know that this is not Mexican food, no matter how Gourmet they want to make it... the worst birthday meal, in fact, the only thing that He saved the payment of the ticket, it was a bitch and the tuna toast, apart from that, everything was a disaster ..

Overpriced food that was mediocre tasting at best. Small portions to boot. Terrible service. At one point our waiter argued with a member of our group because he insisted that he had served her a second glass of wine that she had ordered. Clearly he had not. I was sitting right next to her. We spent hundreds of dollars there and he causes a stink about a glass of wine?!? It was a special occasion so we asked the waiter to take a group photo which he reluctantly did. It turned out to be a terrible photo so I looked around and finally found another employee to retake the photo. It was the hostess and she flat out refused to oblige us! She just walked away.

The nachos starter was wonderful - right balance of spices. But the stars of the show were the tacos - especially Quesabirria - it was hands down one of the best tacos we ever had. The Carnitas and Campechano were also wonderful. The flavor of the meat was outstanding and stood on its own - did not need a lot of condiments to add flavor. We will definitely be back.

It s been bothering me for a few days and I felt maybe reading a few reviews could help them learn and grow from their missteps. Being in the service industry and new to the area this place didn t leave a good taste in my mouth. The night before I stopped in in hopes of grabbing a drink because I saw that they were open. I walked in to a man that I assume was the manager, who did not greet me. I asked if they were still open and what time they closed. He said midnight, it was 11pm at the time. He wasn t inviting, very off putting and insulting to me as a guest - not to mention someone who s in the industry. My plan was to grab a marg (or two or three, maybe they re good enough to have multiple) and a taco and head home for the night. I felt he looked at me, made a judgement and decided I wasn t worth the $100 I was planning to spend so he could leave for the night. I don t know I m just speculating on how this person who s either a host or a manager could allow such a thing. My friend decided we should go back the next day. Service was very slow; they re obviously understaffed. The manager was running food, host was clearing tables and either a cook or expo was also running food. I get it, I ve been there. Food was great but unfortunately what draws people back to the restaurant is its full package which yields its value and with the slow service, awful first experience and price point, it didn t meet the measure. I will give them another chance and maybe sit at the bar because the concept has potential and the ambiance is nice. But also I know what it s like to have a bad night in addition to being understaffed but you never know who you re dealing with and everyone deserves to be treated well.

I have been to La Popular 5-6 times now. Absolutely love the salsa offering and I feel like it gets better each time. When I have made a reservation I never had an issue. I usually just walk in and grab a seat at the bar, but keep in mind, people in the SW area have been waiting for places like this to open. So it will get crowded, there is a large hotel in the same shopping center so La Popular can be popping at any random moment depending on whats going on. If its a Friday/Saturday prepare to wait. Happy hour? Yeah its gonna be a bit busy. The sense of entitlement is high, and not to brigade against customers, when the price is high you may get some entitled personalities, it comes with the dollars. With that being said, grow some patience and understanding (customers), hate to see a legitimate great restaurant get railed for wait times or reservations. Back to the good stuff. Great tequila selection and really good tacos. I have the food a 4 because Ive had some hit and miss items, if a taco is going to cost 16 dollars it better be a top 3 taco and unfortunately, its not. Not saying the taco is bad, but were talking about value here. A 16 dollar good ribeye taco doesnt beat a 4 dollar great azada taco. I would love to see more value from La Popular, an elevated mini taco plate or something would really fill that void. The staff and bar are fantastic. I usually get my tequila on the rock or neat depending on how I feel that day, but their mixed drinks are super damn good. The Perlas has become my go to before I switch to straight and its always good and strong. Mistakes happen yall, dont treat staff like they are beneath you and it goes way smoother for everyone. I havent experienced any communication issues but hopefully they have worked those out. Enjoy yall! Update: Had to change the food score. Ceviche and Salsa are fantastic. Everything else needs flavor.

If you are coming here for excellent food and a full stomach this is not the place. This place is strictly nice for cute cocktails and vibes. I wouldn t personally return back unless I wasn t hungry. Honestly speaking there are a lot of cute bars in Austin I would check some of the other ones out.

Hip-ish restaurant serving tex-mex like food choices, also close to AMD site. Grabbed lunch here while traveling for work. Just watch out for their green sauce that can pass for avocado... its pretty darn spicy!

Very disappointed. As a local, I was so excited when this opened. Brought friends, recommended it to my clients, etc I hadn t been for a couple months because of life, holidays, etc. Finally went for Friday HH. It was dead, service at the bar was inattentive and not as I remembered. Was not offered chips and salsa (it appeared no one was) as before. The guacamole in the past had sautéed onions on the top which I loved now some salsa. Not like it was and will not recommend.

if i could leave 0 stars i would. We ve been here 5 times before and the food is honestly really good - especially the ahi tuna tostadas. However, tonight we encountered the most disgusting service we have ever had before. The manager and both of the host were so terribly rude and disrespectful. Before, we would rave about this place to friends and family - now this place is crossed off of our lists forever lol and we will forever talk negatively about this restaurant. I wish i got there to warn all of you. lol don t go here.

La popular is one of the best mexican food restaurant in Austin. The ambience is so beautiful and the interior designs are very attractive with comfortable seating. We ordered Chicken Tacos and Fish Tacos with Nachos.. The dishes looks colorful and nicely decorated. The taste is okay but, I expected a lot, and needs little bit improvement in taste wise. They staff are always helpful and ready to guide us to select the menu based on our recommendations. Definitely a perfect place for friends to chillout. Overall, We had a lovely dinner experience. I had to go with 4 stars based on the excellent service, welcoming atmosphere and manager making the rounds in front of the house. Food: the salsa with fresh made chips were very good. The ahi tuna tostadas were tasty but a little too salty. The Quesabirria had delicious brisket, the cilantro was missing and the consommé large bowl was a little confusing to me. Also salty sadly. Note that the expected sides are all add-ons that with the price should be included. The fajitas did not come with usual sides. Disappointed: the tres leches we looked so forward to was like a grainy cake from the freezer camouflaged with a merengue on top with a misters sprinkle again salt sprinkle was unnecessary.

Service was lacking and food was mid at best. It was not busy at all when we sat for dinner (very few tables and servers doing side work). Maybe it was because we were a larger table (we had 10) or because they are newer, but the service and timing was just off. To start, no one took our drink orders. We were only able to order drinks once our server came over to take our food order, we had been sitting for a while at that point, and that was the first time he d checked on us. And then we were barely checked on the rest of the night. I would have ordered another drink but we were never asked again. Our food came out one by one over the course of 15 minutes and was sub par for the price. Very salty. Definitely do not recommend the ribeye tacos, order the ribeye fajitas instead if you have to. Another note: As the food was dropped off my husband picked up his soup appetizer plate to give the food runner space to put down the dinner plate. The food runner dropped his food and then ran off, leaving my husband still holding his dirty soup plate with no where to put it down, as there was no more room on our table. He just sat there holding for several minutes before our server noticed and ran over to take it to the kitchen.

First time visit, looking for authentic Mexican food. Atmosphere is an odd cross between LA Night Club and Sports Bar. Food was a mixed bag. Carnitas were very fatty, to the point we sent an order back. Everything else we ordered was good and came promptly. Server was very attentive and comped our returned taco order, which we greatly appreciated. Might go back for Happy Hour Margaritas, but probably not for dinner

Food was served cold and extremely greasy. Not authentic at ALL. Mediocre Tex mex at best. Only got served one salsa for some reason instead of the sampler. Beans were so overly seasoned (straight cumin) we could not even eat them. Every one s meals were terrible. Will not be going back. Unfortunately, add this to your list of new overly hyped restaurants in Austin that continue to disappoint.

This spot was really great looking. Amazing decor and vibes, great music. I came here originally because I live in downtown and wanted to get away from the city vibes, but its exactly that. Now to be fair, the food options were great, but there was no flavor. Now that I look at the reviews, I was seeing that the chips come with 4 salsas, we only got 1. Again, no flavor on the salsa. The drinks options were good got both Aguas frescas, extremely watered down. With the little bit of flavor i tasted, it was good. Got ahi tuna tostada, and it was very disappointing. I finished it in 4 bites. It comes with 2 but I shared. Then got ribeye tacos dish with vegetables, and it literally came with 6 slices. Not even big, I mean enough for 3 tacos. IT DIDNT EVEN COME WITH RICE AND BEANS!! For $35?? I might as well should have stayed in downtown Austin and payed more for less food, but at least they have great flavors. Overall, I cant knock it because its really great presentation, the place looks amazing with the design and environment. But I could never come back to eat. I feel like I got extremely ripped off for a taste of food with no flavor.

Took the hubby here for his birthday and it was exactly what we were looking for. The vibe was chill, the food was great, the drinks were better. The only thing that fell a tiny bit short for me on service was that they brought the complimentary chips and salsas and we dug in without realizing we didn t have water. We had to stop and wait (what felt like) a pretty long time for the waiter to bring water and offer other refreshments. That being said, they made up for it during service and even brought him a little ice cream bday treat at the end. Overall, the experience was fantastic and we plan to return. The atmosphere is incredible, beautiful bar, and sexy lighting. The drinks are top notch and the service very friendly. The food does not fit the atmosphere what so ever. It s as if Serrano s Tex mex was served in an upscale building but the food isn t as good the mole sauce was burnt and the corn was way over cooked and just turned to mush in your mouth. The space calls for an elevated food experience and it falls very short of that. The tables are extremely small for the size of the plates served, and what s up with the water glasses? they re so tiny! Also there is a weird film on the floor where you almost slip just walking to the bathroom. When I was leaning on the bar while seated, my chair would slowly slide away from the bar because of the slick floor. Would only recommend going here for the margaritas.

Just okay. Service was good but slow. Food was just okay. The first two items I ordered were out. Finally settled on a third choice. Next time give people a heads up to which items aren t available. Rice was good. Drinks were okay. Way too cold in the restaurant. I watched several people asked to be moved outside. Also watched multiple people looking to see where the cold air was coming from. The disco ball needs to go. Hated watching red and blue light hitting our table while trying to eat. There s just too much going on in the restaurant. Good vibe but could be better if they toned it down a bit. The music is way too loud. I won t likely return. Way better places to eat in Austin and especially on the east side.

Most of the Food was okay. Would say the (expensive) tacos were way too greasy compared to street cart ones. Music on patio was crashingly loud. Real downer was how our waiter S repeatedly interrupted our conversations. He felt entitled to interject his views, and stood around despite really obvious body language from us. I had to keep saying okay then a bunch to get him to leave us. Please focus on being a great SERVER instead of an unwelcome participant.

We went to have an upscale mexican dinner on a Friday evening. The place was pretty packed as we had foreseen. We sat at the bar for maybe 10 min while out table was getting ready. I feel our experience was not a total fail. Our evening started at the bar while we waited and ordered drinks. We ordered the margarita for five Its hard to wrong with margaritas..... Flavor was good but it was definitely NOT for five. We barely got 4 drinks out of the decanter they served it in. The food was OK, We had ceviche and the pastor enchiladas. Presentation a 10! Flavor maybe a 6. We returned the ceviche and ordered chicken tacos to replace it. They were ok. They were chicken tacos. They were good but nothing special. The pastor enchiladas were ok. Flavor was a bit different, but ok was the best I can say. We also had a side order of beans and rice.($6 a piece mind you). They should give up on making beans and stick to the rice. The rice was good. As for the service, it was top notch. Our server was knowledgeable and just plain sweet. No hesitation returning our unwanted ceviche and we received a complimentary drink. She was attentive and not over our shoulder as we ate. Not sure if we would return to just eat on our own, but we would not turn down an invite from friends to spend some time having cocktails and good conversation. Pluses were the chips and salsa flight, the ambiance, and excellent service. Negative was definitely lackluster food.

This restaurant screams Dallas paradise. Conveniently located in a shiny strip mall, La Popular greeted me with blasting techno music, a disco ball, and The Simpsons playing on every television with no closed captioning enabled. The pastor was the color of Dobby the House Elf (let that baby cook a little plz) and the secret ingredient for at least a couple of the dishes was soy sauce. Hmmm. Guac is usually one of the things that you always wish you had a little more of but here it came in a molcajete that was the size of a 15 lb bowling ball cut in half. We didn t finish it. I like the Simpson s, Mexican food, disco balls, and soy sauce but maybe I m not in a place in my life where I can appreciate them all in one super XXXL guac bowl.

La Popular is a very lively authentic Mexican restaurant. Three of us went there for dinner. We had made reservations; I don t know how long it would have taken to be seated ! The service was a little slow but very friendly. The (free) chips are served several different salsas- from very hot to less spicy. We had different Tacos- creamy prawn, Baha - tempura prawns, and Carnitas. All were were very delicious. The noice level was quite high - with everyone talking quite loudly. But overall good place worth checking out.
