Very knowledgeable & personable staff. Super attentive, without being overbearing. They kept bringing water and refilling our glasses without us even noticing, I ordered the Croque Madame. It comes with salad and was delicious! Better than the one I had in Paris! The restaurant area is very small, but spacious enough. There s a cute grocery store with food items and gifts on the other side of the bar, without a dividing wall. After lunch, we enjoyed browsing through the grocery store and the book store one shop over. Would recommend!

This review does not concern the food or atmosphere. We had to cancel a reservation, in what I consider well in time (several hours before the time) but on the same day. They charges us a $120 cancellation fee. I think that is outrageous! We will not consider them in the future. Service

I wanted to share some feedback regarding my recent visit. While I understand that substitutions are sometimes not possible, I was disappointed with the handling of my request. I ordered a charcuterie board and asked if the liver chicken pâté could be substituted with cheese. This request was declined, which I can understand, but when I asked to order some cheese separately, the waiter didn t inquire about my preference and brought me Parmesan, charging me eight dollars for it. Given the nature of your establishment, I expected a more accommodating and attentive service. I hope this feedback helps improve the experience for future guests.

Great space, horrible service. Tried to order dinner and got told off twice, ordered a drink and awkwardly waited for a table in an empty restaurant. Paid in cash and the bald guy never gave me my change, then he lost me i was standing there and must have made eye contact with him 3-5 times before he brought me my drink then told me to go outside. Second person said water was for guests, maybe try offering a seat and a menu instead. Whole experience turned me off to the place.

Great architecture, good vibes, nice music playlist. But the food for the price just wasnt it. We went for brunch. The french omlette was fine. The avocado toast was fine. The star of the things we ordered was the crepe, but I think the menu said crepes and it was just one. I ordered the house latte, and my mug came covered in spills and splatters. My dining companion had to get up and request oatmilk though he requested it at our table 2x. I highly recommend this place for a some glasses of wine and a snack but not a meal. .

Cute little bistro vibe that takes up about half the building space of this Tiny Grocer in Hyde Park. I got the burger, my friend got the egg white omelet. They were great about substitutions. Food came out fresh and hot with high-quality ingredients. My only struggle here was a beverage of choice - the teas were all bagged, and none of the juices were fresh squeezed or organic. They gave me the option to grab something from the grocery portion of the store, which was greatly appreciated. Service was quick and kind. Loved the bright airy-ness!

If you are a muscel fan, steer clear of that dish. :( Mostly, everything was great about this cute place , BUT.... Worst muscles I have ever had. They seriously poured like half of a shaker in the first batch. I was respectful but sent back.....what did I get next? Muscles with NO salt and they didnt bother to cook the alcohol off the wine. Feeling that was a spite dish. And they still charged us. The Steak, was the best we have ever had. And the desserts are fabulous!! Adorable place!

Great neighborhood bistro tucked inside a high end convenience store, deli, and coffee shop. My son adored his Burger Royal. My daughter loved the salmon fillet from the deli. I loved the service. This is hands down some of the best services in town. Did not matter what part of the store: each area is staffed by people who know what they are talking about and doing AND are thoughtful and kind while doing it. This could easily be pretentious and unwelcoming- this team has done a tremendous job to just make this place feel natural and welcoming AND high end. We will be back. Vegetarian options: Vegan, vegetarian, low carb, paleo, and pescatarians are all welcomed and have their needs addressed here. Dietary restrictions: I am keto and went with two kids. They were phenomal for all three of us picky eaters. Some chance for cross contamination. Parking: A wonderful parking lot shared with a beautiful little local book store. Kid-friendliness: Very kid friendly. There is something for everyone here. Wheelchair accessibility: Very accessible.

I ve been here a few times with mixed service so I booked it for Brunch for my 30th birthday for my husband and I. The service was so so bad. To start, we waited for about 5 minutes for someone to meet us at the hostess stand. Our waitress was running around, busting tables, grabbing things for us while the woman who was supposed to be bussing tables stood in the shade. I needed more bread for my cheeseboard and it took 15 minutes, which felt like it slowed everything else down for our food. My husband ordered the burger and fries which were great but no ketchup which also caused a delay. It was so hot out and almost no airflow so maybe book for indoors. I hate to write a bad review but I can t justify going back to give it another shot.

We had a family dinner on Friday evening for an early Mothers Day celebration. It was our first time here, 5 of us. Service by our waiter (red beard with a hat, dont remember his name) was excellent. We had several appetizers including escargot, endive, salad, bread, and charcuterie. All very good. I had 2 frozés, frozen rosé wine with a little lemonade. My family enjoyed the different wines. I had the cod entree while others had steak, rattatoui, or salad. All well prepared. I had the chocolate mousse for dessert. I was stuffed! Highly recommended! Vegetarian options: Im not a vegetarian. Parking: We sat on the patio of the converted post office that had the restaurant & bar, grocery store, book store, and Pilates studio in the back. We found parking easily at 6 PM but later arrivals might have difficulty. Wheelchair accessibility: There is a ground floor entrance to the patio.

Our server claimed to be the manager, so I m not sure if we actually got to speak to someone higher up. We had two drinks, escargot, a burger, fries, and mussels. In short, the food was improperly cleaned, under-seasoned, lukewarm, and cooked in spoiled oil. The manager gave a poor excuse and claimed they have new people in the kitchen and have been going through growing pains.

Food was delicious and authentically French. The service was not. We arrived at 8:45, when the kitchen closed at 10:00, and were constantly rushed throughout the meal. Our server was very pushy, as if she was ready to leave as soon as we sat down, and did not make us feel welcome. It was my wife s birthday and we were hoping to enjoy a nice meal, but ultimately felt like we were supposed to order, eat, and leave as quickly as possible. I hope this is a unique experience specific to this server, as the food was lovely and we d like to eat here again, provided we re not expected to be in and out in under an hour.

I should start this with my pallet is not very refined. The salad was the best part. The endive was crisp and the dressing was bright with citrus acid. My wife liked her mussels but said there wasnt enough sauce. I had the vegan mushroom burger which I didnt like because of the textures between the tempura and a not so fresh bun. The desert was rich and I ate my first flower lol. The ambiance is great, native plants and open space on the patio.

Despite making a reservation for indoor seating due to allergies, we arrived to a wait and were then unexpectedly placed at an outdoor table. The hostess was cold. After clarifying our reservation, we were finally seated indoors, but next to a noisy silverware station with gnats flying around even though there were other indoor tables of the same size and bar seating available. The restaurant has accolades, but the food fell short. The wine was okay, dishes like the escargot and cassoulet were lackluster compared to Justines or Hopsfield. The cheese plate, though tasty, lacked sufficient bread for the soft cheeses,. To top it off, our server disappeared during the meals end, leaving us waiting with no explanation. Another server eventually cleared the table and took our payment. The entire experience was messy and disjointed, failing to live up to the restaurants supposed reputation.

We placed a 1:45pm reservation for brunch. We came early 1:30pm. Brunch ends at 2pm. We asked to make sure coming in at 1:30. Is it ok to still order? They said yes as long as were seated by 2pm we can still order brunch. The whole time we were so rushed. When we ordered desert. They said we couldnt. Staff needs a little more training. Do not allow reservations after 1pm for brunch if you cant provide brunch. Or state when you sit down order everything you want now. Then a couple decides to change their toddlers dirty diaper in the middle of the restaurant. Kid was standing up at the table while his dad wiped his bottom. That is not the staffs fault. But maybe a staff member could have asked the parents to possibly use the restroom?

I really wanted to like this place and was looking forward to it. I went there on Feb 2024. This place is not bad but clearly not great. I recommend the owners to take a hard honest look at their menu and make changes soon. The food is overall bland. For a place that charges this much for a meal the food must be exceptional. Lastly, if this is a french place then there are some clear dishes missing from the menu. Pros: Staff/service is great and the atmosphere is very good Cons: The food is bland and the place is expensive - Do not order the cod($30) or the pomme dauphine ($18)

EDIT/Update - I feel compelled to update my review. As you can see below we ate here a few days after they first opened and were a bit disappointed with the execution (not seasoned/bland flavors, etc). We tried it again last night for the first time since that initial experience and we had a GREAT meal. Not sure what they did in the back of the kitchen but all the dishes came out either solidly good or great. Seasoning was on point. The mussels are not a massive bowl but they definitely served a fair bit larger portion than our first time. We had a very good meal and were very happy. Our waiter was also excellent this time. ***************************************************** I hope the owner/chefs take this as constructive criticism. We live a cpl short blocks away and would love for this to be a new go-to spot, but they are missing the mark in a few spots. Im not a professional food critic but before moving to Austin 4 years ago we lived in NYC for 15 years and have eaten at plenty of fine French restaraunts along with casual French Bistros. I think a good casual neighborhood French bistro is one of my favorite. Atmosphere: Great! They did a wonderful job with the design. And Tiny Grocers is great. Food: French Onion - Was a solid good. Yeah, Ive have better but also had many not nearly as good as this. Endive - This was decent to just OK. Another reviewer stated it was bland, I kind of agree but still thought it was decent but would not order again unless its changed up. Just needs a little extra oomph. Maybe little extra dressing or something. I had a beet salad from Tiny Grocers that was fabulous and much better. Put that on the menu! Ocean Trout Tartare - A little better than the Endive, but still missing that something special. I would say it was good but could be much better. The fish was fresh and tasty and the occasional bites with a citrus segment were good but a little bland/lacking outside of that. Bureau de Poste Moules Frites - One of the most flavorful dishes but also completely missed the mark. The serving is just too small for an entree. Its a joke to put this under large plates. This is an appetizer size at best. If you want to charge more money for a larger serving then go for it. The flavor of the broth/sauce was really good. Unfortunately out of the small serving of mussels, three of them were completely closed tight and one was just a shell (lost mussel in cooking I guess, but not in our broth). This was basically a quarter of the dish since it was so few mussels. Ive cooked tons of mussels and clams, and this was probably just not cooked long enough. I kindly mentioned something to the waiter about the unopened mussels. He walked off to talk to the manager, which I just think was stressed out (per the waiter) and the waiter came back to assure us the manager says, they are good mussels and not bad. I dont have any doubt they arent good, just not fully cooked. Sure enough I get my knife to pry open the mussels and they are just raw. You can see and feel they were raw mussels. I didnt bring it up again bc I already did once and that shouldve been enough. This dish could be great though. Up the portion size even if you have to charge more and cook the dang mussels till they open. Ive had experiences with a few unopened mussels but thats typically been with a huge bowl so its like whatever. Steak Frites - This was probably my favorite dish, even though the mussels had the most potential. Good ribeye, cooked to order medium rare. I got the au poivre sauce, which was ok. Id try the maitre dhotel butter next time. That said it was a good steak frites. I gave 3 stars overall but would really give this 2.5, but in reality the potential is there for this to be a 4/5 star spot, but they need to work out some menu items and hospitality (lack of manager response) especially for the price point. I dont want this to discourage others as I do see the great potential here and it might be a 4/5 star spot in short time if they make some fixes.

He had a good experience with Phineas, and, luckily enough we were able to sit in his section. Phineas was very helpful in giving us an overview of the menu and knew the wine list intimately. We ordered the smoked trout tartare, hamburger, prawn special and a bottle of Pinot Noir. The food was flavorful and very well coursed. The atmosphere was lovely. I understand that new restaurants deserve a grace period but if you ve read a few of the other reviews, mediocre food and horrible service seem to be a pattern not an outlier. The ratatouille was an embarrassment to the dish - sloppy, dry, flavorless and the rest of the food was middle of the road and not memorable. But the service and management really took the cake. Our server brought us the incorrect bottle of wine, gaslit us and tried to convince us we ordered the wrong thing, the manager came to bring us a new bottle and didn t apologize just showed us the new bottle and said this look right? and walked away. Our server proceeded to ignore us all night and when we asked for an itemized receipt she told us that wasn t standard and she needed permission from her manager. Odd to see that when we saw our original bill vs the itemized, the itemized bill was $39 less the exact cost of the incorrect bottle delivered to our table. Restaurants have off nights but this is one Austin hot spot that I ll never give my business to again.

Had a wonderful dinner here with friends last weekend while in town visiting family. Each dish had thoughtful components with every little thing contributing to a perfect bite, and a wine list that did not dissapoint! The steak tartare had a nice acidity. Pommes dauphine were delicate, topped with salmon roe. Unsurprisingly, the duck cassoulet with perfectly crispy skin and the moules frites (we had them both ways) were impressive and big hits at the table - a french restaurant after all! Two dishes were unsuspecting favorites: the steak frites and ratatouille. I had expected the steak frites to be a bit... boring I suppose, but it was cooked to absolute perfection. My partner (who typically does not like steak rare) loved it. The ratatouille stood out to me because while I expect all stars like duck and mussels to be winners, elevating a simple vegetable dish is so underestimated and takes skill - no savory duck fat to hide behind. Incredible depth of flavor for such a simple dish. I cant wait to cone back - but maybe in summer so I can enjoy the patio :)

Lovely setting, great patio, and good food. The first plate with skate had rancid/bad fish (apparently skate can build up uric acid if not super fresh, which not only tastes like ammonia but can make you sick), but they quickly provided a replacement that was good. In our case, the menu was a bit troublesome as we require gluten free and there are not many options (and even things that seem like they might be safe are cross contaminated - e.g. frites - or else there is something non-essential in the dish that happens to have gluten). It would be great if they had a few substitution options or alternatives on the menu for people with food allergies. As it stands, its one of the less GF-friendly places in town. Tiny Grocer is great, too, and - somewhat ironically - has LOTS of GF items, including bread, baked items, etc. Maybe a few of those could find their way on to the menu as options? ;-) Would love to return, but will likely wait to see if the menu evolves a bit.

Very relaxing experience with a beautiful atmosphere. It felt good to let go of stress and unwind with a great glass of wine (a large by the glass selection) and visit with friends. If it s a casual date it s great to not feel rushed. Staff is friendly. Food taste fresh and gave me a feeling of French country dining.

Sipping a glass of wine and nibbling on french fries, you forget the place was once a post office. They slow things down a bit here, so whether youre having tomato bisque or mussels, the pace seems just about right. If youre into Steak Frites, its okay to share with a friend (add a side of green beans). There are fancy french names for all of these things, but Bureau de Poste isnt trying to be fancy. We dined on the patio. It seemed more elegant porch than ritzy dining room. Thats just how we like it in Austin.

Our actual waiter was amazing, but the continual asinine service upon arrival was ridiculous. We arrived 10 minutes prior to our reservation and were told in a snappy tone that they didnt start seating for another 10 minutes. Then the pissy guy just kept fiddling with his silverware as if he couldnt be bothered with any other conversation. We had to ask if we could sit at the bar for coffee to wait. Then when we sat at the bar for service, we were told we needed to go on the other side of the bar to order coffee even though we were literally right next to where they make it (and no one else was there at the bar, or in line). Then when 10 minutes passed, we had to go back outside to tell the host we had reservations, only to go back inside to be seated. Really?!? ...

Pommes Dauphine was good but very small portion for price. Burger was average and need some pickle or acid. Very heavy with mayo and brie as the toppings. Fries were delicious. Good wine list. Tomato soup could be creamier and the baguette could be better.

Came in on a first cold night in Austin this fall and very much enjoyed their onion soup, endive salad and shared the steak frites. On Monday night they have a flank steak special as well, which is a smaller portion for a little less money - but regular steak frites with a ribeye was done beautifully. Perfect fries too! The little store of specialty items has delicious things as well, nice to walk around and explore before or after dinner. Can t wait to be back! Steady stream of people even on a Monday night, so I suggest you make a reservation. Vegetarian options: Salad options and 2 main entries that are vegetation, including a burger

Food was so amazing, everything was fresh, well made, and presented beautifully. I had the skate wing fish and I can t recommend it enough. We really appreciated the service as well, everyone was so hospitable, especially our server (I believe her name is Ray? I may have misheard) we had a late reservation and ended up being the last ones out and never felt rushed or slighted at all to hurry out. Everything was clean and orderly. The only thing I would say could improve is having a to-go option for the desserts, logistically I m sure it s hard to figure out but I would have loved to take our dessert home to enjoy there.

Charming ambiance and delightful staff make this place a winner! However, theres room for improvement in the culinary department. The prices are a tad high for whats served, and the dishes were lacking the excitement we hoped for. The ratatouille, for example, had all the wrong consistency it felt like a very boring sauce. The remaining food options were just average. Let s hope that they are just calibrating and the food will improve with time. There is a lot of potential here.

Just a lovely dining experience! It s on a quiet corner in Hyde Park - the place itself is big, light, airy. There is a specialty grocer in one half of the place (I didn t get a chance to browse because I was enjoying the food and company). The service was great! Our server had all sorts of recommendations about pairing wine with the meals we wanted. And she made great recommendations. I ordered the house mussels (modules frites) and they were superb! Just the slightest hint of anise in the yummy broth. I ll definitely be back the next time I m in town!

Limited menu, French oriented with classic dishes (and some burgers - why?). Everything was good but below my expectations I made from the early articles and reviews. Portions were quite small, but decently priced. We had the mussels and fries, tartare, pommes dauphines, and the fish. The only one worth remembering is the pommes dauphine where the smoked trout eggs were an excellent idea perfectly completing the taste. Don t eat outside, the insects will drink your wine

Incredibly disappointing. We ordered the cheeseboard, pommes dauphine, ratatouille, and vegan burger. Admittedly, we may not have chosen the star dishes, but if something is going on the menu, it needs to be good. Every single dish we had was a huge disappointment. The food was very overpriced for its quality it all really felt like it could have been served at a casual chain restaurant. A lot of it was bland, and the fries and mushroom burger came room temperature. There was no warmth to the fries at all. Shocking to me for a restaurant that charges these prices. No issues with service so two stars instead of one, but I m still in shock at how quickly the meal went downhill.

Had a really great time dining with BDP. Our server was Ray and she provided a really great experience. The food was fantastic we had the Pomme Dauphine which was mind blowing and I could eat dozens of them. Then we followed with the ocean trout tar tar. This was yummy but the thing I liked the least from our meal. There is a fish tar tar at another place in Austin that is served in a bowl that sits on a bunch of ice and it keeps the fish super cold and yummy. Also maybe some rice paper chips. Then we had our entrees which was a really well priced for what you get Steak Frites. We got the pepper sauce which we would get again. It was cooked perfectly and felt like a high quality steak. We got a side of carrots which came extremely roasted and with a delicious cream. I loved it. For 2 people it was portioned well as a side. The star of our dinner was the Duck Coullete. This was one of the best dishes I ve had in a long time in Austin. Every part of the dish was fantastic and melded together perfectly. We also got 2 desserts both extremely tasty and well portioned All in all it was a great meal and we want to go back very soon.

We went for brunch. The food was good but may be not good enough to justify such high prices on certain items. Also, we notice some inconsistencies - one crepe very thick, one nice and thin. Service is slow. We were seated in front of the kitchen and we could see being taken away immediately, so préparation delay is the issue. Good ambiance.

Had a nice meal here. Not sure why there are so many 1 star reviews. We enjoyed the Pomme Dauphine (croquettes), Poisson a la planchet (skate), and Duck leg cassoulet. The price is what youd expect to pay at a French Bistro - about $50 per person on food alone. I will say that the escargot could use more garlic and the ratatouille could use more flavors. Regardless, the outdoor patio was nice and there was live music while we were there (Saturday night).

Yum! Im not much of a seafood person, so I cant speak to the mussels or trout, but woahhh the duck cassoulet was amazing. Its a hard dish to get right, and they just nailed it. Tried a bite of my buddys steak and that was amazing too - definitely coming back for that with some pepper sauce. Ive been around the European block a few times, and Im super impressed to find this level quality French food in Texas - and they havent even been open a week!

We were really looking forward to trying this new place in the neighborhood, a French restaurant in walking distance sounded quite appealing. Lets start with the positive: the location is nice and the service was good. We sat out on the patio and the overall vibe and atmosphere is good, the theme reminded me a bit of a maritime vibe, perhaps because of the blue and white striped seat cushions. Unfortunately, the food was of mediocre quality at best and considering that quality, in my opinion is highly overpriced. For starters we had the beef tartare and the escargots. The beef tartare was OK, in my opinion the beef was not chopped finely enough, but the overall dish was acceptable. One thing that immediately stood out here is that for two dishes that both go with bread, we were served 4(!) tiny slices of baguette. We did get 4 additional tiny slices after asking but the fact that we would even have to ask seems absurd. For the mains we had the moules et frites and the pork chop which was the daily special. Here, it really started to unravel. The mussels were served in a standard broth and that in itself was still OK. The issue I had here is that for $24 we were served a tiny portion. Even worse, the French fries that came with the dish were also served as a tiny portion. Aside from the serving size, the French fries were also not good, they resemble McDonalds style shoestring fries and that is definitely not what you want with moules frites. If you want to fashion yourself as a French restaurant and cant make proper French fries, then that is a big issue. Hopfields down the street, as a comparison, serves excellent moules frites for $21. They serve it with a large amount of actual, twice-fried French fries, a large amount of mussels and a very tasty and savory broth. The Hopfields version provides a highly satisfying experience that I am looking for in mussels with French fries, the version at Bureau de Poste feels like an amateurish attempt to imitate the real thing, and at an inflated price at that. On first glance, the pork chop seemed fine, a bunch of issues here as well though. While the chop seemed properly cooked for the most part, as we were getting closer to the bone, we started seeing raw pork. This is simply not acceptable and is a sign of either bad planning or extremely sloppy execution. The seasoning was fine, but overall the taste here was again mediocre at best, the same can be said for the mashed potatoes on the side. And here again, the price of $36 seems highly inflated considering the quality of the food. As a comparison, the pork chop at Justines is much, much better, both from a perspective of preparation and taste. In summary, the culinary experience here was very poor. And while one might be inclined to provide some leeway as the restaurant just opened, a lot of things here are not just attributable to execution problems but demonstrate a fundamental lack of understanding of what French food is actually like. Its a pity, as we really wanted to like this place. In essence, what the place has going for it is the location and overall setup, however the culinary experience just doesnt measure up. If you are looking for French-style food, both Justines and Hopfields provide a much, much better experience.

Hubby and I enjoyed our first dining experience at this newly opened restaurant, aptly named in memory of the former post office at 43rd and Speedway. The outdoor setting was exceptional, one of the best Ive ever enjoyed in Austin. We got to sit against the south wall facing Tiny Grocer and observe the beautiful lighting, live trees, and everything happening inside and outside, all with a reasonable noise level, and perfect-for-dining temperatures. (By contrast, the indoor dining space was very loud and very cold when I checked it out.) We appreciated the kindness, consideration, and professionalism shown to us by everyone we interacted with. Staff were knowledgeable and helpful about food and wine descriptions and pairings. The choices we ordered, trout tartare, burger, and cassoulet, were good to very good. The trout tartare was very fresh; it couldve used more citrus pieces, and perhaps some thinly sliced chives or green onions to liven it up. And wed recommend automatically serving it with bread, or at least asking diners if theyd like it served with bread. The cassoulet was made with high quality ingredients, but couldve been more flavorful. The burger was a bit blah, and the two patties were on the dry side. Overall, we had a wonderfully memorable dining experience, and look forward to returning to this welcome addition to the Hyde Park neighborhood.

Very over priced. My daughter ordered pommes dauphines and she received only 4 pommes dauphines. Compared to her sister, she chose their the kids menu that finally have far more to eat than all of us. We did order the mussels fries and we did end with a little bowl of mussels and a very tiny bowl of fries. On the few mussels that we have, we had 3-4 empty inside.... Food was good but clearly over priced. It is so cheap for a restaurant to serve a good amount of mussels and fries, at least put the quantity to make us happy. Do you know that in France, a lot of restaurants even propose one free refill of mussels and this is a far bigger amount. Hope you will make some efforts and maybe if we read better reviews in the future we will come back

Our party of four went to the restaurant last night and I can only express our experience as utter disappointment with an extravagant price tag. We ordered the potato croquettes and we were served four over cooked mounds. The endive salad was bland and the chef forgot the cheese. After nearly two hours we were served our main courses which were uneventful. The hamburger was served with lukewarm fries and the chicken($35) was served on a bed of greens. Having lived in Germany for many years and having dined at traditional French restaurants, this place is an imposter at best. We complained to the manager who did stop by our table and comped the salad and gave us two free desserts. We were expecting a bit more since our bill for two appetizers and three entrées along with drinks came to $245. Please do yourself a favor and eat somewhere else.
