I recently visited the Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve and had an overall enjoyable experience. The hike was pleasant, with trails ranging from easy to moderate, though some sections did have a bit of a steep incline. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, making the experience even better. I appreciated that the trails were clearly marked with signs, which made navigation a breeze. Public restrooms are also available, which is a nice convenience. However, the water features were somewhat disappointing due to low rainfall, resulting in algae-filled areas. Additionally, some of the views were marred by telephone towers and the faint hum of traffic, which took away from the natural ambiance. Despite these minor drawbacks, I would still recommend a visit.

This is more of a 4.5/5 - the .5 is just the signs can be a bit confusing since the trailhead isn t labelled. You ll have to remember that Laurel connects directly to the trailhead when you re making your way back! Decent mix of trails with trees providing shade and trails with direct light, little hands-on gardens, and historical signage

Lovely natural preserve with several trails up and down hills, along ridges, and across creeks. Has a nature center with displays and a restroom. Was fortunate to arrive early enough on the weekend to use the QR code at the gate to still get admission. I recommend planning ahead and making a reservation in advance. Visited on

Gorgeous amazing hike. A good selection of short tails ranging from .1 miles to .6 minutes. Though they do link together so I had taken 3 small trails to and from and it ended up 1.1 miles. Theres even a cool little waterfall in the south west corner. In the research center, it seems very education based. They are passionate about teaching about the local wildlife. I saw a flyer about a guided Saturday tour. I cant remember all the details but Im definitely going to look into it.

Wild Basin is an absolutely delightful nature walk. There is visual interest with the trees and mental engagement with the terrain. There is an adorable small waterfall and a scenic overlook. The trails are well marked and offer mostly easy paths but there are plenty of roots, steps, rocks and rock stairs. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience.

Review for Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve: Do not bring your dogs as this is a persevere. I had an amazing experience during my recent hike at Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve! From the moment I arrived, the staff greeted me with warmth and enthusiasm. They generously showed me around the preserve and provided a helpful map of the trails, which was also available for virtual download. The well-maintained trails were a delight to explore, surrounded by the beautiful wilderness. I appreciated the dedication and care put into keeping the preserve in top shape. During operating hours, the creative research center is air conditioned, offering a pleasant retreat to cool off and take a break with clean bathrooms Overall, I highly recommend Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve to everyone, whether you are a seasoned hiker or a newcomer to the outdoors. The preserve offers a perfect blend of friendly hospitality, well-maintained trails, and beautiful scenery. It s truly a hidden gem that should be on every nature lover s bucket list. I can t wait to return for another memorable adventure!

I really enjoyed this trail! First off, I didn t have the pleasure of meeting Elvis at the check in booth, but the lady that did check me in was really friendly and helpful. There is ample parking and assuming since this is by reservation only you will always have a spot to park. There are restrooms at the trail head, but I did not see any water stations throughout the entire hike. You may want to bring some because you will probably need it. I imagine this trail is brutal during the summer (there is a good bit of shade on the trails though). On a 80-degree day it was definitely perfect! The trail was very clean and very well maintained. I did not see one piece of trash anywhere. You don t see any dogs since they aren t allowed and I only ran into others hiking a couple of times. It was as if I had the trail to myself! I prefer challenging trails and at first, I thought this was going to be too easy for my liking. When I got about halfway through, though, I saw the steep grades more and then knew it would be harder than I thought which was good. Still wasn t terribly difficult but my legs do feel it now hours later. There are a good bit of steep grades so you will have to pick up those hammies. I kept on the outskirts of the trail and then I realized that there are off shoot trails which take you in the middle from one side to the other. I found these trails to be fun so don t miss those. Everywhere along the trails made for great pictures. I didn t see any wildlife or snakes (thank God) and only saw a handful of Texas Yellow Stars. There are several benches throughout so, if you do get too tired you can always stop and take a rest. The creek was nice and there was actually a good bit of stream water today. Of course, this also set up for a beautiful waterfall which I greatly enjoyed sitting and listening to for a while. Even though you can hear the cars on the highway it was still a serene hike. I tried to take a good pic of the waterfall but where you have to stand to view it or snap a pic there is a tree limb conveniently sagging which obstructs your view. Where s my chainsaw when I need it! Lol. At the end of your hike, they have a Research Center however, they were not open for some reason. Overall, for the $5 I paid for just myself it was well worth it! Also, please donate which can be easily added to your cost of the ticket. It s easy and worth it!

I like that the trail options are interconnected loops so there are many distance options for hiking and if you get tired you can choose to come back on a shorter loop. The trails are on an incline so keep in mind that the return hike is uphill. It was not very busy when we visited on a Tuesday afternoon and we got a personal welcome to the nature center. The security guard was very helpful and informative and he found my lost wallet and returned it to me.

We first visited over 20 years ago, taking our small children at the time. Just returned and its a reminder that we have a lovely preserve right in the heart of west Austin. The trails are well maintained and most of the way is pretty easy. There are some light ups and downs, but nothing strenuous. Nice waterfall area too. The entire perimeter is about 3k.

Be aware- Saw a entrance sign saying weekends now need reservations as of July 31st. Very nice quiet park with stone covered trails. Short trails can be combined to do a 2 mile or so loop. See photo. Mostly shaded. Nice overlook views with benches. Trails are easy to see and signs. Lots of stepping up and down rock steps. Ive only gone on evenings on weekdays and no crowds at all. Plenty of parking. One toilet in parking lot, had no water. Be aware its easy to miss entrance road. You only see sign when you start to enter

Super super friendly staff and a basically empty, pleasant trail (granted it was 102 degrees in the middle of the day on Saturday). You need to reserve in advance but I was able to do it online in the car right before going in. There s a very small waterfall/creek that s too shallow for swimming, and it s a short, easy hike down to get there. In total there are like maybe 3 miles of trails.

We were looking for a place to go on a walk/hike before heading to the airport and this is where we chose. What a nice Preserve. The trails are well maintained and marked. We did a loop that included going to the waterfall (we only had an hour). There were a couple creek crossing that could be problematic for some and the trail was steep (as warned by signage) in one part. I wish we had more time to walk on all the trails, maybe next time. Monday thru Friday there is no cost to enter. The security guard, Elvis, was friendly and informative. Unless I missed more parking, there isnt a whole lot but there are constructing a bathroom and maybe spaces were being taken up by that.

Now the nature here is beautiful, but the best part of the experience came from the security guard that was working when I pulled in. I had never been here so I asked him to run through the preserve for me, he launched into an incredible overview of what they had to offer full of character and charm! It was honestly an incredible sales pitch and if he were trying to sell me a membership to hike there, I probably would have bought. That level of helpfulness and friendliness from security staff is so rare and it made the experience great! The hike itself offers about as much variation as the Austin area nature has to offer. Theres good elevation change, some nice rivers, and an advertised waterfall that is small but cute.

I was very impressed and I hope many others have the chance to visit this place and engage with the wonderful staff there.

This place is a nice, beautiful walk that at point I thought I was lost, but all you have to do is pay attention to the signs and youll figure where you are. We went on a guided hike here with our homeschool group, and Wild Basin was wonderful! They graciously hosted our group on a day they usually dont have guides available because that was the only day of the week we could come. We were divided into two small groups one for older kids and one for younger ones which allowed the guides to tailor both the hike length and the information provided. The guides were personable and engaging, and the kids had a great time. Several moms mentioned that their kids were bubbling with excitement on the ride home, going on and on about the cool things they had learned.

Great place to hike with kids or solo. Waterfall is cool. Like that it is only open to hikers. No dogs or bikes allowed.

This is a great little park in Austins hill country! There are several small trials that we combined together for a 2.3 mile hike. It was pretty easy although there were some parts with a bit of steep elevation gain and a couple of slightly tricky creek crossings. But there was a beautiful little water fall and some really nice hill country views! The attendant was very helpful and friendly.

This trail is dense, clean and clearly marked. Id recommend grabbing a trail map from the visitor center before your hike- its easy to get turned around but worth a visit for the amazing views. You can see for miles on a clear day.

I have been walking here since I was a kid growing up in Austin. It is just a beautiful escape from the city and the waterfall is really calming. Be careful to get out before they close at sunset. Also a lot of uphill hiking so is a great little workout if you choose that route, but you may want to avoid with older friends that may have trouble with stairs and uphill walks.

Mostly you get the feeling of being in a nature preserve rather than on a very manicured trail, especially as the path descends towards the creek. Higher up the trail is beautiful in a scrubby, Cedar, limestone, Texas sort of way, becoming beautiful in a Hobbit grotto sort of way near the waterfall. It is mostly quiet, though the traffic on highway 360 highway is quite noticeable in some places.

Visited on a cludy drizzling day but the trail was nice. We went just for the waterfall. There was only one portable restroom but very clean

Just wow. Short but steep hikes with great hill country views. No water though so kids should enjoy the walk and occasional scramble.

Best place for hiking with a kid, especially toddler. Very clean and fresh. I like the no-smoking sign. Fantastic place to hike without breathing in the cigarette. And no dog, what a wonderful place!
