Update: Go for the steak frites night every Tuesday. It was outstanding - tempura battered fries are the fries of my dreams. Great happy hour spot! The food was super interesting and the wine options were great. Standouts we re the crispy rice, stroop waffles and fried chicken. Plus we had an awesome waiter who chatted with us at the bar. We will definitely be back!

Cute vibes, and a different take on Korean food. Food: we had the fried chicken, seasonal salad, and the wagyu. When looking around.. sooo many people had the fried chicken and our server told us they were known for their fried chicken and wagyu steak- which is why we got both. The fried chicken was a bit of a letdown for me. It was dry, wasn t that crispy, and the flavor wasn t out of this world- just tasted like toasted seaweed because of the nori flakes. Idk just didn t get the hype for $36 for a very small half bird. The wagyu was good tho, if not a bit sweet. Think bulgogi sauce marinaded. They had a great dipping sauce, but the meat wasn t particularly tender and I wasn t even asked what temperature I like my steak. It came out med rare. The kimchi that accompanied it was a cantaloupe kimchi.. which was ok, not my fav. The side pear salad tho was delicious, but still.. $18 for a side of pears and cucumbers. Atmosphere was good. Very vibey and cute. There s a parking garage connected and they validate parking.

Too loud if you go at peak times. (Updated!) I have been there twice recently and the noise was not an issue. The fried chicken is perfect, ask for a wine pairing that works. Also, the tempura veggies are amazing. For dessert, we ordered the layered cake, its ok. Not amazing. The service though, those waiters LOVE THEIR JOB!

My new favorite spot in Austin. Every bite was unique, texturally delightful, and exploding with flavor. As a non-steak person, the Tuesday Night steak frites are not only an insane deal, but one of the most delicious things I ve tasted in recent memory (that wagyu hanger steak almost had me in tears and helloooooo tempura French fries! I ll have dreams about you!). We tried the scallion pajeon, crab on crispy rice, all the kimchis (tomato and peach were the stars!), summer peach salad, the pastrami fried rice, steak frites, and the dark chocolate silvanas (what I lovingly termed Grown Up Dunk-A-Roos). All out of this world. Save us a seat, Underdog, because we ll be back very soon! Parking: Park in the building parking garage. Underdog validates. Just ask for a validation slip when you get your check.

I wouldn t really consider this place for anyone who would want to try Korean food. It s such a weird price point for the quality. And the kimchi tasted oddly too garlicky and limp. Like it needed a few more days to ferment. I wouldn t come back here. But . I have to say this is a GREAT wine bar. People are nice and knowledgeable

We love Underdog. The food is great and allows you to pick and choose a light to hearty meal. Kimchi sampler, scallion pajeon, mushroom skewers, fried chicken, crispy fried rice bowl are great. The wine list is amazing. They have a corkage fee if you want to bring your own wine. We liked the twisted donut dessert so much, we order one at the start and end the next time we came in. Vegetarian options: Crispy rice bowl is an extremely tasty vegetarian option. Scallion pajeon, mushroom skewers and tempura can also be pieced together to help make hearty meal.

We came in as a four top to try the tasting menu. The service was super rushed, and even though we never really had the time to sit and appreciate any of the courses, they honestly werent impressive or memorable in any way. I cant remember anything about what we had unless I look at the pictures I took, and then Im like, oh yeah, that. The vibe was ok, the employees were very nice. Not a place Id go again, personally. Id prefer to spend a little more and get a better experience, and now I know that. And to be fair, the last tasting menu I had was at Barley Swine, which is always fantastic and a high bar to match.

Our FAVORITE place in ATX we went for the happy hour and atmosphere and had to stay for another full meal because it was SO AMAZING. From the moment we stepped in, the ambiance was inviting and warm, I never wanted to leave. The staff were incredibly welcoming and attentive. Every little detail of our experience was perfect. OK, now the food - wow! Each dish was a masterpiece of flavors and presentation. I had the Ebi Burger with caviar frites on HH and I am forever changed. Can I put caviar on everything now? (See pic for answer, yes) And the wine selection? Impeccable. The staff guided us through a perfect pairing that elevated our meals to another level. We cant wait to return and explore more of their menu. Thank you to the entire team for a truly incredible evening! Dietary restrictions: Bonus: Matched all of our dietary requests and many options that supported our vegetarian friends with us!

I recently dined at Underdog, and while the experience had its highs, it also had some significant lows. The atmosphere was pleasant, with a cozy and inviting ambiance that set the tone for a relaxing evening. The wine selection was great, offering a variety of excellent choices to complement the meal. Unfortunately, the main dish I order (Pork Tonkatsu) was a major disappointment. It was so overwhelmingly salty that it was virtually inedible. This was a letdown, considering the restaurant s reviews. For dessert, I ordered the Matcha Tiramisu, hoping to end the meal on a high note. While the flavor was decent, the tiramisu itself was dry, lacking the creamy texture that is characteristic of this classic Italian dessert. On a positive note, the service was friendly and attentive throughout the evening, which somewhat balanced out the culinary shortcomings. Overall, while Underdog excels in certain areas, such as atmosphere and wine selection, there are significant improvements needed in the kitchen to enhance the dining experience.

Very disappointed I have to give this place two stars. I really wanted to like it. To be clear, the food was good and they strive to create a good ambiance. The experience really came off the rails at the end because of two things: 1) they put a 3% staff convenience fee on the check. I can t express how annoying that is. Don t get me wrong, please take care of your employees, but just make the menu prices reflect what you need to pay them a good wage. 2) Between the fee and my added tip it was effectively 20% of the bill. Standard for good service. The waitress had the audacity to come by the table before we had left to snidely and sarcastically ask me if the service was okay or if she had done something wrong . She was attempting to embarrass me, that much was clear. I could have leaned in and returned the favor but instead we simply thanked them for the time and left. Simply put, we will not be back. It s unfortunate because I really wanted this place to become one of our local spots. Instead, it reeks of entitlement and I ll heed this warning to my social cohort.

I recently visited Underdog after hearing their one-year anniversary announcement and the subsequent release of a special, 6-course tasting menu. Overall, the experience was fine. Several tables seated after mine were served their courses ahead of ours and on three occasions the waitress apologized for the delay though not addressing the whole table, just one individual who then had to relay the message to everyone else. I will give them that they were quick to replenish our water and ask if we wanted refills on our $15 Negronis. Once we wrapped dessert, it was an additional 15-minute wait to settle up. Mind you, all this ate well into the 2-hour parking validation they offer, so during the meal, I did have to move my car to avoid paying an additional fee. At the end of the meal, I was surprised when there was no effort made to amend the lapses in service possibly removing the $15 ssam bowl (which was just white rice, lettuce, and sambal) would ve felt like some type of apology. The food was good, though the accouterments to the oysters washed out the taste of the actual oysters rather than complimenting it much like the nori pesto did with the salmon roe. We did not do the wine pairing, and I was content with that choice as the serving sizes were so small that I am sure by the fourth course I wouldn t have been able to discern much of what I d eaten afterward, the alcohol dulling my taste buds. I was happy I tried it and don t feel as though I need to go back, nor would I recommend it to others. For reference, the tasting menu was $95 and the standard wine pairing would ve been $85. I think other tasting menus give you more bang for your buck and wine pairings that are a more reasonable price all with more attentive service. Parking: Parking validation valid for 2 hours.

Underdog was great. We started with the scallion pancake which was delicious. It was dusted with scallion powder which was also delicious, as was the dipping sauce. I ordered the fried chicken. It was a very generous portion that 2 people could easily share. It was half of a chicken. It was so delicious, I practically ate the whole thing myself. It had a thinly battered exterior, fried to a perfect golden crispiness. It was also dusted with the scallion powder, which was a perfect accompaniment. My partner ordered the crispy rice with vegetables and a jammy egg. Though he enjoyed it, I found it way too spicy, and I like spicy food. It was loaded with red peppers (serrano?) and that should be pointed out on the menu. Overall, a delicious meal that we enjoyed. A note about the chicken which would have made it more pleasant to eat - that powder dusted all over it made quite a mess on my hands. It would be helpful if they would serve the chicken entree with a wet washcloth so you can clean your hands while you re eating. I asked for a wet towel when we were done and was brought some paper towelettes, which did not do the job. An easy fix to offer the customer.

We eat a lot of Korean food in Austin and were very excited to try this place out. Unfortunately, its one of those places that didnt live up to the hype. In writing this I was shocked to see the reviews were as high as they were. Our biggest problem here was that the food was sub-par for the prices they are charging - there are lots of places where you can pay $150-400 USD for a meal in Austin and that meal is out of this world delicious. Not here. It seemed like the problem was in the conception of these dishes, there was no thought as to how flavor would be built, and most were lacking in fat AND salt so that the flavor fell flat. Including the dumplings, which was a massive disappointment. My partner ordered their beef short rib (their most popular item) the meat came out tough, and was completely unseasoned. For $44 a plate, you expect properly seasoned food. Every single dish I tried came out far too hot to be served without a warning. I did not get a warning on our starter and burned the inside of my mouth. I had to wait over 5 minutes for my entree to cool down before eating as well. Their wine list is extensive, however, if you want a cocktail their options are extremely limited mostly to aperol spritz type drinks. If thats not your thing youre out of luck. As far as service, you could tell the waitstaff was doing their best and were friendly. I believe they may be understaffed. However, our waitress didnt put in our starter until far after we ordered it (she put it in with our entree) which was upsetting because we had ordered it 15 minutes before ordering an entree. The restaurant itself is beautifully designed. If youre going for pictures, this place is nice, but most of us are going to eat.

We had a 5:30 res which allowed us to get a 1/2 priced bottle of natural, funky wine (normally $120) and up to $11 off per plate of the apps we would have ordered anyway. One of the best meals I ve had in Austin to date. I booked the dinner expecting it to be Korean street food based on some of the photos from instagram. It was nothing like that. Elevated Korean food that blew me away. All the dishes were different, no blending of lots of similar flavors. Kimchi wasn t over powering and complimented all the main grilled items. The Galbi was unlike any I had before and the best I ve had. It was thick, not overly sweat. Was like a steak. The steak tartar was amazing and probably my favorite of the night though it s very hard to pick. I hope this place does a better job of marketing its food because it deserves to be one of the busiest restaurants in Austin every night of the week. Can t wait to go back. If im being picky and trying to give a tiny bit of constructive criticism to take the meal to complete perfection, I d say the pork belly may have been just slightly astringent due to the fat being charred in the grill process. I d happily order and eat it the same way again. Just saying for complete perfection.

The beef tartare is really good! The beef is fatty and tender, with right balance taste of meat and dressing. The chips could be thicker, currently it s thin, cannot dig up the beef. The grilled beef tongue is also good! The meat is in thick cut, doesn t like Korean BBQ type of cutting. The beef tongue were grilled in perfect timing, locking the juice in the meat. And the sauce matches well. The grilled Shishito peppers is a bit under-grilled. I would prefer it to be softer.

Why am I not surprised? If we love it restaurants kill it. Food was still good on our second visit, but dishes are very pricey. Kimchi and Pork dumplings- $14 for only 5! The service a little bizarre. However, the reason youre deserving of a 1-star review is because of the outrageous $15 parking fee! This is South First, not Downtown and your validation which only affords you a $2 discount was frankly insulting. It was nice knowing you Underdog! I wont be back. They have happy hour on Saturday! We ordered everything on their happy hour including the snap peas, sweet potato donuts and the pork and kimchi mandu (dumpling). Everything was so flavorful and so good! The sweet potato donuts come with a cheesy, savory, almost foam like spread that complimented the donut so well. Its not sweet, so dont be expecting it be like a dessert donut. The snap peas with the black garlic aioli was a nice combination. The snap peas were charred and came with a wedge of lemon for some acid.. loved those! We also ordered the caviar stroopwafel bites (not on HH) which were divine!! The stroopwafel gave it a slight sweet flavor with the salty caviar.. they were honestly perfect little bites each time. We decided to order the bulgolgi burger and it did not disappoint. The fries were incredible and the double smash patty was so filling, my friends and I split everything including this burger and we were pretty satisfied! The service was 10/10. Our waiter gave us great recommendations and everyone was so attentive! Will definitely be coming back!

I was excited to check this place out but left underwhelmed. Might try it again in case we caught them on an off night, but probably wont. Food was poorly timed, generally overpriced for the quality, and the $24 bulgogi burger was extremely dry Good: - Nice interior design and good ambiance in general - Great wine program overall, and we loved the wine we ordered - The crab on rice dish was delicious Bad: - The bulgogi burger sounded good, but was so dry that it wasnt worth finishing. No one else in our group were particularly excited by their entrees either. - Food timing was totally off, both in terms of how long it took for different courses to come out and that some people in our party had to wait another 10 minutes for their main course after everyone else got theirs

Visited Underdog with some friends for a happy hour (5-6pm) this week, very cute place! Smaller menu, but all the things we tried were delicious. There are some unique wines available as well, and we enjoyed all of them! A little pricier but it s a nice place and I would recommend it!

Yes! I wish I could give them more than 5 stars. What a lovely experience! Their HH is so approachable for incredible quality. This team has an incredible wine program with natural wines sourced from all over the globe (you can also buy bottles from the shop attached!) Loved the oysters, hotteok, ebi burger, fried chicken & homemade ranch, and whatever you do, don t skip dessert on this one. Bravo, team.

I don t know how to keep my review of Underdog brief but I ll certainly try. The TLDR is: shockingly unwelcoming and I don t know how the owner ended up in hospitality. I walked up to the restaurant on a Wednesday at 4 not realizing it didn t open until 5. So I went next door to the bottle shop which was open and explained to that to owner that I was there early but I had invited a large group, maybe 10 or so, of people to a casual happy hour starting at 5. I asked if I could come inside and hang out for awhile because I was running early. I was not initially met with any objections. They have a large table that runs along the length of the shop with chairs and so I sat my stuff down. She walked towards the back and asked if I had made a reservation to which I replied oh no, I didn t think I needed one. (A friend specifically recommended this placed because of that and their site touts not needing them and I needed a low key spot for people to come and go.) Her reply was Well if you don t offer reservations in Austin, no on comes which was my first red flag. I was handed a menu and asked if I wanted a glass of wine and said not yet but eventually. I believe I was also asked if I needed the Wi-Fi to which I said that was ok I would just use my phone. I took a call and then within a minute or two of my call while sitting in front of my computer, was given another menu by another employee and continued my call. Within maybe another minute, the owner then walks up to me, interrupting a very distressing call and said extremely rudely so, this is NOT A WeWork. I can t just have you sitting here working . Absolutely stunned, I looked up and was like huh? She then pointed out that her employees needed to work putting away boxes of wine and she needed to draw boundaries. I was so shocked and said that I could order a glass of wine if I needed? but her reply was Well I don t want you to have to do that. You can go work at Picnik next door . So as I grabbed my stuff to leave feeling so jarred because I was clearly getting kicked out, she said I can tell you re having a bad day . Like WHAT?!!! Yes and Im about to have about 10 people, here as I mentioned! So, I went next door to Blue Suede and hung out and bought a glass of wine and took my call and hung out where everyone is friendly and welcoming. In short this lady has absolutely no business owning a restaurant or hospitality business here in Austin. Unfortunately I had to go back as planned and we spent almost $500 and it is unreal how unimpressive the treatment was. No one in my party or any of my friends will ever be back. They also accidentally charged us a 40% tip and grabbed one of my guests wine well before she was finished. They also DONT validate parking even though I was specifically told they do. They only offer a $2.00 discount which is very different and doesnt make much difference for a $15 ticket. Good riddance Underdog hope a friendlier spot place comes along when it shuts down.

We had a wonderful Sunday lunch here. The space is beautiful with a lot of natural light & great decor. The bar is gorgeous, and it has a beautiful wine bar attached. The staff was very friendly and accommodating to my friend s fish allergy. The food was beautifully presented and delicious. My favorites were the fried chicken, blue crab & trout roe on crispy rice, and the snap peas with black garlic aioli! They also had a great wine selection:)

Service was decent. The restaurant was incredibly loud for some reason, despite being tiny. Wine selection was limited and overpriced. The food was insanely bad. Everything was super dry, bland. and overpriced. Korean fusion but nothing came with rice? The galbi was solid mid, not very flavorful, and dry..for $45. The fried chicken was grey and unseasoned and so dry it barely had 3 edible bites of food... for $35. The bread tasted like canned crescent dough and was served with oversalted butter... for $12. To leave hungry and dissatisfied is incredibly upsetting especially when the bill is that high. Again, the staff was good but everything else? 0 stars, dont recommend. There are far better places at this price point.

Arrived before 6pm on a Friday and got to order off the happy hour menu, which was honestly a deal and possibly a new offering. Everything we tried was delicious and well executed: the softest sweet potato donuts with a fun mousse-like cheese sauce, ebi burger, oysters, orange wine, and spritzer. We also ordered the bulgogi burger and crispy rice with blue crab + roe off the regular menu, which were similarly excellent (albeit pricey). Ambience and service were on point. Ill definitely be back, especially if HH is a regular thing.

We ordered a salad, a ribeye steak, and a bowl of mussels and clams . We ask that all three items be delivered simultaneously as they were our dinners for the three of us at the table. They brought out the salad almost immediately, and it sat untouched for 10 minutes when the mussels and clams arrived. I had just explained that I was from Boston, and I loved clams, and yet when I looked down in the bowl, they were about 15 or so mussels, and exactly two clams. I told them that this was not what I expected, and I was told that there would be an upcharge to add more clams. I said that if there was going to be an upcharge to get what was listed on the menu, then I didn t want the dish at all. To their credit, they did bring out a new bowl and it was about 50-50 as it should ve been the first time, without a warning that it would cost me more. Even then, we waited yet another 10 minutes, and the salad for the one member in our party, sat again untouched, when my second order of mussels and clams arrived. Those two dishes sat waiting, and finally after another five or 10 minutes, the steak finally arrived. The food was very good, but bringing out dinners in a staggered fashion, was disappointing.

I came with a group of six and we ordered most of the dishes, had three bottles of wine. We shared it among all of us and every bit of it was exceptional. The wine and sommelier, knowledge of the staff, the kind, attentive, and welcoming demeanor of everyone who spoke to us blew us all away. I haven t had better wine anywhere else and the food is very well crafted. This place made us feel like family and we left in such high spirits. We had no trouble finding acceptable parking. It was a little loud in the beginning but it was not long before we were totally comfortable contributing to the noise.

Somms: You finally have another worthy place to visit regularly in Austin. Stemware is top-notch...not going to be beat in Austin. Enter the Underdog (no pun intended). We came by around 5:30pm on a Sunday and sat at the bar. Service was excellent--the staff is very knowledgeable and we lucked into finishing a bottle of Cab Franc typically not available by the glass. Its so nice to see a wine place focus on diversity in the menu. The caviar waffle was great, but the foie gras maki roll w spicy roe and pear was excellent. The green goddess and ssamjang dips w market vegetables were fabulous, w my wife and I enjoying both but preferring opposites. 5 stars. This is a venue worth the visit and the return.

This place is really cute. At first we were a little shocked/turned off by the prices, but once we tasted the food we were captivated by the flavors. The pork belly was beyond tender and the stroopwaffle with caviar was the perfect bite. It got a little loud in the restaurant but once again the food pulls you right back in. Service was also really great, so overall just a fantastic experience.

The wine list and wine store (not to mention the wine glasses and ambience) are amazing. A wonderful place to wind down alone with a yummy glass of wine, have date night, or din with the gals. Staff is also super friendly and helpful - to both humans and dogs. 10/10 recommend.

We loved the welcome from the manager, and their entire staff! We pretty much ordered the entire menu with no regrets. Highlights were the caviar service, hotteok, muscles, ebi (shrimp burger), kalbi. Richard the co-owner recommended the most amazing wine for our group. Great dinner with friends, was made to feel at home and the utmost care and thoughtfulness in the menu and service.

Great potential, just need to sort out their acoustics. We had some great wine and food here and were overall happy with the experience aside from the noise. From the sound of it they are working with a company to dampen the sound but right now on a busy Friday night it s extremely loud so I ended up moving to sit next to my date so we could hear each other. Definitely reccomend the bread and butter on the menu and the ebi burger. Service was very good and accommodating. Will definitely come back but looking forward to when they fix the sound.

I wanted to recommend this place, but I really can t. I was so excited when I heard about the concept, but Underdog was beyond disappointing. If you re looking for a casual and fun spot on S 1st, this place is not it. First issue for me was they don t validate parking, even though they re located on one of the busiest and most difficult to park areas of central Austin. Second, and probably biggest issue, was the prices. I thought it was suspicious when their website did not list prices online, but I went anyway. I came here for a drink with a friend after work (peak happy hour) and we were so flabbergasted by the prices that we almost left right away. Underdog has A) no kind of happy hour specials whatsoever, which is fine, but B) the LEAST expensive bottle of wine on the ENTIRE menu is $58. Glasses start at $18, and if you want more than a bite of food you re looking at $50 a person (minus drinks). With exorbitant prices like that, Underdog is not a place that caters to the average Austinite, and not a place I d be likely to return. While the vibe was nice and the staff was friendly, this is not a place to hang. Half a block away from Underdog is Lenoir, which already fits the bill for a high-end wine bar on S 1st. An overly expensive restaurant/wine bar/store(?) was not what I was expecting from the cute dog logo and prior publicity I had seen from this place. (And by the way, if you want to drink a bottle from their store , which is literally inside the restaurant, expect a $25 corking fee per bottle!) In summary: Fun concept, disappointing execution, and exorbitant prices
