Had my first Altstadt beer today! This is a great place to meet friends before the Texas Longhorn Football games at DKR. They host the Texas Sports Unfiltered pregame Radio / Youtube shows. Bucky Godbolt & Brad BK Kellner break down the game on air while giving out SWAG and doing drawings for good prizes. Fun stuff!

The food was acceptable, but the service left much to be desired. Our server was largely inattentive and visibly disengaged, particularly after I opted for a 15% tip instead of the pre-set 20% minimum on the POS machine. Considering the poor service, I felt 15% was more than generous. The entire experience, however, bordered on the absurd.

Amazing Historic German Beer Garden! The food here is of the highest quality, we had the sausage Flight and all the sausages were packed with flavour, and the accompanying dips and sides were all top notch. The sauerkraut Balls, and the potato pancakes with mushroom gravy were delicious as well! Reasonable prices, and a great vibe in general, highly recommended!

Well...My food was set down at the wrong table for 20 mins., and I had been waiting for it They did, however, apologize and did a redo with a fresh order and got it out quickly. The food was OK. I honestly cant remember what I had...and I didnt drink alcohol. Benefit of a doubt: Perhaps they were short staffed. We were there for a party. It was a small inside space and extremely LOUD. Oh well. It IS a historic place. Thats something.

Really solid location that captures the feeling of being in Germany. The brats were full of flavor, they had a wide selection of German beers, and the Pretzel was one of the best Ive had (and Im not big on Pretzels). We were a bit nervous coming the summer but they have WAY more seating inside than the pictures let on. Be warned though, if theres a concert happening at Moody, they will have a limited menu. Try to check that beforehand!

The flavor is pretty good and the service is quick at lunch. My small bits of not great preventing me from 5 stars are: Food - Jagerschnitzel-The cutlet is very thin and a little aged-tasting. Not good for a pork cutlet. Gravy is a little sparse. Flavor on the breading, crispiness, and gravy flavor is great, so a few tweaks and the whole thing would be great. Service - They take a while to notice you at the door, menus are not always given, and drink options are low if not a beer drinker. Otherwise, friendliness is high, and the order is always fast and hot, so again, small tweaks would make a huge difference. Atmosphere - its DARK and a bit dingy. Kind of authentic for a German place, TBH, but I want to SEE my food. Again, otherwise, okay. None of these comments would prevent me from going back. I definitely will. But hopefully, it will just get better and I can come back and revise.

We stopped here to eat before a concert at the Moody Center. We looked up the menu online and had an idea about what we wanted to eat. However, they were not offering their full menu on a Saturday evening. They had a limited item menu. We had the Schnitzel sandwich with potato chips and a couple of beverages. The food wasnt that great. The sandwich was bland even with the addition of lemon and red cabbage. We ended up discarding most because it. This is a good place for beer and pretzels, but I would not go for anything other than that. The staff was nice, so that was a good thing.

I didn t have any prior experience with German food so I don t have a baseline, but this was amazing. Our server suggested a light German beer since we were first timers (Reissdorf Kolsch) and it was just what we like. His service was flawless. The wurst are the best sausages I ve ever had anywhere by far. Not overly salty and varied flavors. The beef tips were tender and the spatzle was buttery and rich. And that gravy was spot on; again, not overly salty. The outdoor seating is perfect for hot weather. Plenty of shade and mist fans throughout keep you cool without drenching you. Highly recommended.

Random but: The smell of this building is amazing, its like the wood absorbed all the wonderful cooking aromas from the years its been open and they just live there. The food is delicious, and its a great chill date spot for my husband and I. We often get a pretzel to share (theyre huge), a drink (because who eats German food sober?), and an entree - I have yet to order a dish that wasnt great. The applesauce is a great side/dessert. Service is always kind and quick.

Ordered the pork schnitzel sando with rotkohl which I threw up before leaving the restaurant in the bathroom. Was told the bartenders were awesome by my friend group, but that was the only interaction aside from placing food orders. Beer garden looked alright its just so hot now, but nothing seemed to stand out or made me want to come back, unfortunately.

Was disappointed that there was a limited menu due to events. I was looking forward to having the schnitzel. Also, I may have just missed it, but I didnt see a sign saying to eat in the back until my group was walking towards the back/outside. We had been sitting for probably 10ish minutes waiting for someone before I got up to ask one of the employees, and they informed me of the setup. I will say that the gentleman wearing glasses/a bandana was very kind. He helped us carry our stroller down the steps to the eating area. So overall, pet and family friendly atmosphere.

The food menu choices were minimal. The food was ok but it was very greasy. You can only order food outside and not in the bar area. I expected more draft beer choices than what you can find in a regular bar. There was no brandy and the bourbon choices were limited as well. The outside patio is nice to sit and hang out but the food and alcohol selection would be improved. The staff was friendly.

One of my favorite alumni spots adjacent to campus. Perfect for game day. The kids love the pretzels and so do us adults. The sausage is to die for... Kind of an odd thing to say but its true On the inside I love the old building feel in the classic woodwork and bar. The courtyard is also perfect for game day or if youre going to a concert in the area its a perfect spot to stop in and grab a beer before you head to the concert for the game.

We stopped in on the same day of the 3M Half Marathon and this place was HOPPING! Immediately upon entering you re hit with the delicious smell of smoked meat and general welcoming German pub vibes. It s dark and still decorated for Christmas which is charming. We were sat down quickly and brought waters, then ordered some tea. The tea came in practically gallon containers (ok, maybe liter) and was fantastic. My Arnold Palmer even came with a spoon to mix it up - I think they make their own lemonade here! The pretzel was crunchy on the outside and melty soft and warm on the inside. Almost like a donut but savory. OMG it was so good. It came with garlic butter and mustard along with some cheese. We also got some red cabbage rotkohl - so yummy. Our turkey sandwich and weisswurst did not disappoint. I sent the menu to my German friend and she was like wow, that place looks legit! And as far as I can tell, it is! We are visiting Austin to celebrate my mom s birthday and I slipped away to ask our waitress and another staff member if they did anything for birthdays. They came out in a hot dog suit to sing my mom happy birthday and we both loved it. I so appreciate the kind welcoming service we got at Scholz. We loved our visit!

After living in Austin for 30 years, I finally decided to check out Scholz Garden for lunch. What a nice surprise! We ordered a giant pretzel that came with Dijon mustard, beer cheese and garlic butter to dip it in. Yum! For the meal, I had the special of the day, which was a beef goulash and my husband got beef tips. Both meals were also really good. The service was great, parking was easy, and the meal was reasonably priced. Well be back!

The area used to be a large German community. That is a picture of a bridge from way back constructed for a festival.
