May I say my favorite restaurant in Austin?

Canje is without a doubt the most over-rated restaurant in Austin. My experience would put it somewhere between a Red Robin and a Chilis, but with uncomfortably loud music. Our experience was they could not get plates on the table correctly, could not get drinks out before appetizers, and the entrees could best be described as well-spiced brown goo with stewed meat. Additionally the music was incredibly loud (my apple watch was telling me I shouldnt spend too much time there as it was dangerous for my hearing.) Not sure why they didnt turn it down. I had my birthday dinner there back in July, at 7:30 on a Wednesday, and they couldnt successfully handle 2 people well-reserved in advance. I regret choosing to go here for something like that. Its very clear this restaurant has a publicist/marketer in place of a manager who can run a dinner service successfully.

As someone who s lived in this town for 18 years, and seen a lot of restaurants/bars come in/out of this space - Canje is my ABSOLUTE favorite restaurant in town. I have been here over a dozen times and have had everything on the menu at least once. The flavors are incredible and are such a wild combination to what one usually encounters in Austin s dining scene. The staff are always super accommodating with my food allergies and the drinks marry the dishes well! While I am super stoked on Canje receiving props from the NYT, it also put them in the crosshairs of wannabe foodie critics that use Google reviews as a means for an ego boost. This is easily seen in the reviews where they take off a star bc ONE dish doesn t tickle their fancy . That doesn t knock a restaurant from a 5 to a 4, come on - get your head out of your a**. Hate on the haters, Canje is the best! I take everyone that comes to visit here. I took my brother and his wife here, who were visiting from Hong Kong, and they said, yes! Finally interesting and delicious food, after spending a week in the food hellscape that is Lake Conroe. In short: Canje is amazing! You won t be disappointed

Compelled to write this review because this place was excellent. Their food is impeccable - we loved every single dish we ordered. The jerk chicken, chocolate flan and the roti were standouts. We loved their cocktails as well. We were celebrating a friend s birthday and the staff was incredible nice - all in all, one of the best meals we have had ever!

This place has been hyped up for a while now, and I finally had the chance to come in and try the food. My expectations were too high since so many people have raved about this spot, but I felt underwhelmed by the food. We ordered the following for a group of 4: Ceviche: 5/5 Really enjoyed this ceviche with the taro chips! Loved the blend of flavors. Accra de Morue: 2/5 Very mushy, not much flavor. Grilled Prawns: 5/5 Cooked perfectly, really liked the char on the prawns. Guyanese Style Roti: 4/5 Great flavor, but a bit greasy Fried Sweet Plantains: 4/5 A bit dry, but I enjoyed the flavor West Indian Curry: 1/5 Probably the worst dish we tried. The curry was very thin and watery and didnt have much flavor at all. It needed much more seasoning. The wagyu beef that was supposed to be in it, was just dry and almost grainy. Not wagyu beef standards. Haitian Griot: 5/5 This was my favorite main. The pork was juicy and well seasoned. I really liked the crispy pig ears too! Jerk Chicken: 2/5 This was meh. The server warned us saying the chicken would be very spicy, but there was little to no spice. It just tasted very salty.

Food was so good! Order family style and taste all the flavors. My favorite, by far, was the wild boar pepperpot! Words cant describe how good it was. A little pricey but great place to celebrate special occasions or take an out-of-towner to dinner. Seating is tight, we were seated in the back by patio access. People going in and out and bumping chairs. (Taste of food over-rode the table location) Suggest making reservations if you want to dine later or on weekend. Parking: Easy access plenty of spots.

This was a fantastic find for 2 Austin tourists in search of a change of scenery from tacos & BBQ. We ordered 2 items from each section of the menu, which was far too much food but a great way to try more. Our server was very helpful, guiding us through the pan-Caribbean menu. We enjoyed every dish but found the fruit, roti, and curry dishes to be the ones we enjoyed most. Also, dont sleep on the cocktails. My Lime Light was yummy!

I arrived at Canje for my 32nd birthday dinner and I was greeted with grace by the host/hostess. Along with exceptional hospitality & a happy birthday! . I was quickly seated and met Amber I believe her name was. Informed that i was Guyanese and also a Queens, Ny native. She still did her best describing the menu and dishing out the food. Her service was above and beyond. I ordered the famous dish of Guyana my favorite as well pepper pot along with the roti, that was delicious. Though not fully traditional but garnished with an amazing twist. This visit was not a miss and is now amongst my favorite place to visit when I m home away from home and family. The appetizers were also super delicious. The oxtail empanadas/beef patties, were delicious. I would go there just for those alone to be honest. While devouring those I waited for another one of my favorites bun and cheese. Not the traditional but catered with a twist this was also delicious and another hit. I left full delighted and impressed. Far from upset I m waiting for my next visit. There is so much more to say but if your reading this and looking for your reason to go let this be it. Go enjoy the taste of one Of the greatest countries of South America and the carribean. Sweet Sweet Gt as we say !

I was attending a show down the street and decided randomly to give Canje a try. Boy was that a great decision!!! I had the wild boar pepper pot, and I loved hearing the story of where the boar is acquired locally and how the holiday specialty spices are imported thanks to the chefs family in Guayana! I also got some roti to sop up every drop of the delicious sauce. The plantain rice krispie treat was beyond any expectation....a combination of familiar flavors (plantains & pepitas) combined in new ways with new flavors (benne seed ice cream) to make an unforgettable solo dining experience. The staff was so welcoming, attentive and offered wonderful menu suggestions. Bravo!

My husband and I were looking forward to our reservation at Canje on Friday Sept 30th. Our daughter had recently dined there and raved about the authenticity of the Carribean food, drinks and service. Unfortunately, on the day of our reservation our dog became very ill and we received devastating news from her veterinarian. We called Canje and let them know we had to cancel. That evening Canjes manager David surprised us and delivered to our house, which is 30 min drive from the restaurant, during peak busy hours, on a Friday night, a full dinner to us! We had tears. We could not believe the goodness in the heart of the staff of this restaurant. They went above and beyond! We have traveled to many of the Caribbean islands and continue to go at least once a year to our favorite islands in the BVI. Canjes vegetable curry was perfectly spiced. The flavor and spice of the coconut curry broth did not overtake the dish, but complemented the fresh vegetables with delicate flavor. The Tres Leches cake with roasted white chocolate and coconut was the perfect desert. We cant wait to dine at Canje in person. Many thanks to David and the Staff at Canje!!

Afro-Carribbean fusion restaurant in Austin! From the moment we pulled in we knew we were in for a treat! Beautiful west African art on the wall and Afro beats playing in the background. Favorites include the first dance cocktail, and the beef patties! The habanero sauce served with the pattties was soo good. Y all should bottle that and sell it! I could have ate the patties as a meal alone. That s how good they are! Main course was jerk chicken and it was good, balanced flavor, and very fresh! I personally prefer my jerk chicken to have a bit more spice/seasoning. Roti was traditional roti similar to the ones I ve had growing up. Pepper rice was not spicy but tasted similar to the zatarans Spanish rice mix. Dessert we had the Rice Krispies and it was a pleasant mix of rice crispies, condensed milk, and plantain ice cream. This dessert was a playful ode to the American classic of rice crispy treats!

Additionally, one of our friends has a relatively serious gluten intolerance and while most restaurants are unable to reasonably adapt without a significant dip in quality, Canjes menu is conveniently 75%(ish) gluten free already. We were able to order everything we wanted without modifications which was a huge breath of fresh air. We had a wonderful time and can t wait to return! My friend has been raving about this place and I was sooooo excited to try it... and starving! Lol The atmosphere is great. Very moody lighting, loud with energy and laughter. We loved. Our server started out very nice and helpful, and then something took a turn. We arent sure what but he started avoiding us, ignoring my calling out to him... just kind of abandoned us once we placed our order. It was weird! However, the food was magic! The Oxtail Beef patties were divine. If I could place a delivery order to Dallas right now, I would! Just delicious. Next we tried the Accra de Morue and were surprised at how perfectly balanced the flavors were. I felt like a vacuum the way I hoovered up these appetizers. Next was the Wild Boat Pepperpot, Trinidadian Pepper Rice, plantains & roti. Yall it was all phenomenal. The roti was so freaking good that we ordered a second... then a third! We also ordered the Jerk chicken, which we later learned takes a little than the other dishes. As someone who is proactive, the waiter could have prefaced that when we ordered instead of us having to find him to ask where our chicken was. The only thing we didnt like was the dessert. We ordered the Plantain Rice Crispy Treat, which turned out to be a bowl of deconstructed, sticky cereal. At one point, my friend had a piece stuff the wrong way in her throat. Once we finally got a hold of our server, we asked for maybe a piece of bread to help it get it unstuck. He was so strange about it. He went and had a stressful convo with the manager (I could see the entire interaction from the table). Manager comes over and asks whats going on. Its like the server thought we were complaining or trying to get over. The manager brought over an order of roti, she ate a few pieces and it helped. He kept mentioning how we didnt need to pay for the roti. It just felt a little weird. But it wont stop us from coming back! I was so freaking fat and happy when we left. Other than that server, 10 outta 10!

We ordered the oxtail beef patties as our appetizer and they came out hot. The crust was flaky and the oxtail was very tender. The sauce that it came with was *chef s kiss.* For our entrees we ordered the curry beef and the jerk chicken along with the pepper rice, trini corn, and roti. Everything was so good. I wanted to keep eating but also wanted to save room for dessert. We ordered the plantain rice krispy treat. This one of the best and unique desserts I ve ever tried. Had made reservations for our team meeting, and we were seated within 5 minutes of our reservation time after showing up 10 minutes early! Our super energetic and excitable hostess suggested a few spirit forward cocktails, as we went ahead placing our order which included a few very delicious items. One cannot go wrong ordering the Smoked Avocado Escabeche ($13) - an absolute new dish to me, but was the best on the table. As a vegetarian this is best appetizer on their menu. The table did enjoy the Ceviche ($18) as well. While the menu for vegetarians is limited in option, the Sweet Potato ($20) is a good dish to order. It was the most enjoyable when it was warm, but as the potatoes started to cool down, the dish became slightly dry. No specific flavor punch to the dish, but enjoyable dish. Our table thoroughly enjoyed the Jerk Chicken ($34) and the Curry Wagyu Beef. We had also ordered a Guyanese Style Roti ($6) which took a long time to arrive; and the Cucumber Mango Chow was missing acidity and spice. Service was good, and noise levels were on the average end. Will definitely recommend this place to friends and family!

I was pleasantly surprised to discover this Guyanese-inspired Caribbean restaurant in ATX. As someone from Guyana who grew up in Brooklyn, I ve had my share of Guyanese food, and this restaurant did not disappoint. The food was delicious, offering an elevated take on traditional Guyanese cuisine. The oxtail empanada was my favorite dish. It was cooked to perfection, with a soft and pillowy empanada. It was a treat to have pepperpot outside of Christmas morning when we traditionally eat it. While it wasn t quite as good as my grandmother s, it was a close second. The curry and roti were also delicious. I particularly enjoyed the plantain chips and the accompanying sauces. My son, who is very picky, loved the empanadas and the plantain chips. He even ate his curry and roti, which is high praise coming from him. The service and atmosphere were equally impressive. The staff were super friendly and attentive. The place is beautifully decorated, and the music added to the great ambiance. My only suggestion would be to add pine tart to the dessert menu. Overall, this restaurant is a fantastic addition to the Austin food scene, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for authentic and elevated Guyanese or Caribbean cuisine.

Top-notch food. Everything was great. Even with a reservation for 2, it took about 15 or 20 minutes waiting in a standing-only waiting area to be sat. Then we walked by several empty 2-tops on the way to our table (reserved for someone with a higher tier of reservation than our basic tier reservation, apparently.) The noise was such that every sentence by the staff and my partner had to be shouted/repeated. The staff seemed to be patient or used to having to shout or lean in close to say or hear anything, and they were all very nice and helpful. They have some issues with the space, but the food is truly great. Dietary restrictions: The server made a marked-up menu after consulting the kitchen on a plantain allergy.

We dined here this past Saturday evening. Reservations are necessary as the restaurant is fairly busy. We were seated quickly and wait staff was prompt. The items that we tried were the following appetizers smoked avocado escabeche. This had a good flavor, Pomegranate gave it a nice tang, which complimented the avocado well. We also had the albacore ceviche. The mango was a bit tangy, but fish was fresh. We had the following main courses Jerk chicken, which was super spicy it was accompanied with a wild garlic chutney and a cucumber mango salad, neither helped with spices for myself it was really spicy. We also had Tile fish, which was a nice white fish accompanied by vegetables and tangy sauce. We ordered the Guyanese style roti, which was nice and fluffy. We ended with Tres Leches, and it was not what we expected. The jam in the tres leches made it very sweet. I couldnt taste the white chocolate or coconut milk. There is a wine and cocktail menu, I tried the Jerk Snz, which was very smooth. Overall, the food was too tangy, the tile fish, and the appetizers all had a flavor mix that was too tangy. Maybe next time, I may try a different mix of appetizers and main course dishes. The atmosphere and service were great. Music was loud but tasteful its sixth street, so the vibe was matching:). Parking: Valet parking available and tips are all that I was charged.

Update: Came back one year later, and still just as incredible! Service, vibes, atmosphere all stellar. Every bite of food was complex and interesting with layers of flavor and texture: ceviche, beef patty (like an empanada but with the flakiest butteriest melt in your mouth crust), shirimp, wagyu curry, jerk chicken, roti plus the krispy treat dessert). 5 stars. --- Incredible dining experience at Canje last night Our server, Darrel (I think) was INCREDIBLE. So friendly, great energy and really knew the menu - he helped guide us and answered all my questions on the various dishes. In fact, the service the entire night was attentive and spot on. My water was always filled, they switched out our plates seamlessly, etc. So impressive. All of this and they still maintained a really chill and comfortable vibe. Cool music, hip atmosphere. And the FOOD and DRINKS! My husband had to Sol Calypso and I had the Pina Colada with a spiced rum floater. WOW! To eat we did the ceviche, bacalaito, grouper, wagyu curry, roti and sweet fried plantains. Everything was so flavorful, complex and delicious. All in all, just a fantastic experience. THANK YOU!

I have heard so many great things about Canje from friends, so I had to try it out this past weekend. The occasion was I had some friends in town from Canada, and I thought it would be perfect to try this new Caribbean hot spot on Austins East Side. We had a reservation outdoor seating at 830pm on a Friday - the only tables available even weeks ahead were outdoors, but the patio is covered and was cool once the sun was down. Our server was super friendly with a positive vibe and cheered all of us up immediately. We ordered the ceviche - INCREDIBLE, with lovely citrus flavors and peanuts as a garnish with yuca chips Then had the wagyu beef curry and two roti - UNBELIEVABLE. but very spicy so beware. Finally, the 48 hour marinated jerk chicken. Chicken was perfectly moist and dry rub was tasty, but again has a strong spicy kick. I loved everything about my meal, including the leftovers the next day :-) Parking: about ten spots plus valet. also metered street parking

Listed in the NYT restaurants for Austin we wanted to give it a try. The indoor atmosphere was incredibly loud so we opted to sit outside. The service was friendly and engaging. The menu is tantalizing with a blend of Caribbean and African flavors. We had the avocado, grouper, pork chops, roti, and sweet plantains. the sweet plantains were the only thing that I really did not like. All other dishes were good.

One of the best Caribbean / Guyanese food in ATX. Top cocktails yet mediocre food. Love the albacore ceviche. The most anticipated wild boar pepper pot came burnt. Jerk chicken came in too dry and super spicy. The oxtail beef patties come as our favorite dish. The dipping sauce is so tropical and refreshing which perfectly balances the heavy flavors of the braised oxtail. Tres leche is worth a try but super sweet as you d expected. The ambience is cool and tropical. But the music is a bit too loud for people to have conversations.

Canje in Austin is an absolute culinary revelation! From the moment you step foot inside, youre transported on a tantalizing journey of flavor exploration. The Guyanese cuisine served here is nothing short of spectacular, earning its rightful place among the New York Times best restaurants. The tour guides are like culinary wizards, leading you through a gastronomic adventure unlike any other. Our family-style feast was a symphony of taste sensations, with each dish vying for the title of most incredible. But oh, the wild boar! It stole the show with its robust and savory allure. And lets not forget the drinks each one a masterpiece of balance and flavor. But the real star of the show? The plantain chips paired with the avocado-pomegranate wah gwaan. Pure bliss in every bite! Canje is not just a restaurant; its a culinary odyssey that will leave you craving more with every delicious mouthful. Vegetarian options: The kitchen is ready and willing to make jerk plantains. Parking: Right out in front

I definitely recommend: the ceviche and the pink pineapple for starters, and the wagyu beef curry with a side of roti for main. The jerk chicken is also delicious but will definitely make your lips burn and your nose run if you don t have a spice tolerance. The desserts are also so so yummy, my favs are the Tres leches and the Chocolate flan.

Canje is a culinary gem in Austin, offering an unparalleled dining experience. From the moment you step in, youre greeted by a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The Wild Boar pepperpot is an absolute delight, delivering flavors that will linger in your memory long after the meal is over. What truly sets Canje apart is its exceptional staff. Their friendliness and personal touch elevate the dining experience to new heights. The waitress went above and beyond, ensuring that our visit was nothing short of extraordinary. When she learned about our connection to Chef Harvards interview with Bon Appetit, the chef himself took the time to personally introduce us to each dish, adding a special touch to the evening. Despite the restaurant being at its busiest, the staff graciously extended an invitation for a kitchen tour and a meet-and-greet with the chef. This level of hospitality is truly commendable and speaks volumes about the dedication of the team at Canje. If youre looking for a dining experience that goes beyond exceptional food, look no further than Canje.

Around the board solid 4.1. Good food, however, only a few dishes really tickled the soul. That being said, it was much higher than average on the scale of good food here in Austin. We were very satisfied. Will be back for more! Great atmosphere (although I didn t enjoy the fact we made reservations weeks in advance and got sat in the dark cold corner of the bar area) My favorite dish was the grilled cabbage, the oxtail patties and the boar. Chicken was a little dry, but the spice was nice. My only suggestion would be to not skimp on the spice. All these menu items included spicy Chiles but you couldn t really taste them, which underwhelmed me. The fish fritters were delicious. Wish I tasted more soursop in the soursop cocktail, it tasted more like a margarita. Good stuff though, thanks for the food.

We came 4/6/24. Was served rare pork chop. The waiter said it was safe to eat but we lost our appetites and became anxious of getting food poisoning. It looks like there are other photos of the pork chop that have the same rareness, which makes me think that it is meant to be prepared undercooked. That is crazy! Pork is not safe undercooked. Wasted our money and the meal should have been comped. Fried plaintains were also not great super dry and not sweet. Finally got around to going to Canje after hearing about it for ages. Overall, good and service were great. Food isn t getting five stars because the price was a bit high compared to the taste - Recently moved from Houston near a local mom and pop carribean restaurant that was probably just as tasty and much more affordable. But, don t get me wrong we loved the food at Canje. Apps: Shrimp & Octopus - 4.5/5 would get this again. Sweet and Smokey flavors and super refreshing. Oxtail Beef Patties - 4/5 Honestly, these were great and the sauce was delicious. You just don t get much for these kinda just being fancy empanadas. Entrees: Curry Wagyu - 3.5/5 Tasty flavors, but didn t stand out. Was more of a stew, texture a tad gooey, but the wagyu pieces were bomb af. Jerk Chicken - 5/5 Definitely the night s highlight. LOVED IT. Cooked to perfection, flavored impeccably, and probably the best jerk chicken I ve ever had anywhere. Get this one. Sides: Roti - 5/5 This flatbread was simple and amazing. Don t miss it. Fried Sweet Plantains - 3/5 Maybe I lived in Miami too long and had too many amazing sweet plantains, but these just weren t anything special but they were still solid? Atmosphere: The inside is very cute, but the lighting is extremely dim and the music is loud like a night club. Maybe it s a fun vibe if you re drinking but it was hard for me and my partner to hear eachother without almost yelling. Overall: I d come back, but not right away. Still, that Jerk chicken is one of my fave dishes in recent memory, but Austin has too many new spots that I d run back too first that have more bang for the buck.

Excellent dining experience. The food s great across the board with the pepperpot and jerk chicken as standouts. The pepperpot s got a rich spiced sweetness full of dried orange peels. Our service was also on the terrible side. Could not track anyone down the second half of our meal to help us. When I sat down, we had our drink orders taken then our server came by to ask about allergies. This is the very first time this has happened and I am very grateful to their dedication to an amazing experience. I ordered the Albacore Ceviche, Tilefish, Trinidadian Pepper Rice, and the Fried Sweet Plantain. My first time having ceviche and I could actually eat this once a week. It did not have to go so hard but it did. It was delicious. I cleaned that plate up. Next, the Tilefish was amazing. The sauce at the bottom of the place was delectable and the fish was soft and well seasoned. The plátano was okay. I ve had juicier platano but this was fine. And the rice was so good! The Curry Wagyu Beef with Trinidadian Pepper Rice and Wild Boar Pepperpot with Roti brought back cherished childhood flavors. The Black cake was also a standout, reminiscent of Christmas. The plan to bring my family next time speaks to the restaurants broad appeal. Commendations to Canje for both outstanding food and impeccable service!

Service was good, friendly, and timely. Had plenty of gluten free options! Only dish I didnt like was the fried plantains which were too tough. Cocktails were kind of average. Sat on patio and enjoyed it but felt it would have been way too loud inside. There was parking in the lot which was convenient. Dietary restrictions: Had gluten free and vegetarian options

Two words: Delicious and Flavorful! I had heard about the chef at a foodie event in L.A., so I immediately booked a resy when I landed. They only had really late times but the girl who text me to confirm offered to get us an earlier seating-impressive! We had a brief wait upon arrival despite having a resy but the staff was friendly, gave great explanations about the menu, food came out hot and FAST. We started with pepper rice, plantains & salt fish accra - which was SO good that we ordered more! Be hungry if youre gonna order the popular Jerk Chicken or you can share it as its a 1/2 chicken (juicy, obviously marinated, not as hot as my Jamaican palate is used to but spiced well). The lighting above the tables is very dark even with the candles but the decor overall is line with the cultural theme. Love the clever titles on the menu. There is onsite free parking, but its not a large venue so Id recommend making a resy. Dont miss this gem when youre in Austin.

We stopped in Saturday night (1/27/24) & were lucky to grab a spot at the bar (two top). McKinney was our bartender/server and he gets rave reviews for service. The food was super, we had the roti (bread), I had the sweet potato main dish & my husband had the ceviche, and also the octopus/shrimp dish. We split the mango tres leches dessert. All were super interesting flavor profiles in a great way & my husband said its the best ceviche hes had in years & the octopus/shrimp dish was off the charts. Im not a seafood person, but I found plenty to eat and McKinney did a great job guiding us along. I told him, the great thing is that they dont shove too many people at the bar, he was able to chat, connect, give us recommendations, answer questions, and he did all of that perfectly. Really made a great experience happen. Food is one thing, but food + excellent service is really the game changer. Canje gets two thumbs up.

Jerk chicken, ceviche, and the game patties were incredible. I cant wait to come back and try the other dishes. We sat on the patio, which im glad we did ( because the inside vibe was quite annoying with guests moving around frantically and didnt care for the loud music and group setting. )

Yall I honestly cant believe I havent reviewed this place yet I must have taken literally all my friends that visit Austin here. Every meal is consistently amazing in service, food and cocktails And Ive patronized multiple times over the course of a year and half BEFORE they were on the New York Times list. And no, none of it was hyperbole. They deliver every time! Must order: * The Ceviche (my absolute fave in ATX) * Curry Wagyu with a side of roti (the servers will steer you in the right direction, they are fantastic) * Jerk Chicken (best anywhere really) * Any and all Mezcal cocktails, but the Hibiscus Negroni is a favorite
