I have been an avid and loyal patron of Hickory Street Cafe since its earliest existence. Their signature items are chicken salad and zucchini bread. Sadly, both of these have changed in recent months under the new ownership. Those who worked hard to make Hickory Street Cafe an Abilene landmark would be saddened to hear that their recipes were no longer the ones we have all enjoyed for so many years.

First time here, it will not be my last! Came after lunch rush and it was peaceful, but I m sure even with a ton of people the food/service no doubt would still be just as excellent! Words couldn t express the attentiveness our waitress provided! (Unfortunately I cannot remember her name! Sorry!) and the front desk lady gave the most warm welcoming and cheery feel! The atmosphere was bright and airy. The decor was spectacular and gave you a farm/cottage house feel. We had the Philly cheesesteak, chicken salad sandwich, and the side fixings of pasta salad, broccoli cheddar soup, potato sticks, zucchini bread (absolutely delicious!!) , paired with their sweet iced peach tea! Please, if it s a lovely day or even a rainy one stop in and have brunch or lunch! You will not be disappointed!

4/2023 I went to a lot of trouble to be able to come to hickory street today for the first time during their very short hours in probably a year. My experience began with multiple phone calls that went unanswered over half an hour before I stopped trying. I needed to call in a to go. When I arrived at the restaurant there was a sign on the pick up window stating they werent doing to gos that day. Had they answered the phone or added a recording I wouldve known. The hostess reiterated this when I told her I couldnt stay for the long wait because I had my dog in the car and it was hot. I take my support dog most places with me. My husband, who was working miles away, really wanted chicken salad from their restaurant however so I made the long trip to my house and back for a table. Once I was sat I ask if I could take some extra chicken salad with me. My waitress said the kitchen would not do even this because they were short. I didnt understand that until I heard the very loud, snarky protests from the nearby kitchen in response to a different waitress asking for a to go salad for a table. Ive already done x number of to go items so whats another! Whats it matter anymore. I felt bad for that waitress. Then later in response to a customer complaint See thats why I try to ignore people!. Im sorry but I dont understand the logic behind such a rigid no to go policy coupled with no phone answering or a recording to inform the customer. It is flat inconsiderate towards patrons. How does it change the time invested in an order anyway? It probably doesnt take as much time to wait a table as it does to bag an order. Why cant an exception be made when someone has an animal in the car and had no means of knowing about your policy in advance? The food was ok and to me the place is way over hyped.. I wont be returning or recommending.

You need to hire someone that knows how to cook. This used to be a go to lunch spot. But now it s like they know the recipes but don t know how to cook. Crust was raw. Soup was water, corn starch and three pieces of broccoli. One of which was inedible. Even the ranch dressing tasted watered down. So disappointing when a business sells to new owners.

Hickory Street Cafe is a must if you re in Abilene, Texas. This cafe that serves up some of the best homemade zucchini bread that you ll ever come across and can be bought in loaves to go, is only open during the week for lunch. It also serves salads, sandwiches, soups and other fresh baked goods. The children s menu includes Mac and cheese, which was a hit with some of our group. The chicken salad and quiche were also made with fresh ingredients. I had a sandwich with a side of the cream of potato soup and fresh fruit cup topped with yogurt delightful combination. And what s better than a good meal served with a raspberry ice tea with free refills. It was a charming atmosphere in a historic home with very tasty food. In fact we bought a few loaves of the zucchini bread to take back home because it was that good. Tip - make reservations to make sure there s a table available. Highly recommend!

I have eaten at Hickory Street for almost 20 years. Each time I go or take friends with me I love the food...but something has changed in the last many months. The chicken salad does not taste as good and something is missing from it. They are understaffed and the last time I went it took the waiter 15 minutes to make it to our table for the drink order. I want this place to do well but they need to bring back the original chicken salad!

This place isn t worth it: one, they are out of everything. Tried the BLT, no bacon, Tried the taco salad, they don t make that anymore. I ordered from the takeout window, the wait was a good 30 mins with no food. I requested to wait inside and maybe eat inside. They declined. They said if you paid outside, you cannot eat inside their establishment. Made me wonder if prices are cheaper at the window. But they are not. They are very disorganised, you have to pull someone and ask for directions. If this is what Abilene considers top of the line, they can keep it. My rating is purely on Service. Then the sandwich came after 45 minutes. Total waste of my time. The only thing that can make sense of this bad service is if the business is under new ownership.

This is such a great lunch spot! Went with a friend, and we both ordered the same thing. The Salad Sampler with Maple Vinaigrette. It came with their very popular chicken salad, a pasta salad with chicken, and a garden salad. It also came with 2 pieces of zucchini bread. I liked the pasta salad with chicken. It was tangy, and the chicken had good texture but not really any flavor. The chicken salad was a flavor bomb in your mouth! Wow! Awesome flavor. BUT I got WAY too many fatty, rubbery, grisly pieces to be able to thoroughly enjoy it, which was a bummer. But I did eat the pieces that I could tell would have a good texture. I ordered their vegetable of the day quiche, to go, which was a broccoli mushroom. It was delicious! I also ordered a bowl of broccoli parmesan soup to go and did not like the texture of this soup at all, but the flavor was very good! It was goopy. Reminded me of paper mache glue. The raspberry iced tea was very good. Its not too sweet, very refreshing. I will go back because its a nice spot for lunch. But I will definitely try other things or maybe stick with the quiche!

March 2023 Welp, we called to see what the wait was and we thought we were in luck because there were open tables, but it took 15 minutes to get our order. We waited 50 min (no word on progress or check in from waitress) before we had to just leave. Upon exit we were told the food hadnt even been started yet. Their peach tea and zucchini are good so 2 stars. July 2022 BLT - Expected the bacon to be thick... couldnt taste the peach preserve but it was there. The potato soup was good.

Adorable, well appointed Victorian house with several dining areas inside and out. The staff is gracious and attentive, the food is delicious and the zucchini bread is a good finish although the desserts looked amazing also. There is also a cute gift shop at the entrance where I bought several gift items and a cook book for my daughter. The coffee and tea were both brewed perfectly. The quiche and salad were so delish! The Hickory Street Cafe is a great spot for a bridal luncheon or really any celebration.

Love this cafe! Their chicken salad croissant sandwich is delicious and their peach tea is yummy and generous portion! We love getting a loaf of zucchini bread to go as well. Excellent setup for COVID with outdoor pickup window and some outdoor tables! (Indoor dining also offered and staff seem to diligently wear their masks)

Service was good, look and atmosphere were also good. The food was a little lacking, minimal menu which was fine, but mediocre and poorly executed . I get it, its Abilene, and the food scene is really lacking. From the can potato sticks, over boiled egg(greenish center), famous zucchini bread that tasted more like banana bread, boring salads etc. If youre looking for an average lunch, this is your spot!

Service was swift and friendly. The traditional homey atmosphere is the perfect representation of the southern hospitality displayed by staff. The food was delicious! Personally, I had the Wisconsin Cheese (Soup of the Day) and a Roast Beef Sandwich with Green Chili. My thirst was continually quenched, thanks to our attentive server, Sandra. The Chocolate Decadence dessert is so rich, youll want to vanilla ice cream as an add-on. I highly recommend stopping by Hickory Street Cafe for a scrumptious experience.

Really good light lunch. Their banana bread is really good. Moist, dark, uummm, and really good with cream cheese. The most popular thing is the chicken salad but today I had a salad, cup of broccoli soup, and broccoli quiche. The only thing I can think of to say negative is the tables are a little close. Obviously not a big deal. It sits on a nice old house they remodeled and decorated. Really great staff that will do anything for you.
