Think Schlotskys. Their original sandwich is very similar. The bread seems to be the biggest difference. Missing the same crutch, but it is still very good.

Schmaltzs has delicious sandwiches that are not too filling and come on warm, crunchy buns. We enjoyed both the turkey and the cheese sandwich. Despite a lunchtime line the orders moved fairly quickly and there always seemed to be a table open. The shop is in the middle of downtown and Im ready walking distance of desert or coffee afterwards.

I have never had a sandwich that was piled up with so much lettuce. They try to make the sandwiches look large with lettuce. When I opened the sandwich it had two thin slices of deli meal looked like Budds package meat from Kroger. If you want a deli sandwich that s worth a trip to Houston eat at Tonys Italian delicatessen the sandwiches there is life changing.

Nom nom nom nom was all I could think while I gobbled the Pastrami on a lightly crispy sesame seed bun. If they had a never ending sandwich that would be the end of me. Thankfully, it does not because I truly wouldnt want to gain unlimited weight. Just the 1 - 2 lbs will do but the heel kick of flavor made me smile with yum. Keep rocking those delicious smamiches.

I have been going to this sandwich shop since I was in a kid in the 80s. That bread was to die for!!! I haven t been in more than a year due to moving out of state. Came back so excited for that warm crunchy bread! Only to have it be mildly warm and only bit of crunch I got was around the edges. So disappointing!!! I had to wait 20+ minutes which I didn t mind until I got that sad sandwich.

The smell of fresh bread lets you know your appetite is in good hands here. Pride in their product shows from start to finish. If you have any questions, the helpful counter people cheerfully answer them and make spot on recommendations. You cant go wrong with their signature sandwich and a bag of chips or slaw, if you prefer. They do a booming take away business, and its interesting to watch all the people come and go. Be a little patient; your freshly make sandwich will come and it will be worth the wait. All the locals go here.

This has always been my go-to sandwich in Waco! Since l live near Valley Mills Dr. I choose that location, but if l had a mtg. or appointment downtown, l eat there or take out. I have eaten other local sandwiches if they were provided at the mtg, but IMO they just do not compare. Vegetarian options: Since the sandwiches are made as you order, just ask for vegetarian options. Parking: Downtown location caters to people who work downtown so customers usually walk in. There is a parking lot in front of the North Valley Mills store, shared by other shops. It may get crowded depending on when, but you can still find a spot. Kid-friendliness: Families eat there all the time. Wheelchair accessibility: Double door entrance/exit, only one level.

This is such a cool, friendly sandwich place - just a couple of blocks from the Dr Pepper Museum. The perfect place for a filling lunch after visiting the museum. Their namesake sandwich - the Schmaltz sandwich - sounds absolutely delicious but I didn t try it (not a ham eater). Instead I had their veggie sandwich on the jalapeño cheese bread. Really good! Others on my table had the chef s salad and other sandwiches - all were delicious And the folks behind the counter are friendly and patient if you have any questions. Make this a must visit place on your next trip to Waco.

It was alright, I dont really agree with the rave reviews which convinced me to come here. The wait was absolutely ridiculous for a Thursday before the lunch rush and what I consider to be a basic order. It took about 45 mins. It was for 2 people, both ordering everything exactly as it was on the menu. Theres no sign when you walk in saying to order first or anything, kind of confusing. It was not that busy at this time. It wouldnt hurt to have someone walk around and clean the tables. I think the bread is gross. Im an average baker and Ive made better bread at home. Im from Austin and originally NYC/CT. This place would not survive whatsoever in any of those three places. People raving about this place have no standards of food. Barely any meat on the sandwich, both mine and person I went with. I was still hungry after eating what I ordered. Drinks are grossly over priced. The tea is absolutely terrible. It was barely sweet. The bathroom was disgusting. The toilet paper was on the floor. The holder was broken. Would not recommend.

These guys are the best! Theyve been around forever and the food is always A+ consistent. I always get the chef salad with double meat, but the regular chef salad still has plenty. They packed my to-go bowl so full that I turned it upside down on a plate to break it up. When I did this, it turned into this upside-down salad cake thing that I thought was hilarious! It was absolutely delicious as usual. I thought the employees would get a kick out of this so Im including a pic of the cake. P.S. Please refer to the actual pictures of their salads on other reviews before you judge their product. They are beautiful.

Service has really went down. I called in an order and waited at the phone order sign/register for 10 mins. Every worker just looked at me never acknowledging me as they walked by. I finally got the attention of one of the workers asking about my order. She stated oh yes, you have been here a while but shes doing everything. (Girl at the register who refused to look at me.) Just jump ahead in line. Those signs dont mean anything. The sandwiches are also not what they use to be. Very disappointed.

On September 1 of this year, I will have lived in Waco for 31 years. I ve been eating at Schmaltz ever since I arrived. I probably eat there 20 times a year. And I typically have the same thing. That great, big chef salad. 20 salads / year x 31 years = 620 salads. So You might say That Schmaltz is a considerable source of fiber in my diet. Thanks for keeping me regular, Nelson.

Google listed 4 pm as a closing time for this establishment, FYI: not correct it is 3. We walked in at 2:45 and the guy at the register seemed bothered, unfriendly and not welcoming at all and to add injury to insult he had big over the ear headphones on while I was giving him my order. It was my first time here so I had no idea what to get so I was looking at the menu which seemed to irritate him. I settled on the pastrami and water, my guest had the pastrami with cream of potato soup and a drink. Food is expensive, $28 was our bill. The pastrami was deli meat.. Save yourself some money and get yourself a pound of pastrami from your deli, some Swiss cheese, hamburger bun and toss it in the microwave youll have the same sandwich. We sat down and the guy from behind the counter with his headphones on began slamming chairs on top of each other when 2 people came in and he told them they were closed and that they closed at 3. This business needs to reflect the correct closing time on Google. 2 stars for the soup and for the polite lady that served us our food.

Idk if its homemade or not but my gosh it was good! The potato salad is also good and they make their own tea!! Its cheap and its located downtown so it doesnt get much better and they have their own small parking lot! Definitely go give this place a chance in your lunch rotation!!

Changing the review as Ive been a number of times since first. I think its the best Sandwhich shop in Waco, bar none. Cost, value, comfort, consistency, quality, all hit a 5 often. Busy during lunch hour, and not a ton of seating, but you can genuinely tell the staff care. Mcallisters holds no candle, is twice the cost. Jasons Deli is good but more money, and not as fresh. Magnolia anything (overpriced hugely) will never beat Schmaltzs as its now my wife and Is favorite.

The downtown location was clean and service was professional. I had the namesake sandwich and I was disappointed. Maybe it was just my sandwich, but the texture of the artisan bread was mealy...grainy, and I had to search for the meat--three anemic slices that got lost in the lettuce and olives that overflowed onto my plate. My wife enjoyed the pastrami but the amount of pastrami left her wanting more. I wanted to like this place but I wont be going back.

I have been here more than few times (both locations). There were maybe 5 people inside the restaurant, 2 of the folks that ordered after me got their food. Not to mention they kept stopping to make the call ahead orders. I had one small sandwich, their speciality, and it took 20 minutes. At one point, I could see it just sitting there. I asked about my order and they tried to give me a menu and told me to think about calling ahead next time. The food is usually okay. However, this time, the edges of the bread was inedible, hard as a rock. I had to pull my sandwich apart to eat it. I ve never had this bad of an experience here...

The tuna sandwich I had was great could of had more tuna in it less lettuce. My tina was just a spreed of Tuna for $8.50 plus tax I expected more tuna not all that lettuce, but the wheat bread was deliciously made. The parking is HORRIBLE. Little to NO parking at this place. Other than the parking & just getting a spreed of Tuna I would of gave them a 5 ..

Really wanted to try this spot based on the recommendations. Had the Wisconsin Cheese soup. Not good, nor was the bun. Tasted like warmed up cheese whiz with some chive in it. Very disappointed. Sorry but cannot recommend based on this.

Great sandwich. The bread is what makes it. The blue plate special is the way to go.

Always a great sandwich. The gentleman that brought it out was very friendly. The girl at the counter not so much. When I changed my chips, she scratched it out on the pad and huffed. She never greeted me or the other guests and seemed like it was a problem that she had to take my order.

We stopped for lunch in Waco and picked this great little sandwich shop. Quite pleased with our choice. Even though they were swamped with regular lunch crowd, they took time to explain options, make suggestions, etc. We got small sandwich and were completely satisfied. They make the bread in house, stuff with all the fixings and drizzle a little garlic butter. DELICIOUS!

I love Schmaltzs. The soups and the sandwiches are delicious. My personal favorite is the roast beef and cheddar.

THE ABSOLUTE BEST SANDWICH I ve had in a long time. The bread s taste and texture was as if it had just come out of the oven. The ingredients were fresh and tasted great. The veggies were crisp and cold while the bread was warm and melted on my mouth. It s a little place and was full but not too crowded. We waited maybe 10 minutes once we had placed the order.

Why would you go anywhere else for a sandwich? I need a location in Dallas.

Rude girl in the front she has piercings on her lips. First and last time I will ever go there. She needs a better attitude, I know we showed up 5 min before closing but another lady was so nice and said we could still order. Makes want to know why this people don t last that at their job.
