Very nicely renovated by the city. Its worth it to stop and read the history, and imagine the locals who were angry about having to pay a toll as they herded cattle across.

A neat old piece of Texas history that has recently been renovated by the city of Waco. It was a toll bridge for years when first built over a hundred years ago. A businessman then bought it and gave it to the city of Waco.

This bridge is beautifully restored, has great views of the river and surrounding grounds, and even offers a little bit of history if you take the time to read the placards. A beautiful addition to the Riverwalk. My little ones thought it was cool that it was just for walkers and that no cars could cross. Plenty of great photo ops with the Alico building in the background.

Beautiful scenery in the mornings , its quiet and refreshing not to many people. If you dont like too many people leave before it hits 11 am especially on the weekends. Its also a nice fishing spot. Always bring something to drink with you , youll get thirsty trust me. And its near food places so if youre hungry everything is nearby. Enjoy. P.s - just avoid certain spots if u dont like the smell of someone smoking theyll usually be in a area where it looks cleared and please for the love of God throw your trash in the trash cans.

Its 5 mins walk away from downtown and I have never have had trouble finding a parking. What a great piece of Texas history.

Completed in 1869 (Thats not a typo. 1869.), the bridge crosses the Brazos River in Waco. A major undertaking at the time due to Wacos remote location, it was considered to be a marvel of engineering. More than 3 million bricks make up the twin double towers. The cables that make up the bridge were brought in by wagons. The first suspension bridge in Texas, it was built to be wide enough for stagecoaches to pass each other. Or for cattle to cross on one side of the bridge while pedestrians crossed on the other. Yes, as the only bridge over the Brazos, Waco was a critical stop on the Chisholm Trail that was used to drive cattle to the railroads. There have been no tolls to cross the bridge since 1889. It has been open to vehicles, stagecoaches, and cattle until 1971 when it was reduced to pedestrians and bicycles only.
