This is our 2nd time making the 3 hour drive from San Antonio. The food here is so good! The chicken fried steak is definitely the best. We had Allie as our waitress and she was so awesome and super friendly! Definitely worth the drive. Cant wait to go back.

I cannot believe I am writing this review. I have been going to Goodsons for years and have always loved the food and experience but the last time we went was the last time we will go. We have seen roaches in the restaurant the last two times we have dined here (the last time it was ON OUR TABLE!). The first time we brushed it off as a fluke the second my kid jumped up because a roach was on his plate. The rolls that I ve loved so much came to the table cold. The waiter knew he was getting 20% because our party size so he couldn t have cared less. We actually got up and got the tea and water pitchers at one point because he hadn t been back. The chicken on my wife and mother in laws salad was ice cold, like it was made at an earlier time and stored in the fridge. We were all so disappointed with a place that has always been such a mainstay.

Has been and continues to be the best Chicken Fried Chicken in the state. The biscuits & gravy are awesome as well All the staff are awesome. Some of them have been there for 40+ years. We got the sampler appetizer with cheese sticks, fried okra, fried mushrooms, and fried onions(all served with ranch and warm marinara) each were hand battered and fried to perfection. We split the large chicken fried steak with black eyed peas and green beans as the two included sides with the entree and added mashed potatoes for a few dollars extra. The chicken fried steak was the size of a frisbee, hot, tender, with crispy breading that clung to the steak the cream gravy was steaming hot, wasn t overly salted and had just enough black peppercorns every side was good. The lemon meringue pie was outstanding and the coffee was good. Ask for Matt, he took very good care of us, and was a total pro from start to finish. We intend to take friends for our next visit and recommend this restaurant to all.

Its gotten pretty hit or miss. Last visit we waited half an hour for a table and kept getting passed over. So we left and went some where else. Food quality seems to be declining. If its fried it seems to be okay, Anything else has gotten mediocre at best. Kid-friendliness: Bring the kiddos. Theyll welcome them with a basket of yeast rolls.

Its been so many years since my husband and I dined here. We wanted to take our family of 12 from Sugar Land and Katy for real country cooking. We all fully enjoyed our experience. We typically like to eat near the bar . Lately, there are sooo many drain flies. We typically enjoy the atmosphere, but the last two times, we kept having to swat away tiny flies. Its really hard to eat a scrumptious meal when you have to fight these pests from your meal, drink, and even when youre speaking to each other. Everything else about the restaurant is fantastic, but we cant go back until this problem is solved.

The first time I went to this place for the chicken fried steak about 12 years ago, it was excellent. The gravy was not your typical white gravy and thats what made it so good. It was just a little different but i dont remember how. Second time i went about 6 years ago, I was disappointed because the gravy was watered down. This last time I went the chicken fried steak was great, but now they just use typical white gravy which was good, but not as good as it was 12 years ago. Sides and rolls are great as well.

Edit: Update - on 01/17/24 we gave them a second chance, and yep, it was just as bad and even worse.. there were living insects crawling in my wifes salad. See photo. We threw out all of our food, nobody ate anything, and went somewhere else to eat that evening. -- Original review: Lived in Tomball my entire life. Have visited Goodsons many times over the last couple decades. Last night might have been the last time we visit. Something has changed, maybe the management? Or the cooks.. one of the other. To start, we were sat at a tiny, wobbly table, as a party of 3 and barely had room for all 3 of our drinks plus an appetizer even though there were 2 open booths right next to us. 5 minutes later a couple of two were sat at the larger booth. Why not sit the larger party at the larger table? We ordered drinks, and it took nearly 10 minutes to get them. The host and wait staff did not bring us utensils, so we had to walk to the front to get our own. We ordered Fried Mushrooms to start, and the serving was about half what it usually was. Portion was definitely smaller. As far as flavor, these fried mushrooms were the best part of our visit. We ordered the Chicken Fried Steak, a Ribeye steak, and a mac n cheese burger. When our food was delivered, she sat down a bowl of Gravy and mentioned they were out of rolls. This would have been nice to know before ordering the meal as it is one reason I order the Chicken Fried Steak. The Chicken Fried Steak has been one of my favorites for many many years and is usually the only thing I ever order at Goodsons. The meal last night was bland, had no flavor, as if it was just meat and breading, and nothing else. No seasoning, no spice, nothing at all. Just plain. I usually use the rolls to make a chicken fried steak sandwich. Shame they were out of rolls and did not mention it. The ribeye had no flavor either, was rubbery, and semi-cold. The person who ordered that could not finish it as it was just not enjoyable. The shrimp that came with the ribeye were cold even though they were supposed to be sautéed fresh off the grill. The Mac n Cheese Burger that my son had was pretty large and might have been the only thing made decently. The waitress only came back once while we were eating to ask us if we wanted a refill on our drinks, did not inquire about our meal, or anything else. Usually they come back to ask how the food is, and if we are enjoying it. She seemed to be pre-occupied, talking to other staff or sitting at a table with another diner. Overall, the experience was disappointing, and not like the Goodsons we have known for many many years. We paid $70 after tip, and it was definitely not a $70 experience.

Just discovered this place a couple months ago. We weren t disappointed. We had had the roast, chicken fried steak and tender pork chops. I have to say the roast was the best of the three. My son said his pork chop was just a tad on the drier side and while the meatloaf was good no one care for the sauce served on top. The bread pudding was delicious and would def get that again. We will definitely be stopping again to try their other dishes. Decently priced and good food. Definitely worth stopping and trying an entree or two.

Would give this restaurant a zero if I could. The first time I went food was okay. Second time was terrible and I personally will never be returning. The host was extremely rude and had a terrible tone when responding to reasonable questions that we had as we had been waiting for almost an hour and almost every single party that came in after us had been seated before us. Weve been going here for years but have been absent for several years. I was shocked when our grandkids suggested it for our family dinner. It was great to get back to the home cooking. The Moms Meatloaf hasnt changed in 20 years. With a side of mashed potatoes and corn . And dont forget the peach cobbler for dessert. I was so full I had to get the cobbler to go and what a great TV snack that night. My wife always gets the chicken fried steak. As usual it was the size of a dinner plate and covered in gravy. Ive been here twice. 12 years apart, and both times, the service is 100%! The first time 1992, I asked if they could make me country fried bacon (bacon battered and deep fried). Chef did it. It wasnt until I left the restaurant that I realized I went to the wrong one.. No wonder they didnt have the deep fried bacon. But my server asked the kitchen, who happily obliged. I came in today, and Ms. Anika at the bar was my waitress. Superb as I asked for a cup of brown gravy on the side and if my meatloaf could drown in brown gravy. She understood the assignment! I lived that there was not a hint of tomato sauce on my meatloaf. Brought my back and bowl of it, boy, was I the happiest diner ever! Seriously go git u some! The breaded steak was crunchy and the steak was moist, the Mac and cheese was cheesy and flavorful, the okra had the appropriate crunch but not overcooked on the inside. We decided to eat the sweet potatoes as a dessert. They were not overly sweet but Perfect after the meal. We were not in love with the rolls, but that s ok because we didn t come for those anyway. We went here for mothers Day and when I tell you the entrees that we all got were so bland litterly nothing had any flavor . The chicken fried steak the fried pork chops. Etc. everything else tasted like it was water boiled and dipped in plain flour and fried. It had a very funky taste to it as well . We had to have them take everything back. And got something else . For 10 minutes, I stood there, and not once did the host or hostess acknowledge that I was there, even though they both looked right at me multiple times. I finally stepped out from behind the small group of 6... only after 3 other groups walked in and were immediately seated. The host finally said something to me. I asked him why it took so long, and his only nonchalant response was, I thought you were part of the group ahead of you, my bad. Now keep in mind Im wearing a blue shirt with bright yellow sleeves...so its not hard to miss that. The food was decent. I ordered the shrimp Alfredo and asked about why it didnt come with garlic bread. The waitress told me that I really didnt want the bread and that it wasnt very good. So I got a regular dinner roll instead.

I had the fried catfish, squash, salad, and a roll. It was all delicious. The service was fantastic (Allie). Generous servings, fresh ranch dressing, homemade rolls. I highly recommend.

The food was terrible, couldn t eat it, was money wasted, ordered the small chicken fried steak, where was the beef , only thin slice of something covered with batter and fried, cut into it, the batter fell off, leaving a strip of uneatable something, tasted like bad bologna. This is the menu item this Resturant market is the best in Texas, diffidently false. The side orders were cold and old, couldn t eat, the only decent to eat was the roll. Don t recommend, a waste of money and time.

While the welcome was great, the atmosphere was okay and our server seemed like she didnt want to be there. Or that she didnt want to serve us. She was moving so fast and barely acknowledging us when she came. When she bought the check, she mumbled something as she set it down while looking away from our table. Now to the food. The appetizer was overly breaded with no flavor. The first one. Side note, they dont have cheese curds. They serve mozzarella sticks instead. The Chicken fried chicken was decent. The gravy added a little more flavor but I needed salt and pepper. The mashed potatoes were mixed with just water I guess as they were tough/ super dry and flavorless. Adding gravy, salt, and pepper did not save them. My husband didnt even care for them and hes way more forgiving than I am flavor-wise. The baked squash was more like unseasoned, boiled squash. Meatloaf was covered in marinara and okay. Mac-n-cheese and green beans were good. All-in-all, its a hard no for me. There is a target audience and my husband and I were not it.

I dont know who my waiter was, but he was attentive and helpful. Im too cheap to purchase bifocal glasses and was having trouble reading the menu. He noticed and offered to help me with that. The steak was good. It and the potato were a tad cool when I got around to eating them, but they got to the table fairly quickly and I was flapping my jaws for a while so that was probably my fault.
