Food was good but peppercorn was something to get use to, every dish had heavy flavor peppercorn so you mouth was numb majority of the time and couldn t really enjoy the taste. I would have given 4 stars but I took a star for the unpleasant demeanor after we finalized the payment and put our tip amount. I find it uncomfortable that people are treated away based off the amount of tip the restaurant wants you to leave vs what we want to leave based off factors from our experience overall. This is one problem I have would majority of these kinds of cuisines but place was beautiful and I would go back to order just will pick dishes with and without peppercorn to balance out the experience.

The Sugar Land location for the iconic Houston Szechuan staple is every bit as excellent as the OG in Chinatown, with one big difference: they serve halal meat on Sundays! A can t-miss spot for the best Szechuan food in the city (and possibly the country). We had the spicy crispy chicken, Mongolian beef, crispy mala beef, sweet and sour eggplant, and the classic water boiled fish.

cute cozy restaurant that serves halal on Sundays. I m so thankful for the owner for providing a halal day for the Muslims and really hope that my Muslim community gives back by being kind and generous to the workers and the owner. Our waitress were so kind and helpful :) Dietary restrictions: They re provide a halal menu on Sunday and make sure that there s no cross contamination:) Parking: right next to a grocery store so there s tons of parking

I was quite happy when I learnt they had started serving halal dishes on Sundays, so I ordered crispy mala beef and some chicken dish. The food was absolutely tasteless. There was so much red chilly, we could not taste any thing else. There was no complex flavor profile, just completely numbing spice. It s okay to be authentic, but this was just outright disappointing. You can see the amount of chillies in just 1 dish. We had to leave it because it was just inedible. But the whole point was when I told the owner about it. They were extremely offhand-ish, anxious absolutely reduced to accept their mistake. Instead they kept insinuating I was lying, saying my claims were exaggerated. A simple I m sorry you didn t enjoy the taste could ve gone a long way, but they have 0 customer service. An absolute disappointment, waste of time and money.

Mala Sichuan in Sugar Land, TX, has been one of our go-to restaurants for a couple of years. We love the consistency in the flavor; the dishes are always bursting with authentic and vibrant Sichuan spices. However, weve noticed that the portion sizes seem to be getting smaller. It could be a figment of my imagination, but its something that Ive noticed. Nevertheless, we still come here a couple of times a month for to-go orders or to dine in. The service is quick and friendly, and the ambiance is cozy and welcoming. Despite the portion size concern, Mala Sichuan remains a favorite for its exceptional food quality and delicious offerings. Highly recommended for Sichuan cuisine lovers!

This place is absolutely PHENOMENAL!! We were here on a Saturday night, and I noticed 1 waiter handle 4 tables like a champ and never let her foot off the gas. Waitress was attentive, courteous, made recommendations, and thanked us for coming. Im not sure if she was the only help for the night bit. Food came out fast, tasted unbelievably authentic, and extremely palatable and a memorable night. Take this from someone who RARELY eats fish, but when I saw the picture online , I knew this place was going to absolutely kill it. My foodie intuition kicked in and told me you could not pass it up, and boy, was I right on the money. The fish was not only flaky, no smell, and super juicy, spicy, and seasoned wonderfully and just a marvel to stare at. It had so many layers of texture, and it all came together well. The chow mein has definitely hand pulled and made that day of, and I can tell the chef put his heart on these dishes because they were a total knockout. P.S. The decor in this place is VERY inviting and worth taking pictures!!

This is probably my favorite Mala Sichuan store. There are so many dishes that are good here. 1. The fragrant pork ribs are really fragrant. I would order these again. 2. The basil crispy chicken is bland. Not enough basil to call this a basil chicken. I would skip this next time. 3. The Sauerkraut Fish and Lamb is my favorite dish here. I get this every time. The soup delicious sour flavors are spot on. The lamb is silky and the fish is clean tasting. There s also bean thread noodles in here. And it s large enough to feed 8-10 people. 4. Spicy crispy chicken is always a must. 5. Sizzling rice cracker pork goes well with the sauce they serve. 6. Green jewels pork is delicious and I enjoy that green vegetable even though I don t know what it s called. 7. Aromatic spicy lamb ribs is really good. I would order every time if it had more meat. 8. Sauerkraut one peppercorn fish fillet is a lip numbing sour soup that is delicious. Beware the Szechuan peppers. 9. Water Boiled fish filet is good. 10. Eggplants in spicy garlic sauce. The sauce is what makes this good. 11. Eggplant and string beans are fragrant. 12. Fragrant wings are chopped in half and deep fried. I m not sure why they did that as I prefer it whole. Not as good as the fragrant pork ribs. I did try the crepes and I didn t like them. I ve had Mille crepes before and I think the filling between each crepe needs stronger flavors.

Updates July 2023 Terrible food. Extremely salty and oily. This was not the first time it has happened multiple times before. Feel like either the chef or the waiter does not care. 2021 - Early 2023 This is our frequent dinner place, always a pleasant visit for as long as I remember it The waiters are generally friendly and helpful. This is especially true for Justin who would tell us the expectation of the dishes on the day and also help to remind the chef for dishes to be less oily for us. Chicken Cordyceps Soup 5/5 This is only available in this restaurant, our all time favorite!! Garlic Fried Vege 5/5 I love it when they make is ultra-less oily for us Spicy Prawn 5/5 love the dish especially they come with all types of other vegetables, wish it could be less oily though Spicy Chicken Cube 4/5 Not bad but the chicken fillings could be more (the one in Chinatown has larger cubes ) Spicy Wanton 3/5 Too oily not so much my dish Kung Poh Chicken 5/5 New favorite, very addictive

My favorite Sichuan Chinese restaurant chain in all of Houston. You cant get better authentic recipes that feel like good home cooking. Be aware, you should have some spice tolerance for most dishes. But it is SOOOO worth it. Definitely try the in-house Plum Juice to cool down. It blends so well with the flavor profile of most dishes served there. I highly recommend trying the Crispy Basil Chicken, Black Pepper Beef, Red Oil Dumplings, and my absolute favorite: Water Boiled Fish Fillet. Strange name, I know, but it is absolutely divine

So we came by here after having had a great meal at another one of their locations in Montrose. It was absolutely amazing. The dishes are authentic, the flavor is amazing. If you have never had true Sichuan food with actual Sichuan peppercorns, its an amazing experience. The food this time around was not as spicy as it was the first time we had it but it was still amazing. I had the Cumin Lamb at the Montrose location, and Dry Pot Beef here. They are so delicious, their chili oil is fantastic. They serve the dishes so they can be shared, they give you as much rice as you need. The aromatics are cooked to perfection, not over cooked, they still had their flavor when they were served. I dont know what else to say but TRY IT! ITS GREAT! I will be heading back here many many times this year. Vegetarian options: My wife is vegetarian and they had absolutely delicious vegetarian dishes that I loved myself too!

Food is simple and Chinese original, not a gourmet restaurant. The place is too informal, almost impersonal and the atmosphere is absent. Just a place where to go to get food. Service very spartan and rough.

The best Szechuan Ive ever had - and I eat a LOT of Chinese food. A friend of mine who was born in that area says Water Boiled Fish was delicious and authentic. And for the love of whatever deity you praise, try the Green Tea Bacon Fried Rice. You will NOT be disappointed if you like fried rice and bacon.

Love this place so much, we went almlst every week to order crispy spicy chicken (extra peppercorn for numbing sensation) + sauerkraut peppercorn fish fillet (not spicy at all, very flavorful).Sucks that it closes on Tuesdays because were craving it right now! Sugar land is much better tasting than the one in bellaire chinatown. Thank you Justin for always providing A+ service every time we come in. Place is bery new and clean.

The food here is phenomenally excellent! Itsa some, no frills restaurant and it was so cols inside, I had to keep my coat on. But, the food was very authentic Sichuan cuisine! Loved the Crispy, Spicy chicken, the Cumin Beef and the succulent appetizer Oil Dumplings.

FANTASTIC FOOD. Some of the best Chinese food Ive eaten - food is served in just a few minutes and the waiters are very nice. Prices average around $15. Would absolutely recommend if you are in the area. Would give 6 stars if possible lol.

We ordered take out and the food was very bland. We ordered fried rice and dumplings and we felt there was no flavor and it was just waste of money. RAKI restaurant or courtyard next door is way better than this one...

Food is definitely good , top notch. Service is decent as well. BUT for everyday family dining out option, it s way too costly with really small serving portions.

I came for my little lunch break today, and this is my first time dining at Mala. The food was amazing. I had a Kungpao Chicken, and I glad that the server told me that they are able to make a non spicy version of that for me. The server has done a good job at explaining details to me. Great service!

Today, my wife bought a portion of stir-fried minced pork with vermicelli. The amount of meat was too little. Why bother if you are Chinese? I hope the boss will rectify the side dishes after reading the message. Its difficult to run a business like this

Food was not fresh also very salty. One of the dish that we ordered double cooked pork .There was a piece of pigs large intestine in the dish.It seems like some leftover food mixed together. Also the leeks in the dish were rusted. So disgusting!!! Very bad quality of food.

The food is pretty good but be aware that the waiters may try to talk you out of your order and steer you towards a dish they had lying around the kitchen that is 75% hot 25% cool.

The food at mala is amazing. We love coming here quite often and love the crispy mala beef and the spicy mala chicken. The service however is mediocre to terrible if you dine in. I ve gone towards the end of the day twice now and both times you are treated poorly if you came 45 minutes before closing. Most restaurants follow a policy that they close the kitchen at a certain time but they know to expect customers to be wrapping up past their closing time. If it pains mala so much, they should just move their closing time up by an hour. The waiters in general lack good service but we got attitude for coming in at 9:15 pm when they close at 10:00 pm. Skip this restaurant if you re gonna dine in.
