This place was really cool. Drove from Dallas and came for the week to enjoy the beach. This happened to be right across the street from the hotel we were staying at. This place did not fail. Once you pay for your ticket you have an option to buy tortoise food and alligator food. Unfortunately when we were there they were not feeding alligators but I paid the $5 to feed the tortoise and it did not disappoint. Probably the highlight of my trip there. Seeing all the different birds migrate to one spot is pretty cool and I saw some pretty cool fish as well. Didnt see any wild alligators but maybe on my next visit. Would recommend to go if youre in South Padre.

Although SPI does not have a board walk along the beach, this nature trail on the Laguna Madre side is as close as it gets. It is an elevated board walk trail above the marshes and water ways. It is very easy to get and the scenery/wildlife beautiful. The two trails are not long, but every set will provide you with wonderful views. I always see different birds, fish. turtles & even alligators. During the hot summer months, visit during the early morning and later evening hours. The other months are best as you can really enjoy being over the water. Parking and entry is free.

Entrance is by the convention center with plenty of parking. At the entrance is a small but nice park and restrooms. The walkways to the bay have informative signage and wide paths with railings. Some sections are covered and have seating for taking a break and watching wildlife. Overall a nice relaxing way to enjoy birds and wildlife of the island bay side.

Nice boardwalk stroll, lots & lots of different species of birds. Loved the little palapa at the end of the boardwalk for some shelter from the sun. Took some good pictures & videos. We missed the Bird & Nature Center by a half hour (they closed at 5pm), but it was nice to catch this little nature trail and still see some cool birds :)

This FREE WALK is immediately north of the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center. In one place, the two trails are five feet from each other. As such, the views are similar, but the birding and nature center is more extensive and includes more natural and man-made basins where many fish species are easily seen. It was very windy during my last visit so I didnt see as many birds or wildlife but it was still a beautiful and enjoyable walk.

Nice boardwalk adjacent to the SPI birding center and its free to visit! Not as good for shorebirds as its neighbor, but better for passerines right around the conference center. Parking at the conference center is plentiful, and the restrooms were very clean. Toilets: Very clean! Well stocked. They have soap and running water.

Very nice short trail that takes you to bird blinds by the bay. This definitely is not a 2hr to half a day walk that the websites tote. At most its a 20 minute walk. However, the view is wonderful, the birds and plants are so neat to see, and theres access to a free public restroom outside of the convention center that is very clean. If you pack a lunch, theres also a really nice gazebo to sit at and enjoy a nice meal outside.
