The food is fresh and delicious. The price is very reasonable. I believe the owners operate it because it is some of the best customer service that Ive experienced. The atmosphere is close knit; about a half-dozen picnic tables. While at my table, I complemented the food to the person who delivered my second order, to go, and he told me that they strive to provide quality food at a reasonable price. He was spot on with my own assessment of the place.

Love these guys with all my heart. Not only do they serve the best Asian comfort food you can get in San Mo, they ve pretty much become a little family to me and my gf. We have a tradition that every time we play D&D with a group of friends, we all go out to Don s afterwards. I always look forward to seeing these guys on the weekends and whenever I get off early from work <3

Was a consistent customer when they had a location in Austin and for their food truck. Was looking forward to eating it again but my salmon was insanely salty, like it had been marinated in soy sauce. The portion was pretty small also. The fries were great like I remembered. I go here religiously because the people at Dons are really friendly and cool and deliver consistently quality food. They are truly one of a kind and one of the best. Vegetarian options: I get the veggie tofu with sautéed veggies added, extra tofu, a couple veggie croquettes and a bunch of their teriyaki sauce. That s been my go to for years and I still crave it every week.

I spent a month in Japan eating authentic Japanese cuisine from all over the country and I can safely say that this restaurant was better or comparable to A LOT of the local food. I prefer the fun curry sauces and flavors the chefs being to the table. I crave the chicken katsu box with an egg and seaweed, and the curry Mayo on the French fries.

With over 500 very positive reviews, I doubt I have much to add. Don Japanese Kitchen is an eclectic, small restaurant that fills quickly. The staff are really friendly, always so nice. Don serves Japanese cuisine offering chicken & seafood dishes, plus sashimi & rice bowls. We ordered Don Chicken, Nan Ban (giant popcorn chicken), N.Y. Strip, and Torch Salmon. All orders were served in a to-go box on a bed of steamed sticky rice with cabbage and pickled ginger. Our party ordered a side of Don Fries, waffle cut fries topped with Don s house-made teriyaki sauce and spicy mayo. The quality is consistently very good and bottled water is free. Highly recommend.

Being local to San Marcos, I am shocked that last night was my first visit. But now I will be visiting often. It was delicious! Crispy chicken, perfect temperature, and the sauce was fabulous. New to Texas; weekend are for exploring different restaurants. Omg this is an amazing find, I chose the Don Chicken which is basically Tonkatsu (panko breaded chicken or pork). The pickled pink ginger tastes amazing. But the sauces on table are everything didn t ask the flavors but this is what it taseted like (chipotle, wasabi, cilantro ranch or mayo style) the chipotle and wasabi are my favorite. My absolute favorite, most beloved place to eat ever!! I ve been going to Don s for about three years now. The guys who work here are so sweet and awesome. We tried this place while visiting our TXST kid. It doesnt look fancy (with just a few picnic tables for casual dining), but dont be fooled. The food was delicious! This place is great always reminds me of my childhood growing up in Hawaii. But this review is for the front desk dude. His memory is impeccable dude have you tried out for the Mensa society? Don has some of the best Japanese rice bowls outside of Japan hands down. I have been a loyal customer since they first opened at the parking lot across from Torchys at UT. They had no lines then, and my curiosity to try this new food truck ignited my love for Don that has persisted for the last 7+ years. The quality is consistent and the portion size enormous. Amazing! Hands down one of the best Japanese spots in all of Texas! I used to go to the don Japanese food truck back when it was located behind the Co-op near UT Austin. The lines would always be 15+ people long. I remember the prices being way lower back then too. Even though a lot has changed between now and then, this place keeps rocking! They have the best combination of flavors ever. I honestly hate that s it s so far away from me now, but to be honest, every time I pass by San Marcos I stop by to grab a bite. They re the best, and their mission to provide delicious and affordable lunch to students is what makes this business a GOAT. Awesome place for Japanese style street food! Portions are huge, prices are low. If youre looking for very traditional Japanese meal, this isnt it - but its still really tasty. They can get carried away with sweet sauces, but you can order the karaage (fried chicken) plain and use the curry sauce on the table for a savory option. The onsen eggs and takoyaki (octopus balls) are definitely worth it. Some dishes come with kombu (seaweed) or bonito (fish), so be sure to mention any allergies. They also offer a huge box of fries for anyone who doesnt enjoy rice. Talk loud when ordering, parking and seating are limited. Its a short walk from campus or the river, and they conveniently pack everything to go.

at around 10pm I pulled up to a little store front, went inside to a super chill Japanese, out on the town, city lights kind of vibe. Lots of decor. For me they had lots of options on the menu and I can wait to go back and try more combinations. First timers, absolutely loved the atmosphere the moment we walked in! The whole environment was decorated in fun anime figures and stickers and unique posters/pictures and other decor. Instead of boring ticket numbers you get a giant sized playing card as your table number which is absolutely awesome! Never seen a restaurant do something so cool. On top of that, the staff was super friendly and energetic! Felt like talking to a friend ordering food. The prices were surprisingly economical! And for the food portions and flavor i was absolutely impressed!!! We got to-go for the dons chicken and kare-age chicken and oh my gosh, was it cooked perfectly and full of flavor!! They had a bunch of diff sauces you could get, and even topped the food with extra sauce upon request. Over all, 10/10! Would recommend!!

Ive gotta give them a 5 star on everything. I started coming while the pandemic was still in full swing and was surprised it wasnt packed to gills even then. Now its got a decent crowd every time and rightfully so. The food is legit, and the value and taste are huge. Its a fun place to hang out in and somehow tucked away in an unexpected spot. It all just works though, the staff is cool, the seating is on point for the spot, the only thing I would change... actually nothing its my fav spot in the city

Moved back recently and was horribly disappointed with all the fried chicken in town till I found this place . The food is amazing, service is unbeatable and the sauces are crazy good! I m taking my formerly vegetarian friend here for her first fried chicken ever, no doubts she ll love it, and all the great veggie items too.

Great food and cool atmosphere. I come here when I want high quality food with healthy options without breaking my budget. The food comes in paper boxes so you can decide to eat in or takeout seamlessly. Plus, its not Styrofoam! But really, the food is on point. You can ask for extra veggies, extra rice, or no rice so it easily fits many dietary restrictions. Dont sleep on the sauces and always get an egg roll. Nice people at the counter. Fast and courteous service. Food absolutely slaps. Their condiments (curry sauce, spicy sauce, and Wasabi sauce) are amazing, too. Also, one of the few places that doesnt deafen you with the music. Now in my top 3 spots in San marcos.

Didn t know I ve been missing Don my life until this evening. Ever work late and get so hungry that you can t decide where to eat? My husband and I found ourselves in this situation and we re glad we gave Don Japanese Kitchen a try. Everything was so delicious and the portions were generous. And the service was fantastic! Seriously the hospitality is top-notch and it reminded me of hometown of Las Vegas. Excellent!!

I don t do reviews very often because my time is valuable. The only time I do reviews is if I am truly impressed or utterly disappointed. I recently moved here from WA. And I am very glad I found this place. It s a nice cozy place with an extremely friendly staff. The food is very good, fresh, and savory. It is also very reasonable in cost. Especially for how much you get. These guys also do a very good job and actually care about their customers. I will definitely be returning often and recommend this place highly. Also, their Brussels sprouted are REALLY good. /edit after a year of regular eating here. 10/5 stars. You don t feel like just a customer but you feel like family. They are constantly adding new things to the menu and it has been 100% very satisfying every time. Really great people and food is amazing. James

First time tonight and honestly everything about it was really good! There was a very small problem with the Mac and chz bites but the guy that was handing out the food was very nice and fixed it. Also the cashier at the register was really nice! Got the terriayki chicken and the don fried chicken. The food & Customer service 11/10. Atmosphere was also nice. Will be back for sure :)

I thought Id never get done again after they closed in Austin. But to my surprise the same don moves to San mo. Food and staff was excellent! I got the fish don and have to give it a 9 out of 10. It was right under $10 and the quantity is enough for two people. Three whole panko breaded fish fillets, a bunch of rice and some ginger and cabbage on the side. I also got the onion rings but I would give them a 5 out of 10. I love onion rings but the teriyaki sauce and other sauce on it just made them too rich and salty for me. Regardless they are very crispy. Overall definitely a 8/10 I would definitely come again and bring some friends!
