Best ramen Ive had in San Antonio. Really packed place but its worth it. Not so great for groups over 4 people, in my opinion. The broth for their ramen is really hearty. Id love to come back here. 2024 update: This was my first time eating here since they relocated and its not the same ramen. Its still good, but not great I think theres 1 better place in SA to get ramen. Kimuras ramen Tonkatsu broth was way too salty and had no creamy flavor, and just way too salty I couldnt finish it. Glad I tried it, it was good but probably will go to my main preference for ramen.

The food was a great surprise to me since the restaurant is in a lesser traveled area near downtown and small. Parking is very limited but once inside the service was very welcoming and helpful. You order at the counter, take a number and our food arrived promptly and was very enticingly plated. We ordered gyoza and it was a tasty start. Then came fried chicken balls with three types of dipping sauces which was almost melt-in-your mouth tender. Our second entree was pork shoulder prepared in a barbecue glaze on a bed of rice, also very tasty and tender. Our only criticism was the fairly loud grunge music in the main dining area. We would recommend something a little more conducive to a quiet evening dinner together, like instrumental, instead of Nirvana but maybe that just shows our age. Nevertheless I look forward to returning again and enjoying the food.

I dont get the hype. BUT....everyone has different standards and prefrences!! The alcoholic beverages were but the Gyoza was upside down and poor presentation overall. My biggest regret is not taking a pic of the dishes/silverware which is self-serve as it had soy sauce all over it. The shrimp tempura was over breaded IMO and the ramen was decent, it came with pork belly but I added pork shoulder, the shoulder had a brisket taste which for ramen kind of threw the authenticity of the meal off to me.

Looked forward to ramen and my daughter very very plain order of rice and shrimp literally imposible to mess up well let me tell you when the impossible is in fact possible. Ramen was disgusting had a taste of beef water 0-10 and a gross after taste like a rusted stainless steal cup/ pan. My daughter s white rice was the only good thing out of all our food. She had a side of plain Shrimp and it tasted like hippie. Yess you read that right hippie. I tried it after my mom told me it was awful and I said it taste like hippie and she said the same thing. ( you have to try it to believe me) and last but not least our server we ordered shrimp tempura and the sauce it comes with it comes with a side of radish and before I could even say anything the server is mixing it in to the sauce without even asking.. anyways 10/10 don t recommend this place the price we paid for 2 bites of food.

The ambience of the restaurant was cool. Was not at all impressed with the food considering the ratings. The plates were kinda dirty and so was the counter top. The spicy edamame was sweet. The ramen broth was very average. Broth was lukewarm and salty and the toppings were sweet and odd. The spicy sauce on the side was weird tasting as well. We barely had the food. Everything looked very appetizing though. Did not enjoy our experience.

Very nice place but extremely limited parking options and lots of No Parking surrounding. The atmosphere changes when you step inside. The menus and ordering is done upon walk-in. The menu seems a bit overwhelming to view but staff is friendly and answers all questions with recommendations. There is seating in the back, outside & upstairs. There are stations around the place for water/tea refills and table set needs which you get yourself. The food is brought to the table via numbered table flag. Thats when the flavored party begins! Our group of 4 enjoyed Onigiri, Grilled Bob Choy, Yakitori, chilled house made Sake, and Butterfly Bramble off the happy hour (4-7) menu. Then came the Ramen. I recommend their signature Tantanmen (with add ons of your choice). Its just the right amount of spice and flavor.

Really like this place, good mix of traditional food and trendy. Everything was well done. My son and I had a great time and highly recommend to anyone looking for a great spot. Service was super nice and attentive. Pricing was quite reasonable, although Im not a huge fan of paying for condiments after you have paid and brlefire you realize the food needed it?? I would rather the pricing just be a bit higher so you dont feel the need for that kind of thing. I understand it should not be free. Just build it into the pricing. Overall, its a super good spot. Me and my wife went there a few days ago and it was a fun experience the place is very homey definitely somewhere to go and work on a project or idk bring a laptop and game. Its really cool and unique, the food is very fulfilling only reason it didnt get 5 stars is that the broth looked and tasted like it had been split with water and it was way to salty with bubbles and pools of oil surfacing the top of the broth. The noodles were not cooked thoroughly and they stuck together in one big clunk. Very tasty food but still doesnt beat the cherrity bar, that place has the best ramen by far.

The food was good, what I didn t like is that you have to order and pay first at the entrance. If you want something extra you have to stop eating and go to order it. It was our first time there, we went because I wanted to try a new ramen place. We ordered the grilled bok choy, the gyozas and the tonkatsu ramen. The food was really good and flavorful. We also ordered the crafted sodas and they cost 6 Dlls and they served it in a mini glass. We didn t like that at all. I forgot to take pictures of them. They charge you extra if you want chili paste. In most places they put it for free in the table.

Reason for my refund was because my order was made wrong took up to the cashier only to be told I was wrong and thats what I ordered I went back to my table got my receipt took it to the front only to have some ghetto attitude girl snatch the receipt from my hand, looks at it and smacks her lips and tells me what do I want to do. Thats why I got my refund and she threw my original receipt away.

The only reason I rated this 3 stars is because I want you to see it. Some people skip the 1 star but that is what I want to give it. Issues with time, sanitation, and execution. We are tourist and ordered from here b/c it was close. They said 20-25 minutes. Upon arrival they had not started our food at all and had to wait another 20 min! There was no wearing of gloves at anytime and we saw cooks using their hands to season things. While waiting for the second time, 2 tables sent their food back. We should have realized something was off. When we finally got home with our food, the portion size was laughable for the price. The food was terrible. It tasted like the noodles were pulled from the fridge and heated up. The only thing good was the kabob, though it was a small portion for 9bucks. I am still starving and have to find another place to eat. Do not eat hear, no parking and no real reason to waste your time and money.

My husband and I are not from the area but always make it a point to stop at Kimura when we re in SA and have done so for years, even before it was at its current location. Our streak will likely come to an end, however. Our go-to is the shoyu with spice, and since inflation is affecting everyone I won t complain about paying $7 for 4 gyoza. The noodles are always amazing, but the lack of consistency in taste is wild. It seems like every time we come they decide to change the taste of something; this time everything was just so SWEET. The mushrooms (usually delicious) were ridiculously sweet and also tasted like they d been soaked in tap water, which sucked since I always order extra mushrooms. The house spice tasted like a spicy, much sweeter version of chamoy and completely ruined the broth. The self-serve concept is fine but I ve noticed a definite decline in general friendliness when we do have to interact with staff. All in all the decline in customer service (even with a self-serve concept) and inconsistency will have me saying goodbye to what used to be my favorite ramen spot.

A ramen so satisfying, it is worthy to be on the competition floor of shokugeki no Soma. All of the different components worked so well together to create a harmony of flavors in this delicate bowl of happiness. From the umami waves of the broth, to the sweetness of the shitake, and complimented by the smokiness of the melt-in-your-mouth pork belly, I wish a lot more ramen places would take note of this masterful bowl of ramen. The charred and spicy edamame was so good and so HOT. I had to stop halfway because my mouth was on fire. If youre a ramen lover, you would not regret this tonkotsu ramen. Weight watchers be damned, this is worth all the points for the day. . Parking: Very limited number of parking spot on the lot (5 I believe?)

It was packed on a Tuesday at 9 so I take that as a good sign. We went again for lunch (were staying right by it and havent gone grocery shopping yet) and same wonderful service and delicious food. Definitely cheaper for lunch with $10 deals. Vegetarian options: They have a few veggie options with typical soup & edamame. They also have a miso ramen that can be vegan and you can add tofu to it.

Food was good. I really enjoyed the sweet iced tea. Atmosphere was really nice. Vegetarian options: Vegan options shown on the menu Parking: Parking lot was very small. We were able to find parking around the street corner luckily Kid-friendliness: I wouldnt recommend kid friendly in evening, its mostly a bar restaurant vibe. But probably great for kids during lunch

Me and the boyfriends first time here, the food was decent enough. They could have turned the heat up inside, we were both freezing and trying to stay warm while eating. On the way home, I got extremely sick and almost shat all over the car and was nauseous. The only thing I ate was the ramen from this place. We tried a second time because we were just desperate for food. The temperature outside was 20° and inside was not much warmer. I get that its an older building and this is Texas so Yall arent used to the cold as much but I dont think its a good look when all of your customers have to stay bundled up inside of your restaurant. Bring in some space heaters or something for your paying patrons. The green tea didnt even stay warm so that was kinda useless on keeping us warm. We waited long enough that my boyfriend was debating on just refunding the money and we leave. Which we should have probably done because when the food came out it was cold. Like it had been sitting there and forgotten. Not a good look when your customers are coming here and paying for a hot meal. Not to mention we both ended up with indigestion after we left. Unfortunately we tried a second time and were still disappointed. Definitely wont be returning or recommending

I had been wanting to eat here for a while and finally went. The food was tasty! I asked for my order to be spicy and it most certainly was! I like the fact that the chef is right there cooking ur food. It wasnt too crowded when I went but I know it stays busy. The parking was difficult, which can be a turn-off but its still worth the visit. I had a lunch special chicken & rice. Im going back for a pho/ramen meal.

Id probably recommend it but it is pretty different to other ramen shops, which may not be for everyone. I would say its worth trying once and deciding for yourself. Wheelchair accessibility: Accessible but theres only one handicap spot in the parking lot.

A casual dinner of ramen for two Japanese-Americans resulted in a number of misses. -ordering at the counter became tedious and unnecessarily long as we watched soon-to-be diners ordering food but taste-testing a selection of wines or sakes before finally making selections. -onscreen gratuities begin at 20%! 20% of tax-included total! And we carried the water carafe, glasses and beer to the table ourselves. As first time diners, we learned the utensils were also self-serve. -the ramen was delivered by a manager (is he serving tables for the tips?) -the ramen must have cooled before table delivery because it should have been hot. It was not. -while the spicy ground pork in Tantanramen was quite tasty, the noodles were clumping together. Not very Japanese. -the shoyuramen failed to satisfy the palate. We think it was the shoyu being low quality. And mushrooms should be added last or late into the ramen, not cooked in. -was white pepper available? -too many ramen shops to try before returning here. I still want to know why the gratuity starts at 20% for delivery of food to table is by a manager. Parking: Five legit spaces but when an oversized SUV parks perpendicularly, exiting became challenging.

Update update: Came in with some friends and had a pleasant experience. Sake and food were delicious, food came out in a timely fashion, and atmosphere was good. It seems they have figured out their process. Update: this place really needs better management. Tried ordering on a Monday, their phone and online ordering wasnt working. Figured wed come in since its close. Sign on the door said online order would resume 2 hours ago, then waited 15 minutes for someone at the counter and nobody even looked us in the eyes. People in front of us had been waiting longer. Original review: Online ordering said they were closed despite being open. Phone system was down. I have ordered from them a few times and each time has been an increasingly difficult or negative experience.

AMAZING! From the customer service to the food, I have never had a bad experience here. We were greeted by Samantha and she had the best energy even after dealing with a very rude and unpleasant customer. It was evident he just wanted to take his frustration out on her and not genuinely seek a resolution with a pickup order on a very busy Saturday night at the best ramen spot in San Antonio. She handled herself in a professional manner in a tense situation and I was impressed with her. She even suggested a really great plum wine that I ll be ordering from now on for future visits. Keep up the good work! Can t wait for my next Kimura fix. :) PS- the house spice is a MUST add-on!

People would step away from kitchen to do other things and would not wash hands upon returning. At one point, a random person not wearing uniform (presumably owner) stepped into kitchen to help, cool! But at least wash your hands before! Questionable cleanliness forsure!

Im visiting from Austin and was starving after the drive. We have a million ramen shops in Austin but very few places serve katsudon, so I thought Id give this place a shot. The atmosphere is very charming. I took a walk around after I ordered my food to really take in the space. I started with the grilled bok choy which was charred nicely and still had a nice crunch. The katsudon came out steaming hot with a huge portion of rice. Everything was seasoned nicely; no need to add salt or soy sauce. My only complaint is the cutlet seemed a bit too thin. The parking lot is tiny and was a nightmare to leave; not really the businesss fault, but its something to be aware of if youre coming during busy hours.

Wow, drove all the way over there from across town to get ramen when your hours said that youre open just to find out that youre closed for a private event. Unprofessional unprofessional unprofessional. You dont close your restaurant when youre supposed to be open just because someone wants to be in your restaurant. I can guarantee I will not be back and Im not going to waste my time knowing that you might not actually be open when youre supposed to be open. An advise anyone who read this to do the same, go to a restaurant that actually values you instead of some private rich event.

Service was really good I just didnt get the normal greeting they always do in Japanese, It seemed like some sort of disturbance must have happened outside that drew their attention which I understand. The atmosphere is good and very clean and nice. I came at late ish lunch so it was pretty empty. I do miss the old location though because it was small and cozy and really made you feel like you were in a little ramen shop in Japan or something close to but now it feels more like a large nice ish ramen place which isnt terrible by any stretch. Overall I highly recommend Kimura, you wont find better ramen anywhere else in town or state most likely.

Just a disappointing experience from when I walked in. There was no clear direction of where to go and I tried to ask the cashier and just kind of floundered for a moment. Then went to my table but wasn t told to come back up to order. It was just confusing and some signs or having an engaging welcome vs everyone shouting hello or whatever they were saying would be really helpful and less confusing. I came for happy hour and the drinks were a little over priced for a happy hour but the plum blossom was pretty good in taste. The onigiri fell apart as soon as I picked it up and the rice was very stale. The grilled bok choy was good and worth mentioning but very small portion on a large plate made it less exciting. Not sure if I ll give this place another try but thought it was worth the review and hopefully offer some constructive criticism.

After waiting in line to order a drink for my wife, I was informed that I was being cut off. Maybe they saw my face in line too many times as I had been ordering food and drinks for both myself and my company. This is a completely self service, stand in line and get prompted for a tip, every time you need anything place. No one could tell me why I seemed inebriated or how many drinks I had had. (Hint: two drinks over the course of at least two hours with appetizers, food and self served waters). Asked to speak with a manager. Was presented with Gabby who informed me that she could refuse service to anyone for any reason. How sweet. I like that idea, however, I didnt get the reception I was hoping for, or any reason. What I did get was an Im the boss of something attitude, and some TABC rules. We have all worked in food service before we had marketable skills, we understand TABC rules. What customers also understand are petty attitudes and poor customer relations. The man behind me was also put off by the situation and offered to buy the drink. Thank you, sir, but we will be leaving now. Funny thing, this same establishment has a bar upstairs where you can drink heavily if thats your thing. If we wanted to get drunk we would have gone up there. I guess downstairs is subject to the whim of whoever is standing at the counter during your current trip to the register. Wait in line to roll the dice. The wife and I have been here a few times before with the same food and drink pattern and have never had a problem. We were starting to like the place. The cook staff are awesome and the food is good (from our experiences). Unfortunately, we will be finding another place to Invest our money for date night.

Okay lets start from the beginning, Me and My husband are huge ramen/Sushi lovers. We saw this place and saw the ratings and I, who looks at reviews and photos. yes, it matters. We arrived and parking was very small and a struggle, but workable? We saw their product truck? Now you would think they are to be stored properly in an insulated truck that way they arent exposed to certain temperatures, but it was a normal truck and they had many products on the bed that I cant say exactly what BUT what was concerning to us is eggs. Who knows what else couldve been exposed on that truck or how long theyve been on the road. Service: They all greeted sweetly and we loved the inside but the girl taking our order was very low and I felt bad I had to make her repeat herself a few times, once we got the order in we were handed but never were told if we were to be seated or seat ourselves. We had to ask. Keep in mind we werent given utensils. Waiting about 15-20mins until we got our food, we still had no utensils nor told that we get it ourselves, which we wouldnt have minded. We just werent told anything. Again I had to ask. They brought it to us. So its very unclear what you have to do for yourself if you have to, again we wouldnt mind. We werent checked on, dont know if they just dont or what. Okay now the food: Presentation was there! It made it look good! We ordered Onigiri, Oyako Don (rice bowl), TanTanMen (Ramen). The Onigiri was a 5/10 only because it wasnt full, more rice than the filling. My husband did find a huge bone in it and that was a turn off. He thought it was salty due to the season they put on top but I loved it. The TanTanMen was a 4/10 the broth was a bit greasy, the meat was superrr salty I couldnt eat it and I love salty things. The veggies in it were HUGE and the mushrooms tasted very old, burnt, and salty. The noodles were the only thing good overall. Rice bowl-rice was soggy, egg had to much salt and too much scallops. Chicken was good but over all, over seasoned/ was too salty. With all being said, we didnt finish our food and left hungry :(( Were no food critic but we love food! I hope this place improves or takes in the criticism Thank you :)
